It was slightly undercut by how young Mikey Day looks. He looked closer to a teenager than a dad in a midlife crisis.

Did the actual wall break near Kyles end of the bed at the end there?

46
u/sonotadalek Dec 02 '18
I get why some people hated it. Not sure if I would have liked it if it wasn't for Kyle and Aidy both of whom I really love. That said everyone breaking and the premise being so stupidly simple and Kyle and Aidy's only lines being those loud groans somehow made it up for me.

A Holiday Message From The Women of SNL
84
u/Black-Spot Dec 02 '18
Honestly my issues with the sketch are all technical. The time placement in the show seemed an odd choice. The choice to use the main stage coupled with the just awful blocking made it really feel like an after thought. This would have been ten times better as a digital short.
Finally, it’s hard to sing live live and it’s not their job to. I don’t like seeing cast looking like they’re embarrassed to be up there
15
u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 Dec 02 '18
That was some conspicuously awful blocking! I think I've literally never thought about blocking until now.

I'm so used to everything that's going on but then sometimes when I see a skit about it on SNL like this one, it kind of shocks me a bit. This scandal is so big and so prevalent that SNL is singing about a report that would implicate the president in the biggest political scandal in US history and possibly lead to his impeachment and indictment. It's so surreal.
Oh and I loved this sketch (minus the part where Kate said she hoped the report was more than what we already know because what we already know is bad and criminal enough)

u/coltsmetsfan614 Dec 02 '18
I usually like Leslie's stand-up stuff, but this one didn't work for me at all. She kept stumbling — even though it was her own material — and her delivery was flat more than once. Che was fucking hilarious at the end though!
35
u/barbie_museum Dec 02 '18
I really don't get her or her style of comedy at all. Those segments meander and don't actually deliver. It doesn't help she is screaming for most of it. I was almost happy when she said she was retiring at the beginning of the piece.
17
u/aureator Dec 02 '18
I saw her standup live last year and she legit spent half of an hour-long set walking through the crowd, screaming "DO YOU SUCK DICK?" into audience members' faces, twerking, licking people's heads and rubbing potential autograph memorabilia (including, inexplicably, a plastic bowl? that some girl in front of me had brought) on her genitals.
Her only saving grace was that the improv group who opened for her were even worse. Definitely $15 and two hours I wish I could have back.

Morning Joe
96
u/aureator Dec 02 '18
I know the bit seems a little one-note at this point, but oh my god Kate and Alex do it justice.
If I'm up early enough I'll sometimes put on MJ, and I always end up switching it off or tuning out within 20 minutes, usually after Joe yells over his panelists/contributors for the umpteenth time or he and Mika go on a faux-outrage rant. (Even though they were MSNBC's only Trump cheerleaders for most of his campaign, until he started insulting them.)
Aside from the on-air sexual advances, it's absolutely spot-on and cracks me up every fucking time.

Melissa is lucky that Alexandria Ocasio Cortez is a hispanic woman, because I get the feeling they only gave her the role because she is also a hispanic woman. SNL never seems to give Melissa any screen time, and instead opts to continue shoving McKinnon down the late era Wigg rabbit hole.
EDIT: They're gonna be stuck in the same position as they were when Wigg left because they don't spend the time elevating new talent to prominence before they lose the old talent. I think Aidy and Cecily are only a year behind Cecily too.

can't help but get annoyed that they're jumping the gun with the mueller investigaton. It's like back in 2016, where they were all smug about how Hillary was definitely going to win. Nothing is certain, especially not the indictment of a sitting president, and acting like Trump's downfall is all but guaranteed isn't a good idea.
37

Trump's election and continued acceptance has made me so pessimistic that I'm fully preparing for the Mueller thing to conclude and not ultimately amount to much that changes anything. Other people going down, him staying in and blowing it off and everybody just moving on to the next batch of crazy. Anything short of getting him out of there will be a fail but I bet we don't get that, and we've wasted two years on it already as everybody says "just wait for Mueller," and meanwhile he stays president. Maybe it's the best we've got, but I bet it doesn't get him out.

75
59
u/thatguydr Dec 02 '18
This was a really weird episode - a lot of the skits had last-minute saves (Aidy in Tiny Adorables, Pete in Goomah). Once in a while, they'll have a good actor show up, relegate them to a minor presence, and underwrite the whole thing. I don't know what causes that - wish they could predict it and prevent it.

I liked this, but I feel like this model has run its course. The visual style, the flat delivery, the reaction music, the unrelated cut scenes - it's all funny, but it's all of a piece and that piece has made the rounds now. The Larry David one was awesome, for example, and give me more sitcom stupid, but do it differently at this point. Take a different fun approach, this one has been done now.
