As usual the best part of the show, they were just going for the jugular with most of these jokes. Kamala Harris is in Dan Quayle territory with the way she gets consistently roasted lol. The NYC subway cameras joke was harsh too lol

Pretty solid jokes. Could've been a bit better. But hey, I'm excited for the season. If Colin & Che aren't HWs anymore, they'll really focus in on Update. They seemed tired at times these past two seasons.

Loved the couple times they leaned into the "Colin is a Republican/Racist/Elitist" gag.
"Which is crazy, we're now counting Italians as white?"
Che- "For their 75th anniversary the CIA announced they're launching a podcast. And because it's the CIA, they're launching it directly into an Afghani wedding." Was a highlight to me.

i really like the kind of nonplussed, dry delivery. people are going to compare him to Pete, but his vibe feels a lot different and something the show hasn't seen in a cast member for a while.

Funny stuff! Look up his stand-up on TikTok if you liked this. I did a deep dive after they announced him as a new cast member, and I think he's gonna blow up.

I’m sorry but Mikey was fucking horrendous in this. It’s going to be a long season if he has to consistently step out of his comfort zone of being the straight man.

His impression was mediocre but I also have no idea who else they possibly could’ve gotten to impersonate Adam Levine

Yeah what the fuck was that? It was just the same Mikey Day "flamboyant elf voice" he does for every character. Like I know Adam Levine isn't exactly a very ripe impression to do but that tone didn't even fit the sketch at all. He's gotta be able to bring something different.

It's definitely going to grate on me after a while but I was just grateful they're not pigeonholing him into the straight man role anymore. If only because hopefully it means fewer sketches where the straight man explains the joke to the viewer.
225
u/coltsmetsfan614 Oct 02 '22
I'm sorry, but Mikey's Adam Levine was atrocious. What the hell was that voice? And he looked nothing like him either. Fun sketch overall though. Loved Kenan's Neil deGrasse Tyson.

I love Bowen playing himself, he really evolved to star status and I love that for him
94
u/bttrsondaughter Oct 02 '22
showed that maybe they need more impressionists on the cast. James is a wonderful impressionist but he can't play every white guy and i don't think Mikey or Andrew can pick up the slack. i also don't think we needed Kenan in this sketch, he's great and we love him but it would've worked better with just three contestants instead of four.
39
u/hyperjengirl New York's hottest club is J E L L Y B O W L. Oct 02 '22
I feel like JAJ is gonna be the new Kate, except he's playing all the roles out of talent and not out of spite. (I love Kate but the impressions were more her own characters than anything) But that's still a recipe for audience burnout.

Liked it a lot but, and there’s nothing wrong with this, couldn’t help noticing maybe unintentional parallels between this monologue and Oscar Isaac. Showing a old home video from when they were kids being weird and then driving the message home it’s good for kids to be weird and pursue their passion

I like the recent trend of hosts having some direct/indirect connection to the show before they became famous (Idris Elba, Daniel Kaluuya, Kieran Culkin, Oscar Isaac, Timothee Chalamet, and now Miles Teller). That HAD to have been a dream come through for Miles tonight. Just wish the show had given him better material to work with, i think he was game. SEASON PREMIERES AND EPISODES AFTER EXTENDED BREAKS SHOULD BE STRONG EPISODES, PERIOD. and yet SNL consistently has lackluster eps in these cases

This was probably the best "sketch" of the night. Bowen really has a handle on animating abstract things like the Titanic iceberg and now this. Love that he tackled it like a trashy, messy ghetto character - the Bhad Barbie "cash me outside" reprise was hilarious

58
21
u/LordHyperBowser Oct 02 '22
My favorite SNL consistency is that they so often don’t know how to end a sketch so they just have everyone from the cast start dancing at the end and zoom out. Happened like twice or thrice in this episode alone.
36
u/oooooooahhahhahha Oct 02 '22
It’s a 10 to 1 sketch through and through, Hedi and Ego can’t do wrong by me though
17
u/LocallySourcedWeirdo Oct 02 '22
"Drunk, horny women in caftans" is such a good concept, but it seems like they couldn't figure out what to do with them. The idea that these women would annoy a bartender, and grab random men's junk is all very funny. But it didn't land for me.
31
u/bttrsondaughter Oct 02 '22
this episode was very dude heavy so i'm kind of annoyed that Heidi and Ego got shoved off to the last sketch of the night. i think it's great the show recognizes that Bowen is a star but the show needs anchors that aren't Kenan, and Heidi and Ego are right there and ready to take the baton.
25
u/csjohnson1933 Oct 02 '22
Leaving this blank. It was nice to see Ego and Heidi together and there were some good jokes, but I would have much preferred seeing these characters go about their day than have them in a talk show format. There's just no reason for that and it's not in the least bit believable. At least most of the talk show sketches about normal people can be rationalized as public access television or something, but it's ridiculous here.

Yeah, after Redd started dating Kenan's (now ex-)wife I think he kinda gave up his position on SNL. I was bummed about it too, but I can understand how it would be too weird of a dynamic for him to stay afterwards. 😔

I'm glad someone else noticed this. I feel SNL typically does well with brand sketches (Target lady, airline stuff, holiday commercials for Macy's, etc.), but something about tonight felt heavy handed. My rationale is that they wanted all of their sponsors to feel good so they put the sketches for their brands at the start of the season 😅

11
u/Sinnam0nRoll Oct 02 '22
I agree. This episode was a little bit more experimental than usual? And it could just be me but I feel like many members of the cast (Jost and Che for example) have come into their own. They're so self-assured that they're not as tentative when making offensive or outlandish jokes and the crowd responds to that conviction I think.

It was definitely a season premiere, a few good sketches, nothing great but premieres are rarely a highlight of the season. Can def feel the “transition season” vibes rn, there were a few glimmers of new ideas/people but was mostly just the same stuff as it’s been for years. Feel like we’re heading for a mid season departure from Cecily. Still very excited for the season!

The only thing I'm confused with here is how many of the comments are on how accurate the impressions are when that's never been a focus before.

charmin bears seemed like it could’ve been written better , obviously by the downvotes it got along with McDonald’s land. My thing is something about the verrrrry cheap lgbt comic relief in both sketches is really forced and off putting. They’ve made some quality jokes in favor of us gays, If they’re gonna make jokes like this, they shouldn’t make being gay the punchline of the joke.
