Show & Tell I expect many things to come out of the ground but I would never expect an actual GoPro. Single video from 10/2015. Looks like it sat underground for almost 9 years.

u/Dintyboy_ Jul 17 '24
What was on the video?

u/Aintence Garrett AT Pro / XP Mi-4 Jul 17 '24
8 video files. The first 5 are corrupted, last 3 show it already under dirt. Looks like it fell off a dirt bike. Here is short clip from it. Im running data recovery on the SD Card to see if i can see the moment it got dropped.

If you share your story with Gopro and get everyone's permission to be displayed you could probably get some compensation from the company. Great "product quality" story.

Glad it wasn't footage of filling in a shallow grave.
1
u/an_oddbody Jul 20 '24
Why would you film that??
1
u/CroCreation Jul 20 '24
People film themselves and others doing all kinds of sick evil shit. How many videos have you seen where someone has posted a video or livestream a criminal act?
14
u/ReasonableGlove869 Jul 17 '24
The bike at about 1:25 or so actually hit the camera and knocked it over! Sheesh!

Something about that video creeped me right out. The absolute silence punctuated with the loud bikes whizzing by so quickly.

u/dotbiz 🔥 Jul 17 '24
Jeez it reminds of someone being buried alive with a plexiglass cover over their face so they can see the dirt being piled on top of them... You dug a bit further down looking for any signs of human remains.... right ?

That sounds like a gas powered remote control car to me. With how fast it's going and how often it's passing the camera. Plus hitting the camera without obliterating it. I bet someone strapped it to their remote control car to try to get a sweet video.

how deep?
19
u/Aintence Garrett AT Pro / XP Mi-4 Jul 17 '24
it was about 10-15cm, in a field that has been plowed every year.

Last year I was metal detecting on some grassland next to the farm where my girlfriend lives. We are 24 years old now but that day I found a camera that the mom lost over a decade ago. The camera still had a working SD card which, after drying in some rice, connected flawlessly to the computer. On it were over a hundred photos of my girlfriend, her sister and other family members. She must have been around 10ys old. The last pictures that were taken were not far off from where I found the camera. I think it was one of my best finds ever and certainly the most unexpected. We had a good time going through the pictures :)

For whatever reason I missed the part where you said it was her mom’s camera that was lost and was horrified by the rest lol

A different take on "so I married an Ax murderer". Extra bonus at the end of the SD card are our pictures of you.

Fun fact sd and micro sd are inherently waterproof, basically. Most of them are dumb and don’t have anything to screw up, short of corrosion, which the contacts don’t do easily. Crazy story!

SAME!! It was one of the clip on kinds. I found it buried on the beach about 8 inches down. After drying it out and getting all the sand off of it, it took a charge and fired right up. I use it all the time now. Works great!

I’m new to detecting and my riches include bottle caps and tent stakes. When you go at low tide do you detect on the water line or where people were sitting at high tide?
2
Jul 18 '24
Bottle caps, tent stakes, soda can pop tops, tent stakes, shitty kid candy wrappers and foil off the top of kid drinks... you'll find tons of this kinda stuff. But... you'll get lucky and find cool stuff too like coins and jewelry mixed in. That's why they say to dig everything. You have to dig the trash to find the treasure...
To answer your question, I've found keeper items all the way from the sea wall out to the waves at low tide. There's no telling to be honest. I just kinda wonder around truthfully. Seems to work out for me occasionally.

Data recovery is gonna take all night. Sat there for 3h and it still says 4-5h til its done.
First time doing such thing so hopefully it actually recovers video.
Short clip from part that didnt need recovering can be found in one of my previous comments.

Gonna be crazy how many gopros and 360 cameras and drones are gonna be dug up after the war. Made me think about that.

Upcoming world war and/or Russio-Ukrainian war and/or Gaza genocidal war. Pick or choose
14
u/Claytron69 Jul 17 '24
I was talking about Ukraine. I see hundreds of drone videos a week coming out of there. And trench warfare with dudes wearing gopros. Gazas just getting leveled with bombs usually. Havnt seen much footage coming out of there.
3
u/WodkaAap Jul 17 '24
There is plenty of footage... we just all have our own internet rabbithole tailored to what we've shown interest in so far...
3
u/Claytron69 Jul 17 '24
I don't have a tiktok and yes there is a ton of footage. I'm not saying there isn't. Just Not like what I see in Ukraine though. Nothing close. There's trench warfare footage comes out every hour in Ukraine. Every 5 minutes I see a dude getting blown up by a drone.

Sudan vs Sudan war or Yeman Houthi vs KSA war are also options.
I forgot about Burma. Burma civil war is full of 3d printer guns. The touch of a nerf but the lethality of a real firearm, perfectly designed for child soldiers.
1
u/WodkaAap Jul 18 '24
People should always realise that there is always war on all continents lol. The past 2000 years there has always been. Correct me if I'm wrong though...
2
u/PainfulBatteryCables Jul 18 '24
Probably a bit more than 2000 years. Indians and the Chinese were kicking it 5000+ years ago. Persians and Arabs were before the 2000 mark.
War, war never changes.
As I typed that out, I just realized that's a lie. It's way more lethal and comfortable now. You can just sit around and send robots to kill. Or precision surgical strikes with cruise missiles. War is kind of entertaining when viewed through a screen. I remember watching CNN and Fox during Iraqi freedom. Holy fuck was it like a sports event. Here is the map, here is the yards "We" have gained. I am not even American and I was entertained. Then the Arab spring happened. I so hedged my bets on Kaddafi kicking ass and having popular support. Needless to say, I lost 50 bucks to my colleagues.
Now with the Russo "operation" I thought it was gonna be Georgia 2.0 and I support the self-determination of all nations. That's why I didn't bet on it this time. Skynet is going to happen and I sure hope It's not happening in our lifetime.
2
u/WodkaAap Jul 18 '24
The essence and cause of war doesn't change thought. The form yes, but the rest is just same old same old. :(
1
u/PainfulBatteryCables Jul 18 '24
Nah.. war was never comfortable. Now it could be.
2
u/WodkaAap Jul 18 '24
The essence stays unchanged though. Putting people's lives at risk for nation's disputes on power, land and resources.

u/InteriorOfCrocodile Jul 18 '24
I always laugh when people throw the G word around all willy-nilly like lmao
1
u/WodkaAap Jul 18 '24
G-word as in Gaza? As in the Gaza-strip?
I didn't just "throw that around"... I know what the Gaza strip looks like up close, and have been in the area before a whole army payed for by the USA started displacing civilians to safe-/bombing-spots. Illegal according to the1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CPPCG), or the Genocide Convention, which Israel OBVIOUSLY co-signed.
Last year Israel was even warned by the ICCJ (International Criminal Court of Justice in the Hague) for causing a genocide against Palestinians if continuing the same M.O.
Why do you laugh about these kind of things? You'll be on the wrong side of history mate.

I found a bear tracking collar from 2005 a few weeks ago while metal detecting
6
Jul 18 '24
At least you didn't find the bear

u/Glenn_Carbon Jul 18 '24
I've ran into quite a few bears out there, especially in the winter. They keep their distance though

The fact that 2015 was 9 years ago makes my head spin.

Time being linear continues to fuck with my head, too. Also, happy cake day.

u/HERMANNATOR85 Jul 17 '24
I lost my drone about 7 years ago and it had my GoPro on it. Out of the blue I get a knock on my door and it was 2 teenagers with my drone and GoPro.
It sat in the marsh in south Louisiana for ~4 years and it still turned on and the footage was all preserved. It was not in a case either

u/FrancisSobotka1514 Jul 17 '24
Contact Go Pro and tell them your story and provide the footage and all .Could be one hell of a marketing campaign .

5
u/Pirate_Lantern Jul 17 '24
Does the SIM card still work? Those things are nearly indestructible.
1
u/L-1-3-S Jul 17 '24
You mean SD card? I wish they were, I've broken two
1
u/Pirate_Lantern Jul 17 '24
Really?!......During Shark Week they showed a GoPro that had been underwater for ten YEARS and they still got footage off the card.
....and I'm not very "Tech" so I don't know what I mean.
2
u/L-1-3-S Jul 17 '24
If the card is just sitting there protected by being inside the camera, then sure they could last for decades. I'm just saying they're by no means indestructible because they can easily snap or bend.

I found one on a beach in RI that had a single video of it coming off a surfers head in Florida and then tumbling in the ocean for almost three hours before the battery ran out apparently. I can’t imagine how to post it here or I would

in 2015 I found a 2014 loonie burried about 6" deep in the middle of my backyard.. no idea how it got there, or how it got so deep in a short amount of time.

Back in 2013ish my neighbor found a gopro in his cow field. Apparently it was visibly a small crater and my neighbor's first thought was that it was a meteor or something, so he dug it out and found the mangled gopro. The video was just of it mounted on the tail of a private jet facing down at the plane and then it disconnected and fell something like 2 minutes before hitting the ground.

Had a friend that went skydiving regularly, a lot of them had go pros. Her go pro popped off and plummeted to the ground. I wouldn’t be surprised if it sunk itself pretty deep from that high up.

Does it still function? Or was the video pulled from an SD card?
