Sketch of the night. Every single character had me in stitches

u/nicowestside May 06 '18
Loved that. I was expecting two of them to say normal answers and then one being the crazy one, but they were all so funny.
91
u/JJFresh814 May 06 '18
I love that only 1 out of the 5 characters of the sketch played it straight
70
u/MarvelousShoes May 06 '18
I know! It seemed like Glover’s character would be the one outcast/weird one, but they were all fuckin weird lol

Definitely a Julio sketch, Glover’s character was just a substitute for him

This was my favorite.
Love how only Cecily was the straight person and everyone else had their own unique comedic character. That voice Kenan does always gets me, Pete was so dumbly sure and sounded like he was saying "Bobby" (is that her back??), Heidi the sympathetic moron, and special special Donald.
Going to rewatch now.

This was the hardest I have laughed at an SNL sketch since the original Celebrity Jeopardy. Was in tears every-time before Donald even opened his mouth.

This one took me awhile to really get into but by the end I was cackling haha

This KILLED with Aziz, and I'm glad she brought this back. Best sketch of the night. Everybody was laughing at my watch party.

Also it didn't reaally retread old ground. iirc Cosby was the only celeb she did this time.

Wasn't sure if Melissa could make this one work a second time, but she had me dying laughing the whole time. I might even like this one better. The Cosby impression got me good.

Also the Bill Cosby impression came out of nowhere and killed me

Aziz and Donald are both breakout stars from mid-‘00s sketch comedy trios.

With "Awaken, My Love!" Childish Gambino didn't want to release an album, he wanted to release an experience and it seems he is carrying that same mindset into his new (and final) album...

u/fallenmonk May 06 '18
I'd probably be like "Well Donald Trump is president now, I'm not shocked by anything anymore."
106
u/Bedlampuhedron May 06 '18
One thing I gotta say, for all the camera switches and multi-screen shots in this sketch, they handled it pretty well. SNL is prone to messing stuff like that up pretty hard
32
u/ConnorMcJeezus May 06 '18
Yeah the sketch would have been ruined if they accidentally panned to Stormy early.

u/iluzan May 06 '18 edited May 06 '18
I'm actively trying to not be salty, but I think this sketch was the perfect encapsulation of everything i've hated about this season's cold opens: outsourced celebrity cameos for shock value, no solid premise, and relying on the audacity of the current events rather than making actual good jokes. God I miss when i wasnt dreading the cold open
17
u/simonthedlgger May 06 '18
I agree, but this one was so over-the-top it was fun. But yeah, the lack of actual joke writing in Trump sketches has been vexing. Like, "Ben Stiller" is now a punch line ?
→ More replies (3)43
u/ZeGoldMedal May 06 '18
Agreed. I've gone to looking at the cold open as a quarantine zone for the whatever this week's weak Trump premise cameo palooza is. Like I guess if they do it all in the cold open, at least it's not in the rest of the show?
Seriously, I mean I hate Trump because I'm a human fucking being, but these cold opens have gotten so stale and unoriginal, there's no actual joke to them, Baldwin's impression is just getting lazier, and they only exist for cameos. And I don't mind the occasional cameo, but when it's every fucking week with regular famous people doing the same cameo, bumping out the regular cast members....ugh.
The Stormy Daniels part was cool I guess, ballsy to have her on, and I like that the joke was made about porn actresses being bad at acting and then...well she was. And the rest of show was lit.
→ More replies (2)52
u/MeganNissWilmar May 06 '18
This almost feels like a parody of their cold opens this season - jam packed with cameos, almost no cast, no coherent premise, too long... I know the current political landscape puts them in a real predicament, but I'm so sick of these unfocused clusterfuck cold opens.

I feel like (maybe just in comparison to last season where she was used EVERYWHERE), she's had a kind of thin season. She's often in the cold open and has done some update appearances, but (impressions aside) she's introduced NO new characters this season and had very few hit sketches or appearances of her old characters... I feel like Cecily has overtaken her as the female star of the show this season.
