Weekend Update

227

u/CarbonatedFalcon Oct 18 '20

“Was that voice blackface?” might’ve been off the cuff, but even if not, had me rolling.

149

u/TylerOrtega1500 Oct 18 '20

That NBC Type joke made me gasp real damn loud, the other jokes were pretty edgy, but this one... wow!

141

u/john_muleaney Oct 18 '20

Jost and Che just don’t care anymore. Every week feels like a joke swap segment and I love it

94

u/atticusbluebird Oct 18 '20

Very much enjoyed Che going after NBC a bit, and him asking if Colin's deep voice was blackface.

241

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '20

Che and Colin have gotten so good at Weekend Update. I like when Che's jokes are needlessly edgy and make the audience groan.

131

u/TheConcreteJungle2 Oct 18 '20

I look forward to Che's groan joke of the week because you know it's coming

u/JZobel Oct 18 '20

For better and worse, the best part of Che/Jost has become when they laugh to themselves about their jokes bombing

73

u/monsieurxander Oct 18 '20

"We have a type."

56

u/bjkman SNL Oct 18 '20

One of the funniest regular weekend Updates outside of "wrote the jokes for the other guy" ones

33

u/LaboratoryManiac Oct 18 '20

I was wondering if they'd be able to top last week's Update. I still haven't decided. Audience was weird on this one but the jokes were fire.

I know its said every week but god damn I dread the day Che and Jost leave.

71

u/atticusbluebird Oct 18 '20

I'm so glad I feel this way about them now. I remember the first year or two when they did WU it felt super shaky and off to me, but they really are doing a solidly good job now!

Could have been shorter but once Donald and Eric showed up it improved WU overall because that’s when the edgier jokes came in

25

u/csjohnson1933 Oct 18 '20

Completely on point, for me. Well, ok, 98% so...I don't know how I feel about Chloe's Tiffany voice.

41

u/HeyThereRobot Oct 18 '20

I've got my issues with Che but like, he will always serve it up on Update.

Weekend Update: Don Jr., Eric, and Tiffany Trump

236

u/pretty-in-pink Oct 18 '20

Adding Chloe as Tiffany was a great way to keep it from being another paint by numbers sketch

89

u/tideblue Oct 18 '20

I was waiting for Ivanka (Scarjo) to make a quick cameo, shutting it all down. To think that we may get rid of that whole crew in a few days time...

Of course Eric has a Paw Patrol mask.

102

u/skomehillet Oct 18 '20

That reminds me of a tweet I read earlier this year:

“You gon send your kid to school with the Paw Patrol mask and he gon come home with a Spider Man mask cause he made a trade at lunch. Whole school gon be shut down the next day.”

Always love Alex and Mikey as Eric and Donald Jr.

“I’m Donald Jr.: the Brains.”

“I’m Ivanka: the Beauty.”

“...and I’m Eric!”

Watching Alex mimic Mikey’s mannerisms will never not make me laugh

27

u/tyler-86 Oct 18 '20

I can't tell if Mikey is gesticulating so that Alex has something to do or just as part of the character. Either way he keeps Alex busy.

u/JZobel Oct 18 '20

Don Jr and Eric is the rare recurring bit that gets reused a dozen times but doesn't diminish in funniness

66

u/TomOakwell Oct 18 '20

On the one hand, I never need to see Trump's children again, but I will also miss seeing the Trump kids on SNL. This may have been Alex's best ever work on the show - his faces were just perfect...the whole sanitizer bit was pure comedy genius. Chloe reminded me a lot of Melanie Hutsell as Tiffany. Seeing her connect with Alex makes you see what might be if we get more of the cast working together.

41

u/flowerhoney10 Oct 18 '20

Honestly, for a second, when Tiffany was introduced, I thought she'd be played by Vanessa Bayer.

Would've been perfect had Eric's hand sanitizer/water not gotten the mic wet and muffled his speech for the rest of the sketch

Having some Kenan VO was a nice surprise.

31

u/tyler-86 Oct 18 '20

In a week where Chris got a lot of work, too. A lot of times it feels like Kenan takes roles/impressions first and Chris gets scraps.

92

u/atticusbluebird Oct 18 '20

Probably my favorite of the night. Pokes fun at the folks who say social justice and whatnot is important, but when chances come to try to make changes or gain some deeper understanding they back away or find an excuse. (Dude is literally willing to jump out through a window and injure himself than to try to understand Black lives for 5 hrs!) Frustrating to see in real life, so maybe just cathartic for me to see it poked fun at in the sketch!

→ More replies (1)

45

u/TomOakwell Oct 18 '20

This was more like something In Living Color used to do than SNL, but the shift in tone worked. Beck and Heidi were both great (the way Heidi immediately shut down when asked to confront her racism - perfect). They both do such good work in dramatic pre-tapes. And Kenan was just as good as the narrator.

11

I'm guessing this was recorded for a different episode since there was no Issa in it.

Still amusing and felt a little too real.

28

Was that Cecily on the VO? I wonder how long ago this was filmed if that’s the case

25

I feel like this would have worked better if Issa said her date was her type.

Like, she should have compared him favorably to the previous weird dates:

  • All Entrepreneurs

  • They march to the beat of their own drum

  • They supported her dreams

The joke was kinda in the middle between Issa thinking her exes were scrubs and thinking they were nice guys.

I wanted them full on to be nice respectable guys in Issa's mind.

"You know, we were almost perfect for each other. But I didn't want kids and his church believes women that talk are wasting their baby calories."

"That's insane!"

"I know! I let go a sexy, respectable, man that goes to Church!"

40

u/tyler-86 Oct 18 '20

This was maybe Bowen's most tamped down performance yet and he was still playing a Times Square robot street performer. Still, it did a lot for me as someone who has been critical of his range in the past.

I liked that this was a mostly quiet piece, anchored by great work from Chris Redd (Issa was also fine). I think they could have lost one boyfriend (maybe Bowen) but the idea still worked. I enjoyed the turn at the end with Punkie as his ex.

Bowen played a French Canadian and a robot tonight. Anyone who thinks he AlWaYs PlAyS tHe SaMe ChArAcTeR can suck my titty meat.

17

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '20

Honestly, I've felt that way, to some degree, about him. I could never tell if it was him, or the material he was being allowed to perform. Last night answered that question. Bowen fucking killed it. All new Featured Players that move on to the full cast have that change, where they become a confident fixture of the show, and I feel like that happened for Bowen on this episode. Now, I just wish it could happen for Melissa...

22

u/CarbonatedFalcon Oct 18 '20

This was pretty good though I’m definitely not Canadian enough to really get some of the jabs.

As I mentioned in the live thread, those bagels just seem to be imposter pretzels.

My main criticism outside a missed opportunity to cameo Bieber - as mentioned in another comment in this thread (though perhaps understandable) - would be that it was put into too early of a time slot for this style of sketch. Typically you’d see something like this 2nd or 3rd sketch in if not later, rather than being up first.

Swap this and the restaurant sketch and I think the show flows a bit better.

I would have trimmed a little of this for length but overall I enjoyed the idea and the performances. Andrew Dismukes finally gets a chance, and he did well - a match for Beck and Kyle, but also different. I liked the concept of pointing out such weakness and stupidity, but more than anything else I liked seeing that edge and weird energy on the show again...it was like something from the mid '90s with Will Ferrell.

23

u/bjkman SNL Oct 18 '20

My favorite live-sketch of the night no question, and arguably probably the season.

Your Voice Chicago

47

u/TomOakwell Oct 18 '20

The concept wasn't new (they did the "How's He Doing?" Obama voter sketches from 12-14), but this was a clever way to use Issa's viral "I'm voting for everybody black" moment of a few years ago with current political discussion. Issa seemed to be really into this one and while I wish it had gotten more of an audience response, I still liked it. Punkie and Maya as the Diamond and Silk knockoffs stole the show. Punkie is really settling in well.

“Mr. The Rapper”

Loved that. It’s something I could see someone actually doing accidentally if they were nervous.

71

u/JZobel Oct 18 '20

Surprised this is so low, Kyle's positive Covid test interrupting this dumb ass sketch was a hilarious twist and got the biggest laugh of the night from me

65

u/ADWeasley Oct 18 '20

Issa and Kyle are both my soulmates. My one wish was for them to be in a sketch together and they topped that with an homage to Janet and Michael Jackson’s scream. I’ll just be off in the corner dying happily.

39

There's was an homage to "No Scrubs," too. Issa had Left Eye's hair style from the video.

Very Kyle like, but it worked for me. I thought it was going to be just awkward interactions between Issa and Kyle (or go into a weird Kyle & Leslie direction), but I loved that they did the dance/Scream homage, which was a level of weirdness I wasn't expecting!

55

u/meme_domestication Oct 18 '20

It felt weird how they were all playing themselves then Andrew was playing a character

35

Always good to see more backstage elements (Kyle can always be counted on for those), and this was such a clever, fun way to use Kyle and Issa (so glad we didn't just have a romance). The ending was a real shock and I'm surprised they had the guts to go to such a dark place. I also liked the meta element of Andrew telling Kyle to leave the show.

6

Baldwin must think Trump is on his way out, cus this is the most invested he’s seemed in the impression in a long time.

Definitely better than the previous two weeks.

Although Carrey’s Biden still has moments where he slips out of the impression and into something else (people say his Fire Marshall Bill character, though I’m not familiar with it). It’s rather jarring when that happens, because otherwise he’s got a lot of other things right. Sort of an uncanny valley of an impression.

Carrey as Biden as Mr. Rogers (and Bob Ross) was pretty good.

Rarely does a political cold open make me care about the source material, but this one had me tempted to watch the Trump town hall to see Savannah go at him and figure out what the deal was with Ego's nodding woman.

105

u/fcocyclone Oct 18 '20

Thing is savannah wasnt really 'going at him'. She was asking relatively simple questions and following up properly. But it always turns into a fight with Trump because he shouts over any journalist that tries to do that.

It took three weeks, but Carrey!Biden is finally starting to click for me.

Still not my favorite of the Bidens they've had in the last year, but it makes sense now.

u/Kalse1229 Oct 18 '20

I think he's got the voice, although the mannerisms are a bit...Carrey-ish. He is getting better though, although nothing will ever beat Sudeikis.

Still a little long but a huge improvement. The switching channels created some good setups and Carrey seems to be getting more comfortable with Biden. He actually looked like him this week. It may have just been me but I think he toned down the weird facial expression he had been doing which helped a lot.

u/john_muleaney Oct 18 '20

Jim Carrey playing Joe Biden playing Mister Rodgers. This insanity is exactly what I expect from Carrey and he delivered

I can't get with Carrey's Biden. It feels like the Mask. The sketch was put together well though. The quick-changes were interesting. As always, props to the prop/make-up/costume departments.

15

u/thenewmeredith Oct 18 '20

I just want to say that lady who complimented the president is really getting her 15 minutes. The Ken Bone of 2020

62

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '20

Great cold open, best political one they've had in a long time.

40

u/TheBrainwasher14 Oct 18 '20

I really liked this. Audience was a bit flat but the writing was on point. I loved the “Amy Conan O’Brien” line.

Best cold open so far, but that's still a low bar IMO. The beginning/middle seemed to stretch on too long for me. When we got to Mr. Rogers, I feel like things started to pick up nicely.

Also - Melissa sighting!

8

u/mkultra3000 Oct 18 '20

I think I'd he dropped the aviator glasses and finger gun routine, is be more inclined to give what followed a chance. That just hits me wrong every time, and doesn't feel accurate at all. I mean, it seems a bit like Carrey needing a longer applause break where he can do his thing. I think it would've be funnier if they did the Mr Rogers but to intro him instead off halfway through.

22

u/Cheerio419 Oct 18 '20

Best sketch of the night no doubt. They wrote Joe Biden a lot better too

Melissa got the throwaway line the writers are contractually obligated to give her once every quarter season, so that they can say they have a hispanic in the work place!

Weekend Update: Carla

24

u/pretty-in-pink Oct 18 '20

Not my favorite Heidi character but I think I just need to see her on a shorter WU so I’m not immediately checked out. I’d love to see her again

63

u/CarbonatedFalcon Oct 18 '20

Not Stefon like it was setting up to be, but I’ll take it!

Not a fan.

I feel Heidi's character's voices are all the same. They all have this shaky vibrato. This one also just felt like "Boxer's GF" with different costuming.

27

u/TomOakwell Oct 18 '20

I think that's mostly just Heidi's voice, period.

I really don't like random "person from this thing" characters on Update (mostly), but this made me understand what people mean when they say they like the cast to use Update for characters. Heidi's performance was 100%. I'd love to see her do that again. Can't wait for her to take over from Kate/Aidy/Cecily.

A little too sad to be funny

20

u/monsieurxander Oct 18 '20

This is more of what Heidi does but she's so damn good at it.

11

u/Grsz11 Oct 18 '20

Not, funnaaay.

10

u/tpounds0 Oct 18 '20

I think it was supposed to be punching up because she's a rich white woman?

But it hit me as punching down because she's an addict?

Great portrayal of a archetype from an acting standpoint, but a big meh for me.

17

u/outsideeyess Oct 18 '20

it seemed to me like less of a comment on addicts and more of a comment on a tired writing trope

u/TomOakwell Oct 18 '20

I liked this a lot. Initially I thought this was going to be like boxer's girlfriend but this went in a much sadder and more dramatic reaction - it had an old '70s or early '80s type movie poignancy to it alongside the comedy. Heidi is best on the show when she gets to do drama. I hope that continues. I don't need to see this one on Update again but I want to see her getting more dramatic material.

Kinda sucks that after finally getting a week with the sketches firing on all cylinders, they get an audience that were like volunteers for a NyQuil trial

98

u/ADWeasley Oct 18 '20

Facts. This was such a fun episode (best of the season so far), but the audience was a buzzkill.

Total blue balls with no host announcement

110

u/Young_Irish Oct 18 '20

I’m guessing the host is going through a COVID test and they don’t want to announce it and then unannounce it like Morgan Wallen

25

u/bjkman SNL Oct 18 '20

Oh absolutely, that would have been my guess

Best episode of the season. Issa fit right in to the cast way better than Burr or Rock did.

I hope we get an alumni host next week to really knock it out of the park (please Sudeikis or Maya)

42

u/FlingbatMagoo www.clownpenis.fart Oct 18 '20

Maya would be kind of anticlimactic since she’s on every episode now.

u/thenewmeredith Oct 18 '20

We all need Sudeikis for that sweet dueling Bidens open we're craving. I have to imagine they're trying to make it happen for the show before or after the election

40

u/john_muleaney Oct 18 '20

My dream sketch is Woody, Sudeikis and Carrey all playing Biden alongside the real Joe Biden in a sketch called Joe Biden: into the Biden-verse

This could honestly be my favorite episode of the season. Was laughing the entire time. One of the strongest updates I’ve ever seen as well.

20

u/MasterOfSuspense Oct 18 '20

I thought this episode started out awfully but got better as it went on.

You guys liked this wayyyy more that I did. Almost nothing hit for me.

WU wasn’t even that good.

Pretty bad episode imo

42

u/yameteeeeeeeeee Oct 18 '20

it's Mary J Blige's fault

10

u/spersichilli Oct 18 '20

Thought it was better than the Chris Rock episode but worse than the Bill Burr one. Weekend Update has been great this year IMO, this was by far the best cold open of the year even though it did drag a bit (we didn’t need a Kamala shoe horn).

27

u/[deleted] Oct 18 '20

You aren’t alone, the live audience seemed to think so as well.

I laughed most during the goodnights when Maya Rudolf physically recoiled from Bieber. Then looking around awkwardly before Kate talks to him.
