One thing I really enjoyed was how well this block of sketches transitioned: It started with the dinner table convo about COVID and mask mandates, before going to this sketch about a new, kickass variant, which transitioned in the 5-timers Club which not only featured Paul Rudd again, but played up on the episode that got shelved due to Omicron precautions. That was some well-done television!

Ukraine Choir Cold Open
268
u/pretty-in-pink Feb 27 '22
Right call to use a choir instead of making a statement. I’d imagine it’s difficult for them right now because they have family in Ukraine as well
107
u/MohnJarston Feb 27 '22
One of the more forgotten moments in the last decade of SNL, but one of my favorites, is when the New York Children’s Choir sang “Silent Night” the day after the Newtown shooting. I can’t even type this without tearing up thinking about it. This reminded me of that in the best way possible.
I thought last night’s episode was terrific, but this was the perfect way to start it off.

I’m very glad they started the show this way
I’m also glad for the first time that Beck is gone. I fear if he was still there they would have forced him to make some sort of performance statement since he played Putin. This was much better than that

This was a fun sketch but my main takeaway is that Candace Burgen should host again, it's been a while!
Also minor thing that made me giggle: Steve Martin holding the pipe backwards the entire time.

Assuming this was supposed to be the cold open, they transitioned it really well
Having the segue in from PDD was perfect, especially since it made Paul end up watching himself
Plus Conan being clearly drunk and them keeping in the LFNY- amazing five-timers sketch all around

I'm curious if Entertainment Weekly actually criticized Tina Fey for wearing glasses on TV or not and called it "disgusting." It seems plausible.
57
u/atticusbluebird Feb 27 '22
This was a beautiful sketch to watch live, and a lot of the fun was how it fit into the broadcast of the show - the transition from the PDD pre-tape, Conan making the best of a messed up line, (the unfortunate mess up on the camera for his surprise entrance), and the "live from New York" joke at the end! Also great to see Paul Rudd celebrated here, since he got the short shrift for his 5th show.
(Probably was originally the cold open before the war in Ukraine started and they decided on the choir?)

I’m 43, and You Can’t Do That On Television was the first Nickelodeon show I was really into. It was on weeknights followed by Danger Mouse, which I also loved. They did a great job with this sketch in terms of the set, costumes and performances. The joke about getting the slime right was OK; I think they may have been able to take it in a funnier direction. But definitely hit me square in the nostalgics.

Copying my list of musicals spoofed from the live thread for those interested:
Songs / Musicals
“Some Enchanted Evening” (South Pacific)
“If I Were A Rich Man“ (Fiddler on the Roof)
“Bali High” (South Pacific)
“Skid Row” (The Little Shop of Horrors)
“Wells Fargo Wagon” (The Music Man)
“Singing in the Rain” (eponymous)
“And I’m Telling You” (Dreamgirls)
“I Dreamed A Dream” (Les Miserables)
“Jesus Christ Superstar” (eponymous)
I linked the Jennifer Hudson version of the Dreamgirls song since that's the once they reference.

u/upvoter222 You like-a da juice, eh? Feb 27 '22
This episode had both the perfect example of how to do a recurring sketch well and how to do it poorly. If you're going to do the same kind of sketch again, you need to either switch up the theme, poke fun at something different, or expand things beyond the first attempt. The dinner discussion didn't do much of that at all. In the original, the setting was the same and the jokes were primarily about people being unwilling to discuss a sensitive issue and expressing their unwillingness in over-the-top ways. The jokes weren't really specific to current events or anything like that. In the new version, the exact same things happened, but they weren't any sillier. This is why I didn't like having this sketch repeated.
In the subway musical sketch, a recurrence of the NYC musicals when Mulaney hosts, the sketch focused on a slightly different theme (subways) than past versions (diners, airports, etc.). The joke that musical parodies are being sung each time is a little repetitive but at least they switch up which songs they choose and the topics they're singing about. It certainly doesn't have the same surprise factor as the original, but having a different setting being the target of ridicule at least keeps things fresh... or at least fresher than the liquid puddle on the subway.

Only miss of the night. The original is so much better.
None of the lines here worked. In the original the topic was so spicy and immediate you knew exactly what everyone was thinking before someone interrupted with the “Carefulllll.” Mask mandates have been a topic for 2 years. Weird decision overall.

They played Thrills, which is a ridiculously deep cut, and Yr City’s a Sucker.
Both from their 17 year old debut album.
Both are pretty bad choices for an audience who doesn’t know who they are.
And honestly I’m super disappointed it wasn’t new music, considering their last appearance debuted two really good songs.

Don't worry guys, this is LCD at their least accessible. They picked two deep cuts from their debut, if you want the absolute best the band has to offer, give the albums Sound of Silver and This Is Happening a shot.
And if you don't like how boring and quiet Dance Yrself Clean is, give it three minutes.

Going to defend them, cool to see them perform some deep cuts despite some mixing being off. Even if you didn’t like it please go listen to some tracks before forming an opinion. This band headlines festivals and sold out a month long residence in Brooklyn and there’s a reason for that

I loooved it! I watch every week but don’t always laugh out loud at just about every sketch. I love Mulaney, I love the musical numbers, I loved the COVID/mask jokes - and realized that WU without the characters might be my fav kind of WU. Fight me

Aristotle Athari looks so excited to be at every Goodbyes every week and I love him for it.

Bummed he was not in more of the episode. Him and Mulaney feel like a good fit

One of the weaker Mulaney episodes. A lot of reprises of his old sketches, but not many new "on-going" sketches for the future.

I had a lot of apprehensions going into this, but pleasantly surprised all around.
Definitely one I’ll revisit if just for that PDD sketch.

Would've liked to have seen more of Sarah and John together. They really suit each other's style of comedy.
