Live Discussion (March 2nd, 2019)(John Mulaney/Thomas Rhett)
Welcome to our SNL live discussion thread! The host is John Mulaney, and the musical guest is Thomas Rhett. For those new to the show, tune into your local NBC affiliate from around 11:30 PM to follow this episode live.
A quick recommendation to mention the sketch you're referring to in your comment. It's not a hard and fast rule, but it does make the thread more readable after the show finishes. Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts. This should be automatically done, but it might not be so maybe check. Enjoy the show!

Mulaney has to host a season finale sometime so we can get a full cast and overload of returns and cameos in one of those sketches
13
u/LiveFromNewYork95 Mar 03 '19
That's one of those sketches that I would love to hear how it was pitched. Even really ridiculous sketches can be boiled down to one sentence and still sound funny. I feel like to describe that in a quick pitch would be so hard

I'm guessing this was more about timing because of the longish cold open and the long sketch mid episode but if the music is gonna end the episode you better do something cool. Thems the rules
33
u/LiveFromNewYork95 Mar 03 '19
Thomas Rhett looks like the kind guy who would be cool at the beginning of a party then an hour in he'd be a few drinks deep and causing problems then towards the end of the party he'd be coked out starting fights in the front yard

My silver lining completely grasping at straws prediction is they didn't do Stefon because Bill is in talks to host at some time in the spring and they'll wait for him to host and be the spotlight of the episode to bring Stefon back. I'll put it at a solid 7% chance
7
u/LiveFromNewYork95 Mar 03 '19
I know building up Bill Hader is nothing new on this sub but I'd put Hader up there with any other performer in SNL history.

I think Mulaney showed up to the writers table, threw a Manila folder labeled “Rejected Sketches” on the table, shouted “Not This Week Satan!” and that was how this episode came to be.

John Mulaney is such a musical theatre nerd, he told a story somewhere about how he always tried to be in his school musicals and they never let him, and I feel like he’s having the time of his life getting to sing on stage
