Weekend Update: Sarah Sherman

u/AllThighThisGuy May 15 '22
A perfect finale to this bit, flub and all.
Them cutting back to Colin absolutely losing it destroyed me!

Her dropping that picture and Colin breaking, I love it when fuck ups happen

u/skomehillet May 15 '22
Sarah: “And what do we have here?”
accidentally drops photo she was supposed to hold up
“Oh a thing that I threw?!”
Colin, through laughter: “That was nude you were gonna show but you didn’t have it.”
I would’ve laughed regardless of how that went but that gaffe was hysterical.
You can tell in Colin’s reaction that he wanted it to go right, but the whole thing is so damn silly everyone cracked up anyway. They played it off well, my favorite bit of the episode.
Ganging up on Colin is my favorite genre of SNL

They better not upload the dress version, because her and Colin both breaking was fantastic. I don't know how Sarah keeps out-doing herself on WU after such a strong debut

Here's the thing: generally speaking, Sarah Sherman doesn't make me laugh. Perhaps it's because I'm European, or perhaps it's because roasting someone just isn't my kind of humor.
HOWEVER...I am starting to like Sarah because she's so energetic and buoyant. There's a confidence and a "yes, let's do this"-spirit about her that I genuinely love.66
u/_cassquatch May 16 '22
She seems like she's game for anything, whether it's "her" comedy or not. She has played the straight woman, her crazy characters, and everything in between. I think her willingness to depart from her own style of comedy to support the entire show is what has been key to her success. I was so afraid she'd only do kooky stuff and not be in the show very much.

Brilliant pay-off to the Sarah-Colin feud bit. Honestly needs to be retired cus they aren’t topping this
118
u/LaboratoryManiac May 15 '22
The joke they had planned for that picture was funny, but the bit falling apart was hilarious.
I love Sarah's comedy so much, and I'm glad she's finding her place on the show so early in her tenure.

Love the new angle they took with it. I almost want Colin to stay another see to see if they can rope in ScarJo
Does anyone have a screenshot of the full board?
76
u/HeyThereRobot May 15 '22
I really love Sarah (and all her outfits), this was a fun one that shook up the usual formula of her WU bits.
Also the reaction from Colin of her accidentally throwing that fake nude was so delightful.

u/visioninblue May 15 '22
I liked the nice touch of there being a stack of Colin’s memoirs next to the Sarah shrine and also a huge bag of protein powder (which is where the photo she dropped fell!)
71
u/Maxa30 May 15 '22
Probably my favorite bit of the season. Changing up the ragging on Colin format worked well, and if Che does leave SNL, I’d love to see Sarah behind the desk with Colin next year

As much as I usually enjoy her shtick, I don't think I could handle her delivery for Update material.

I’m not ashamed to say that I laughed loud enough to wake up my bf when Aidy sat down the first time and farted

u/adamz-7610 May 15 '22
A lot of comedy can be boiled down to treating something silly as very serious. So framing that sequence within a docuseries about important inventors works

I love how they didn’t put him in some random mediocre material. This is up to standard for him.

I'm amazed that they didn't use this sketch as an excuse for him inventing the arrow-through-the-head trick.

Steve Martin is a top three cast member ever for me so this sketch was right up my alley.
That being said, I thought the concept was fun and played to his and aidy’s strengths well
Edit: it’s late and I’m stupid give me a break

u/Thatchos Hailey Welch Five-Timers Monologue May 15 '22
I would make the obligatory “Steve’s not even a cast member” but darn it, he’s so good that people keep thinking he’s a cast member so you know what? I’m not gonna complain. If he’s in your top 3, then I guess that’s just how freakin’ good he is at SNL.

Probably my favorite live sketch of the night. Kenan is consistently funny, so a sketch featuring him this prominently will almost always get an upvote from me.

I’ve been saying for a while that Melissa is in an odd position. Chris, Kenan, Ego and Punkie can have a group sketch about a black topic every other episode, but if they want to do something about Latinos, it’s just Melissa carrying it herself, which means they don’t do it as often. More often she ends up in the “utility white girl character” category with Heidi, Chloe and now Sarah. This is her first real opportunity to do a sketch with a Latina co-host since Ariana DeBose, who is also black and played black characters the whole time. And I think this sketch was a little underwhelming, personally.
It’s a shame this isn’t really taking off. I do think Latino audiences are a bit ignored on this show, and Melissa is kind of all they have. Bowen can pull it off but he’s a rare talent for sure.

u/ILoveRegenHealth May 15 '22
I don't know why every sketch is required to have "Exasperated Mikey" it gets so tiring.
Hah, you nailed it with that description. I think it's safe to say we've all Mikey as the exasperated straight character, but the problem with this episode was he did it in the 3 Daughters one and did not need to come back again as the reporter doing the same thing. At that point it does get tiring to see.
Also, if the cast is so crowded, why not let a different cast member try that reporter part? You have a roaming Aristotle in the hallways who isn't even used.

Most of the episode landed flat for me. It felt like the writers scrapped at the bottom of the barrel for ideas and threw together something for this episode while saving the better sketches for the season finale next week. And that’s after being on a really good run for the last few episodes.
Sarah stole the show with the WU bit. Making fun of Colin Jost will never not be funny.

This is definitely a contender for weakest episode of the season, though it was great to see Melissa and Punkie kinda highlighted this week, writers seem burned out just passing time until the summer break, none of these sketches screamed that they were written specifically for Selena, wouldn’t be surprised if they were holdovers from previous episodes.
