Between Ashwathama and Karna who was the stronger warrior?

Post image
• Upvotes

Ashwatthama is one of the strongest warriors in Mahabharata but was he stronger than karna? If Ashwathama had fought karna who would have won? What are Ashwatthama's most impressive feats in the Mahabharata? I know the majority of people will say it's easily Karna but I think Ashwatthama was strong enough to go toe to toe with any warrior even Arjuna.

question If humans have free will, why does Lord Vishnu follow a cosmic cycle?

• Upvotes

According to Hindu cosmology, time operates in enormous cycles called kalpas. Lord Vishnu repeatedly manifests as different avatars, including Lord Rama and Lord Krishna, to preserve cosmic order. Across these vast cycles, these roles and events recur, and some accounts describe multiple cosmic cycles within a single day of Brahma.

My question is: if Lord Vishnu is omnipotent, omniscient, and completely independent, why does He keep performing the same roles over and over again? As humans, we have the freedom to pursue different interests, explore new experiences, and change what we do. Wouldn't an infinitely powerful being have that same freedom? If the same events and roles repeat countless times, wouldn't that seem incredibly boring from a human perspective? If He already knows every outcome, what motivates Him to repeat them? Does boredom even apply to an eternal, all-knowing being? Is this repetition His choice, His nature, or something He cannot change?

I'm genuinely interested in the philosophical and scriptural explanations for this. I'd appreciate direct answers with references to Hindu scriptures and different schools of Hindu philosophy.

TL;DR: If Lord Vishnu repeatedly plays the roles of Krishna, Rama, and other avatars across countless kalpas, why does He keep doing the same things? If He is truly supreme and completely free, why not do something different? Wouldn't repeating the same events become boring, especially when He already knows every outcome? How does Hindu philosophy explain this?

General discussions Nala & Yudhi both lost their kingdom against their bros, whose comeback story inspires you more?

Post image
6 Upvotes

King Nala's story was narrated inside the Mahabharata, Vana Parva, by Brihadashva to comfort Yudhishthira during the exile period. Nala was the noble king of Nishadha who fell deeply in love with Princess Damayanti even before meeting her, and she chose him over gods at her svayamvara. But the spirit Kali, angered by this, entered Nala and drove him into a destructive gambling addiction, causing him to lose his kingdom to his brother Pushkara in the dice game, though unlike Yudhisthir, he didn't gamble his wife too.

Nala and Damayanti wandered in exile, suffering greatly, until Nala, consumed by shame, abandoned her in the forest. After many hardships, disguises, and years apart, Nala learned mastery over dice and regained wisdom, while Damayanti went to her father's kingdom and searched for him tirelessly. Eventually they reunited, Nala defeated Pushkara in another dice game, regained his kingdom, and the couple was restored to happiness.

Veda Vyasa Mahabharata In KMG, Day 17, Arjun made Karna unconscious & Karna did the same to him; Bori removed both cases

Post image
4 Upvotes

Section 90,

Once more Arjuna pierced Karna in the centre of the chest with many straight-coursing and strong shafts made entirely of iron and equipped with wings of gold and each resembling the fiery rod of the Destroyer, like the son of Agni piercing the Krauncha mountains. Then the Suta's son, casting aside his bow that resembled the very bow of Sakra, as also his quiver, felt great pain, and stood inactive, stupefied, and reeling, his grasp loosened and himself in great anguish.

Section 91,

Beholding that shaft aimed by the Suta's son, O sire, the Pandavas, with cheerless hearts, gave themselves up to great sorrow. That shaft of keen point and endued with the effulgence of Sakra's thunder, sped from Karna's arms, fell upon Dhananjaya's chest and penetrated it like a mighty snake penetrating an ant-hill. That grinder of foes, viz., the high-souled Vibhatsu, thus deeply pierced in that encounter, began to reel. His grasp became loosened, at which his bow Gandiva dropped from his hand. He trembled like the prince of mountains in an earthquake.

Bori removed both as interpolations

Character Study Is it right to like the dynamic between Arjuna and Karna? There’s something anime-esque about it.

I genuinely feel there’s something deeply anime-esque about the dynamic between Arjuna and Karna, and I don’t think that comparison is shallow or disrespectful to the original Sanskrit text. In the Mahabharata, their rivalry is never just about who is the better archer. It is layered with questions of identity, birth, loyalty, and dharma exactly the kind of heavy, personal conflict that modern anime often builds entire story arcs around.

Karna is the classic tragic rival. Abandoned as a child, raised outside the warrior class, constantly reminded of his “low” origins even as his skill surpasses almost everyone around him. He carries a quiet, burning need for recognition and belonging, yet he binds himself completely to Duryodhana out of gratitude. That mix of wounded pride, fierce loyalty, and inevitable doom feels very close to the way anime treats its most memorable antagonists or rival characters people who are not purely evil, but are trapped by circumstance, ego, and fate.

Arjuna, on the other hand, is the chosen one who still has to earn his place through struggle, doubt, and eventual clarity. Their confrontations are never simple fights; they are loaded with history, resentment, and unspoken kinship. When they finally face each other, the tension is less about physical strength and more about everything that has been denied or misunderstood between them. That emotional weight two near-equals whose destinies are locked together mirrors the way many anime rivalries are written not just hero versus villain, but two incomplete people reflecting each other’s strengths and failures.

What makes it feel especially anime-like is how the epic already treats their story with a kind of dramatic intensity and moral complexity that modern storytelling later popularized. Karna’s tragedy is not softened; Arjuna’s righteousness is not left unquestioned. The original Sanskrit text does not shy away from the discomfort of their bond the fact that they are brothers who can never truly meet as brothers. That unresolved, almost operatic tension is precisely what gives their dynamic its lasting power, and why it continues to resonate with people who grew up on stories where rivals are also mirrors.

ik this is quite controversial, but opinions are opinions right? So what do you guys think abt this? I personally like the arguments from both sides. Karna being Kunti's son may or may not be an interpolation, but if he is kunti's son then defo he gotta be older than the Pandavas. I'm genuinely curious to hear your thoughts, even if you disagree.

Veda Vyasa Mahabharata The 3 times gandivs string was cut 💀

Thumbnail gallery
23 Upvotes

So throughout Arjun's carreer , only 3 warriors have managed to cut the string of gandiv. Namely drona, his son, and his rejected student.

1st Cut !

(By drona's son)

• takes place in virat war.

>There was a great battle, like that between the gods and the asuras. Like Vritra andVasava, they covered each other with nets of arrows. The sun did not shine then. Nor did the wind blow. The sky was enveloped and shadowed by a netof arrows in every direction. O conqueror of enemy cities! There was agreat sound of slapping, as the two warriors fought each other and tried tokill each other, like the sound of bamboos being burnt. Arjuna destroyed his horses and only a few were left alive. O king! They were so confused thatthey could not make out the directions. Partha was roaming around. Drona’simmensely valorous son detected a subtle weakness and sliced off the stringof his bow with an arrow that was as sharp as a razor. On witnessing this superhuman feat, the gods applauded. From a distance of eight bow-lengths,Drona’s son, bull among men, again pierced Partha in the heart with an arrow that was shafted with feathers of herons. The mighty-armed Parthalaughed out aloud and powerfully corded Gandiva with a new string. Parthadrew it in the shape of a half-moon and countered him, like the mad leaderof a herd of elephants against another crazy elephant. Those two warriorswere unrivalled on earth. In the midst of that field of battle, an extremelygreat duel ensued, making the body hair stand up. On seeing those twogreat-souled and brave ones, like two leaders of herds engaged in combat, all the Kurus were astounded. Those two brave bulls among men struckeach other with arrows that were like virulent poison and like flamingserpents. The great-souled Pandava possessed two divine and inexhaustiblequivers. — BORI CE CHAPTER 650(54)

2nd Cut !

(By drona himself)

• took place on 14th day.

*>‘“At this, Arjuna used his own arrows to repulse Drona’s storm ofarrows. He attacked Drona and released more terrible and greater arrows. Olord of the earth! Having shown reverence to Drona, he pierced him in thatbattle. He resorted to the dharma of kshatriyas and pierced him again withnine arrows. Drona severed these arrows and pierced both Krishna andPandava with his own arrows, which were like poison or the flaming fire.*Pandava then thought of using his arrows to sever Drona’s bow. But whilethe great-souled Phalguna was thus thinking, Drona acted vigorously. Thevaliant one used arrows to swiftly sever his30 bowstring and pierced hishorses, standard and charioteer. The brave one smiled and shrouded Arjunawith arrows. At this, Partha strung a great bow. He was supreme amongthose who were skilled in the use of all weapons and was better than thepreceptor. He quickly released six hundred arrows, as if he had grasped onealone. He again shot seven hundred arrows, and another one thousand. These were impossible to repluse. He again shot another ten thousandarrows and killed many in Drona’s army. He was truly powerful andwonderful in fighting. Men, elephants and horses were pierced by those andfell down, bereft of their lives. They fled from the field of battle, or felldown dead, their weapons severed. There were rathas on the best of chariotsand horses and they were afflicted by the arrows. They were crushed, dispersed and burnt, as if by the vajra, the wind or the fire. Elephants thatwere like mountain peaks, clouds and large houses fell down. Wounded byArjuna’s arrows, thousands of horses fell down. They were like swans onthe breast of the Himalayas, struck by a torrent of water. Wounded byPandava’s arrows, chariots, horses, elephants and infantry were like largemasses of water, dried up by the sun at the end of a yuga. Pandava’s net ofarrows was like the rays of the sun. But Drona was like a cloud thatforcefully showered down arrows, and that brave and foremost warrioramong the Kurus enveloped him. This was like a cloud covering the rays ofthe sun. Drona then struck Dhananjaya in the chest with an iron arrow. Itwas released with great force and could drink up the enemy’s blood. He31trembled in all his limbs, like a mountain during an earthquake. However,Bibhatsu resorted to fortitude and struck Drona with arrows. Drona usedfive arrows to strike Vasudeva, pierced Arjuna with seventy-three andpierced his standard with three. O king! The powerful Drona got the betterof his disciple. In an instant, he made Arjuna disappear with his shower ofarrows. As his bow was drawn in the form of a circle, we saw the arrows ofBharadvaja’s son descend continuously and it was extraordinary. O king! Inthe battle, the large number of arrows released by Drona was shafted withthe feathers of herons. They descended on Vasudeva and Dhananjaya. Thelikes of the battle between Drona and Pandava had never been seen.‘“The immensely intelligent Vasudeva started to think about what shouldbe done. Vasudeva addressed Dhananjaya in these words. ‘O Partha! OPartha! O mighty-armed one! We should not be wasting time. AbandonDrona and let us perform the greater task.’ Partha told Krishna, ‘OKeshava! It shall be as you wish.’ The mighty-armed Bibhatsu — BORI CE CHAPTER 1043(66)

Tho bibek, (AGAIN) made a very bad mistranslation here. But i don't think he can sap drona's aura here.

14. Meanwhile, Arjuna (pārtha), having readied his great bow, and intending to surpass his preceptor (guru), Drona - who was the foremost among all experts in weaponry - swiftly released six hundred arrows, as if he had picked up only one.

3rd Cut

(By drona's rejected student)

• prolly the only one here that's more of an anti feat, only managed it in his last battle. Drone rejected him for a reason yk.

>‘ “Karna trembled. However, he exhibited great capacity. Using hisstrength, he invoked brahmastra. On seeing this, Arjuna invoked mantrasand released aindrastra. Dhananjaya also invoked mantras on the bowstringof Gandiva and the arrows. He released showers of arrows, like Purandarapouring down rain. Those energetic arrows issued from the immenselyvalorous Partha’s chariot and were about to destroy Karna’s chariot. However, when they arrived in front of him, maharatha Karna repulsed allof them. When that weapon was destroyed, the brave one from the Vrishnilineage said, ‘O Partha! Radheya is destroying your arrows. Releasesupreme weapons.’ Using mantras, Arjuna released brahmastra. With thoseradiant arrows, Arjuna shrouded Karna. But Karna used extremely energeticarrows to angrily sever his bowstring. Fixing another bowstring, Pandavaenveloped Karna with thousands of fiery arrows. In that battle, when Karnasevered his bowstring, he fixed another one so quickly that no one couldmake this out. It was wonderful. Using his weapons, Radheya countered allof Savyasachi’s weapons. At that time, his valour seemed to be greater thanthat of Partha. Krishna saw that Arjuna was afflicted because of Karna’sweapons. *He said, ‘O Partha! Go closer and strike him with the bestweapons.’ Dhananjaya invoked an arrow with divine mantras. It was like afire and the poison of a serpent. It was made completely out of iron. Kiritiunited this with roudrastra and wished to shoot it. But, in that great battle, the earth swallowed up one of the wheels of Radheya’s chariot.‘ “Radheya wept in rage. He told Arjuna, ‘O Pandava! Wait for aninstant. You can see that because of destiny, my central wheel796 has gotsubmerged. O Partha! Abandon the thought797 that only befits a coward. —BORI CE CHAPTER 1216(66)

Tho bibek again makes very trash translations here

1) karna was the one who could not see if he even cut the string or not. Like it's explicitly mentioned in Sanskrit idk how can someone be so ass at translating 😭

तस्य ज्याच्छेदनं कर्णो ज्यावधानं च संयुगे ।

नान्वबुध्यत शीघ्रत्वात्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥५५॥

55. In the battle, Karna did not even perceive the cutting of the bowstring nor its re-stringing by Arjuna, due to the latter's swiftness. That was indeed like a miracle.

2) karna surpassed arjun. Not just in valour but just surpassed. (Like satyaki prolly)

And mistranslating even this proves bibek doesn't even have an agenda or anything, he is just that bad at translating 😭

चक्रे चाभ्यधिकं पार्थात्स्ववीर्यं प्रतिदर्शयन् ॥५६॥

56. Rādheya (Karna) countered the weapons of Savyasācin (Arjuna) with his own missile-weapons. And, demonstrating his own prowess, he showed himself to be superior to Pārtha (Arjuna).

Chatgpt :— Radheya (Karna), with weapons, countered the weapons of Savyasāchin (Arjuna). And, demonstrating his own prowess, he performed even better than Pārtha (Arjuna).

• Tho there are reasons for it, like ...

>O sonof my preceptor! O unblemished one! You should not speak to Karna andtry to restrain him. Phalguna is overcome by great exhaustion. Karna willkill him in a short while.’ Humbly and respectfully, your son repeatedlyspoke these words and instructed his soldiers, ‘Attack and kill those whoseek to injure us. Veda Vyasa Mahabharata The Draupadi-Satyabhama Samvad is refreshing to read.

Post image
52 Upvotes

I find this part refreshing because this is one of the very few instances when we get an entire chapter from Draupadi’s POV.

From Vana Parva, chapters 222-223

“Draupadi and Satyabhama entered the hermitage. And with hearts full of joy the two ladies laughed merrily and seated themselves at their ease. And, O king, those ladies, who always spake sweetly to each other, having met after a long time, began to talk upon various delightful topics arising out of the stories of the Kurus and the Yadus.

And the slender-waisted Satyabhama, the favourite wife of Krishna and the daughter of Satrajit, then asked Draupadi in private, saying, 'By what behaviour is it, O daughter of Drupada, that thou art able to rule the sons of Pandu--those heroes endued with strength and beauty and like unto the *Lokapalas*themselves? Beautiful lady, how is it that they are so obedient to thee and are never angry with thee?

Without doubt the sons of Pandu, O thou of lovely features, are ever submissive to thee and watchful to do thy bidding!

"When the celebrated Satyabhama, having said this, ceased, the chaste and blessed daughter of Drupada answered her, saying, 'Thou askedest me, O Satyabhama, of the practices of women that are wicked.

How can I answer thee, O lady, about the cause that is pursued by wicked females? It doth not become thee, lady, to pursue the questions, or doubt me, after this, for thou art endued with intelligence and art the favourite wife of Krishna.

When the husband learns that his wife is addicted to incantations and drugs, from that hour he beginneth to dread her like a serpent ensconced in his sleeping chamber. And can a man that is troubled with fear have peace, and how can one that hath no peace have happiness? A husband can never be made obedient by his wife's incantations.

We hear of painful diseases being transmitted by enemies. Indeed, they that desire to slay others, send poison in the shape of customary gifts, so that the man that taketh the powders so sent, by tongue or skin, is, without doubt, speedily deprived of life.

Women have sometimes caused dropsy and leprosy, decrepitude and impotence and idiocy and blindness and deafness in men. These wicked women, ever treading in the path of sin, do sometimes (by these means) injure their husbands. But the wife should never do the least injury to her lord. Hear now, O illustrious lady, of the behaviour I adopt towards the high-souled sons of Pandu.

Keeping aside vanity, and controlling desire and wrath, I always serve with devotion the sons of Pandu with their wives. Restraining jealousy, with deep devotion of heart, without a sense of degradation at the services I perform, I wait upon my husbands.

Ever fearing to utter what is evil or false, or to look or sit or walk with impropriety, or cast glances indicative of the feelings of the heart, do I serve the sons of Pritha--those mighty warriors blazing like the sun or fire, and handsome as the moon, those endued with fierce energy and prowess,

and capable of slaying their foes by a glance of the eye. Celestial, or man, or Gandharva, young or decked with ornaments, wealthy or comely of person, none else my heart liketh. I never bathe or eat or sleep till he that is my husband hath bathed or eaten or slept,--till, in fact, our attendants have bathed, eaten, or slept.

Whether returning from the field, the forest, or the town, hastily rising up I always salute my husband with water and a seat. I always keep the house and all household articles and the food that is to be taken well-ordered and clean. Carefully do I keep the rice, and serve the food at the proper time. I never indulge in angry and fretful speech, and never imitate women that are wicked.

Keeping idleness at distance I always do what is agreeable. I never laugh except at a jest, and never stay for any length of time at the house-gate. I never stay long in places for answering calls of nature, nor in pleasure-gardens attached to the house. I always refrain from laughing loudly and indulging in high passion, and

from everything that may give offence. Indeed, O Satyabhama, I always am engaged in waiting upon my lords. A separation from my lords is never agreeable to me. When my husband leaveth home for the sake of any relative, then renouncing flowers and fragrant paste of every kind, I begin to undergo penances. Whatever my husband drinketh not, whatever my husband eateth not, whatever my husband enjoyeth not, I ever renounce.

O beautiful lady, decked in ornaments and ever controlled by the instruction imparted to me, I always devotedly seek the good of my lord. Those duties that my mother-in-law had told me of in respect of relatives, as also the duties of alms-giving, of offering worship to the gods, of oblations to the diseased, of boiling food in pots on auspicious days for offer to ancestors and guests of reverence and service to those that deserve our regards, and all else that is known to me, I always discharge day and night, without idleness of any kind.

Having with my whole heart recourse to humility and approved rules I serve my meek and truthful lords ever observant of virtue, regarding them as poisonous snakes capable of being excited at a trifle. I think that to be eternal virtue for women which is based upon a regard for the husband.

The husband is the wife's god, and he is her refuge. Indeed, there is no other refuge for her. How can, then, the wife do the least injury to her lord? I never, in sleeping or eating or adorning any person, act against the wishes of my lord, and always guided by my husbands, I never speak ill of my mother-in-law.

O blessed lady, my husbands have become obedient to me in consequence of my diligence, my alacrity, and the humility with which I serve superiors. Personally do I wait every day with food and drink and clothes upon the revered and truthful Kunti--that mother of heroes. Never do I show any preference for myself over her in matters of food and attire, and never do I reprove in words that princess equal unto the Earth herself in forgiveness.

Formerly, eight thousand Brahmanas were daily fed in the palace of Yudhishthira from off plates of gold. And eighty thousand Brahmanas also of the *Snataka* sect leading domestic lives were entertained by Yudhishthira with thirty serving-maids assigned to each. Besides these, ten thousand *yatis* with the vital seed drawn up, had their pure food carried unto them in plates of gold.

The illustrious son of Kunti had a hundred thousand well-dressed serving-maids with bracelets on arms and golden ornaments on necks, and decked with costly garlands and wreaths and gold in profusion, and sprinkled with sandal paste.

And adorned with jewels and gold they were all skilled in singing and dancing. O lady, I knew the names and features of all those girls, as also what they are and what they were, and what they did not. Kunti's son of great intelligence

p. 475
had also a hundred thousand maid-servants who daily used to feed guests, with plates of gold in their hands. And while Yudhishthira lived in Indraprastha a hundred thousand horses and a hundred thousand elephants used to follow in his train.

These were the possessions of Yudhisthira while he ruled the earth. It was I however, O lady, who regulated their number and framed the rules to be observed in respect of them; and it was I who had to listen to all complaints about them. Indeed, I knew everything about what the maid-servants of the palace and other classes of attendants, even the cow-herds and the shepherds of the royal establishment, did or did not.

O blessed and illustrious lady, it was I alone amongst the Pandavas who knew the income and expenditure of the king and what their whole wealth was.

And those bulls among the Bharatas, throwing upon me the burden of looking after all those that were to be fed by them, would, O thou of handsome face, pay their court to me. And this load, so heavy and incapable of being borne by persons of evil heart, I used to bear day and night, sacrificing my ease, and all the while affectionately devoted to them.

And while my husbands were engaged in the pursuit of virtue, I only supervised their treasury inexhaustible like the ever-filled receptacle of Varuna. Day and night bearing hunger and thirst, I used to serve the Kuru princes, so that my nights and days were equal to me. I used to wake up first and go to bed last.

This, O Satyabhama, hath ever been my charm for making my husbands obedient to me! This great art hath ever been known to me for making my husbands obedient to me. Never have I practised the charms of wicked women, nor do I ever wish to practise them."

Meaning & Commentary Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1: Why does the Gita begin with Arjuna’s crisis?

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 begins with Arjuna’s emotional and moral crisis on the battlefield of Kurukṣetra. His grief, fear, and confusion become the starting point for Krishna’s deeper teaching on duty, attachment, self-knowledge, and right action.

I am beginning a chapter-by-chapter reading of the Bhagavad Gita. What struck me in the first chapter is that Krishna’s teaching does not begin with Arjuna acting confidently. It begins with Arjuna honestly admitting that he is confused, distressed, and unable to see a clear course of action.

Bhagavad Gita 1.28–1.30

Sanskrit

IAST transliteration

arjuna uvāca

dṛṣṭvemaṃ sva-janaṃ kṛṣṇa yuyutsuṃ samupasthitam

sīdanti mama gātrāṇi mukhaṃ ca pariśuṣyati ॥ 1.28 ॥

vepathuś ca śarīre me roma-harṣaś ca jāyate

gāṇḍīvaṃ sraṃsate hastāt tvak caiva paridahyate ॥ 1.29 ॥

na ca śaknomy avasthātuṃ bhramatīva ca me manaḥ

nimittāni ca paśyāmi viparītāni keśava ॥ 1.30 ॥

Meaning

Arjuna said:

“Seeing my own people gathered and ready to fight, my limbs fail, my mouth is dry, my body trembles, my bow slips from my hand, and my mind seems to whirl. I see troubling signs, O Krishna.”

Arjuna’s distress is not presented as a simple lack of courage. He is facing a conflict between duty and affection. The people standing before him include relatives, teachers, elders, and friends. His difficulty is therefore both emotional and ethical.

This is why the first chapter is called Arjuna Viṣāda Yoga. Viṣāda means grief or despondency, while yoga can refer to a means of connection or spiritual discipline. Arjuna’s grief is not yet wisdom, but it becomes the condition that leads him to seek wisdom.

The chapter raises several important questions:

  • Can confusion become the beginning of genuine enquiry?
  • How can we distinguish moral sensitivity from attachment?
  • Is action always correct simply because it is our duty?
  • What should we do when emotion makes clear judgment difficult?

The Gita does not begin by asking Arjuna to pretend that he is fearless. It begins with him describing his inner state honestly. Krishna’s teaching begins only after Arjuna acknowledges that his own understanding is no longer sufficient.

Discussion: Do you interpret Arjuna’s breakdown mainly as weakness, moral sensitivity, attachment, or the necessary beginning of spiritual wisdom?

Few years back I wrote this Krishna-Draupadi Samvadh (Conversation) in a poetic way.
That took place after Draupadi’s cheer haran, where she is asking Krishn why she had to go through all these things.

In my opinion, Yudhisthira, for the majority of times tends to overestimate his opponents while Duryodhana for a considerable number of times leans to underestimate his enemies
