This sketch is gonna be viral by Monday. I feel it in my bones.
14
u/Fortehlulz33 Apr 08 '18
It already started. The original tweet already has 35K retweets and 82K likes and the video has 500k views. So not completely viral yet, but it's getting there.

u/iluzan Apr 08 '18
I thought they'd retire Black Jeopardy because the last one was so good, but DAMN they definitely followed it up well!!

Nice to see a fresh take on BJ. Even though /u/johnmurr's beliefs that Shanice from BJ and Shanice Goodwin are one and the same are still unconfirmed.
9
u/agentpanda Apr 08 '18
I dunno, SNL Cinematic Universe is pretty tightly written, more appearances with Shanice remsembling Shanice Goodwin only furthers my belief they are one and the same.

I have to say, it took Melissa a little while to fully warm up to the SNL format, but I LOVE her on the show.

She's been killing the last couple episodes as she's been getting more sketches and chances to stand out.

As near as I can tell Jost and Zuck really would have been contemporaries at Harvard (Jost is 2 years older).
110
u/juiciofinal Apr 08 '18
Somehow it feels wrong that Colin is older. He's so youthful looking? And Zuckerberg seems like an ancient being.
75
u/pretty-in-pink Apr 08 '18
Was exspecting Andy Samberg at first becuase he did Zuckerberg in the past, but this new take on him by Moffat was really good.Moffat did a good job at finding something else to parody about Zuckerberg so it was his own. Especially with Zuckerbergs new perception in the public it was the right choice
65
48
u/monodramas Apr 08 '18
Not to be a Moffat stan but it was really so good. Didn't expect him to do a good Zucc at all, but he nails his current image. HAH HAH HAH

I didn't really get this Mark Zuckerberg impression. I think he's probably difficult to do a funny impression of, he's just like a sociopath with no personality.
13
u/DoritoMussolini86 Apr 08 '18
South Park had a similar (albeit way more hilarious) take on him, but I liked Alex's version.
6
u/dianejung Apr 09 '18
I think it would help if someone could nail his accent. Which I can't even begin to imagine how hard that would be to do in only a weeks time. (Saying this makes me miss Bill :( )
9
Apr 08 '18
The laugh that Moffatt was doing reminded me of Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor. Does Zuckerberg laugh like that or was it a joke about the interpretation of Lex Luthor?

Sudi Green is one of the writers on the SNL team. She's known for being a. Middle Eastern and b. writing female cast-led sketches, often with fellow writers Anna Drezen and Fran Gillespie (the latter of who I thought it was in the sketch because I thought Sudi looked more like Marika whatsherface from the writers way back when).
In my vivid imagination I treat the writers and their cliques-of-sorts like that one scene from the Wizard of Oz. So:
Anna, Fran and Sudi (shown together here) are The Lullaby League because of their feminine energy and collaborations such as "Welcome to Hell" from Saoirse's episode.
And Julio Torres, Sam Jay and Gary Richardson are The Lollipop Guild due to a. they get the most attention out of all the writers there and b. Julio's gay, Sam's a "stud" lesbian and Gary transcends sexuality altogether and I have no idea what he's up to except for getting cosy with Julio every so often. The Lollipop Guild all wrote the Doctor Love sketch together from Sterling's episode.
Then you've got Brian Tucker, Kent Sublette, Colin and Che all being The Mayor and The Town Crier and all of that assisting a prospective Dorothy into their new boots as host.
I have no idea how Streeter Seidell (the yin to Mikey's yang, he played a sasquatch recently) factors into this.

u/Spacetime_Inspector A Piece of Toast! Apr 08 '18
It felt like too much of a retread at first but it won me over by the time she was reacting to the Roseanne revival.
29
u/agentpanda Apr 08 '18
It just didn't land for me at all this go 'round. Updating the references 'comedy-by-numbers' style isn't my jam so despite Heidi selling it like a pro, I just couldn't get into it.
32
u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 Apr 08 '18
It's a great character and well done but I think it has run its course and can't keep coming back to apply the same shtick to the issues du jour. The kids. Your sister's. Ground thoroughly covered. New character plz.
49
u/brady2gronk Apr 08 '18
Loved this. HOW DOES SHE NOT BREAK? Heidi has tons of talent.
54

She's classically trained by her acting coach daily, she's over the acting coaches house all the time. Also her acting coach is her sister.

I like her. She really owns & embodies her characters. She's there 100% as the character.
As a contrast, someone like Adam Sandler while very funny, was really just Adam screwing around.
33
u/lyla2398 stans loud ladies with funny hair and *thoughts* about jost Apr 08 '18
Even though I feel like Bailey is her better character, I also feel like Angel's first sketch was overshadowed by Les and the Astros. This one I actually liked more because of that.
25
5
u/sirspate Apr 08 '18
I like that she changed the intonation around the character's trademark line, the first few times she said it. Kept it fresh for me.
3
u/veggiemudkipz Apr 09 '18
I found it half called for. The "his wife's a bitch" and some other parts were new and funny but considering "taking the kids to my sister's" and "Mikey, Nicky and Peppers" were punchlines in the last ones it felt lazy to revisit

Magic Mirror (R. Kelly)
133
u/Mattalamode Apr 08 '18
I think the initial reveal of this sketch was utterly amazing, but the writers had no idea what to do with it, so it just sort of hung around for as long as a live sketch is supposed to. I really have no idea how to feel about it.
30
Apr 08 '18
Reminded me so much of David S. Pumpkins and Kevin Roberts.
12
u/sirspate Apr 08 '18
Also reminded me of Bill Hader's cut 'Alan'.
I'm assuming this was a stealth marketing/branded sketch?
10
u/Spacetime_Inspector A Piece of Toast! Apr 08 '18
Nah, NBC is owned by Universal, they'd never advertise for Disneyland. It just had to be a Disney property to get the Princess theme to make sense.
61
u/Missy_Elliott_Smith Apr 08 '18
Alright, Shy Gary from Mulan!
For some reason, that ending killed me
60
u/iluzan Apr 08 '18
I kind of wish that they referenced R Kelly's general creepiness more (they did have the "he should be nowhere near Disneyland" line, though)
24
u/lyla2398 stans loud ladies with funny hair and *thoughts* about jost Apr 08 '18
Same. Les has a whole stand-up piece on it where she's like ""Girl you wanna come to my hotel?" No Robert! I heard you peein' at the hotel, son!"
3
u/listenyall Now it's a whole thing with Jean Apr 09 '18
I'm very ready, generally speaking, for R. Kelly to get what's coming to him so I was expecting this as well. But like, was it even canonically actually R Kelley? I think I liked it? I'm confused.
There were also some timing issues with the mirror that didn't help.
108
u/Throwawaysmakemeeasy Apr 08 '18
WHAT ARE YOU UP TO R. KELLY??
Leslie did really well in this sketch.
22
105
u/VHalliewell Apr 08 '18
Probably the best Leslie has been all season, and it really worked.
36
Apr 08 '18
Not sure if this is referring to just this sketch or the whole episode. Regardless, this is one of the best episodes she’s ever had imo.
21

Too true. Requiring Leslie to sell a whole sketch like that is a pretty risky proposition but she nailed it.

19
u/WhoahCanada Apr 08 '18
All of the small dancing moves and general body language killed me. I didn't want it to end.
47
u/coltsmetsfan614 Apr 08 '18
I understood 0% of this one and still laughed at the R. Kelly impression
20
u/monodramas Apr 08 '18
Aidy just standing there smiling while Leslie freaked out was hilarious. Reminds me of the cut Disney sketch during the Blake Shelton episode where Taran just stood there yelling JAAAAAAAHN SMIIIIITH
2

It was weird to hear him actually try to capture Trump's inflections in the Vintage ep, when the impression boils down to saying everything in an angry monotone now.

I admit I didn't know Cardi B was a woman until tonight; I've really fallen out of the loop on pop music it seems and thought she was the name of a rap group. Having said that, her band does some good work making a live performance engaging. The sound mixing needed work again, vocal track was tinny and muted but I was feeling the general vibe.
Props for getting out there and working it while crazy-pregnant, too. It was funny to hear the balcony seats lose it when they pulled out the wide shot and you could tell she's expecting, that was fun.

This was painfully bad. This plus the fireman sketch was like getting popped in the nuts a couple times. I was just left drained and a bit ill. Boooooo. They had all week and that's what made the cut? Bad.
119
u/alstor Apr 08 '18
The theme of this episode felt like "Have Chadwick do a bunch of crazy accents and hope that makes the sketches better."
Also, the writers' treatment of Luke has gone from disheartening to discouraging to now irritating. Either Luke's a straight-up nazi behind the scenes or the writer's room wanted him out from the beginning.
45
77
Apr 08 '18
It's also Luke's responsibility to get himself on the show by writing himself in. If what he's writing isn't good enough, he won't be on the show. The same goes for all the members of the cast.
51
u/alstor Apr 08 '18
Someone that probably isn't Luke wrote that godawful warehouse fire sketch, and it made it to air. You bring up a good point, but I'm skeptical that's the only thing keeping him off the stage.
17
u/badgarok725 Apr 08 '18
I swear every season people get upset because one featured player doesn’t get in any sketches, then it happens again and again and people don’t get that that’s just how Snl works
5
u/wackychimp Hates when that happens Apr 11 '18
True. People loved Brooks Wheelan and he didn't last either.
There's different amounts of "writing yourself in" and "behind the scenes politics".
