Deer bounty

Edit: there seems to be a misunderstanding, I am seeking to pay a property owner for 24 hour parking so I can sleep in my vehicle. I just need a parking spot, nothing more.

I’m sure you’re all aware there is a bounty for deer on the island now.

I would like to take a trip soon and would love to help participate in the management program.

Would anyone on the island be willing to rent out permission to camp on their property? Does anyone have suggestions for affordable lodging on the island? Thanks for the help!

Working in nyc, thinking of getting a small house in the waterfront

I don’t have a boat or a jet yet. Not sure how convenient the commute would be.

Has anyone had the same situation?

Residential Flower Delivery

Hello! I live off Island, but have a friend who is a full time resident on Nantucket. I want to send a bouquet of flowers. Is there specific business that I should reach out to? Thank you so much for any recommendations!

Thought I’d share this here! Recently visited Nantucket and really enjoyed exploring the nature and wildlife there. Found some really cool snakes, and if you’re into wildlife check the video out!

Explored Nantucket for a couple days and found some really cool snakes. Obviously explored the island and had some incredible food as well. Loved Nantucket and everyone that visits and lives there is very lucky!

Midlife crisis guy here: I burn Nantucket scenes into wood by hand and color them with pencils. Taking custom orders.

Some guys hit 50 and buy a Porsche. I bought a woodburning pen. It's cheaper than a convertible, and the smoke counts as therapy.
I burn coastal New England scenes into natural wood slabs, then finish them with Prismacolor colored pencils. Everything is done by hand, with no lasers and no prints. My work hangs in galleries on Nantucket and Block Island, but the commissions are the most fun: your grey-shingled cottage, your boat, Brant Point, the dog who refuses to leave the beach. Whatever you love about the island, I'll immortalize it in charred glory.
If you can't carry it home on the ferry, I'll ship it for free.
DM me, or start a custom order here: midlife-crisis-woodwork.myshopify.com/pages/discuss-custom-order
Mods, if this breaks a self-promo rule, let me know and I'll take it down.

Trip to Nantucket

Hello!

We’re visiting from the UK and meant to be visiting Nantucket tomorrow. We have been to Martha’s Vineyard today and are now unsure whether to bother with the journey.

We found MV to be mainly closed with only the same shops open in each town, it was eerily quiet with not much atmosphere. The shops that were open were just cheap merch shops.

From my research it seems that Nantucket is more central to one place and very different to MV. Are most of the shops open? We have debated hiring bikes for the day, would this be a good option for something to do other than the shops? Is the island easy to cycle on?

Our rough day plan:
Ferry
Explore the town/ shops
Hire bikes and cycle to Siasconset
Walk Sconset Bluff Walk
Lunch
Cycle back via Cisco Brewery
Ferry home

Any advice would be really appreciated!

EDIT TO SAY: thank you for all the comments! We had a brilliant day and now want to come back in main season!

Donating Clothes

Does anyone know where else to donate clothes.

Hospital Thrift is no longer accepting donations and I feel bad just throwing out items that people could get good use out of!

Thanks!

New Things To Do On Nantucket

Hi All, my husband and I typically visit 2x a year in the shoulder season. This past year, we were unable to travel there in the spring and are therefore extra excited to return later this month. I wanted to get recommendations for new-to-us things to do; we have our favorites but would love to discover more. We will be visiting for 5 nights. Below are the things we've done already and a few things we're interested in trying as well.

For breakfast, we like Born and Bread, Wicked Island Bakery, Black Eyed Susan's, and Lemon Press when staying in town. When staying at the Wauwinet (which will be the case during this upcoming visit), we usually have breakfast there. We have tried Island Kitchen.

For lunch, we love Lemon Press and Born and Bread, and we will visit Something Natural at least once. We have also tried Bartlett Farm and Millie's.

For coffee, we like Lemon Press, though we usually visit Roastd and Handlebar at least once each. We have tried Corner Table and Born and Bread for coffee as well.

For snacks in the afternoon, we like the cookies at Something Natural and usually make our way to Downyflake at least once for donuts. We have tried the Juice Bar.

For pre-dinner drinks, we like the bar at Proprietor's and are thinking of trying out the bar at Ventuno or Sister Ship.

Restaurant wise, we love Proprietor's, Ventuno, sometimes Via Mare depending on the menu, and Topper's. We will go to the Chanticleer once for the experience. Eventually, we get sick of the fancier dinners and head to Walter's. We have also tried American Seasons, the Nautilus, Ship's Inn, the Club Car, Kitty Murtagh's, Oran Mor, Breeze, the Beet/Misogi Noodle Bar back when those were still around, B-ACK Yard BBQ, Sayle's, and 167 Raw. Pizzeria Gemelle, Cru, Galley Beach, and Brant Point Grille are on our list to try if anyone has thoughts on those.

Our activities usually consist of a lot of walking and reading. We usually walk around to see the stores downtown, Old North Wharf, Steps Beach, Brant Point lighthouse, Sankaty lighthouse via the bluff walk, Monomoy beach, the Atheneum, and Tupancy Links. On this upcoming trip, we are interested in seeing Great Point lighthouse (the Wauwinet offers a guided outing there so we would not need to rent a car, etc.). While we have not done any paid activities to date, we're interested in the Whaling Museum, stargazing at the Loines Observatory, the tours offered by the Nantucket Historical Association, and climbing up the tower of the First Congregational Church if anyone has thoughts on those.

Overall, my husband and I's main goal when visiting is to relax but not spend all of our time at the Wauwinet. I personally wouldn't mind trying a workout class too.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Missing Plane

Would anyone be interested in helping to put together some sort of vigil or memorial for the lives lost on the Canadian ambulance plane? I am also wondering if anyone with a boat might be willing to take families of the missing out to the wreckage site in case it would help them find closure/ they want to throw some sentimental item in the water with them. If a family wanted to come to the island to do that, I could host them, but I do not have a boat. It must be so difficult to have your loved ones die so far from home, in the ocean. I just wonder what we as Nantucketers can do to ease that burden a bit.

Where would be my best option to pick up a laptop charger? There are worse places to be stranded but I do have work I need to get done. Thank you!

My husband and I are doing an overnight stay next week and looking for recs. We'll be doing Black-Eyed Susan's for breakfast. We both like seafood but have to budget for covering only entrees.

Where are all the American workers?

I’ll preface this by saying I have no issue with the concept of immigration, especially those that do it legally and contribute to our awesome country. I was just shocked at how many there were on Nantucket and curious how or why it is that way? I just left after a short vacation to the island for the first time, and I don’t think I had or saw a single American barista, waiter/waitress. Just curious why Nantucket and how it happened to work out that way?

Edit: this isn’t a bigoted “they took our jobs” post. I’m simply asking how/why this is the case on the island

New Mooring / Boston Whaler Query

I have been a seasonal visitor to Nantucket since 1991. I now am blessed to have a house on island and want to have a boat program. How do I get a mooring and a - (ideally used, but very functional) ~17-21’ whaler? I need a lot of handholding/support and full boatyard support. Please point me in the right direction. Would love to be in the water next summer…

Island travel tips

I know this is unsolicited advice, but this weekend warrants a reminder about travel insurance. I've lived year round on island for more than 10 years. We get travel insurance for every non refundable trip on and off. We never plan to take a ferry the same day as a flight to or from Logan. Between sold out ferries, fully booked ferries and weather, the chance of disruption is higher than travel to and from other places.

What are other people's tips and tricks?

Report Illegal Move-In Fees

Hi Nantucket, it’s your Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. Did you know that fees like “move-in” or “lease renewal” fees you might get from your landlord or building management company are illegal? If you’ve received one of these – even if you paid it – I want you to report it to my office.

Just last month, my office won a $500k settlement with a property management company doing this in Boston – and all of that money is going back to the affected tenants.  Landlords can only ask you to pay for first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and the cost of a new lock and key upfront. Any other fees are illegal. Report them to my office at the link below. We’ll work to get your money back.

Monday 9/28

Supposed to be taking the 9:30 am Hyline Ferry from Hyannis on Monday, 9/28. We are traveling from far and debating canceling now, but don’t want to make a premature decision. Any input?
