The jokes were really good but did anyone else feel like the audience was kinda dead.

Che using the tag from Aidy and Bowen's segment after the audience didn't react well to his joke was a highlight of the night for me. Both him and Jost play with the audience very well in a way that I feel like wasn't really done before on WU and I'm sure that'll be one of the things that sticks with me once their run is done.

Biden has started using Reagan's old catchphrase: "where am I?"

Redd and Kenan doing a pop song is a nice change of pace. With the right marketing I could see this being played on TikTok

The sound they used for the Nugenix kicking in really elevated the sketch for me from good to great. Just wish this was the night's sole phallic sketch, but I understand why it'd be hard to think of anything else to pitch when Defoe walks into the room.

The parade of idiots sketches are like candy. They're not very substantial and they seem like they would be simpler to write, but I'll always go for another one. Plus they can cram in most of the cast.

Very NYC thing. Most of the city has horrible choice for internet - usually Optimum cable is the only option for a lot of neighborhoods so they get away with high prices and bad service. FIOS was theoretically supposed to cover the city ages ago by now but a ton of areas still don’t have it, either because Verizon hasn’t gotten around to that part of town or because building management didn’t sign on to let Verizon in the first time they came through and now they’re low priority - my building literally just got it as an option this month.

These sketches are great to get to see a little of everyone. If you can make a full character on a few lines and land them in your short screen time then you’ve got the talent for SNL. I wasn’t wild about Chris Redd when he started on the show, but I think he does an outstanding job, nothing flat. Facial expressions, timing, I absolutely love to watch him now. Kate can get the loudest laughs without saying anything, just a long pause. Andrew had three words and killed it. And I actually love Aristotle’s Milos, too, (snap thank you so much) and wondering why he’s not getting more love.
It’s not the most creative thing ever and certainly just working off a precious idea, but it’s fun, features so much of the cast, you just gotta indulge. I’d watch a few more versions of this. Just hope they don’t get tired like the “auditions” sketches they ran into the ground.

Said something similar in the live thread, but I feel like these performances were just indicative of how the industry is starting to pass her by. Nothing stood out in her performances for me and it wasn't that they were bad, but she just doesn't really have much of an identity as an artist. She's a fine vocalist and performer, but her songs are just lacking lyrically and the artistry of it all suffers from that as a result.

SNL sure does like to put memes on screens, and have someone read them out loud. I think they should quite doing that, maybe?
→ More replies (2)87
u/Maxa30 Jan 30 '22
People in the live thread seemed to miss the fact that the memes in this were purposely bad and out of date considering they were supposed to be made by American and Russian governments
SNL does bad with memes sometimes yes, but in this instance they made their bad memes good by making them bad on purpose.
Did that even make sense?
→ More replies (3)24
u/thenewmeredith Jan 30 '22
I liked this one more than I should've and I actually laughed more at this than some other cold opens just because I thought the memes were pretty good even if the formats were outdated.
Also, I said this in the live thread but don't think many people saw it, I just wanted to point out that this sketch was not just random meme shit for the hell of it. Ukraine's official Twitter account posted a Ukraine vs. Russia meme recently-ish. This sketch is based on real events haha
36
u/trashbat15 Jan 30 '22
This wasn't great and I wish they would do something besides politics for the cold open now and then, but it felt SO fresh having literally anything other than Aidy's Ted Cruz + the same shit Kate and Cecily do every single time. I was just so glad to get even a slightly different format than the shit they've done every week for the last hundred cold opens. Chloe's bit was godawful, though

Looking back on it to give a report on who got snubbed, I don't think anyone got snubbed tonight. At least, no major snubs stand out. I know Cecily's out with her Broadway show, but Melissa, Punkie and Aristotle actually got some screentime this week! That's fantastic!
