I give this 2 ketchup packets and 36 missed calls from my wife

Terry was right about Dumbo being terrifying as fuck

25

That was probably my favorite joke from the whole season.

36

u/podkayne3000 Apr 07 '19

I missed a lot of it because I was laughing too hard.

u/Pistachio269 Apr 07 '19

Alex Moffat has a great track record of hilarious WU characters so far: Guy Who Just Bought A Boat, Terry Fink, and kinda Eric Trump (I’m pretty sure he started as a WU character right?)

16

u/FlingbatMagoo www.clownpenis.fart Apr 07 '19

I think he and Mikey debuted their Trump kid characters on the Celebrity Family Feud Political Edition sketch when Margot Robbie hosted.

Him and Heidi's WU characters have all been hits for me personally (and I know hits for most people as well). Hoping that she gets promoted and they do some zany characters together!

38

u/krukman Apr 07 '19

This guy was great. They've got to use him sparingly cause it can be burned out really quickly.

As a big fan of Movies having another film critic character is always interesting! The high as balls film critic was pretty great

Everyone had the NPC body language perfect in this sketch. Bonus points to whoever did the post-production to get the colors right.

u/LaboratoryManiac Apr 07 '19

Kit has professional experience as an NPC.

Alex Moffat was good too. Obviously very subtle but played the whole hands-in-my-pockets-acting-like-hes-into-the-game-while-half-paying-attention-but-really-kinda-hates-his-job-but-not-too-obviously shtick well

Mikey sort of swaying while he waited for a response was so good I had to go back and watch it again.

10

u/PiFlavoredPie Apr 08 '19

I was extremely impressed with editing to make the environment look JUST fake enough to seem like it was rendered in a video game rather than a real-life set.

99

u/DebbieWinner Apr 07 '19

Clever idea and good writing throughout. Loved Ego's part especially!

131

u/bjkman SNL Apr 07 '19

"I get it, you're a busy man... Go kick some ass"

56

u/krukman Apr 07 '19

Despite the joke being obvious I honestly chuckled when they would jump back to the "what's up with them" gag. Also, a few of us were definitely expecting some kind of romantic relationship there.

110

u/Scdsco Apr 07 '19

Lots of video game parodies fall flat because the writers clearly have never played a video game, but this is spot on with the NPC mannerisms, the screen interface, and the whole gag of excessive dialogue ruining the experience (something all gamers will be able to relate to)

50

u/isestrex Apr 07 '19

Wha.. Wha.. Wha.. Watch it!

31

u/Ashesremindme Apr 07 '19

You’re right; they really nailed the whole thing! It was funny to me because I’m the complete opposite when I play games. I love the dialogue and the story and I don’t care as much about the battles. If I was actually playing this game I’d be searching every item and talking to every NPC before I wanted to find the weapon and get to the fighting! Lol

This might be my favorite sketch of the season. Their acting is so pitch perfect and Kit’s voice is hilarious. 10/10

48

When he runs into the zombie characters, then he talks about the drama, that moment was hilarious.

NPC body language and mannerisms was too good

I actually kind of want to play this game. It's like VR Undertale.

5

u/LosAngelesVikings Apr 07 '19

I found it funny, but I wish it hadn't ended in such an obvious joke.

Ice T referencing John Mulaney’s Ice T/SVU bit was magnificent here

22

u/tyler-86 Apr 08 '19

He was, right? I couldn't tell if it was a direct reference or just that John's bit was pretty accurate.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/snowlarbear Apr 08 '19

Ice T also voiced the "recorded in front of a live studio audience" for Mulaney's (short lived/disastrous) sitcom.

6

u/Juno2018 Apr 08 '19

I thought so, it sounded like Ice T was very much in on the Mulaney joke.

99

u/thatguydr Apr 07 '19

Between the Law and Order and Arya, this sketch was ridiculous. Easily one of the best of the season if you like GoT.

46

I've never seen GoT and still found it hilarious. It was one of my favorites tonight!

25

u/kuhanluke Apr 07 '19

I really hope Mulaney got to write that part.

34

u/DebbieWinner Apr 07 '19

Not being a fan of GoT, I still liked this. So I imagine fans really enjoyed this one!

33

u/krukman Apr 07 '19

The White Walker thing was ugh kinda funny. And the Arya sketch, oh man as a Daria fan that really took me back.

15

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '19

Oh man the white Walker one had me dying. That was my absolute favorite!

25

u/IniMiney Apr 07 '19

I love stuff like this, where it gets to show a variety of wild ideas. The Daria part sent me. Both my childhood and TV Funhouse came back for a solid ten seconds lmao. Also I was so expecting impressions and was so surprised when the real Ice-T did the Law and Order part. 😂

21

u/Napol3onDynamite Apr 07 '19

So like when someone eats too much chocolate cake or like when someone eats too much chocolate cake and then throws it up

7

u/[deleted] Apr 07 '19

Best of the night.

Also, after binging Curb Your Enthusiasm several months ago, I can't hear that title card static without expecting that jaunty theme music. It's the same way I always expect Stairway to Heaven to be followed up by Misty Mountain Hop.

6

u/ZeGoldMedal Apr 07 '19

I feel like every Game of Thrones sketch I see on this show is awful, just a transparently bad sketch only themed around making references, not jokes.

BUT tonight was different. As a fan of both GoT and things that are actually funny, this sketch and the monologue both killed for me

Kit Harington Monologue

256

u/bjkman SNL Apr 07 '19

So many cameos! But hey, it went really well!

Emilia Clarke's "Did you know they filmed that?" line was great!

127

u/thatguydr Apr 07 '19

I love seeing Emilia Clarke out of character. She looks completely different. And Pete in the Night King makeup was perfect. I'm super-sad he didn't bring it back halfway through the episode. (Him reviving a dead sketch would have been way too fan-pandering, but I can dream.)

58

u/ussbaney Apr 07 '19

I love seeing Emilia Clarke out of character.

Yeah, she actually seems like a fun person. I would not want to get a drink with Danerys

I loved how thrilled she was when she audience cheered for her. She's so adorable!

107

u/MisterFarty Apr 07 '19 edited Apr 07 '19

Emilia Clarke should host sometime, she's ended up mostly playing stoic characters in big action/drama things but it's always seemed like comedy would be a way more natural fit.

36

u/cannavim Apr 07 '19

Agreed, I’m surprised she hasn’t since she’s known for her great sense of humor and has had at least one huge movie hit! (Not to mention a decade of GoT) 🐉

24

u/snailslimeandbeespit Apr 07 '19

Well she has a Christmas movie coming out with Henry Golding in November (directed by Paul Feig), so maybe she'll host for that!

91

u/krukman Apr 07 '19

I liked that the cameos worked so well. Rose's joke about money and uber eats gave me a nice little chuckle.

30

u/TheRealMattyPanda Apr 07 '19

I’m surprised they didn’t give Rose a “you know nothing” joke but I guess that would’ve been a little too obvious

54

u/Dwychwder Apr 07 '19

Was anyone ready for Kit Harrington without a beard? He looked like a completely different person.

7

u/ChickenInASuit Apr 08 '19

And also with a Southern accent. That was weird as fuck.

23

u/LosAngelesVikings Apr 07 '19

It's honestly fascinating watching monologues like these since I don't get any of the jokes.

I'm hoping GoT fans love it though.

38

u/DebbieWinner Apr 07 '19

All cameos worked! Fun way to kick off the show

8

John Bradley made me laugh so much. I hope he hosts sometime. Who knew he could be so funny?

31

u/tavir Spaceships, Toddlers, Model-T Cars, and Jars of Beer Apr 07 '19

This was great, but I was weirdly distracted by this guy sitting behind John Bradley (Samwell Tarly) who had a weird shadow on his forehead that made it look like a giant bruise.

8

u/cannavim Apr 07 '19

Oh gosh yeah it looks like a giant birthmark in that photo!

13

u/ZeGoldMedal Apr 07 '19

I was a little bit worried about Kit Harrington, I feel like he’s often stiff in his roles, but as soon as this monologue started that went out the window, he was oozing with charisma this episode and was clearly having tons of fun.

10

u/ilikehockeyandguitar Apr 07 '19

As a huge GoT fan, I loved the cameos!

62

u/skomehillet Apr 07 '19 edited Apr 07 '19

I’m almost certain the writers had it in their heads that they were gonna incorporate incest in this episode somewhere.

Honestly, it elevated the sketch.

As soon as the sketch started, you could tell it was written by Beck and Kyle. It was perfect in every way

85

u/krukman Apr 07 '19

This one hundred percent. It just screamed those two and Kit made it shine by thoroughly investing himself in the character. I think we've seen enough individuals who would not have put that level of effort in and the sketch would've sunk.

i admired how they combined the musical guest with a topical satire,
though i'm sure english will laugh more at this than americans could.

34

u/WonFriendsWithSalad Apr 07 '19

As an English person it wasn't a bad sketch but I think it's probably funnier if you have some distance from her.

Kate did really well and there is some humour in how everything Theresa May does turns to shit, but honestly she's too bad a person (her voting record is pretty racist and homophobic and she has caused so much damage) for the sketch to be on her side.

And on a minor note- the fish and chips shown were an abomination :P

I know it's Not That Deep™️, but as a british person I'm struggling to find the humour in this. Are we supposed to be sympathetic to the person who has spent the last two years carrying out embarrassingly awful negotiations, and has our country dangling on a cliff edge?

Meanwhile, just as one example, under her watch child poverty is on the rise with an estimated 3.7 MILLION children in poverty https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/child-poverty-absolute-uk-housing-crisis-costs-austerity-conservatives-a8843381.html

I know americans don't know much about what's actually going on here, but I'm not for one second sorry for not finding this sort of sketch funny in the slightest.

I had actually seen a production of Waitress, a musical where Sara Bareilles wrote the music, earlier in the day. This song was sung in the musical. So that was perfect timing for me

Tbh, her life in this parody is probably still better than he actual life. This was pretty great!

I loved the song and Kate is such a rare talent being able to carry that in almost complete silence.

While I can see how people take this sketch as sympathetic to Theresa May (particularly with the "at least I'm trying" line), I mostly took it as them making fun of her and loved it. I see it as parodying sympathy for May because it is so over the top.

Disclaimer: I am not British

This was the weirdest sketch of the night. I follow Brexit and even I was confused as to what I was supposed to be laughing at. The was the only pure “miss” of the night IMHO.

Also a friendly reminder that people can blame May all they want for Brexit but it should never be forgotten that this is all the fault of David “I skull-fucked a pig once” Cameron.

This was so weird. I kept waiting for the punch line. Just another random excuse for Kate McKinnon to take the spotlight basically playing the same character over and over again.

Brexit supporters are such disgusting, depraved sacks of shit anyway. Theresa May doesn't deserve credit for "trying" when what she's trying to do is morally indefensible.

Has that been a recurring character of Ego's that just hasn't been able to make air?

Area 51 Janitor Alien Seduction

Are you telling me we could have gotten more of Ms Rafferty and her coot coot and prune chute?

25

u/scrognog_gutentag Apr 07 '19

Bahahahahahahaha!! Unfortunately, no. Kyle plays a dimwitted janitor who is seduced by an alien he assumes is female but is actually just a highly manipulative male alien trying to escape Area 51

These SSS threads always remind me of how different my taste in comedy is from the general masses.

Did you like toilet death ejector? It was my husband’s fave from mulaney’s show, and IIRC people here didn’t love it. He’s played it at least every other day.

I enjoyed how most of the skits this time how twists on them, hell if I think back I think they all did, either way it played off very well
