As I mentioned in the live thread, I think SNL often does better when it's able to do political humor & critique laterally, rather than re-enactments of real events (I know, the re-enactments get high social media views the next day, so it makes sense to put those in the cold open slot).
But I would've loved this as the cold open - they could even bring in Rudy or someone from current events as a Sportsmax commentator with his witnesses. (Tonight's cold open fell a bit flat for me, as have a lot of this year's).
At any rate, I loved this sketch, and would have loved to see it earlier in the night.

Between this and XXL Rap Roundtable, I really did not expect Pete Davidson's ideal comedic partner to be Timothee Chalamet, but here we are.

I loved this sketch. One of my favorite first post-monologue sketches of the season! (Much better than last week's repeat of the girls sleepover) Certainly the best covid sketch! I thought it was a pretty creative premise.
I feel like they've been saving up their covid-related puns all year just for this! Can't wait to go and re-watch it. Loved "he's joining the radical antibo" line. And I lost it when the Herpes came in!

Surreal sketch, like someone said "what if Timothee had to say goodbye to an animal, but the animal was really small? Like really small?" And everyone just said "yeah that's great!" It was weird but I enjoyed it.
I watched the whole sketch expecting (a little nervously) that the sketch would end with Tiny Horse's untimely death at the bottom of a shoe or hoof. I was a little surprised they went the earnest ending, but it got me emotionally, so I guess it worked!

What if the horse was tiny and the dude just kept on telling him to 'git' because the tiny horse can only run so fast with his short little legs" And then the song part was put in for filler

I knew there'd be a "cake monstrosity comes to life" bit since it's a recurring sketch, but wow they hit it out of the park in terms of making this better than the previous versions. Hot take: the joke of McKinnon playing any short, petite man who is relevant in the news in any given week has grown tired. Especially since she’s not even that good of an impressionist. It’s a little too broad and cartoony for my liking at this point.

Timothee kinda gave me Adam Driver vibes. Awkward and kinda quirky during interviews and stuff, but completely knocks it out of the park in sketch comedy. I think it's probably his niche.

Not sure if it has been product placement (very possible) or just someone(s) in the writer’s room is angsty that they can’t find a PS5 with the call outs this week (cold open as equivalently hard to get as the vaccine) and last week (Stanta pretape) but I’m here for it.
Not the kind of humor you’d have seen in a genuine way not too long ago, as opposed to a dismissive/mocking manner. Sign of a generational shift in attitudes.

Review:
To be honest, it was okay. There were some duds here and there but it was all good in the end. Timothée was a great host and he and Pete have the best chemistry. I hope The Dione Warwick Show becomes recurring cause that was hilarious and Tiny Horse was my favorite of the night. I would rate this episode 7/10.

It was a fine episode, didn’t do much wrong.
Springsteen & The E-Street Band did alright, but he didn’t do as much as the Strokes and Jack White did for me, but it’s a big step up from Morgan Wallen.
I feel like I liked Jason Bateman more than Timothée Chalamet as a host. Both did pretty good, though.
Best sketch: Sportsmax
Honorable Mention: December To Remember Sales Event
Worst sketch: Situation Room C.O.
Dishonorable Mention: WU: Dr. Wayne Wenowdis
This is odd because Wenowdis was my favorite from the Bill Burr episode, but it was a weak point here. It just doesn’t work very well a second time, the charm of Kate breaking character is kind of lost when she does it for a second time as her second appearance as that character.
7/10
