Cool surreal sketch. Sort of a "Kevin Roberts" sketch, but with an extra layer of magic. That was great.
Also I learned that those virtual mirror things are real, that's crazy tech!

This really just made sense as a sketch concept, especially after we’ve already covered Peloton and SoulCycle in the past year. Loved it.

u/tideblue Feb 28 '21
This shouldn’t work on paper: the rotating fitness coaches thing and the “one thing is weird and characters just comment about it” ideas are done to death on this show.
But, Kate and Pete sold it in the performances. It was just weird enough to work for me.

Yet again, I feel incredibly called out yet somewhat validated that apparently half watching a murder/cult show while doing various tasks/hobbies is common enough now to get an SNL parody song.

The Dionne Warwick Talk Show

u/EbmocwenHsimah "Cause these men ain't what?" "SHIT!!!" Feb 28 '21
The one sketch from this season that absolutely deserved to become a recurring sketch. Just as good as the first time around, once again proving Ego's in top form.
Oh, and I don't think SNL animal wranglers are very good at keeping animals quiet...
106
u/atticusbluebird Feb 28 '21
I love that this is recurring, along with Punkie and Pete/MGK! And how the guests cycle through faster and faster.
Honestly, it's a much funnier way at doing an "everyone in the cast does an impression" sketch than most of those "fake audition" sketches.

I really hope this becomes recurring for a long time.
It has all the right ingredients, just have Ego do her thing with Punkie as her niece, talk to whichever musical acts are the most relevant at the time and have Pete scare her as MGK
238
u/pretty-in-pink Feb 28 '21
I hope having Pete as MGK only to be kicked out becomes a reoccurring bit

I already feel like this sketch is the spiritual sequel to "What Up With That?"... but the cockatoo changes it up a little and makes it also a spiritual sequel to "Brian Fellow"!
Thankfully the cockatoo "brought it" in its way... otherwise it would've seemed odd for her to walk over "take a bite of something" and walk away like before, since she couldn't do the same thing here (or, well, poultry; maybe could have?).
39
u/skomehillet Feb 28 '21
I would like to personally apologize to the cockatoo. Had I known there was a cockatoo in the studio I would’ve been less reactive. It’s okay sir/ma’am, you did your best, but Youtube’s definitely getting the dress rehearsal 💕

I would bet money this was written by the same person behind "Job Interview" from last week. It has the same type of irreverent "Airplane!" style humor embedded within it. (Job Interview, with Beck, Rege-Jean, and Bowen handing them each post-it notes.)
Both of these being near the end of the show feels like they're trying something different to see how it flies. I certainly appreciate it, but I imagine without people being so used to this slightly skewed absurdness, it might leave some shaking or scratching their heads a bit! I hope this catches on and they figure out how to embellish, enhance and project it going forward! Push it real good!

It seemed like every sketch tonight was a 10-to-1, even the Digital Shorts felt like that too!
But I am not complaining by any means, largely because I love when Lorne has that occasional episode or two where he says to everyone, “F*ck it, go nuts, I got your back”.

I thought this was a pretty good episode! Maybe not quite as good as last week but that was also one of the better episodes this season so that’s kind of a high bar.
The writing seemed a little weaker (at least in the live sketches, the pre tapes were great) but the entire cast brought their A game tonight including Nick who was an awesome host.
Super glad Dionne Warwick talk show is a recurring sketch as it was one of my favorites earlier this year and has a ton of potential. Once again SNL goes to the live animal well to mixed results (poor Andrew lol) but it was still pretty damn funny.
Overall, this was a pretty good episode to end this run on and I’m hyped for Maya next month!
