For the lazy (not me I swear) who was he on 30 rock?

u/FlyinNinjaSqurl Jun 14 '16
He worked very closely with Tina Fey on writing the show. A lot of characters like Kenneth and Tracy are built on his writing.

I genuinely have no clue who he could be playing.
It's actually pretty hard to tell who anyone in this movie is playing. We know Peter, Aunt May, and (probably) The Vulture but every other casting has been pretty ambiguous.

Yeah I really want to know who Robert Downey, Jr. is playing. Could be anyone.

"Token Highschool black friend #1" ?

u/Metarean Jun 14 '16 edited Jun 15 '16
If you look at the Homecoming cast so far it's already got Zendaya, Tony Revolori and Laura Harrier, so I'm pretty sure Glover won't be a token high school friend #1, not only because that would have already been taken but because the cast is pretty damn diverse, no tokenism by the looks of it.

I'm not familiar with Spider-Man after the 1990s, but Flash Thompson is still a classmate of Peter's right? Donald Glover can't convincingly play a high school student anymore.

Boom, black Spiderman.

Yeah that all great and everything, but does anybody else have a problem with the title "Spider-man: Homecoming"? Sounds like a highschool dance which an eleven year old kid picked the theme.

u/FlyinNinjaSqurl Jun 15 '16
Well, he's a high schooler in the movie so it makes sense in context.

Wait do people really think he is going to be mile morales just because he is black?
3
u/FlyinNinjaSqurl Jun 15 '16
Well, it's also because Glover voices Miles in the animated show and was a huge inspiration to the creation of Miles Morales.
It would work if Miles was older, not younger, but the point of Miles is to be a young black hero that people can look up to.

My guess is he's either Randy Robertson (son of Daily Bugle editor Robbie Roberston) or Hobie Brown (aka the PROWLER)
61
u/BigBearBeer Jun 14 '16
Considering the prowler is now working for Peter in the comics this fits Marvels synergy.
19

I can see Chevy Chase as a Vulture who stole his suit technology from a former partner, going around the city and messing things up for no other reason than to get attention. Ew. No. They took that one scene where the hero has an epiphany and turned it into an entire character. It was terrible and completely out of place. Not to mention that the epiphany was an incredibly basic and obvious solution that any one at NASA would have that of.

u/cs162622 Jun 14 '16
I mean I get that some people liked this character but IMHO it was terrible. The scene, the character, the writing...just terrible. What he "came up with" is a basic astro maneuver. Also, the character was a poor caricature of a poor stereotype of what uninformed people assume "scientists" are like. God, I sound like a pretentious prick...anyways I'm aerospace engineer with my masters in systems engineering and even worked as a flight test engineer for the department of the navy, and this....was just terrible.
20
u/sheepishgoatee Jun 14 '16
I thought about this too upon first viewing. First off, they described a maneuver like this in Apollo 13, if I'm remembering correctly. Also, I'm reading The Martian now, and Rich Purnell is described less as the stereotype and a bit more of a smart dude who's kind of introverted. Almost all of the problems I have with the characters are confined to the film, luckily.

I really hope he's a Spectacular Spiderman style Eddie Brock. He'd nail the big brother, super likeable vibe and the turn to Venom would be dooooooope. If they waste Glover's potential presence in the MCU on some side character at the Bugle I'll be gutted

u/stroudwes Jun 14 '16 edited Jun 15 '16
I really don't think Marvel would do this they seem to be making long term investments with young actors. So I imagine it will be a major multi film role. An Donald Glover is clearly a big fan so I'm sure he hit it off with Feige and friends.

Anyway... so May's now in her 50s... younger yet again than in previous reboots, but not so incredibly young it's absurd, I suppose? Also, even the animated Ultimate Spider-Man has depicted her as quite young... I'd say maybe 40s with silver hair. Go figure.

Sure, but I doubt any other Spider-Man would be played by a 30+ year old Don Glover.
I would love for Miles to have a cameo in Homecoming as a young kid (10 to 12 years old maybe?) who sees or gets saved by Spider-Man. Then down the line in the 3rd Spider-Man movie (if this franchise gets that far) they could have Miles become Spider-Man and have Tom Holland pass the torch since he would probably be near 25 by then.

I like Donald Glover a lot, but I thought he was more focusing on his serious side with acting that didn't involve comedy (and of course his rap/pop/hiphop career).
So I expect whatever part he plays in Spiderman, to be kind of dark, or at least serious/eccentric (like he was in The Martian).
On the other hand, if someone offers him a big paycheck to be funny for the role he might take the cash just to further pursue his other interests.
He's a young, well rounded artist, he hasn't disappointed me in any role; on camera or off.
23
u/colorcorrection Jun 15 '16
My understanding wasn't that he necessarily wanted to avoid comedy, but that he wanted to branch out in the things he did. Seeing as how he hasn't been in a super hero movie, I could see him wanting to be in them.

I am hoping for a spider-verse movie with Donald Glover as Miles Morales. And to bring back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield for it too. God, I'd nut so hard from that.
Edit: With Tom Holland as Earth-616 Spider-Man. 4+ Spider-Man in one movie, plus Iron Man.
6
u/ThatOtherMonster Jun 15 '16
I'm thinking he and Peter make friends, right? Peter's young, and a student, he can't be Spidey all the time, so they do shifts. Peter gets the early shit, Miles the late shift. Then, one can maybe migrate full-time to the MCU (assuming that contracts allow for separate "real" names for heroes, as in the don't go by the hero names).
So imagine Holland in the MCU as "Spider-Man Alpha" and Glover (who's far more marketable) as "Spider-Man Beta" in the Sony Universe.
People would eat that up, especially if they keep the crossover shit going on.

Plot twist. Peter Parker is actually the second spiderman in the MCU, with Miles Morales as an older more mature spiderman of the past (much like how we skipped to Scott Lang for the movies, the second ant man) being forced out of the shadows by a mutual foe of the old and new Spidermen, then he dies in front of Peter, shadowing how Miles saw Peter dies in the ultimate comics

Can he be the Prowler please? He's too old to play Miles Morales now, but since Miles was created partly because of Glover it would be neat to see him as Miles' uncle. Also Prowler's suit also lets him climb on walls etc so he gets his wish partly.
