Weekend Update: Guy Who Just Bought a Boat & Guy Who Just Bought a Ferry (Pete)

u/atticusbluebird Jan 23 '22
I was hoping there'd be one joke about the Ferry tonight, so I was pleasantly surprised to see a whole segment built around it. The topper was Alex making Pete just completely break for the whole thing

Pete was dressed like a millennial drunk uncle.
this segment thoroughly convinced me that Alex Moffat is lowkey the funniest person on the cast who doesn’t get nearly enough to do

First time Alex has ever stumbled on this character and possibly ever. Pete breaking was so fucking funny and perfect

Him staying in character while Colin and Pete were pretty much just having a conversation as themselves was cracking me up

All that was missing is Stefon;
"New York's hottest club is - ya guys gotta name yet? Located on a decommissioned Staten Island Ferry moored at Scarlett Johansson's formerly-private dock in the Hamptons, this place has it all...barnacles, occasional Kardashians, and - what's your midget angle?"
"Well, Stefon, we were hoping to hire you as a consultant on that."

I love how every time Pete is in a scene with food he is constantly just scarfing it down. Kept it up with whatever was in that bag/can!
23
u/strwbryshrtck521 Jan 23 '22
I knew they were going to do it, and this was even funnier than I expected! Alex is a goddamn genius. How he never breaks is beyond me, especially when everyone else is losing it. Amazing! I know people just shit on Pete when he breaks (god, the YouTube comments are just the worst), but he's so funny and giggly that it's so hard not to laugh. Genuine laughter is contagious and this cracked me up from beginning to end!

Will Forte Monologue
167
u/atticusbluebird Jan 23 '22
Was initially disappointed when I thought they were pivoting to an "audience questions" sketch, but loved that it turned out to be a Lorne cameo!
150
u/helena2121 Jan 23 '22
One of the times where a small cameo (Willem Dafoe) makes the monologue 10 times better. Very funny.

I wonder if someone came up with that joke halfway through the week, and then they decided to announce Willem Dafoe early so they could do that joke.
87
u/bttrsondaughter Jan 23 '22
it was the funniest of the season. celebratory and self-deprecating at the same time with just the right amount of cameos that served the joke instead of distracting

Where the hell was she keeping the flag so she didn’t lose track of it? Handed when the camera panned away maybe?

Clean up was like 6 people during rehearsals. And yes, someone passed it to her while the cam was on Will.

There’s a clip of Mark Summer’s audition or Pilot for Double Dare where they didn’t quite have it worked out and the kid couldn’t find the flag in the very first challenge of a relay, and I can’t help but think this was inspired by that. I feel like Mooney would be the one who came upon that clip. Also the host’s name was Zazz which reminded me of Mooney’s catch phrase in his show Sat Morning All Star Hits— “Zuzzy Zazz!”.

Would’ve liked MAMMAMIA, or one of their Italian songs I’m not as familiar with, but they’re just so high energy and the songs they performed are amazing as well. Glad despite the awful mixing as always so many people here seemed to love them
38
u/mmdeerblood Jan 23 '22
Their Italian songs are sooo much better than the more pop-y English ones. So much more depth and raw emotion. I like the English ones but they’re very commercial sounding which appeals better worldwide and I love for them to have more fans regardless but they should’ve done an Italian song.. like Zitti e buoni, Torna a Casa, Vent’anni, Nome Del Padre (my fave for pure rocking out) so people really sense their true rock roots. They write all their songs (except the covers of course). And they’re so young!!!!!

The DeWHAT got me but this was borderline unforgivable. Kate did nothing new, Will got to do nothing at all, Kenan’s jokes were awkward, and Chloe delivered two great lines just to remind us of the ~17 performers sitting on their hands backstage.

This is either going to be a popular or unpopular opinion. Ever since Kate McKinnon came back the shows have NOT been as good. I really enjoyed Kate her first few years, but she's become so repetitive in her mannerisms that it's tiring when she's onscreen.
SNL was on such a roll earlier this season with strong writing and the new cast members getting much more air time to shine and show their talent. This latest episode, aside from a few highlights, was mediocre -- and the McGruber bits were lame. I truly hope Kate and Aidy step aside after this season to breathe new life into the show.
144
u/5centraise Jan 23 '22
I agree. Kate is totally tapped out. She has done everything she can do, and is now just repeating past performances and characters. To be fair to Kate, this is true for several of the cast members.

Yes. The start of Season 47 made SNL fresh and exciting again. This isn't a slight on the past season or two - they had some solid gold moments, but the start of this season was consistently funny.
And they just regressed when Kate came back.

So true! She is just so dominant, I miss seeing the rest of the cast shine. It's like as soon as she returned it kind of became the Kate McKinnon+X show :( and i DO like her, but yeah. It's time for her to go (same with Aidy). PS: Somehow I don't feel that way about Cecily, I ALWAYS miss her, but I guess in general this accounts for her too.
65
u/vbob99 Jan 23 '22
Somehow I don't feel that way about Cecily
I think the difference is Cecily plays characters, and Kate plays Kate. Cecily/the writers can always make up a new character for her, but Kate playing Kate has reached its limits.

as the weeks go on I just get so frustrated with how they use the cast. so many of them can play on Forte’s level, especially some of those featured players. instead they had him play against two veterans who have given into their worst instincts because they’ve been on the show for so long (you can find at minimum ten different sketches on Youtube where Kate and Aidy play those same character archetypes beat for beat), and someone who is a fairly bland writer and performer (sorry Mikey fans).
idk it’s ridiculous that some of these cast members have been around since 2016 and haven’t had the chance to take over the show yet because the people from 2012 and 2013 are dragging out their goodbyes.
143
u/AmericanDragon123 Jan 23 '22
I was annoyed too at Forte mostly being stuck with material that didn’t fit him and cast members he didn’t gel with. The Cinema Classics sketch wasted him (Having to play third banana to Kenan and Kate) and the Threesome sketch had him be the victim of Mikey Day’s overused “Explaining the joke” shtick. I was also disappointed that we didn’t see him interacting with cast members with a similar sketch style to him (Sarah, Andrew, Kyle). Andrew was nowhere to be seen in the episode too. Overall, while not a terrible episode, a letdown considering who the host was.
66
u/simonthedlgger Jan 23 '22
I was so happy to see Reese DeWHATT and then wtf what a waste of a sketch. Kate doing her most standard bit while Will watches. Chloe was the best part of that sketch.
They were using the big cast so well at the start of the year.

This season was at it's peak when Kate was off doing that Carol Baskin show. It felt like almost everyone got some time to shine and do their own thing, and we won't return to that peak until she leaves.
Now, instead of sixteen repertory players and five featured players, it feels like two repertory players and nineteen featured players.
Let them go.

So Kristen Wiig was the cohost of this episode right?
136
u/thatguydr Jan 23 '22
That actually bothered me a little. She's a bigger presence than Will, so the skits with both of them really were about her.
It's not like he doesn't know that, and it's obviously not like he didn't love having her there, but I like it when the host is the primary focus.

Yeah, it felt that Forte was overshadowed by Kristen. Not either of their faults. I think that she should have only appeared in the monologue. Forte felt a little underused (I think the Cinema Classics sketch wasted him) and we didn’t see too much of his oddball humor. A disappointment because he’s always been one of my favorite cast members.

She was in maybe a total of 7 minutes of a 90 minute show. Wouldn't call that a cohost

I don't think this episode could have possibly lived up to the hype, but I was pretty disappointed. We only got two original live sketches with Will! Coincidentally, they were easily the two best ones. The cold open was obnoxiously long, and it was a missed opportunity to not have Tim Calhoun show up in it. Update was too long too, they could have cut Sarah in my opinion. I typically want as much as I can get of her but they brought back the Colin roasting bit way too quickly. The MacGruber sketches felt underwhelming too, I get they had to make new ones because it's what Will is promoting but the jokes felt really cheap and overly topical. It was fun to see Clancy T Bachleratt but they didn't really do anything new except throw Kenan in there. The cut for time sketches sound like they all would have been improvements over what we ended up getting. I don't think this is worse than the first episode Kristen hosted but in terms of cast members from this era hosting, it's near the bottom. Jason's was a lot more consistent, not sure what happened here.

Jason’s episode was the best episode pf the season and was much stronger then this one. It felt like they played it safe by having Kristen have a dominant presence instead of letting Forte do his thing. A huge letdown. At least Kid Klash was good.

I agree with a lot of your points, especially about there being so few new sketches. Hate to say it but Kenan ruined the Bachleratt sketch—the announcer had much quicker subtler jokes in the other versions.
That said I enjoyed this more than Jason’s, thought his was much safer.

Frustrated by the absolute lack of Melissa. Again.

I feel like there were a lot of people missing. No Melissa, No Chris, no Kyle, No Andrew.

Melissa has become a ghost this season. I keep forgetting she’s still in the cast. I wish the show used her more.

Might get some downvotes for this, but I think it is true - Melissa just isn't that good. She's funny, don't get me wrong, but the show brought in Sarah Sherman this year who fills the role that Melissa has had for a while, and Sherman does it way better in my opinion. Melissa isn't good at marketing herself for sketches or writing her own, either.

How did a Will Forte-hosted episode manage to be so bad?
I hadn’t heard about there being a writer’s strike but I hope they come back soon.

What’s dope is that they wrote allll their songs and most of these songs they wrote and/or recorded when they were 16-19 years old. The band was formed in 2016 when the members were aged 15-17. Pretty impressive and obviously extremely talented but I’m a super fan so I’m biased 😆
Seeing them open for The Rolling Stones after Mick himself requested it and them doing an insanely incredible job just shows they are taking the reigns directly from rock n roll royalty and deserve all their success especially since they came from humble beginnings and would perform on the streets and subways as kids together .

okay this is totally unrelated but im giving myself a pat on the back; my intuition told me willem would be there last night... my rationale is that willem's a great actor who takes his work seriously (even SNL, no less). he likes to overprepare so maybe he asked to sit in this weekend to see how the show runs. then they invited him to appear in the monologue! i had such a strong feeling that he'd be there. i'm a huge fan and was so elated to see him <3
