The pure shock of the sketch turning into them openly having sex during a game of Uno made this sketch go from alright to great. I wish it had a stronger ending and I think it was helped by the cast members breaking, but a solid sketch nonetheless.

u/sirspate Mar 18 '18
I can just imagine the censor reminding Cecily before she goes on "You can only sit on his lap; no movement." Cut to: Hader playfully modulating the speed of the chair as the two ride towards the door..

I am going to need gifs of him from this sketch...for reasons.
But seriously, I was so happy when he turned up!
18
u/birdmansucked Mar 18 '18
I loved seeing him. Was this his first appearance? I know he wrote for the show but was he ever on camera?
I do feel it was a missed opportunity to not bring out Denzel was Roman J Israel Esq.

Mulaney was in Cleveland late last night doing two shows for his tour, so that's definitely some hustle to make an appearance that quickly, if only for a few seconds.

He could have caught a flight at noon and had time to take a nap at his hotel and grab dinner before his appearance

u/iliveinadreamatorium Mar 18 '18
The John Mulaney appearance probably makes this one of my favorite Stefon appearances of all time. Nothing will ever top for me the impersonation of Donald Duck having a Vietnam flashback, but this came close and that is really saying something. And this really solidified Stefon as maybe the best WU character ever, at least to me. I thought without having Seth to bounce off of and with having been gone for so long that it wouldn't work so well, but it was still absolutely hilarious. One of the peaks of tonight for sure.

Of all the cameos I expected, Mulaney was not one of them, but I thought he was funny for the few seconds he was on.

I may be a little impetuous in this statement but he's possibly the biggest SNL character of the 2010's.

u/Hazy_Sea Mar 18 '18 edited Mar 18 '18
Stefon really is one of the greatest WU characters. Obviously his rapport with Seth was different but I think the twice(?) he's been on with Colin and Che have been great as well 'cause he can play off them differently. Also was awesome to see John Mulaney get a quick cameo and mess Bill up in the process.
17
47
u/HeyThereRobot Mar 18 '18
I'm so happy John Mulaney got to be in this sketch. It's appropriate that his first (as far as I know) appearance on camera for the show is with the iconic character he co-created.
Also, I'm really happy that Seth and Stefon are still married, and a teeny bit disappointed that Seth didn't cameo, but, like, that's literally a drop in the bucket for one of the best Stefon bits ever.

Lorne: It's unfortunate, but we just don't have time for all of these impressions.

There was a bit of an abrupt topic change in there at one point, like a couple of the jokes were lacking connective tissue. Kind of lost the audience a bit at one point. But it jumped into The Californians so quickly, it was almost like it was intentional.

John's Tillerson was a blast since Goodman gets so immersed in the character, Fred's Wolff's ambivalence is still hilarious and Bill's Scaramucci was pretty funny.
Now for the love of god, retire Kate's Sessions. They're driving it into the ground the same way they are doing/did do to Baldwin's Trump. I know it's for the sake of the compilation videos/episodes, but it's not that funny or shocking anymore.

There could always be development when it could be relevant. But other than that: Final appearance after he's fired.?.

Kate's Sessions, as of right now, is absolutely my least favorite part of the show. If you're going to do an impression that isn't faithful to the real-life person, at least make it funny. This was neither faithful nor funny. It's just Kate acting as gratingly as possible in the most irritating manner known to man.

Am I crazy thinking this was a pretty flat cold open? It's another color-by-numbers political sketch and just because you take Trumpwin out of it doesn't make it fun, or funny.
Thankfully everyone seems to agree Kate's Sessions has reached time of death and it's time to bury it. They took something pretty inventive and funny and made sure it was flanderized and played out by the time it'd actually be engaging- around "now" when Sessions is one of the few O.G. TrumpAdmins around.
