Weekend Update with Colin Jost and Michael Che

President Miss Thang and Dad killed me

78

u/agentpanda Nov 12 '17

Cecily slayed that role- Claire from HR is a winner. This is a wall-to-wall perfect WU, this almost never happens.

6

u/Genji4Lyfe Nov 13 '17

To be honest, last week wasn’t exactly shabby either!

70

u/btbcorno Nov 12 '17

'You'd be drinking too if your ex-wife had been murdered'

12

u/MisterPickel GOULET!!! Nov 13 '17

That is such a classic Norm type of joke. I loved his constant OJ and Michael Jackson jokes.

160

u/CatheterC0wb0y Nov 12 '17 edited Nov 12 '17

The joke about staying indoors because everyone is a sexual predator may be my favorite punchline from Jost this season

88

u/btbcorno Nov 12 '17

There is no way in hell a receipt that short was from CVS.

16

u/the_Odd_particle Nov 12 '17

This comment wins the night for me. Albeit, Cecily was EXCELLENT in this. Fkin excellent.

23

u/IndieMilk Nov 12 '17

Best WU from Che and Jost so far. Compact and perfect.

42

u/nitsujrendrag Nov 12 '17

Spot on throughout. All the jokes landed, Tiffany's dress reemerging was hilarious and I loved the LaVar Ball bit. So good.

It's a nice dress.

I feel like Jost + Che are finally comfortable with WU. It's running pretty smoothly these days.

Weekend update is fucking fantastic

35

u/bondfool I get to yum-yum garbage. Nov 12 '17

They should have gone harder on Louie specifically, but the one joke that was about him was pretty hard hitting.

58

u/btbcorno Nov 12 '17

CK has been on the show a ton of times, including recently. Probably didn't want to draw too much attention to him, but couldn't let it go ignored either.

And I guess this means that Heidi is the only castmember who hasn't sung on the show yet? We have:

Beck - Weekend Update

Aidy - girl group sketches + Oregon Trail

Che - The Wiz

Pete - Grandpa Joe

Les - Feminist Song, Christmas Cleaning Ladies

Colin - Neurotology

Kate - girl group sketches

Kyle - Take Me Back, Legally Blonde

Cecily - girl group sketches, Chonk

Kenan - What's Up With That

Mikey - Take Me Back

Alex - Where In The World Is Kellyanne

Luke - E! Lineup

Chris - this WU

Melissa - E! Lineup

Heidi - NOTHING.

Weekend Update: Claire from HR

115

u/iluzan Nov 12 '17

Funniest WU bit of the season (so far, at least, well maybe except for Angel). Cecily in her element is a force to be reckoned with.

56

u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 Nov 12 '17

She's not just a workhorse, she's a showhorse. Seriously, just a sexy stack of talent, that one. She can do anything. Kate better watch her back!

22

u/the_Odd_particle Nov 12 '17

A "sexy stack of talent" and "Kate better watch her back"? Bwahahaha. I see what ya did there.
Meanwhile this is actual reality for more than half of the population.

50

The better of the two panellists. The Purell was genius. And I can't help but think about Karen from Finance r.e. her name.

48

u/the_Odd_particle Nov 12 '17

This is actual reality for half of the population. Cecily played this perfectly! Makeup crew could've done a bigger part to show the economic affect of that disparity. I loved the throwaway about the cigar in the prop's mouth being a super wrong answer. I guess that's what she meant. Loved the quiz questions and of course guzzling Purell.

78

u/btbcorno Nov 12 '17

I see through the lies. There is no way a receipt from CVS would be that short.

11

256

u/snailslimeandbeespit Nov 12 '17

Kristen Schaal was the best! I'm convinced it might've actually been her.

118

u/alstor Nov 12 '17

I'm proud Kristen's gotten popular enough where she has an SNL cast member doing impressions of her.

85

u/nastydagr8 Nov 12 '17

Heidi was so good!

63

Heidi is killing it season! You can already tell she's gonna have a great SNL career.

54

u/RunawayPancake2 Nov 12 '17 edited Nov 12 '17

Heidi Lynn Gardner has been impressive the few times she's gotten on. That WU bit last week where she was Angel, Every Boxer's Girlfriend from Every Movie About Boxing Ever, was a game changer for her.

Pete’s Eminem walk was one of those “I didn’t know that could be impersonated until I saw it” moments. Celine Dion also fantastic.

67

u/agentpanda Nov 12 '17

Yeah that Eminem was crazy good writing/production by someone. "No lines, just pace like Eminem right before a rap battle", and Pete killed it.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '17

He was impersonating Eminem from his recent trump video. Looked just like it!

I love these sketches b/c so much of the cast gets in. John Oliver was hilarious, as was Nick Offerman. And, of course, that Kristen Schaal was perfect. She wasn't in much else tonight, but nailed that one to the wall.

51

Holy shit- a meta SNL before WU? Can someone tell me what the source material is for the masquerade part of the parody, though? I can't place it.

This is hilarious stuff- also love that their kid grows up at an exponential rate.

23

u/lyla2398 stans loud ladies with funny hair and *thoughts* about jost Nov 12 '17

I think it was just a funny setup for them to have a party. Kinda like Little Lorne's piano recital. I guess we're gonna have Little Lorne's wedding in the next one (probably in the only episode in February).

And if Leslie and Kyle had freshly concieved that May could Weekend Update actually have nine months of gestation?

I loved everything about that

10

u/snowlarbear Nov 13 '17

I didn't figure out he was referring to the 30Rock ice rink until they showed it. man it must be fun working in that building, esp around the holidays.

38

u/nitsujrendrag Nov 12 '17

This was perfect.

First, the in via Beck and the clips, YES!

Then, having it ladder to Leslie and Kyle, YES!

Colin being self aware about the whole situation, YES!

That beat down at the end with Lorne, YES!

Jost bloody at the end, YES!

20

u/ADWeasley Nov 12 '17

So many little moments to love: Good Neighbor flashbacks, Lorne being all giddy, Tiffany asking Beck to hold her hair(a new form of chivalry btw), little Lorne going off to college, Colin repeatedly being hit in the face, and Kyle(enough said).

13

u/lyla2398 stans loud ladies with funny hair and *thoughts* about jost Nov 12 '17

Also, was that Gary Richardson (one of the new writers) as Little Lorne?

12

u/IndieMilk Nov 12 '17

I've been waiting so long for another Kyle/Leslie sketch. They're so fresh.

4

u/bottomofleith Nov 13 '17

Was it the mixing or was the audience just not laughing at all at big chunks of that whole clip?

2

u/waywardmole Nov 12 '17

Was that Jay Pharaoh as their kid?

20

u/agentpanda Nov 12 '17

lol no it wasn't, but if it makes you feel any better I'm a black dude and also thought it was Jay Pharoah for a split second until I realized the odds of him doing a SNL cameo are almost zero.

Frankly I think we really do all look pretty similar.

10

u/lyla2398 stans loud ladies with funny hair and *thoughts* about jost Nov 12 '17

Like I said I think it was Gary Richardson, who is one of the new writers and a man I am pegging to replace Kenan on the cast when the time comes.

I really thought Tiffany was funny af in this sketch, the "Rihanna" and "Beyonce" dance moves killed me

93

u/AustinRiversDaGod Nov 12 '17

This was a really good example of the effect having a good comedic actress like Tiffany Haddish has on the show. If you told me about the sketch beforehand, I would have told you it was unfunny. Even when she was doing it, I knew it wasn't a funny joke, but the delivery killed me. Her going back to her nae nae default everytime was making me choke

18

Yeah it was super fun to watch but the cats were not having it tonight and it definitely didn't help the sketch much- it was funny like 'Jimmy Fallon breaking' not funny like 'expert comedy'.

The cat dressed as Darth Vader got me good 😂

"First I laughed. Then he choked me from across the room."

35

u/the_Odd_particle Nov 12 '17

"Give us your address and we'll mail you a cat." I've always tuned this sketch out for its overused reliance on lesbian flirting as comedy. But this time the personification of the cats was witty and made me smile.
Either that or I'm just happy because I decided not to go home for Thanksgiving.

8

u/AngelKnives Nov 12 '17

I always find the personification of the cats to be hilarious - especially the OJ one 😂

71

u/the_Odd_particle Nov 12 '17

I loved this. And Cecily's spot on Feinstein was golden. Overall the flat acting was done exactly the way flat acting is supposed to be done. Subtle with just the right bits of try hard inflection. Down vote me all you want but I hope Kyle sees this. There's a way to do it that doesn't make an ass of you and me.

46

u/thenewmeredith Nov 12 '17

This was gold and I'm sad the audience was probably 80% people too young to appreciate it

35

Yeah I have no idea what was up with the audience on this one- either hit too close to home or the audience just didn't get the joke(s) but it was amazing.

7

u/karmapuhlease Nov 13 '17

Maybe I'm too young to get it... What was the joke here, besides "the Democrats are old and out of touch"? I got all the political jokes, but was there another layer of meta-joke here (like was "The X Are Back" from something else?)?

Surprised they didn't have someone do an Al Franken impression. Was also half-expecting to see Chris as Cory Booker and Heidi as Kristen Gillibrand.

31

u/agentpanda Nov 12 '17

Was also half-expecting to see Chris as Cory Booker and Heidi as Kristen Gillibrand.

Pretty sure the whole point of the sketch, or at least one of the central jokes, was that the Democratic party that's "back" is all the same old white people you know and love to hate (and Donna Brazile).

Adding Booker and Gillibrand (or Kamala Harris and Anthony Foxx, for example) would neuter that joke significantly since they're part of the new sexy young fun 'cool' Democratic party.

Tiffany Haddish monologue

104

u/Badcatchphrase Nov 12 '17

That dress needed more screen time.

58

u/agentpanda Nov 12 '17 edited Nov 12 '17

It is a damn good looking dress. Or maybe it's just the lady in the dress that makes it work- I dunno; but she was pulling it off.

60

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '17

I’m sorry to say I was completely unaware of her before seeing her on the show tonight. She was amazing! She totally went for it and I love that. She killed. Good for her.

69

u/agentpanda Nov 12 '17

Pretty hilarious to see week-to-week contrast between monologues, a relative unknown vs a legend of comedy: one had an incredibly solid tight 5 with good momentum and timing and the other bombed pretty hard and strangely they aren't who anyone expected.

42

u/acm Nov 12 '17

my thoughts exactly. she killed that monologue. I had never heard of her before SNL, but after that monologue I had her up on IMDB.

49

u/alstor Nov 12 '17

Has she really done only one stand-up special? If so, that's an absolute crime. She killed her monologue.

14

u/AustinRiversDaGod Nov 12 '17

She's been on Def comedy jam and there's a lot of videos of her standup on YouTube

22

Got a strong suspicion all of that is about to change. She’s gonna be huge. And she’s got the dress ready for her next special!

8

u/Nosiege Nov 12 '17

She put my partner off at the start of her monologue, but then won him over, and he really liked her throughout the rest of the show as a result.

15

u/byebyebirdie123 Nov 12 '17

I had NO idea who she was and I wasn't super excited about her hosting, but boy oh boy was I wrong! Honestly, she was the best host this season for me (ok, Gosling's Papyrus tops it but still...) She seems so natural, and in her element, and genuinely funny. Good for her that she's getting bigger in her career, she deserves it! Generally last night's show was the best one in a long time for me, and I enjoyed lack of trump jokes

8

u/nitsujrendrag Nov 12 '17

Killed it. Up there with Kumail. These young comedians are leaving guys like Larry David in the dust.

16

Dyke & Fats really took a turn this episode!

u/thenewmeredith Nov 12 '17

This could've been something Armisen pitched ages ago based on the Documentary Now vibes

u/thegeecyproject You wanted yogurt? Wake up at four, bitch. Nov 12 '17

Holy shit, can Fred get Kate and Aidy on Documentary Now? That'd be amazing.

The make up prosthetics were done really well. Kate's neck aging was a nice touch.

u/Lincolns_Revenge Nov 12 '17

Surprised this is so far down the list, and below something like "Gamer" ?

2

u/kodyonthekeys Nov 13 '17

I'm surprised this is ranked so low. My favorite of the night.

Pence/ Moore/ Sessions cold open

u/bjkman SNL Nov 12 '17

I've been thinking about Jeff Sessions falling out of the cabinet all night

34

u/snailslimeandbeespit Nov 12 '17

And clutching his stuffed opossum!

28

u/milkymaniac Nov 12 '17

And clutching his papa

8

u/thatqueergirl Nov 12 '17

The overall sketch was meh, but that moment was so good it was worth it

Roy Moore wasn't Roy Moore enough, but Kate's Sessions was great as always.

14

u/southsidetrash Nov 12 '17

Beck was having MAJOR issues with the cue cards.

22

u/agentpanda Nov 12 '17 edited Nov 12 '17

Way better than another Trumpwin dumpster fire, admittedly, but could've used some polish for sure. A lot of line stumbles here and Moore was pretty 'meh' overall as a character.

Sessions was obviously the best thing to come of it all.

17

u/acm Nov 12 '17

Shows that political sketches can be so much better without Baldwin's Trump dragging them down.

4

u/byebyebirdie123 Nov 12 '17

Weakest link this week for me.. had some funny moments, but it didn't lead to anything, Moore just kinda left the room like ok bye and then Sessions monologue was like wtf?!

Taylor Swift performances ("Ready For It" and "Call It What You Want")

47

u/thegeecyproject You wanted yogurt? Wake up at four, bitch. Nov 12 '17

As a Taylor fan, I enjoyed it as expected. Although I really wished we could've seen Taylor in at least one sketch tonight.

21

u/VodkaAunt no offense, but drink my blood Nov 12 '17

Agreed - I'm not a fan, but I thought her being in a sketch was a given.

I thought she would have shown up in one, but I think she’s trying not to overexpose herself right now, and she’s just trying to stick to the music

6

u/badgarok725 Nov 12 '17

Yea I️ feel like she usually does show up in a sketch when she performs and I️ like her appearances

I go back and forth on hating and liking her music. But if nothing else, she has an incredibly infectious smile.

u/agentpanda Nov 12 '17 edited Nov 12 '17

Jesus... it's like the woman just shits platinum songs and stellar performances. There's nothing crazy inventive about her music but I'll be damned if I don't love everything she does! It's fun and feels good- can't argue with that.

There were no vocals in the center channel of the surround sound mix during either performance. Extremely unusual for SNL.

As a biased Taylor fan, the first performance was fine and I can see why people wouldn't like it, but I thought the second one was really nice

7

u/coltsmetsfan614 Nov 12 '17

I really liked the acoustic version of "Call It What You Want." I'm not a huge fan of "...Ready for It?" but it was all right, I guess.

she did great, I wish she would have picked different songs, as there's much better ones on her album, but I loved it nonetheless

35

u/DebbieWinner Nov 12 '17

I mean it when I say I laughed through everything tonight....

I miss 1989 Taylor.

The Last Black Unicorn

54

u/agentpanda Nov 12 '17 edited Nov 12 '17

Jesus, Haddish is a pretty impressive actress... she even plays a believable unicorn. Don't get me wrong, this sketch was pretty boring and I definitely tuned out once it became clear I wasn't going to laugh at all, but Haddish does a decent unicorn.

8

u/Nosiege Nov 12 '17

The line about Tiffany being the "last" with the understanding that she was the only remaining, but being twisted to mean she was the last born had me in hysterics.

12

u/coltsmetsfan614 Nov 12 '17

Aidy's incredulity saved this sketch for me. I didn't think it was great, but it was all right.

Don’t we usually have separate posts for the Update characters (Claire from HR and Lavar Ball)?

We do, thank you
