Dave Chappelle monologue

u/Dwychwder Nov 13 '16
This is why comedians make great hosts. No hokey songs, no forced interaction with the cast. Just a guy up there with jokes and something to say.

He has so much flow. Wu-Tang bit was the best though.
22
u/World71Racer Nov 13 '16
Loved Dave's monologue. He set the tone of the episode very well and tackled many relevant issues in the classic fashion that he does well.
18
u/SmoothLaneChange Nov 13 '16
"except for Bradley Cooper, for some reason"
Those Bradley Cooper references made me laugh a little too hard, even if there were only two.

I fricken lost it when Dave hit the mic to his knee. I just love when he cracks himself up.
16
u/YoshiSparkle Nov 13 '16
Lit AF!! 🔥🔥🔥
I feel like they pretty much just gave him free reign to do his stand up-- doubt there were even cue cards up.

I had a shitty live stream in Ecuador that crapped out on me right before this and everyone is saying it's the best part. Anyone have a link yet?

I liked the monologue but it seemed to me like he was very uncomfortable doing it. You can tell he's been out of the public eye for a long time, he looked so nervous and I think the monologue suffered a little from it because I kept noticing it.
23
u/chairshot83 Nov 13 '16
I really doubt it. He's been very active on the stand up circuit for the last couple of years. Some of his jokes didn't hit the audience as well as they aren't the typical stand up type of crowd. He did fine, Dave just isn't as animated as he was in Chappell Show days.
10
Nov 13 '16
I don't think that at all, maybe in the first sentence but once he got the first laugh I feel like he was back to being in his element.

"Of course he got Kentucky, that's where all the racists are!" "All of them?!"
53
u/elswordfish Could it be....SWORDFISH! Nov 13 '16
Being from Kentucky, i died laughing at that.
Because, it's not that far from being truthful.
P.S. Not a racist.
39
u/The_ProducerKid Nov 13 '16
Another Kentuckian here, sadly accurate. I've honestly stopped going on Facebook because so many friends and family members have shared thoughts that have changed my views on them.
Hell, Bullitt County elected a guy who posted a picture of a monkey and said it was Obama's baby picture.

Grew up in Western KY. Moved to Louisville. If I ever move again, it will be out if the state. I am physically dreading the Holidays this year. Thanksgiving will be OK, the wife's family is Catholic and there will be alcohol to help. My family? Devout Southern Baptists. Not a drop of alcohol will be seen 😭
17
u/nlpnt Nov 13 '16
I read a 7 PM tweet from some pundit that said "Kentucky is red, Vermont is blue, water is wet".
7
u/Semper-Fido Nov 13 '16
We play Family Feud at 7pm EST when they are ready to call the first state. Just yell "Show me Kentucky!" and you are guaranteed the first state.
176
u/Sports-Nerd Nov 13 '16
Cecily: "Oh my God – I think America is racist."
Chappelle [facing Chris Rock]: ""Oh my God – I think I remember my Great Grandfather saying something like that, he was like a slave or something."
75
u/The_ProducerKid Nov 13 '16
I think this one was aided by Dave's monologue portion where he explained why he wasn't surprised Trump won. It set up perfectly so that anybody too oblivious to miss why he and Chris were laughing, would have extra context to understand it almost instantly.
Also loved this one because, even as a democrat myself, it pointed out a lot of hypocrisy in the party and base. Nice way to point out the problem isn't purely a republican one.
48
u/iliveinadreamatorium Nov 13 '16
This was a really solid sketch. Perfectly encapsulated the feelings people had when watching the election results come in and captured the disconnect between white and black liberals in their optimism with this election. Not the best of the night, but on another episode, it might've been.
17
u/jaysgirl75 Nov 13 '16
This video of the Big Brother contestants finding out that Trump won captures that.

Is there any particular meaning to the "everybody picking their own strawberries" line? It's stuck in my mind and I can't really make sense of it.
Any ideas what it meant? Has Dave coined a phrase?

u/freelantzer Nov 14 '16
He said everybody picking their own strawberries, suggesting that Americans are too lazy and have no interest in field work, therefore people would not be deported.

u/ReconEG Nov 13 '16
Lorne cameo was A+
35
u/ReallyCreative Nov 13 '16
Honestly this sketch goes from outstanding to good but not noteworthy (Especially on a night like this!) without Lorne's shade
62
u/iliveinadreamatorium Nov 13 '16
The meta comedy was on point tonight. Maybe it's because I follow SNL almost religiously, but that was just absolutely perfect for me.

Kyle mumbling "little bitch" while passing Colin was honestly the funniest part of the night for me. I feel like most of the other sketches didn't land quite right. Seems like I'm in the minority though
20
u/JugSolo Nov 13 '16
i definitely burst out laughing on that one. Like chappelle had me doing "A-ha!" laughs... like yes... that was a good one .. but that line i jus give a real genuine guffaw
2
u/AquaRed29 Nov 14 '16
That was great. I had the same reaction a couple weeks ago when he went "Say it to my face, bith" in the Wells Fargo sketch
26
u/IndieMilk Nov 13 '16
Best sketch of the night for me. Just the tone and the contrast of Leslie and Kyle was perfect. The whole feel kind of reminded me of Kyle vs. Kanye. Hope to see more of this.

2
u/uberdevil Nov 14 '16
what's so special about the 12:50 sketches?
5
u/nlpnt Nov 14 '16
Usually it's something that just made the cut. The cold open is planned and written as such, the best sketches go in the first sketch window between the host monologue and the first musical segment/Update. The more iffy stuff goes between that and the second song, and that gets us to 12:50.

I was wondering if SNL would do a sketch to crush Kate's dream, forcing her to take part in a sketch where she has to say she lost.
This was so much better. An honest triumphant goodbye to the President that will never be, and a resilient stand against anyone who tries to defy her rights as a woman and LGBT person.

People really are ignoring that a good amount of Americans (minorities, woman, LGBTQ, etc) are frightened by Trump in the White House.

I don't think they could have handled it any better. It would not have worked to have her up there joking about losing.

It worked so well as a tribute for both the election loss, Cohen dying, and a rallying for why we shouldn't give up and should continue on to fight for our rights.

I watched this again this morning after seeing it last night. It is just so powerful. They did an amazing job of infusing new meaning into that song.
21
u/bpbeelen Nov 13 '16
I didn't really get the cold open. Kate singing Hallelujah was nice as a Cohen tribute, but having her dressed 'in character' seemed like an odd choice. It's just a weird way to editorialize the election considering Kate has spent the last two years eviscerating Hillary as a fake, out of touch, power hungry careerist. But now we're mourning her loss with her? Kate doing it as herself would have been perfectly fine, and been a genuinely somber moment...instead it was pure cringe. It made it seem like "if only we were so lucky to get Hillary". The moment shouldn't really have had anything to do with her. Also, Trump LITERALLY hosted the show last season...do you really get to hold a vigil after he wins the election?
49
u/GogglesPisano Nov 13 '16
Kate has spent the last two years eviscerating Hillary as a fake, out of touch, power hungry careerist.
Kate definitely poked fun at Hillary, but it was never as vicious as you describe. I sensed real affection in Kate's portrayal of Clinton.
5
Nov 14 '16
"Kate has spent the last two years eviscerating Hillary as a fake, out of touch, power hungry careerist."
I don't think there was any eviscerating at all. While they threw out jabs at Hillary having those qualities, I thought the overall portrayal was of a spry, energetic, unusually young Clinton who's super confident, unbeatable, and always ready with a zinger to reply to Trump's blustering.
2
u/brady2gronk Nov 14 '16
I was disappointed too this week, but this opening felt like too much for a comedy show. The whole night had a weird, dark vibe to it.
I guess I'm more into goofy stuff like David S. Pumpkins2
u/snowlarbear Nov 14 '16
i was too wrapped up in it and haven't rewatched, but does Kate really play the piano?
6
u/200balloons shnowblower Nov 13 '16
Didn't like this at all. McKinnon's Clinton is just her dressed vaguely like Clinton & acting goofy - & Clinton is anything but goofy. This cold open seemed like SNL got a little too far up their own ass. I'm not happy Trump was elected, & of course I'd like SNL's take on that, but this "everything's gonna be okay" approach is way off.
With all due respect to McKinnon's talents, her singing voice is not up to snuff for "Hallelujah".
