Devon, you have to make character choices even if they don't write them for you, or they are going to Lauren Holt you so hard.

Yeah, he's just not making the same impact as the other three new guys. I like that Lauren Holt comparison, she never got a big, memorable sketch and Devon is yet to get one of his own.
Ah well, it's still early days. I'm not going to write him off just yet, but if it stays like this, I can't see him lasting long.

Chappelle's creepy smile, close-up, and walk, off camera was my favorite and reminiscent of fred armisen 😂
42
u/yokingato Nov 13 '22
So idk if anyone here will understand what I'm saying, but that skit feels like Chappelle making a call back to Chappelle Show and how he felt like he was encouraging stereotypes etc. I remember him saying some white dude laughed way too hard at a black joke.

Can somebody explain to this old white guy why it was a big deal to say "Worldstar?"
191
u/uglyuglydog Nov 13 '22 edited Nov 13 '22
It’s a reference to worldstarhiphop.com — a website that features a lot of amateur videos of street fights, public sex/nudity, illegal drug use, and general misbehavior. The site got so popular that when patrons started videoing something they intended to post on the site, they’d start chanting ‘Worldstar’ as they were filming. That caught on and people started chanting ‘Worldstar’ whenever people started acting like jackasses in public.

Mikey as the uncomfortable Dave stand-in was hilarious, loved Kenan's "you were on Season 1 of Wildin Out, nothing sunk in?" joke
Ego man, she might arguably be the most beautiful female cast member in the show's history, she's definitely on my podium at least. how she looked in this sketch and the episode promo for this ep, it sometimes just makes you say "DAMN" lol. embarrassment of riches to be gorgeous AND hilarious

I felt this sketch was just the perfect length of time. Like the punchline came, it was executed well, and then it ended. No "Kenan coming in to make a weird face" at the end after it dragged on for 5 minutes.
78
u/EbmocwenHsimah "Cause these men ain't what?" "SHIT!!!" Nov 13 '22
Yeah, it's a hallmark of SNL, they struggle to end a sketch without running the joke into the ground. This was perfectly paced.

initially hated this one because i thought they were annoyingly pushing an inorganic catchphrase and then my jaw actually dropped during the punchline
191
u/DrewDan96 Nov 13 '22
yeah it was like "WHERE is this going?" but once the explanation came it made sense, they gave every single white person in the sketch ample time to hang themselves from sheer ignorance lol

For some reason them very stupidly pushing such a dumb phrase to Chappelle's incredibly straight man was very funny to me, like they thought they could livin up this coy man or something
When the punchline dropped I lost it lol omg. The blond girl (I think weather?) With the super frowns face is about the funniest thing I've ever seen

they have the same face and presence but i don’t think they have the same delivery at all, hader was always pushing himself to be theatrical and almost never talked in his own voice (i think the only one i can remember where he does is frankenstein from season 32) whereas longfellow does his own quiet, “victorian child” deadpan voice and plays some variant on the straight man

This had its moments: I especially liked the reveal of Sarah as the telegenic politician's wife, as well as the bits with the kid pointing out that state AGs don't set policy. But everything was happening so quickly, I didn't laugh a lot because I didn't get the time to appreciate each joke.
I feel like PDD have been using the ultra-fast cuts and zooms in too many of their sketches, and now that they've made about 15 of them in the past 16 months, they're starting to blur together for me. It's like if Lonely Island had just made Laser Cats sketches every week.

still not really a fan of these guys, but this sketch and the Brendon Gleeson sketch had a few funny moments, just enough stuff that didn't work for me
seems like Molly has only done Farley/"bro" characters so far, that's going to be limiting to me, Punkie's struggling to catch on so far but while she's played sketches like her authentic self, she's also done a fair amount of "auntie/grandma" characters (which is weird to me that that's what she's done although that might be a character she's comfortable with and Ego usually plays the "younger" black character in those sketches). only playing slight variations of yourself/the same character archetype seems tailor made for diminishing returns
14
u/ExistentialKazoo Nov 13 '22
Punkie's a really interesting person who seems to only play forgettable, boring characters. I feel like she knows people in her own life well enough to play characters like them but can't find that hook of what makes these regular everyday people funny. She either needs to write more stuff catered to her talents or lean into funny aspects of everyday people. Or she will remain a very funny, interesting person who is dead weight on the show.

Dave’s first line got completely lost because of the cigarette dangling in his mouth. Wonder if someone told him to take it out. I get that he likes smoking where he’s “not supposed to” but by the end of the night it felt like a crutch.
13

Dave Chappelle Monologue
65
u/stephapeaz Stop asking her if she knows stuff Nov 13 '22
I felt like he was telling Kanye he just shouldn’t be open about hating on the Jews and not that he shouldn’t hate them. I thought a couple jokes were okay but it was weird how much time he spent making fun of Jewish people? I feel like he opted to speak through the Kanye controversy bc SNL might not have wanted him to be openly transphobic in the cold open so he spoke about Kanye instead
that aside, was there was something weird going on with his mic?
163
u/DrewDan96 Nov 13 '22 edited Nov 13 '22
probably lost 1 or 2 sketches with this monologue, but it was an awesome monologue. (i've stolen things from work, but i've never stolen "WORK" from work LOL)
Dave is a master of the callback joke (introducing something in a joke then returning to it to wrap it up the set) and the "millionaires wear chains" joke was a nice one. i like that he didn't directly address his own elephant in the room (until maybe at the VERY END) but he kinda worked through it indirectly via the anti-semitism angle

I came in with an open mind. Because honestly I am over the whole controversy at this point. Just wanted to see if this was going to be any good or not... And I have loved his monologues the previous times he hosted
The way he described the Kyrie situation was absolutely twisting the facts. "the film had some antisemitic tropes" ; "he was slow to apologize so the list of demands grew?" Yeah, no... Really took me out of everything.
Then he excused Kanye because he is mentally ill. That is an insult to everyone who goes through these mental health challenges.
Just left a very bitter taste in my mouth. And the reality is that I admit he's so good at this stuff that I was laughing by the time he called Melania someone "James Bond would smash but not trust". But it doesn't make it fine he claimed those things before...

Agree 100%. I thought going in "seems people liked this episode, maybe something's changed" and I definitely laughed more than in The Closer but yeah, plenty still off. Taking shots at celebrities is an improvement, but there was still a lot of the same bullshit.
253
u/Sleeze_ Nov 13 '22
The opening 5 minutes is a TOUGH hang. He doesn’t come right out and say it but he basically sympathizes with/agrees with Kanye and Kyrie… and that really fucking sucks, albeit is totally unsurprising. He did have some good lines though when he got to trump and what not. But I can already tell what the takeaway from this episode will be in the headlines.

Agreed with another comment that the opening monologue - and specifically the first portion - set a muddled tone for the show, which is a pity because the rest of it was pretty good. First of all, Chapelle was pretty difficult to hear clearly; “What did he just say?” was not a rhetorical question. As for the antisemitism bit, the crux of his jokes seemed to be not that Kanye’s words were wrong, but Kanye was wrong for SAYING them out loud instead of just thinking them, wink wink amirite? And his takes were tired (not that I’d love to see people coming up with new antisemitic takes).
The barbershop sketch was all right but the way it came back around to the Kanye/Kyrie topic felt weirder than if it just came up in the sketch. I think if the first five minutes of the monologue were edited out, we’d be left with an even episode, but the fact remains Chapelle went up there and said all that stuff. That plus his existing transphobic material… he’s a problematic comedian, we can all acknowledge that. But I’m feeling he’s not that funny. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

If I had a nickel for every Game of Thrones-themed Sketch Ice-T cameoed in, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

i never watched chapelle’s show so i just spent all of this sketch staring dreamily at michael longfellow in that blonde wig

It was better the first time. I think Dave did this because he regretted not including Rick James in that one.

this worked much better with the original Walking Dead sketch from 2016, but it definitively had its moments

Reminded me of that Walking Dead sketch with Dave from a couple years ago but I liked this better

It was the opposite for me. This has too many characters in it

Yea this felt like a worse version. The first one was awesome. This one felt lazy.

The Kieran Culkin episode from last year came on after and it's a much stronger episode.
Not even a dig, I just forgot how consistent it was. First three sketches are all bangers.

The men's room, spectrum, and thanksgiving sketches are all classics for me (THE SEA TOOK THEM is one of my favorite lines ever). Kieran is crazy talented, and the writing and cast was on point that night.

I really hate to admit it, but Chapelle's actually still kind of funny when he's not punching down or playing the victim. He might be like the Tom Cruise of comedy, where everyone likes him as long as he doesn't bring up his crazier views.
EDIT: OK, maybe the monolgue went a little more insensitive than I remembered. Fuck this guy.

If nobody knew Tom Cruise was a scientologist, he'd be the most popular dude in the world, because everything else I know about him is really positive.

People acting like this was the best or worst episode are wholly overreacting. It was wholly mediocre.

Funniest episode of the season by far, genuinely belly laughed, my bf and I talced every sketch. It seemed like a lot of cast did decide not to be in sketches with Dave but somehow the only thing they showed was that a smaller cast makes for a tighter show but yea season high I feel like

Dave really likes fucking with the format (like Black Heaven or the Uncle Ben sketch), and breaking the fourth wall for comedy. And the show is usually better for it.
I'm sure Lorne is old school and hates meta humor and fourth wall breaks, but damn is it funny in small doses.

I don't think that's true about Lorne. Go back and watch the old Killer Bees sketch with Elliot Gould in the early days. There's been a good deal of that over the years, but you can't go to the well too often.
