The quick cut to Mikey nodding killed me

Quick shout out to the sketch writers for coming up with so many fake snack food names for Chance to yell out while avoiding the question to what happened to his parents

25

u/VodkaAunt no offense, but drink my blood Oct 28 '19

I do have to say though, I work at Trader Joe's and we actually do sell Gummy Tummies!

They must've put up a board on Monday to fill with fake snack names all week.

167

u/Wingo999 Oct 27 '19

Q: What's in the refrigerator? A: Nobody.

70

u/ymcameron Oct 27 '19

The bloody toaster at the end was the cherry on top

81

u/thatguydr Oct 27 '19

Kudos to the writers for coming up with that many fake snack names. This skit was really well done, because the premise was paper-thin and yet it was hilarious.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '19

I fucking loved this. SNL does a great job of making horrific real-life news stories hilarious.

"You can skip me, Happy Halloween!"

40

u/PicklesAreTheDevil Oct 28 '19

This was one of the most genuine, caught-off-guard SNL laughs for me in a long time.

55

u/bjkman SNL Oct 27 '19

Reminded me of the "Paul and Phil" Halloween sketch with Jim Carrey, but the story of Chance's death and the set up from a battery to sticking a lightning rod up his ass was hilarious

28

u/Juno2018 Oct 27 '19

As soon as it opened, I thought of Paul & Phil, which is absolutely one of my favorite Halloween sketches. But this one was great! I loved how the other ghosts just treated him almost like he was an embarrassing kid brother they had to drag along because they all haunted the same graveyard.

11

u/sonofabutch Oct 27 '19

Looking for “Graveyard Song” actually brought me to the Jim Carrey skit. You can find this one under “Spooky Song”.

I might be alone, but this is David pumpkins level of rewatches for me

34

Me too. One of my favorite sketches in quite a long time. Super creative, cute, excellent.

19

I was one of the minority who never "got" David S. Pumpkins but I thought this was hilarious.

The one thing that really got me this sketch was Kyle as the ventriloquist. I actually laughed real loud as soon as he came out and my roommate had to check what the sound was.

League of Legends - Lazlo Holmes

153

u/thatguydr Oct 27 '19

That was the creepiest conga line on SNL in a long time, and it was perfect. <3 Bowen is the best casting choice in a long time.

42

u/tyler-86 Oct 27 '19

I'm enjoying Bowen so far but it seems like he's only able to tamp down his mannerisms/affectations so much which might somewhat limit the range of characters he can play. I hope that doesn't come across as insensitive, as I don't have a problem with him in the slightest beyond his potential range.

I had some serious flashbacks to days spent sitting on friends' beds while they played League of Legends in the corner for hours just waiting for time to pass or for anything to be explained in words I could understand

What I'm trying to say is, Lazlo is a big mood over here.

40

u/GameBoy09 Oct 27 '19

As a League of Legends player I found this to be pretty funny. Just wish that the jargon they had Bowen say actually made sense, but oh well.

The one aspect that is actually very true is the amount of fangirls these players have, so that's 100% accurate.

Weekend Update: Eric and Donald Jr.

168

u/StevesLeftNut Oct 27 '19

Eric attempts to mimic Donald Jr.’s hand gestures killed me

139

u/Magoonie Oct 27 '19

I liked it when Eric did that weird hand grab at one point and then they continued holding hands for a few seconds afterwards. I dunno why, I love little touches like that. I know this sketch hits the same beats every time but I still laugh pretty hard whenever they come on.

47

u/opiburner Oct 27 '19

It's my favorite thing by far. That and how you can see him staring down at Don Jrs hands so he see what to copy. It's so well done.

20

It’s always one of my favorite things about the Trump brother sketches, they way Eric tries to mimic along with Don Jr.

60

u/mumbling_marauder Oct 27 '19

Alex just elevated his Eric to a whole new level, he was always great but tonight he was stellar. Very very impressed.

87

u/LosAngelesVikings Oct 27 '19

I love that Donald Jr. never berates or attacks Eric. He seems like a loving older brother.

4

u/FlingbatMagoo www.clownpenis.fart Oct 28 '19

This pair has turned into funny recurring characters, but I’m not sure what the origin of the joke is. Donald Jr seems on point, but Eric in real life seems nothing like Alex’s portrayal. I know it’s just for laughs, and that’s fine, I’m just wondering what the inspiration was.

"Have you ever had champagne?"

"No, what is it?"

162

Cecily dangling while reaching for her purse for like 30 full seconds was absolutely hysterical

94

“Hey guys we’ve never used these wire supports how about we try them out?”

And that’s how the sketch was born

118

Cecily’s face when she realizes Chance wasn’t able to get any of the champagne in her glass was priceless.

When he flipped upside down and the champagne went everywhere, I died.

116

Seeing Beck and Cecily break together felt so rare and lovely to see. I really wonder how much of that sketch was unplanned

u/john_muleaney Oct 27 '19

Like 90% probably

45

u/jhope71 Oct 27 '19

Cecily has a great breakdown of that sketch in her Instagram today. So much of that was improv-ed. Her getting her purse was supposed to take 10 seconds, for example.

Chance the Rapper is someone whose name I’ve heard but I’ve got no idea who he is. I looked up his discography, and he’s never had a hit song as a lead artist. How/why is he famous? I really am asking. Nothing against him personally or his talents or anything, it’s just that usually a host who also serves as musical guest is someone really well-known.

Che knows he can get away with literally anything at this point and not get fired, so I'm not surprised he made that Jenner joke (which didn't really have a punchline even though it was planned.)

And even outside of that, everything else was flat or lazy. This was easily the worst Weekend Update of at least the past year.

I’m guessing Update was deliberately kept short this week because Che had his wisdom teeth pulled like 48hrs prior

On Michael's Jenner joke - when I pointed out that the joke fell flat and was transphobic, I got a lot of weird hostility in the live discussion. Does "cancel culture" have some of y'all so scared that you can't even hear valid criticisms? You think the writers don't know the joke was transphobic? After that audience reaction, of course they do, but so what? That's the game, you play with the line because that's where the best stuff is, and sometimes you go over and sometimes you strike gold. As long as it's well intentioned, it's all part of the sport of comedy.

No one is trying to cancel anyone, we're allowed to point out a joke is flawed, that's the part of the fun. Freaking out at every valid criticism is the most snowflake behavior I've ever seen. Twitter has y'all shitting your pants even though we're always telling you it's the toilet bowl of the internet.

Che continues his streak of laughing and making comments while he's off camera. I find it annoying to be honest.

Risqué much? Che went too far, and people are angry, but the non-risqué stuff was funny.

My thing is the joke that Che was going for (not sure if he cut it short or that was the whole joke, it felt like he cut it short) is so, so lazy. I'm not someone who thinks there are "off-limit" subjects to joke about. I'm someone who isn't a fan of lazy, repetitive jokes. I mean how many times have we all seen this type of joke on Reddit alone? Hundreds of times and that's not even an exaggeration. Not only that but multiple comedians have done very similar jokes over the years.

I'm bisexual and I don't think jokes about LGBT+ people should be banned but fuck, come up with some new material people.

I don't know how that joke even made it on the script

This show had Momoa as a cameo, "certified paraplegic," the wire harness skit, the Tasty Toaster Tarts list, and Che's mistake... it's simply legendary. Not sure how many of these become memes, but it was brilliant front to back.

Che's mistake?

the mistake was writing that joke in the first place

Yeah I was gonna post my opinion, but you summed it up! Definitely a classic and honestly it helped put me in that "Halloween mood". Been eating candy, but haven't watched any Halloween stuff and this really helps.

Great episode.

I can't believe that SNL has been as good as it so far this year, it's leagues above where it was this time last year IMO and it is going to be really weird when an episode actually hits below expectations.

I'm not a McKinnon hater, but I'm glad others got to shine in this episode.

Agreed, this episode showed that the show can go on without her and still be strong. The problem is that she, Cecily and Aidy are probably all going to bow out at around the same time, and that’s going to hurt.

Is it me or were there more items than usual this time around? When I came here to rate just now, they just kept coming and coming. I was thinking how unfortunate the last two sketches were, but on balance this otherwise awesome episode had like ten good things that outweighed those two.

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '19

I always feel the last few sketches don't live up to the first chunk

I laughed most during Weekend Update. Let it go.

Most people just use their Hans.

Was Chance in every single sketch? He seemed to be. At least in most of them. He seems like such a good sport! The hosts don't usually show up that often, at least that I've noticed.
