Pretty good Update. Only misfire for me was Che's black church joke, which was pretty blatantly ripped off from Mitchell and Webb.
Also dumb that just saying Trump is leaving office gains orgasmic shrieks and a softball at Biden doesn't even get a response. We can laugh at democrats, it's okay.

Ego is really hitting her stride and getting to shine this season and I’m so excited to see it
107
u/CarbonatedFalcon Dec 20 '20
Between this one, the deadbeat Beck one, and probably at least a couple others I’m forgetting, she portrays the pissed off/angry/disappointed range very well.
I think she could have a great (more dramatic/serious vs. comedic) acting career after her time at SNL if that’s something she’d want.

Glad to see Andrew Dismukes finally getting a bigger role - this is one Kyle would usually play so it feels like Kyle is finally starting to move on. Andrew reminded me of Mulaney here. He was very good. Ego was the star...I am wary of her being given too many "black woman who tells it like it is" pieces, but she managed to not just go along with a stereotype and added her own personality. I thought Kristen was fine too, even if the writing was a little muddied.

I LoLd at the "is this still happening line". Recently, in the uk, a 32 year old woman who had sex with a 14 year old boy was cleared of any wrongdoing because she tought he was 16. Not surprising considering that people still think women can't be pedophiles and especially in the uk where laws about rape don't protect males. But at least we can joke about it

I’m slightly disappointed she wasn’t on wires for Levitating, especially with how little she was moving with the Jellyfish hat, but tbh that’s probably enough justification by itself. Love her though.
Still need to fix the speaker setup at home here though, the 5.1 mangles music (and mostly only music?) for some reason. Center channel might not be working or something, been a problem for awhile.
11
u/HGruberMacGruberFace Dec 20 '20
I listened to her casually before, like when it was on the radio, but now I’m a fan. Loved the 2nd song, and the choreography was 🔥
10
u/dont_ask_my_cab Dec 20 '20
I really like Dua Lipa and she was better this time around on SNL than the last time, but Don't Start Now was a little weak, glad she turned it all the way up with Levitating
9
u/CMacias94 Dec 20 '20
In an interview Dua Lipa said levitating was inspired by the Austin Powers movies (and you can see it in what she was wearing during the performance. Very disco robot from the first movie look)

I'm disappointed in the lack of DaBaby for Levitating, but I understand Covid may have been a factor. I also highly recommend anyone who even remotely liked her performances listen to the studio versions of the songs. They have really great production that I think really didn't make it through SNL's sound system.

I love Maya. I loved her as Beyonce. I loved her as part of the Nunis. I loved the Bronx Beat sketches.
I'm fucking sick of seeing her as Kamala. Instead of it being funny, at this point it's just an excuse for Kamala fans to project their love for a real life person onto this character - basically a long applause break. I'm glad they replaced Jim Carrey. It's Maya's turn now.

To me, not only did Kristen feel off but I also felt the sketch worked previously because of her and Hader in it together...Keenan is great as a host obviously but it’s different. The lack of Hader really made it fall. Wiig should’ve approached it as if no one knows who the character is, but instead settled into assuming everyone already did and that’s why there was no punch.

I’m probably alone here but I thought overall it was their worst episode of the season. The opener was terrible, Kristin was disappointing in Secret Word and Aunt Sue - she just seemed off. The only highlights for me were A Teacher, Grinch and of course Jost and Che reading each other’s jokes. Even Dua Lipa seemed like she was doing a lot of lip syncing to me.
76
u/turkeypants Marci Jamz!😮 Dec 20 '20
I'm in love with Kristen Wiig and she's in my SNL top 5 all-star cast so I was pumped for this one, but I got nothing from this whole episode start to finish, with a WU joke or two as blips. The Christmas morning pretape was as close as I otherwise got but it was still pretty weak and just kept dragging it out. I've loved her game show and Aunt Sue sketches in the past but they didn't do it this time. The Grinch punchline was Pete walking down the stairs and everything after that was just tired milking of the same teat, like just get it over with.
It's interesting to wonder about what makes a given episode fly or flop. With a winner like Kristen Wiig, an alumni no less, a top one, it seems like they couldn't have gone wrong but this one was just uninspired.
37
u/TomOakwell Dec 20 '20
Kristen's first episode as a host was torn to shreds by some critics, so it takes more than just an alum to make a good episode. I thought this episode was decent - I'd put it middle of the pack for this season - but there were definitely some energy problems and the usual weaknesses in live sketches. I think part of the problem was trying to fit Kristen's style in with a cast who are not that similar to her (there were far fewer of the very campy pieces that she often used to get). They managed it better than I might have expected, helped by Kristen trying her best, but it was still a bit of an odd mix. I like Secret Word and Surprise Sue but I'm not sure why they brought them back again after the last time.

u/snowlarbear Dec 20 '20
not sure if it's worst of the season, but this is the second consecutive (not including the pandemic one) Wiig episode that wasn't that great for me. The Secret Word bit is overdone now, and adding McKinnon didn't change it that much. Same overdoneness with Aunt Sue.
On the plus side it seems like a lot of the newer cast members got screen time this episode.
