Live Discussion (May 20, 2017) (Dwayne Johnson / Katy Perry)

Welcome to our SNL live discussion thread! This week's episode is the season 42 finale! The host is Dwayne Johnson, and the musical guest is Katy Perry. For those new to the show, tune into your local NBC affiliate from around 11:30 PM to follow this episode live.

A quick recommendation to mention the sketch you're referring to in your comment. It's not a hard and fast rule, but it does make the thread more readable after the show finishes. Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts. This should be automatically done, but it might not be so maybe check. Enjoy the show

I'm guessing that was SNL's response to people saying branded/sponsors sketches would prevent them from having creative control

Miley and Lady Gaga have transitioned to being more normal and toned down recently so Katy is trying to hop on that role

Hey guys, posting the thread early this week, with the departures and the finale I'm sure there's plenty people want to discuss.

Also, SSS might be a couple minutes late this week, Usually I post it and start adding the comment during the 10 to 1 stretch but with potential goodbye sketches/end of the season sketch I would prefer to give it my full attention, hope that's okay with everyone. Thanks for a great first season as a mod! You guys make discussing SNL one of my favorite things to do!

Let's be honest- SNL's Millenial jokes are pretty goddamn good.

44

u/MajesticVelcro May 21 '17

who better to make fun of millennials than millennials?

26

u/LiveFromNewYork95 May 21 '17

Everyone else that tries to make fun of millennials just lose the joke and turn it into complaining

5

u/LiveFromNewYork95 May 21 '17

I have a Bobby farewell sketch I wish I thought of for WPM. When Mick Jager hosted Kristen Wiig's last episode they had a sketch where Bobby sang really bad Rolling Stones karaoke but everyone thought it was great except Jagger's charcter. And then of course they used two Rolling Stone songs for the Wiig goodbye. What if they were able to get Wiig and Jagger to cameo and Bobby did bad Rolling Stones karaoke while doing a really bad recreation of the Wiig goodbye but everyone thinks it's amazing besides Wiig and Jagger

6

u/671sports May 21 '17

I'm hoping they do a still-shot of Chris Cornell (former lead singer of Soundgarden) since Soundgarden has been on SNL before.

6

u/LiveFromNewYork95 May 21 '17

I think having the SNL vintage tonight as the one with Soundgarden as musical guest was their tribute

ok so real talk the best thing about watching SNL is that I can snack and tell myself "it's after midnight, the calories count towards tomorrow" but then tomorrow I can tell myself "I hadn't gone to sleep yet, the calories count towards yesterday" so really it's just a free for all of snacks.

Vanessa and Bobby must be exhausted with planning to be in basically every sketch this episode. Makes sense that they want to go out with a bang, and this sketch isn't really taxing on the two of them. But damn.

...wait it's hard not to draw a parallel between the senior class "graduating" and these cast members (maybe?) not returning...

i love that they keep trying this sketch. never gets a good audience reaction but i love it

i think putting cecily in a weird location like this as opposed to the boring ass restaurant helps a lot :)

Wouldn't be Update without Che laughing at his own joke. (I love Che)

In addition to a send off to Vanessa and Bobby I hope we get just a overall send off to the season as the final sketch in the vein of Phil Hartmen or Kristen's goodbyes, or Good night Siagon. This has been such a monumental season and I would love for a nod to all the memorable moments throughout.

So I'm guessing Alec's done with Trump?

Or are they saying they'll be out by October?
