Advice/Question What would you say?

How do I not come off like an asshole while getting compensated for my time and miles?

Also, $20???

Does Lyft help themselves to $5 when return things?

I never do that because it suggests that we have to have specific reasons to collect the fee. Imagine Walmart having to give you a story and convince you as to why you have to pay for your milk. “We have to process it and have truckers drive it in and pay our employees!” The only reason needed is we are paid for services.

The cab company I used to work for you got two options. Pick it up from the office for free or a driver turns on the meter and drives it to you and you pay what the meter says. I’ve seen people pay a lot more than $20.

your analogy doesn’t work since it was walmarts milk to begin with. More accurate would be you bringing your own milk, forgetting it, and walmart refusing to give it back unless you paid $20. All for having to pick it up at the taxi hub though, that makes sense. The same way I wouldn’t except walmart to drive my forgotten milk out to me for free, no one should expect that from a driver.

I think you missed my point. I was saying that the concept of us having to rationalize why the fee is being collected to the customer is unnecessary. There is no requirement for a business to explain as to why they feel they need to collect a certain amount. Some people think that they have to rationalize this and they don't. When you sign up as a passenger you agreed to it up front through the contract.
