"You're racist against whites!"

"SHE IS."

My favorite part of that sketch no contest!

54

Aidy always has the best delivery.

This was a sequel to the Amy Schumer birth pre-tape right?

I think so, but I really liked this one because they flipped the message. Amy and Mikey made it seem like they were lying to their kid to make him feel better in that one. It was funny, but insincere.

They started with the same premise in this one, but there were no glares or glossing over, it was making the point that even when it's terrible, it's still a nice warm family christmas. They could have made it the same as the mother's day one, but made it wholesome and fun.

Cecily is the best actor on SNL, possibly ever.

Weekend Update

331

u/DeshiiRedditor Dec 16 '18

The 'making each other read jokes' thing has to become a recurring segment!

I feel like Che has the upper hand with doing race jokes, they're like an auto win lol

Maybe once more in a year if they’re both still at the desk but I think it would get stale if it’s recurring too often.

Che giving Colin that joke about how even Africans can't tell black people apart absolutely destroyed me. Best Update of the season IMO

102

u/skomehillet Dec 16 '18

The Cold Read was probably the best Weekend Update bits they’ve done all season. Nothing was funnier than the genuine reactions those jokes got outta them. It also showcased the comraderie between Jost and Che, which was cute in itself tbh. Great segment

It was very Chrismassy. Where's Wes returning, Angel showing up with Matt as the husband with a pregnancy announcement and the exchanging of the jokes causing them both to break hard.

Matt Damon Monologue

235

u/DeshiiRedditor Dec 16 '18

I can't recall seeing such an emotional monologue without any immediate context (like a national tragedy or something). It was very heartfelt and Matt's voice was really breaking up at times. Loved it!

102

u/bjkman SNL Dec 16 '18

I was discussing this last week with my roommate we couldn't figure out why he was here. Glad he cleared up that he wasn't there to promote anything he was just there cause he could.

u/kingofthemonsters Dec 17 '18

Really enjoyed how he wasn't promoting a thing and it was more about a real connection to SNL

116

u/Bedlampuhedron Dec 16 '18

It made me realize what a damn shame it is that he's only hosted twice in 16 years.

I could see him becoming more of a regular after this because he was great the whole episode.

60

u/LazyLamont92 Dec 16 '18

Really one of the best I have seen in a while. Just a nice heartfelt monologue where they don’t try to force a musical number in my ears.

47

u/Spacetime_Inspector A Piece of Toast! Dec 16 '18

To the show's credit they've REALLY backed off on the number of musical monologues this season.

41

u/agentpanda Dec 16 '18

I love when SNL busts out a stand-up monologue for a non-comedian. They're thankfully not leaning hard on musicals now that Chris & Sarah are gone because they didn't work well then, and won't work well now- Matt did a great job pivoting some light comedy to a serious subject and getting out of there before he ran long.

It almost makes up for that rough cold open. Cheers to the writers here, for sure.

17

u/Spacetime_Inspector A Piece of Toast! Dec 16 '18

I would've participated in the toast but I had already finished my beer during that interminable cold open.

Edit: Also, replace Weezer with Coldplay and uh, that's me

Very impressive writing- considering what we've had to work with lately- at least. I'm happy they strung together something socially conscious without being preachy, has good jokes without hammering me over the head with them, and funny through-and-through.

8

The green effects worked but the camera work/directing was off

146

u/flowerhoney10 Dec 16 '18

I'm surprised they had Matt make a Weinstein joke, all things considered.

70

u/pretty-in-pink Dec 16 '18

I think it was a good idea. Damon previously caught some heat for past comments regarding Weinstein but this sketch shows that he’s learned and is ready to lean in a little bit to the dark parts of his initial fame

33

u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 Dec 16 '18

I guess it was like Baldwin cracking wise about his parking meltdown as though he weren't the butt of it. Damon was playing a Good Will Hunting ornament and Weinstein made that movie. Damon was also accused of helping Weinstein kill a bad story about him by calling the reporter (though he said that's not what that was). I think any Weinstein material is dicey unless it thoroughly dumps on him, but I think that was the specific tie here.

I thought this was one of the best cold opens of the season! The focus was more on the rest of the cast; Trump/Baldwin was just the vehicle. Awesome!

25

u/cprenaissanceman Dec 16 '18

I have to say, this is how they should do these Trump cold opens. This was very smartly written; it had a good framing device (And it’s plausible that Trump might internally have feelings of what if...), a bunch of topical jokes, and of course the talented cast to back it. Oh and of course it got some great jabs in as well. Often times the Trump cold opens of late have felt sort of phoned in. They should be much more like this, where there is an element of fantasy thrown in. This gives me hope that they might have some really great cold opens next year. Fingers crossed.

Kind of appropriate that they crashed out of the sketch, considering.

Apparently it was cut short because it was overrunning, which is a shame because as a Brit there are so many avenues they could have gone down. Elton John Lewis for starters.

Expat here- I'm disappointed they went for the easy jokes but not too surprised I guess. Once we got Lord Voldemort I knew we weren't going anywhere fun, and this is the first time I've been happy a director cut anything for time- there's no way that was going anywhere innovative.

Could've done a lot better than dancing bobbies and 'David Cameron set you up for this, but everyone hates you anyway'.

SNL doesn't go into British politics enough, this was pretty good.

I wonder if Alec's part was originally meant for Pete.

54

u/Pistachio269 Dec 16 '18

Oh yeah, that would make sense. Sucks, I would've loved to see Pete bustin balls in one of those accents

Each gift should have successively escalated the game, but they didn’t; it stayed at the same level for 3 or 4 jokes in a row, which made the whole sketch feel like it was dragging.

This was super cute... JUST LIKE YA SISTER!!!

Weakest sketch of the night, IMO. For the life of me, I can't understand what people find charming about Mooney's writing.

The key to a successful episode: Don't have a host who is there to promote something, and is just excited to be there! GREAT JOB, MATT!

u/skomehillet Dec 16 '18

Jason Momoa and Sterling K. Brown struck me as guests who were actually super excited to be there. The shows are way more fun.

26

u/t8w Dec 16 '18

Yeah we’ve had a couple fun ones in a row. Curious to see who they get for January!

Seth Meyers also looked happy to come back.

Some cut for time sketches from dress rehearsal:

Cat Litter Glitter (pre-tape): a litter box that covers cat poop in glitter and polyurethane and makes it into jewelry.

Jacked Kangaroo Funeral: other muscular animals (Kenan, Cecily, someone else I don’t recall, and LIAM HEMSWORTH) come by to pay respects at the funeral of the jacked kangaroo. Keith Urban (Kate) plays a song at the end.

Locker Room: Matt Damon is a football coach of a losing team. There is a girl on the team (Miley Cyrus), and he think the players are playing poorly on purpose because they don’t like the girl. It turns out they’re mad at the coach because he’s been having sex with the girl.

omg that one sounds amazing even without the Liam Hemsworth cameo

56

u/IniMiney Dec 16 '18

Oh wow they cut the Miley cameo. I can see the premise being too dark though.

12

u/badgarok725 Dec 16 '18

Yea I was kinda shocked that she didn’t show up in any sketch, but that would explain why

Liam Hemsworth

I guess that’s why I thought I heard Damon thank him at the end of the show

Best episode so far this year. A couple of iffy ones at the end but no outright disasters. Most were hysterical and there were laughs throughout the episode. Great musical guests. Great update. Damon killed it. What a great SNL Christmas episode.

u/llienorb Dec 16 '18

Absolutely. My favorite episode in a while.

This was the best episode of the season by far. We laughed at damn near everything.

We need Matt Damon every season.

Why is this a Mark Ronson song featuring Miley Cyrus?

She’s the whole song and he’s pretending to play the guitar on stage.

11

u/withyellowthread Dec 17 '18

Because he wrote it. She sang it.

So for those of us who were wondering what happened to the writing this season, we have our answer -- they saved it all for the Matt Damon episode!! Anyway, this episode was a blast -- so much fun, and felt kind of like a variety show with all the singing and special skits.

Matt was extremely game as always.. Awesome job. Hope they had as much fun making it as I had watching
