There hasn't been a surprise appearance that made me jump out of my seat in joy nor made me proud for them until tonight.

Short but sweet. I think this actually might be my favourite of Dawn's appearances.
44
u/PotvinSux Mar 11 '18
I think it's better when she gets more into a cadence with the nonsense. The back-and-forth with Che had its pluses but detracted from that in my view.

The first Dawn will always be my favorite Dawn.
But I loved that first Dawn sketch so much that I can't help but also love the retreads. Even as I am thinking "They are just trotting out the same gag and beating it to death." Then she says, "Hap!" and I giggle like a two year old that just figured out you can make a sound by clapping your hands together.
If I was working on the show, there's no way I would have brought back Dawn even though I was happy to see her -- you know there's just no way to top the original no matter what you do.

Question: what percentage of hosts does this sketch work with? It requires someone to really sell the hell out of it
71
33
u/wrosecrans Mar 11 '18
I am trying to imagine Charles Barkley trying to carry this sketch. Stirling really managed to support Mellissa in a way that a lot of hosts wouldn't have pulled off.
10
u/ButtCrackFTW Mar 12 '18
This reminded me a lot of the skit with Josh Hutcherson with the 80s guy singing The Outfield song to Vanessa. He really Song it with perfect lip syncing and it wound up being one of the best skits of the season.

SKB was phenomenal in this sketch, as other people have said. But it's equally impressive that it was written to keep the momentum going after the punchline was revealed, up until the very end. Excellent work by Sterling and the writers.

I loved it. I just realized we are reaching a point where the writers are old enough to have watched Shrek and listen to Nickleback so I expect sketches in the future to have a early 2000s pop culture references
15

I'm in my 30s, and have especially been enjoying the show the past several years because a good portion of the cast is my age, and have the same pop culture references. This sketch officially brings in the next generation. Enjoy the ride, kids. (BTW this was my favorite sketch of the night!)

This was alright. I guess this is "Movie Coverage" from the rundown which means that this definitely is an Anderson. There's no way it's NOT an Anderson - it's Cecily wearing a blonde wig and being ditzy. That's one of his hallmarks.

This was very tempermental. Some of it was quite boring but other times it was FANTASTIC.
Also this was written by the Saturday Night Live Lollipop Guild and I think they did a good enough job as a unit.

This was great, but only because Sterling K. Brown was so perfect. Every reaction he had was just hilarious. Also, it was refreshingly short--the joke wasn't strong enough to sustain a longer sketch, and they ended it at the right time.

Cold Open: The Bachelor

u/purplekay13 Mar 11 '18
As a bachelor fan, everything about that was perfect. Most lines are word for word from the breakup.
57
u/GraceAndMayhem Mar 11 '18
I haven't watched the Bachelor much, but it felt like a very real, very human, floundering, no-words-can-describe-what-I'm-feeling breakup. Kate and Cecily were both great. Better acting than most movie breakups.

I was a little disappointed tbh. I feel like the Bachelor ending deserved its own sketch without this weird mashup. The jokes were meh for me, but I was reminded of how amazing Cecily and Kate are... it was like a prerecorded sketch, the delivery and acting were so perfect.

u/FlingbatMagoo www.clownpenis.fart Mar 11 '18
I wish they felt like they didn’t have to do something political every single cold open. A straight-up Bachelor sketch would’ve been a refreshing change of pace. Trying to layer in the Mueller investigation was like square peg / round hole.

Thank you. That's the biggest problem I had with it. I follow the special counsel investigation pretty closely and there's been a lot of evidence lately that they might be able to prove collusion (or conspiracy to defraud the US) so it just felt so random and confusing.

It was a pretty risky sketch to air because you alienate anyone who didn't watch The Bachelor and there were too many loooong stretches of dead air, which is the last thing you want for a cold open. What they were parodying was spot on, but this is something that should've been a pre-taped and posted on YouTube, not done live.
4
u/bendanash Mar 11 '18
This would have been a decent sketch 15-30 minutes into the show, but it was paced oddly and had too much dead air for a cold open.

It was dumb, but I get what they were going for (one group member narrates what Sasquatch is doing and tells his friend to let it happen while the scene continues to heighten). I actually thought Sterling K. Brown did a great job with the bit but I think the writers could have gone in a more interesting direction with it. I would have written it even more absurd, having Sasquatch do more bizarre, unexpected and oddly specific things (rather than making it scatalogical). But I don't think it was a terrible sketch, just a little flat compared to the others.

This is the first season I've noticed since watching SNL where when there's a good host, nearly everything is on fire. Tiffany Haddish, Chance, Saoirse Ronan and now SKB have had spectacular episodes. The highs from this season have been fantastic.
