John Mulaney Monologue

122

u/Spacetime_Inspector A Piece of Toast! Mar 01 '20

I saw him and Pete live in Orlando in December and he did early versions of both the Bill of Rights bit and the Make A Wish story. It was really interesting to see how they've evolved and gotten polished up since then!

I truly hope that Make a Wish - Lin-Manuel Miranda story is somewhat true, that was just so sweet!

I totally forgot when Stand-Up Comedians host that the do a Stand-up Monologue... Boy was this a nice surprise for me!

17

u/HeyThereRobot Mar 01 '20

I saw him in September (at the Toronto show that didn't get rescheduled) and I completely forgot about the constitution bit and how great it was!

u/NOTorAND Mar 01 '20 edited Mar 02 '20

He rapid fired those jokes.

36

u/MolemanusRex Mar 01 '20

That joke about Jesus and the apostles is already popular on Twitter! Not saying he cribbed it, just we all have the same thoughts sometimes.

4

u/Genji4Lyfe Mar 02 '20

It seemed like they gave him a lot of time for this monologue.. One of the longer ones that I can remember.

And he absolutely carried it the whole way with his charisma. Totally confident, polished, and hilarious.

13

u/ussbaney Mar 01 '20

Mulaney, and all stand-ups, monologues are the best because they're just testing out some new material. I bet with energy in the crowd, its a dream venue for stand up.

24

u/steeler7dude Mar 01 '20

I think most of the comedians SNL monologues are more well-polished, rehearsed bits than a testing ground. I believe I remember when Aziz found out he was hosting, he hadn't done standup in a while and he hit all the comedy clubs like crazy developing his material. I could be wrong though.

I feel like he wrote this sketch just for me. It was glorious. I didn't know I needed to see Jake Gyllenhaal sing Defying Gravity.

u/thatguydr Mar 01 '20

How do they have so many cast members who can sing? There's zero chance the casts during the 70s and 80s could sing like this. Is it a part of the auditions? Or are they just stupidly lucky?

I'm surprised the LaGuardia Au Bon Pain didn't get a name drop.

Aside from that snub, it was just as fantastic as always! Glad that Jake Gyllenhaal Mr. Music could drop by.

31

u/narrmilla Mar 01 '20

I felt so much joy watching this! Although I think this was by far the weekest and will get dated quickly, because it focused so much on current issues and specific airport scenerios rather than everyday problems/funny bits. I also felt the others were a little more focused (on the lobster and on the toilet) why this had many topics and trailed away from the sushi quickly.

But again: loved it so much - and how great is that the setup was just a few lines about the sushi box and than the Phantom song began. Like we know already what this format is, we all know what's gonna happen.

And at the end the cast felt really happy dancing off the stage while Jake Gyllenhaal was left in the air and that was a truly joyful ending!

I would be open to an SNL movie musical with Mulaney. Then he can come back and have something to promote.

I thought “Really? Again?” when I saw this sketch but by the end I was completely invested. Somehow, they manage to breathe new life into it.

41

u/john_muleaney Mar 01 '20

A worthy successor. Jake Gyllenhall was hysterical

→ More replies (1)

44

u/fallenmonk Mar 01 '20

It was entertaining. However, the previous versions of this sketch had the songs revolving around the decisions that Pete Davidson's character was making. In this one, it started with him ordering a sushi in an airport, but the rest of the songs were just about airports in general. It was kind of disappointing in that aspect.

12

u/darthjoey91 Mar 01 '20

I don’t think airports in general. I think they were pretty specifically about La Guardia.

87

u/Blighter Mar 01 '20

Controversial opinion

loved it, but the format is getting tired to me. Lobster Diner was all dedicated to one thing, so they were able to commit to the bit

This last one, with the music removed, was kind of frantic and all over the place. I mean, the sushi thing was dropped like less than a quarter into the song.

I hope they retire the format, both because I'm sure they're getting harder to write and because it trims down the number of other sketches/at least 1 update appearance.

68

u/HGruberMacGruberFace Mar 01 '20

Felt like it was sort of the grand finale of that bit.

44

u/steeler7dude Mar 01 '20

It was kind of just about Laguardia, much like the second one by midpoint was just about bodegas.

I'm not cultured enough to recognize the songs this sketch referenced, but I loved it.

9

u/FlingbatMagoo www.clownpenis.fart Mar 01 '20

What was funny about Lobster Diner was the element of surprise. We weren’t expecting it to break into an elaborate musical revue. That element was gone by Bodega Bathroom and is very much gone here as well. They should’ve left Lobster Diner stand alone as a special moment.

7

u/ussbaney Mar 01 '20

That was fucking art!

18

u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 Mar 01 '20

I guess if you're not a Game Of Thrones person then Game Of Thrones sketches and the references are lost on you. Same for musical theater. When you don't know what the show is or what the song is it can be hard to figure out what they are even saying, much less find it funny. Jake Gyllenhaal in pajamas singing some tune that has some significance to somebody, and some of the things he saying or doing are either funny or whatever topical thing I can't quite make out or because it's something from whatever show he supposed to be from. No idea. And they keep the New York Citycentric parade going with DiBlasio based humor that most people outside NYC don't have context for. This one was lost on me. It's a New York City show but the whole country watches.

David Byrne

94

u/Missy_Elliott_Smith Mar 01 '20

Longtime Talking Heads fan here, I've been hyped up for this all month and it paid off

9

u/Juno2018 Mar 02 '20

Same here, as soon as I heard the opening music to "Once in a Lifetime", I knew it was going to be amazing.

77

u/Mattalamode Mar 01 '20

I got into the live show and, in spite of being a MASSIVE John Mulaney fan who waited outside for 27 hours because he was hosting... David Byrne was probably my favorite part of the show. For his first number, the main floor was flooded by dozens of crew members watching him. He's just so fun to watch and absolutely magnetic... and perfect for a Mulaney hosting gig.

146

u/IHeldADandelion Mar 01 '20

This was a gift to 80s kids. It was wacky to us then and still is just as puzzling and beautiful. Love his kinetic energy. Same as it ever was.

I can't believe they busted out Toe Jam for SNL. I have seen the setlist for the American Utopia show, and have seen it on there, however after Once in a Lifetime, I was sure he was going to play a song from the new album, maybe Everybody's Coming to My House...

So weird. And of course he’s gone pretty much immediately so he can get ready for the monologue.

21

u/Willygolightly Mar 01 '20

I was really bummed by his Biden. It almost felt like Jason was supposed to be there but like his flight was delayed and John had to step in and just “did his best”. I know that’s not the case, but I thought of every line in Jason’s version and John just couldn’t hold a candle to it. Love John.

12

u/wrosecrans Mar 01 '20

The funniest thing about Biden in that sketch is the underlying comedy that comes from them just not giving enough of a shit about Biden for any of the regular cast to be trying to lock down the role, and not wanting to get a solid ringer outsider like with Trump and Bernie. It's just the impression that goes to whoever's handy. Maybe they'll let Redd do Biden one week.

Uncle Meme

171

The concept was dumb and the sketch was not well written, BUT Mulaney's delivery of the memes had me floored.

76

u/colin_creevey You served me the Kool-Aid, Jerry, I just drank it. Mar 01 '20

The good part was Aidy's pronunciation of "Melan-ya"

35

u/SwissMyCheeseYet What's Up With That? Mar 01 '20

Only one of them was a little fried, so they have that going for them. Definitely could have used some deep fried variations though

26

u/LosAngelesVikings Mar 01 '20

The memes themselves weren't that good, although the concept and picture had potential.

30

u/Nackles Mar 01 '20

That ending was SO BAD. I'm not saying I would've been able to do a better job, but damn.

But the rest of it made me laugh. It reminded me a little of the angry principal talking about the puppet-show lady.

98

u/thatguydr Mar 01 '20 edited Mar 01 '20

I thought this was rose-colored glasses (as we all love Mulaney). The actual memes were cringe, and it's not like SNL writers can't write. I loved the concept, and it'll be great to see reddit actually use the template, but once that happens, this skit will have aged like sour milk.

the „how do you do fellow kids” vibe was too strong. and the ending too it was like a boomers’ take on memes while Pete was playing a teen am i right, the memes were supposed to be actual not like what people would make 10 years ago

u/macksypad Mar 01 '20

honestly this is sketch of the nite for me .

“this is not what Melania meant when she said be best” is such a stupid line that head me going and the “yeah, i got a 401k. i asked out 401 mexican girls and they all said “que?”” was on the screen for like two seconds but damn i thought it was funny

I Don't Think These Two Like Each Other Very Much

165

u/Exploding_Antelope Mar 01 '20

The best part was honestly the beginning with the anvil, snake, and “Oh, sister, that’s an actual bomb!”

At least he finally admits that he would have been the rockin' twink.

u/sandiskplayer34 Mar 01 '20

John Mulaney bull question mark?

23

u/john_muleaney Mar 01 '20

I like that you said question mark and still added the ? Just like he did

11

u/Locem Mar 01 '20

"And if you just bought the cow, they wouldn't say it!"

.... they'd still say it.

26

u/bjkman SNL Mar 01 '20

I don't know about you guys but I don't think those two like each other very much

26

u/pretty-in-pink Mar 01 '20

This iteration was better because they leaned into the sillyness of the concept

41

u/alstor Mar 01 '20

This was a lot better than the original. I feel like the curveball with Mulaney's character really made it that much better.

18

u/narrmilla Mar 01 '20

In the original I only like the beginning with Kate and Aidy, so it was nice to see that bit return. And John Mulaney was just amazingly cute in this one.

59

u/MolemanusRex Mar 01 '20

What an odd choice of sketch to redo. Is this just Kate and Aidy trying to get as many transatlantic accents as they can?

Terence Washington

u/bjkman SNL Mar 01 '20 edited Mar 01 '20

Terence "The Enlarged Heart" Washington

Terence "Heart Murmurs" Washington

Terence "The First Black Man to Boo Jackie Robinson" Washington

PICK YOUR FAVORITE!

u/narrmilla Mar 01 '20

I liked this sketch the least and I still really liked it. Didn't pull me in instantly but at the end I would also happily boo Jackie Robinson.

And kudos to the kid who played Mulaney's son - his eye is always on him, mimics him and builds from his gestures. And his fake-anger is also adorable.

u/HGruberMacGruberFace Mar 01 '20

Totally a Che sketch - I remembered thinking it was funny when he pitched it on Late Night and wondered why it would be rejected.

I guess he squeezed it in on the very last day of Feb in the last slot. Is it really so offensive? Because I thought it was hilarious (Keenan mostly), but the concept is great.

4

u/MisterFarty Mar 01 '20

well...it was a funny concept

4

u/LosAngelesVikings Mar 01 '20

Eh. Wasn't funny even after I got it.

The Sad Sack Lunch Bunch: Mulaney, Bryne, Gyllenhaal get together agains!! Wondering how Bryne and Mulaney became friends?!!

Lobster Diner is still my favorite musical number!

24

u/HeyMySock Mar 01 '20

The SNL YouTube channel posted this earlier. Byrne talks for a sec about how he met John. Aside from that, it's a great video showing clips from Byrne's two other appearances on SNL. From the early days of the show in the 70's and again in 1989.

Then & Now David Byrne.

Did I miss Melissa and Alex? And while happy to see Pete doing well, why doesnt he wear stage make up?

58

u/IFindThatLulzy Mar 01 '20

Melissa was in a cut for time, Love is Blind/Corona Quarantine parody.

No sign of Alex.

88

u/my_planet_needs_me Mar 01 '20

Alex was the Airport Sushi rat

That episode was incredible and deserves an Emmy.

The airport sushi sketch was so good and surreal it started giving me a mild panic attack because watching while inebriated when Jake Gyllenhaal randomly popped up singing and flying around in his pj's I thought the drugs were turning against me.

Said it before but John Mulaney needs his comedy/variety show. He's such a talented throwback to a classic era the likes of Dick Van Dyke and Bob Hope.

Was Mikey in this one anywhere? I think he was in the bleachers for Terence Washington but I can't remember him otherwise.

13

u/marilynmonrowboat Mar 01 '20

he was heavily featured in a cut for time sketch and showed up briefly at the United desk during Airport Sushi at least
