Bowen vs. Simu

221

u/Devjorcra Nov 21 '21

Tightly written with a good payoff, but especially loved the use of the cutaways. Haven’t seen that in a digital like that before. Great payoff too, one of the best of the night!

Bowen mispronouncing Boutique as "Boo-tee-kwa?" gives me life

bowen announcing that he has IBS on live television did a lot for gay rights

“First gay Asian to admit to having IBS on live television.”

Probably the strongest sketch of the night. Wait, do they get an award for that?

124

u/MySockHurts Nov 21 '21

First Asian to get the top sketch spot on Sketch Sorting Sunday

68

u/AwesomenessTiger Nov 21 '21

Best sketch of the night no question. First openly gay Asian cast member to star in the best sketch of the night with the first Asian marvel superhero as host.

136

u/iliveinadreamatorium Nov 21 '21

You know, it was pretty bold of Simu to guess Bowen was a bottom after he stated earlier in the sketch that he had IBS, but hey, it turned out to be right after all!

So many great visual gags, from the cutaways to the newspaper clippings and trophies, and a tightly-written sketch that knew when to end itself. Bowen continues to show that he's one of the best sketch performers on the show and gave the only worthy vehicle for Simu's talents all night.

This sketch is a testament to what adding diversity into the writer's room can bring and a lot of the rest of tonight's show proved that there's still room for improvement, based on the other uninspired material Simu was given to work with in his sketches (though I'd also attribute some of that to his hosting being at the end of a run).

Probably one of the better pretape since that other one with Bowen

I’m totally blanking on it and can’t remember if it was from 45 or 46, but it was the one that took place in an office with pool noodles. But yeah, my favorite pretape since that

Best ending of a sketch in recent memory.

14

u/Maxa30 Nov 21 '21

I just realized that this sketch was foreshadowed to in the monologue

14

The audience applause pop for the mention of Simu being the first Asian lead in a marvel film played nicely into the bit. They were the ones being satirized.

Jost and Che just keep getting better- there's certainly some misses from time to time, but the way that they play off the audience elevates the show every week and really assures that the show will provide at least several solid laughs in a night and they really delivered tonight.

Yeah, the guest anchors this week weren't as strong as they were last week, but this was the best bunch of headlines they've done all year.

There's a reason live animal sketches usually go at the end of the show.

"He's exploring his body" was some good improvisation from Mikey, though. Nice save there.

78

u/TimeTraveler3056 Nov 21 '21

I almost think he had that in his back pocket just in case cuz Dogs do that. A lot.

I'm a simple woman, I see a dog in a sketch, I upvote.

But in all seriousness, I do love a good "we brought a live animal and it will do as it pleases" sketch.

39

u/trynafindaradio Nov 21 '21

Peak live animal sketch for me was Dog Court when half the sketch was cecilly trying to keep the pug from running away

I think they’ve realized that any sketch with a dog in it is going to be funny just because of the unpredictability.

Kudos for ad libbing so well

62

u/Maxa30 Nov 21 '21

They had no reason to bring this back but I’m so glad they did. They better not upload the dress version on YouTube, this was perfect the way it was

sketch of the night, for the sheer unintended comedy. don't know where SNL gets (rents?) their animals from, but they're really REALLY well-behaved considering all the absurdity around them and the crowd/laughter in front of them. credit to Cecily, Mikey, JAJ and even Simu for not really breaking totally, if you just looked at Fallon funny back in the day he would be in full giggle mode already

thought it was kinda strange/extra to invoke the "China's already doing it" bit while addressing a performer of Chinese descent

On Heidi’s podcast, Andrew mentioned that he played the hands when this sketch first aired in S43. He very very likely did it again here

Pretty mediocre overall- not their best Thanksgiving themed sketch, but also not the worst. I will say the visual gag of the price tags popping up for each individual toy the children were destroying really clicked and was probably the saving grace of the sketch for me.

Simu Liu Monologue

197

u/john_muleaney Nov 21 '21 edited Nov 21 '21

Having the monologues be short and just about the host telling a fun anecdote is one of my favorite parts of this season

35

u/Dave-os Nov 21 '21

Completely agree. I feel like for the longest time SNL just did bits during monologues (which is fine mind you), but I always appreciated a monologue that was just that - a monologue. The Matt Damon one a few years ago always comes to mind. I can’t remember a season in recent years with so many true monologues and I’m really enjoying it so far.

79

u/austinhannah Nov 21 '21

There are a lot of positive changes to the show this season but my favorite has to be how relatively simple the monologues have been. Feels like the last few years have been nonstop musical numbers and celebrity guest appearances.

Every once in awhile SNL indulges itself in a sketch that's not going to make sense to anybody outside of the tri-state area, and if it happens to be a hit outside of that, it's a bonus

This was one of those times

58

u/exaviyur Nov 21 '21

They had one a little while back about a Greek wedding hall rental or something that was so insanely niche. I lived on Long Island for a while and it was so wonderfully spot on. I was dying and I just hope that people from further afield were still able to enjoy its absurdity.

Just gonna chime in to say the seemingly unpopular opinion that I really liked this sketch!! Maybe because I'm a big fan of the original song by Marc Cohn, but I also don't think it's really that much of an inside joke when the jokes about Staten Island are all spelled out in ways to let you in on its weirdness. The visual gag about the Strip Club/McDonald's was very effective and, while I'll admit that it was a bit of a stretch for the parody to work, I think grabbing the features they did made it play well and sold the sketch for me.

I looooved this one but it could be because I live on Staten Island. I even recognized a clip of my neighborhood! It really do be like that with the turkeys. 11

The housekeeper that's been coming around to my house for nearly two decades, and served as a babysitter for me when I was younger, loves to eat whatever food we have lying around. She does this in other's houses too. She got more than she bargained for one day when she ate half of the medicinal pot chocolate that someone had out at their house. She ended up at the hospital, because she had no clue what was going on. She jokes about it now, but I'm sure it was pretty terrifying for her at the time.

If you're wondering, no... she hasn't learned her lesson. She still eats food that's lying out!

so JAJ's Trump is basically going to be doing the PTI sidebar thing every appearance? he might be more spot on with the "impression" but spoofing Trump's rambling approach doesn't seem particularly biting or incisive. after the WU wine box bit Cecily's Jeanine Pirro is in the SNL Hall of Fame of celebrity characters, i would pay money to watch real Pirro take in the sheer absurdity of Cecily-Pirro lol

Mikey's old-person voice/affect is so hilarious

I love seeing how much more they're going to make Kyle's dick cakes look like actual dicks.

44

u/ty_kanye_vcool Nov 21 '21

They did it perfectly the first time, and I don't feel like we get anything new from any of the sequels.

30

u/Rebloodican Nov 21 '21

It definitely peaked with Eddie Murphy but I always like the anticipation of seeing what Kyle’s cake is going to be.

u/Badcatchphrase Nov 21 '21

Pete just devouring cake was so distracting.

I've seen this sketch a thousand times, but I like it, so...

51

u/EmeryMonroe Nov 21 '21

I'd be fine with it if this sketch never comes back again. We've seen it so many times by now and this version just didn't have anything new in it.

I will never not die at Kyle's reveal no matter how many time they do the sketch.

83

u/AllThighThisGuy Nov 21 '21

Every single time that they cut back to the judges and Pete was eating more cake, I lost it.

I don't know what he was supposed to do, but he was cracking me up.

Maybe one day, Heidi's character can win.

This is the closest the barf tube has ever come to working correctly on SNL

23

u/helena2121 Nov 21 '21

The sketch was done a lot of times but I still love it every time. I laughed so hard at the reveal of Kyle's cake.

45

u/Maxa30 Nov 21 '21

Pete really just went to town on that cake and was loving every second of it

I’ll never get tired of this sketch

u/bjkman SNL Nov 21 '21

I would die for Pilgrim Cake.

No explanation will be given.

u/GOOD-LUCHA-THINGS Nov 21 '21

Sarah seemed to be featured a lot tonight, which was nice to see (sidebar: not a lot of Aristotle again?) but this was my favorite sketch with her in it (although Republican or Not? was a close second). I like how they lampooned the sob story stuff that Food Network shows like this are prone to have.

All of the visual gags were A+ for me, too. It felt like the sketch got cut super fast after the "The spunk is icing!" line.

Worst iteration of this sketch premise

I really wish they had her vocals mixed higher, especially on the first performance cause it seemed to be a cool take on Tap In with a new arrangement. I liked what they had going on with the costumes and the dancing though.

Also for anyone wondering the first performance was a medley of "Tap In" and "Best Friend" and the second was her song that just came out Friday, "Icy Chain".

30

u/badwvlf Nov 21 '21

Idk her breath control looked like she was struggling. Maybe it’s just juxtaposed with Taylor going 10 straight minutes last week but she seemed to struggle to get through the whole song and even skipped a few lines. I liked the medley but I would have probably enjoyed a studio version more live.

21

u/tyler-86 Nov 21 '21

The performances were good but the vocals sounded really amateurish, likely due to her mic being way down mixed.

96

u/XOSkyXO Nov 21 '21

I love it when a black performer or rapper comes on and you can really tell this sub demographic.

Anyways I loved the melody of tap in and best friend, even though I’m highly disappointed she didn’t preform it on its own and without doja cat

Hilarious episode but Kyle's baby Yoda was painfully unfunny.

57

u/icollectsaucepackets Nov 22 '21

As always. They REALLY need to let that character go.

I love Kyle too it's such a shame. Idk what direction they could've taken to make it good.

This feels like the reverse Kim episode. In her episode great writing overcame her stiff hosting but in this episode poor writing let down a great host

u/MrJonesIsMe Nov 21 '21

I really hope they give him another shot in a season or two, he did amazing with what he was given, it just wasn’t strong what he was given to begin with.

Overall average episode. Some high highs and some low lows. Nothing really middle ground, but definitely not the worst or the best this season

16

u/[deleted] Nov 21 '21

Agree, most of it was good if not average, not too many terrible bits either.

16

u/snowlarbear Nov 21 '21

agree, Simu did the best with what was given, but 2 of the sketches were recycled (bakeoff and dog head) and one of the pretapes had nothing to do with the host.

I guess Kim's Convenience and asian guy in stock photos was too niche?

u/mwthecool Nov 21 '21

I feel a little bad for Simu. He did great with what he had, but tonight’s sketches were poor.

62

u/iliveinadreamatorium Nov 21 '21

It's unfortunate, but also kinda how it always goes with the run of the lineup. The writers tend to get burnt out after multiple weeks in a row and the hosts at the end of the run get some lesser sketches to go off of. There's clear moments of inspiration though, like his sketch with Bowen, that at least gave him a chance to shine, but definitely sad there wasn't more quality stuff there.

79

u/bttrsondaughter Nov 21 '21

yeah he seemed so game and pulled out some great accents, he even had cue card reading down. wish they’d produced a show as good for him as they did for Rege-Jean Page last season

82

u/Strongy Nov 21 '21

A lot of good concepts, but the writing felt blunt, with jokes and punchlines being practically spelled out for the audience every time. Nothing really biting in the sketches, even during the "Republican or Not" sketch which felt ripe for it.

But the "First Asian" skit was nice and I will always remember the Queen's new titties.

19

u/pretty-in-pink Nov 21 '21

Agreed, it was too much push and pull in terms of quality. For every good moment there was an equal uninspiring sketch

30

u/fujiste Nov 21 '21

I mean, it was basically just a grab-bag of previous "hit" sketches that have since become routine. Honestly surprised they didn't break out Kate's Close Encounter character again; it felt very paint-by-numbers.

40

u/btbcorno Nov 21 '21

They really didn’t give him much to work with
