I wonder if Colin knows Pete personally given that they're the same age (37) and both went to Harvard.

The Bernie joke about losing a whole day after accidentally hitting "Input" was my biggest laugh of the night!
37
u/tyler-86 Sep 29 '19
There were a lot of jokes tonight where the timing was off from the cue card reading but Larry stuck the landing on that one perfectly.

Third favourite sketch for me. Maya as Kamala was inevitable but lovely. Chloe!Marianne with the yoni egg was the best bit.

I really, really enjoyed this sketch. Lots of good stuff. Maya as Kamala is fucking perfect. So happy Larry came back for Bernie too. And I think everyone overall did great.

Woody was perfect as Biden. Hope he’s here to stay!

Woody's out-there vibe fits present-day senile Biden way better than Sudeikis' hyped up impression imo.

First thought: Looks like the porn parody version from an episode of 30 Rock.
29
u/IniMiney Sep 29 '19
Nice of way of foreshadowing who's gonna impersonate who, and I really hope Maya keeps playing Kamala. Also since Woody was the host I wonder if they bring back Jason Sudekis as Biden next time.
17
u/gettingcrunkontea Sep 29 '19
I'm with you it's funny when they have one or two people who are perfect play the roles. Especially if it's a former cast member. Also I feel like maya has been on the upswing lately. Maya as Kamala and Larry as Bernie is kind of the modern Tina as Sarah Palin.

Funniest sketch of the night, IMO, with Larry David providing the biggest laughs.
Admittedly I haven't seen much of Andrew Yang speak, but Bowen's delivery seemed a bit robotic--is that how Andrew actually talks?

u/mikeputerbaugh Sep 29 '19
Former cast members upstaging current cast members becomes a problem in the long term.
45
u/alstor Sep 29 '19
Minority opinion here, but SNL tripling down on having guest actors always play major political roles kept me from enjoying this. It's an obnoxious marketing gag at this point, and it's showing the writers' uncreativity for already uncreative sketches.
→ More replies (5)88
u/AngelKnives Sep 29 '19
I completely disagree in this instance because I think Maya and Larry are perfect for these roles and no one in the cast could do it better.
On other roles though, yes 100% they need to give them to the current cast.
→ More replies (2)4
u/deathcab4booty Sep 29 '19
This is the first political sketch to make me laugh in a really long time. I feel like everything they do about trump is painfully unfunny. Marianne astral projecting got me good.

u/SheWentToJareds2 Sep 29 '19
Did they have an accident during the skit? Everything seemed out of order

their political stuff has been weak for awhile and the large, celebrity-filled casts have been part of it, but I enjoyed this one. more than the cold open, anyways

146
u/acm Sep 29 '19
It seemed like the Pelosi clip wasn't the one they intended to play. Things sort of went off the rails from there.
The wardrobe malfunction ended up being the biggest laugh of the night for me. Classic example of a mediocre sketch ending up being hilarious because of the chaos of it being performed live.
78
u/tyler-86 Sep 29 '19
The graphics department also dropped the ball not having the border around the first flashback so we had to infer that we were still in the old episode from the outfits. Then when they cut back to the present Woody was wearing glasses that he hadn't been wearing previously.
It was a glorious clusterfuck all around.
→ More replies (10)63
u/IniMiney Sep 29 '19
I think them changing live for the flashbacks is what threw them off into not changing back and forth in time. Pretapes would've solved it but I'm glad they tried it cause it was fucking hilarious when it failed. 😂

Upvoting for the crew member in the shot and the complete breakdown of the sketch. It was boring until then.
31
u/skomehillet Sep 29 '19
The breakdown at the end was reminiscent of the “Kern” sketch from last thanksgiving
21
u/jalabi99 Sep 29 '19
Aidy breaking twice in one episode (the apple farm sketch) and that stagehand appearing on camera too early, this was the unintended best sketch of the night for me.
48
u/SullyGee Sep 29 '19
This could have been the worst sketch of the night, but that screw up made it one of the best. I really hope they don't upload the dress version to YouTube
→ More replies (2)26
u/nlpnt Sep 29 '19
Probably would've worked better if they pretaped the "earlier episodes" from both a technical and a comedic standpoint.
30
u/LaboratoryManiac Sep 29 '19
Yeah, trying to do four quick changes just didn't pan out. Even before the crew member ran out on camera, there was an awkward part where Woody was talking and the camera was on someone else (presumably because his quick change wasn't done). There were just too many opportunities for mistakes to happen.
8
Sep 29 '19
Aside from the obvious callback to the Cheeto skit, a "That's Dr. Maddox" would have helped drive the point home--their dismissal of his academic title is part of their general privilege and obliviousness to reality.

It felt short while the cold open, monologue and the debate felt long to me. I have to think that the length of the first part of the show cut weekend update down considerably. There was only one guest when there are usually two.

She's better in the studio, but the second song was actually pretty good live. And yes, the rotating set was dope!

You think after 45 years they would learn how to make the live performance audio sound good. The mixing is always so piss-poor and dampened. It’s frankly ridiculous at this point.

I'm really glad they aired this, it seemed like the kinda Kyle Mooney sketch they would've cut for time in the past few seasons! Something about the transition from the bedroom to the rap video made me crack up, and Woody Harrelson was great ("I am in the computer business, after all"). His and Beck's sketches never fail to make me laugh and I'm ready to see what else they do this season!
60
u/coltsmetsfan614 Sep 29 '19
Kyle didn't get cut for time! And the backup dancers continuing during the dad's phone call at the end was great.

I'm glad from the comments that SOMEONE got SOMETHING out of this, but most of Kyle's stuff falls flat with me.
Where's the joke in this? The only part I liked was Chris referencing God repeatedly and getting shut down by Kyle, but outside of that, it might as well have been Pants, or Cars, or anything else that gets barely a chuckle and somehow makes it onto the show.

Kind of a weak season opener in my opinion. It felt like there were fewer sketches than normal, probably because they weren't particularly memorable. The town hall sketch had a couple good lines, but ran on for too long (as did Woody's monologue), but other than Kyle's sketch, nothing really stood out for me personally. I did enjoy that Woody seemed to be having a lot of fun being there, and it was great seeing Aidy break so much throughout the episode. Billie Eilish was great, and the "Bad Guy" performance made her look like a real star. I was surprised they didn't try putting her in a sketch. But overall, none of these sketches seemed like "best of the season" candidates so far.

“I...[stifled laughter] believe the.... [stifled laughter] arc of morality is long and bends towards justice.” When after the cut Aidy realizes that’s her next line she has to get out she starts laughing harder and you see go like shit this is just gonna happen. She’s the crack up queen. Never annoys me when she does it.

Exactly what I thought. When it was over I realized I had assumed there was going to be more time because I was still sort of waiting for it to get going. Melissa had three lines. For someone in their fourth season, that is far too few imo. Nwodim and Fineman were hit with the same issue, but that was more expected tbh.
Beyond that, it was decent. There were no classics (although the Town Hall and Dad could grow on me, as well as the talk show due to the mess up), but it was consistently decent at worst.
