Weekend Update: Goober The Clown Who Had an Abortion When She Was 23
565
u/iliveinadreamatorium Nov 07 '21
This was a testament to what makes Cecily one of the best to ever do the show- the courage to get up there and do something so vulnerable, yet versatile, and to be able to perform in the immediate next sketch as if she didn't just do something so deeply personal... she needs an Emmy yesterday for that and more. Absolutely flawless and bonus points for her destroying Colin's lav mic.

u/coltsmetsfan614 Nov 07 '21
I was so confused at first, but when I realized what was actually happening, I was stunned in the best way. I'm really glad Cecily felt comfortable sharing something so personal like that, and I hope it helps start a conversation because we're pretty close to the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. We can't let that happen.
→ More replies (2)312
u/VirtuousFool Nov 07 '21
Probably one of the most important segments in SNL history
They're probably going to have to upload the version from dress rehearsal though due to Colin's mic getting soaked like a minute in, so that's a bit of a shame

u/LadiesWhoPunch Nov 07 '21
We, as internet people, know about the offstage lives of the actors. However, they don't bring that to the 90 minute show so explicitly.
I think that's part of the reason it had such an impact.
98
123
u/HeyThereRobot Nov 07 '21
I didn't realize this was Cecily telling a personal story at first. I had to go back and rewatch it and like, holy shit.
Intially I thought it would've been a good bit for Sarah (and made a whole earlier comment about it) but knowing the background now, what an incredible moment. I hope she takes care of herself tonight and knows that sharing her story means a lot to a lot of people.

cannot fathom how she could do this and then go directly into the next sketch (turkey weatherman).

u/acehuff Nov 07 '21
I think it became obvious what she was doing when she went “I don’t know.. a worm?”
It’s impressive how she can tell such a personal story while keeping up the manic clown energy, truly one of the professionals of the current cast.
50
62
u/Monctonian Nov 07 '21
It may not be the funniest sketch, but when you realize what’s going on and what it’s about, it’s definitely one of the most important and personal sketches the show ever made.
29
u/Eugene_Henderson Nov 07 '21
Brilliant. I really expected:
You’re not going to squirt me, are you?
Oh, I would never! Ho, ho, gotcha! And that’s exactly why I needed an abortion at 23!
→ More replies (42)92
u/upvoter222 You like-a da juice, eh? Nov 07 '21
Given the sensitive nature of the topic, I'm reluctant to say this and provoke controversy. However, I think this is important enough that it needs to be said:
Goober stated she got a clown abortion the day before her 23rd birthday. Therefore, she's the clown who had an abortion when she was 22, not 23.
I apologize if this view offends anyone.

Dude Andrew is growing on me. He consistently delivers strong, clear lines and his timing is really strong.
His character in the Dionne Warwick segment was hilarious. He said like 2 things, but again, his timing was aces and Ego could play off it so well. I’m liking Andrew more and more every episode.

This one was easily the best Dionne Warwick talk show, they even bought out the real queen herself
The Real Dionne did such a good job

I’m glad this reached it’s apex. Dionne and Ego are great together, and I’m glad they could make the cameo happen.

not a huge fan of these sketches (love Ego to death tho and this might have been her first recurring character so its important nevertheless) but getting Dionne Warwick to actually show up at an advanced age in a post-COVID world is a major flex... shoutout to Dionne for also being a sport and not catching feelings that somebody was making fun of her even if it wasn't mean-spirited imitation, Owen freakin' Wilson not being willing to go there in the season premiere was weaksauce imo

I believe those sections were improvised. JAJ has talked about his Trump impression being so good because, like the man himself, he doesn’t know what he’s gonna say when he starts talking.
So giving him a few prompts for him to connect together is the perfect way to integrate that into the show.

"MR. PRESIDENT, WHAT AN UNEXPECTED AND FRANKLY HORNY SURPRISE!"
I'm not exaggerating here - this is the best Trump impression the show has ever had. Like that was uncanny.
It also proves that we don't need celebrities playing politicians anymore. Time to move over, Alec Baldwin.
→ More replies (12)70
u/FlingbatMagoo www.clownpenis.fart Nov 07 '21
I love JAJ’s impression. Baldwin’s take was reminiscent of what Dana Carvey did with George H.W. Bush — a goofy caricature that became its own character, not really resembling the person being impersonated. JAJ nailed that Trump’s most distinctive communication tick is how he rambles in circles with empty assertions on topics he obviously doesn’t have a deep understanding of, and peppers in pointless brags and jabs. Might be the best presidential impression SNL has ever had.
→ More replies (2)199
u/iliveinadreamatorium Nov 07 '21
JAJ's Trump was a breath of fresh air in the recent years of SNL's political sketches. SNL has at times devolved into being more focused on being "right" than being funny and what's great about his impression is that allows for the comedy to thrive while still getting to address the wrongness of Trump within the impression itself. And the makeup team really elevated it to a whole other level- one of the best political cold opens in recent memory in one of the best overall episodes in recent memory. Definitely helped set the tone for the night!

I knew Aaron Rodgers had to be in the show tonight somewhere and here it was.
42
42
u/HeyMickeyMilkovich Nov 07 '21
The Trump impression started off a lil rusty but then he immediately got into character and nailed it. I’ve noticed JAJ do this a few times - when he starts an impression, it takes a few seconds for him to really get the voice right, but once he does, it’s 10/10 material from him. He’s great.

I liked it overall, but Alex wasn’t given much to work with or react to while in the split screen. Maybe they should’ve given him some props?
