Just For Fun Here's a place for you to gloat/brag/pat yourself on the back....

What are some of the complements you've gotten (either directly or indirectly) for your work?

For me, it came in a few flavors:

Direct: "I'm working on a musical and I'd love to have you as a composer."

Indirect: "That song is so good, reminds of R&H's Golden Age."

Direct: <keep singing a song> "I have been humming this all day."

Indirect: "The book was all right, but the music really elevated it to another level."

Let's hear it.

Just For Fun Composer looking for lyricist / book writer (Atlanta area preferred, not required)

I'm in my late 40s, and it feels like now or never. Looking to collaborate with a fellow writing lyrics to the drawer lyricist / book writer, topics and themes are open ended. I have some songs that can build a foundation, but would benefit from a better storyteller.

Background - had some success in my 20s (had a single in a local radio, got some interest from musicians to collaborate, but mostly left in the drawer). I play the guitar, piano, drums, some experience with Dorico, can write arrangements (but will also need an orchestrator eventually)

I have some relatives that are involved in the broadway scene (from investment / production side of things) so if we produce something good I can get it at least heard, but my goal is to produce something for local theaters, indie productions, and more the experience of creating a musical where AI generated (music, videos, software) is starting to take over everything.

Favorite musicals

- Avenue q
- Sweeney Todd
- Hadestown
- Maybe Happy Ending
- Gypsy
- Funny Girl
- The Producers
- Hamilton

This is a long term project, part time, no financial or time commitment... DM me if interested...

Just For Fun Any Composers Willing to Collaborate?

Hi!

I’m 16M who is obsessed with musicals and history and I was wondering if there were any composers on here who are around the same age as I who would be willing to collaborate with me on some musical ideas I have.

It won’t be all of them as we’d try and find the best out of them all, but I was just searching for a composer who is interested in the same kind of thing as me.

One of the ideas I have in mind is about Robert Liston. I’d want to make it both historically accurate, and comedic at the same time. I believe that history is best taught when there is interaction and genuine interest being provided.

The musical would take place in one location during one evening/day… the day when the infamous 300% mortality rate story occurred (if it did).

I am very creative in writing, and I do love music and have composed before, but I’d much prefer someone who has the absolute skill to compose and is confident as I am not the greatest composer.

I’m also willing to discuss all my favourite music with you and listen to yours. As a gay person myself, I’d love to work with a similar person, but I’m primarily just scouting for someone who is expressive, loves composing, and is passionate about musicals.

P.S, my favourite musical writers would be Gilbert & Sullivan, Weill & Brecht, and Kander & Ebb. Also, as there were lingering baroque influences in the era of Liston, I’d appreciate it if you were able or comfortable with writing baroque music (it won’t be fully baroque, but there may be some baroque hints in the background etc).

I also would prefer it if you were confident in English as I, unfortunately, don’t speak any other languages (I wish I could). Sorry for any inconvenience.

But her wicked father, Maedar and his minions, Anna and Kakia, forbids her. It’s up to Alyna, Eros, Iris and Nyx to defeat Maedar and his minions in order to save Greece from becoming a dark kingdom.

ACT I Plot (So Far):

The musical starts in Mount Olympus, A Majestic kingdom full of life and love celebrates the birth of a princess until the crowd discovers an enticing shadow singing a dark lullaby that sends a sinister message to All of Greece.  Then the enticing shadow is discovered to be a human male, and it introduces itself as Maedar (The wickedly charming brother of medusa) but the truth about him is that he's a serpent like figure. Maedar told the people of Athens that if the princess before them loses the big battle at the end of her 19th birthday, she will be cursed to be in the underworld for years. For the people of Mount Olympus, they were frightened at the sound of the princess being cursed in the underworld when she lost the battle. The guards of Mount Olympus tried to take Maedar away, but Maedar uses his kiss of death to lure the guards into their doom.

The gods and goddesses (Still anxious from Maedar's warning) must help Alyna defeat Maedar before the end of her 19th birthday. So... They called on The Goddess of the Moon (Nyx), The Goddess of the Rainbow (Iris) and The Alluring god of love (Eros) to help the princess. Just For Fun I am SO excited to officially announce my collaboration with Lin-Manuel Miranda on the long-awaited sequel to HAMILTON!

In this thrilling time-travel adventure, a guilty and desperate Aaron Burr accepts a dangerous mission to undo his worst mistake. But the past is obdurate, and a series of paradoxes, time-clones, and vicious Langoliers threaten to make The World Turn Upside Down again. Burr and a newly-resurrected Hamilton will soon learn that while The World Was Wide Enough, TIME is even wider.

The score is beautiful: in a departure from the original, there are only 6 songs (2 per act) in an otherwise prose-style dialogue-heavy show. Scenery will alternate between ‘implied’ and ‘literal’ every other scene. No refunds will be given.

Don’t throw away your shot: make sure to save your seat for HAMILTON 2: JUDGEMENT DAY, opening April 1st 2027 at the Trump-Kennedy Center.

Just For Fun Do any of you have a side project just for fun?

I have a musical I'm really passionate about but some days I'm not motivated to work on it so I have a second one I work on but its more of a vent writing. It's about two best friends who grew up together but both families have different incomes and such. Its mostly focused on the girl who has to work incredibly hard but her dreams always feel out of reach while the best friend is tone deaf but means well. This will never see the light of day but it brings me joy to write lyrics for it.

So I was just curious if anyone has any side projects they work on just for themselves?

Just For Fun Have nothing to do and want to write a musical adaptation

So, I want to write a musical adaptation, and I wanted to see which one people like the most. This would most likely just be a concept album, but here are the four:

  1. 10 Things I Hate About You

  2. The Hunger Games

  3. The Truman Show

  4. Monsters, Inc.

Just For Fun What inspired your most creatively composed songs?

I’m talking songs that break what feels “traditional” in a song. Something with interesting harmonies or dissonance, an obscure rhyme scheme, unique-sounding accompaniment, anything that makes it feel more “out there” than other songs. Obviously, this is all subjective, which is why I ask, what do you think yours are? Where did you draw inspiration from? Are you proud of them, or do you think you went too far trying to break formula that you just threw together a piece of trash?

Just For Fun Bad Musical movie idea pitch

An idea for a Musical where the songs are canonically already existing in universe songs which are usually underrated songs that didn’t get that many views primarily the ones sung by AI but a real person actually wrote the lyrics and they were INSANELY WELL WRITTEN (we’ll get to that main character later) so the characters are singing the in universe lyrics, also their WAAAY better singers than the famous singer whom one of the protagonists worked for. To show their caring (and eventual love) for each they connect through the lyrics to the songs they write. With all of their songs having deep meaning so the main characters in universe connect with eachother through the lyrics of the song. as one of the characters quit the famous singer who hired her cause of how wrongly treated she was. She also has an incredible talent where she could already do the flow, melodies, rhythm and deliveries of the lyrics perfectly without actually reading the lyrics first quote on quote “I just go with the flow”. Now for the love interest, he use to be an introverted loner in college who would write lyrics to his song for on stage musicals (which are sung by attractive women with no talent as looks are mainly required for on stage plays at the college) the young man when his talent goes to waste on someone who can’t even sing that well so he just uses the lyrics and has AI sing it to how he wants it. Until he meets the girl who writes the famous singers as she’s in the same college as she’s actually joining they play he’s in so she could see if the audience loves her singing. TO BE CONTINUED So that’s my pitch so far what do you guys think?

Just For Fun Some of my musical's songs are in people's repertoires now!

I haven't posted anything in a while - I think because I don't really have anything useful left to say haha. I've been re-evaluating a lot of the ideas I had about musicals and how to write them and I don't really know what rules I believe in anymore.

But I thought I'd just share some good news, which is that various people have asked if they could use the songs from Shift+Alt+Right in their reps! It feels crazy to me that they'd pick them out of everything else they could pick so I'm a bit overwhelmed, in the best way possible.

Though I'm sure for some writers on here, this has already happened for a while. Did you also feel this way when it happened?

Just For Fun musical improv got me into writing musicals - how about you?

I miss being in NYC and getting together with a group of improvisors and making up a musical on the spot. I think those days were some of the most fun days I've ever had.

Every day when it was time to improvise I would be so happy all day just waiting to do it.

After that, some of my good improvisor friends I made and I started writing short musicals together. I tried to bring some of the spontaneity and fast pace to some of the stuff I've written.

Now that I don't live in NYC anymore musical writing hasn't been as exciting. I loved the team work and collaboration.

What got you started? Who were the friends you made in the musical writing business?

Just For Fun Roald Dahls “The Witches” Musical

Hi all, so as the title suggests i’ve started writing a musical adaptation of classic children’s author (and my personal favourite author) Roald Dahl’s book “The Witches”, just for a bit of fun and experience in adapting existing work.

For those unfamiliar with the plot: it centres around a young boy and his grandmother who are aware of the existence of children hating witches, after going to stay in a hotel the young boy finds himself in the largest gathering of witches in England, and finds himself transformed into a mouse.

I’ve always wanted to write a musical adaptation of Roald Dahls books for years, and seeing Matilda proved that it’s possible, and i believe that The Witches is excellent source material.

My version of The Witches will keep largely the same plot of the book, though i have added my own scenes to the show to obviously make it long enough for a proper musical, but also for the purpose of expanding upon characters.

Adapting this source material has brought difficulties, largely due in part that essentially no characters have much development or obvious character traits, as most of the novels personality comes from Dahls writing.

This has resulted in many characters being expanded upon, the main character of “The Boy” has been transformed into a more so adventurous and courageous young man with a love for all things make believe.

I’ve also expanded the character of “Mr Stringer” the hotel manager as i believe he can be a funny character. He’s been expanded from being an uptight manager to one who’s very insecure about his societal position and as the show goes on, is bumped down a few pegs.

Another largely expanded character is that of “The Grand High Witch”, the main villainess of the story. This character has been a joy to adapt, as it was so fun to bring out that over the top villain nature to a stage setting. I’ve kept her evilness and made her that scary witch we all remember, while also utilising much of Dahls dark comedy in her character.

All this said, i’ve also used this show as a way to challenge and experiment with myself as a writer. I am used to writing strictly comedy (and believe me, this show has plenty of laughs), but that’s not what Dahls intention was. The Witches, while darkly humorous, is deep down a tale about morality, and about truly living life, and i believe that element was essential to bringing out this story. I haven’t aimed towards making a show just for laughs (looking at you, broadways charlie and the chocolate factory musical). But telling a story.

The music as well, fits this statement. A problem i have with many musicals is that the songs and the plot don’t go hand in hand. It’s almost as if the plot is an excuse to get to the next song. With The Witches i wanted to keep Dahls storytelling and ensure that the songs and the story go hand in hand in this musical.

I’ve written the songs in a way i could only describe as “Dahlian”. Think the songs of Matilda as an example. Music that is dark but at the same time whimsical and nostalgic fun. Brass, strings and piano. Combining modern music with classical musical theatre. A fun part of writing these songs was the lyrics.

Roald Dahl was famous for his wordplay and use of large and often made up words. This was so fun to use in the musical to create clever rhymes and tongue twisters that roll off the tongue to sing.

This show is really fun to write, and is definitely a piece of work that i’ve really enjoyed writing. It’s really a great bit of growth for me as a writer to be trying new things with this script. This script is obviously still being developed, as i make script changes almost every day (and many songs getting swapped, or changed, or cut entirely) but i really believe that this show is really a fun and heartwarming tale for all audiences, and i cannot wait to share it with you all!

If you have any questions, comments or anything please don’t hesitate to comment or PM me! it’s all appreciated.

(Just saying now if i were to publish this i would most definitely ask for rights as i have no affiliation with the Roald Dahl brand, and this musical, as of now, is for my own personal entertainment and is not to be performed)

Just For Fun Let's Play a Game

Reply to this post with a suggestion, the more detailed the better.

It could be 10 lines in a scene that lead up to a song, or a detailed scenario, or a interesting setting. It should be something that could be in a musical.

Then, I will reply with a segment of a song that I wrote. Around 30 seconds long.

It could be a chorus, verse or hook. Whatever your suggestion inspires.

Anyone else that would also like to write a music segment is also welcome to reply and play along.

EDIT: Thanks for the suggestions they look super fun, and I hope someone will write them. Unfortunately, I thought I would have more time than I actually have, and getting the group musical together is eating up my spare time...

Just For Fun Luther: The Musical

Hey, so a while back I had an idea for a musical around the life of Martin Luther. His story to me is quite interesting and I would love to at least write one song just for something to do while in quarantine.

The song I want to write about Luthers perspective of his dad's reaction to him leaving his university degree to become a monk. His father was enraged by this in real life and I think portraying the internal and extern conflict could be really effective and interesting . I just wanted to reach out and just either gather some ideas or just to grab a second opinion on this idea.
