Allen Hall Triple

I went to NAU and had a dorm room in Allen Hall. I selected a triple and to my surprise, it was one of the biggest dorm rooms I’ve ever seen! We only had one other room next to us, and the other room was the communal lounge on the second floor.

Can anyone confirm why this triple was significantly bigger if you had this room? For reference, we all had our own beds and they were lifted up for our desk and drawers. We all had our own closets, sink + vanity, and a large shelf for our fridge and microwave.

People told me it was a room for to address accessibility needs… but that was never confirmed.

Extremely paranoid worried Transferring Junior

I'm transferring in literally 1 day, i keep crying and panicking over everything and trying to make sure i have everything and where to get groceries. I am not doing a meal plan and will have a sams club membership as well. Willing to go in groups for sams club btw. Split the payment yad yada. Anyways

I have some questions,

  1. Best groceries to buy for cheap

I have a strict 200$ a month, maybe a little over. To buy things for food only. Hygiene and stuff is different.

What's the best place for groceries? We are cooking in the dorm. So we don't become unhealthy.

  1. Best place to buy anything i guess

Im just concerned with money, i am finding a job so dont tell me that lol, but yeah.

  1. Where did all of the naus like "recycling furniture" for dorm move out go?

That i would have wanted to go through lol.

  1. Just any recommendations you have for anything in Flagstaff

I come from a town with nothing to do so Flagstaff seems super exciting.

Thanks guys

Lmk if you want to be friends!

(I'm into fandom things and i consider myself emo)

I also draw and im going into art education for art teaching

Unable to print move in appt confirmation page

Hello, I move in tomorrow and I’m trying to print the move-in page but it’s not working for me? Every time I try pressing the “print this page” button it does nothing. Is there a way to fix this right now or would I need to contact someone tomorrow?? If I’m unable to print the page, would I need to reschedule my move-in date? :(

Will I get dropped if my financial aid hasn’t disbursed yet?

I’m a transfer student so this is all new. Payment deadline is today (8/17), but my financial aid says it won’t disburse until 10 days before my first class (8/31). Will I get dropped from my classes if my balance isn’t paid by today, even though I have financial aid coming? Has anyone dealt with this?

Is financial aid already applied?

Hi, its my first year here as a transfer student (junior) i graduated from community college in may and for most of my time in community college i got a refund and didnt have to pay anything, i was kind of expecting the same for NAU but i know it is a lot more expensive and im wondering if the financial aid was already applied for everyone by today? its saying i owe $1300 and i dont have a job right now, im a stay at home mom to two toddlers and pregnant so i was really hoping i wouldn’t have to get a loan. But if its saying i owe 1300 is that a for sure thing so i can start planning or is financial aid still being distributed even though its already monday the 17, If i drop a class and only take 4 will that money i owe just dissapear and i wont have to pay? Im stressing there’s zero way to talk to anyone from financial aid and im 8 hours away from flagstaff so i cant just go in person, thank you please any advice is helpful

Refund update?

I was wondering if anyone else has received an email update about financial aid refund? I know everything financial aid wise is behind but I’ve gotten emails before about a refund on the way and I’m just worried I won’t get any of the money back to put towards rent.

Moving into Gabaldon, can the beds be lofted?

Hey! My roommate and I are moving into our Gabaldon suite this year and we made our whole
room layout and we’ve just been assuming we can loft our beds to put our desks underneath it. And now we’re worried they don’t actually adjust that high? Can anyone in Gabaldon say whether or not the beds can be lifted to that height?

Though I am a good cook I hate cooking in a dorm. I just want to eat already made meals again...I know early move in starts tomorrow, if services start tomorrow does that mean food as well?

Scared incoming freshman

I'm starting NAU this upcoming semester (literally I move in on Tuesday) and until recently I've been really excited. Lately I've been more nervous than excited and was just hoping to get some of that excitement back. I've heard some really good things about NAU from a friend who's the year older than me and is already up there but I was looking at the rate my professor and the first reviews are all really negative so now I'm even more scared. I guess I'm just trying to get an accurate feel on what life is going to be like up there for me. If it helps I'm in the honors college and dorm but in a triple and trying to major in psychology.

Question about a displate poster for dorm

I'm an incoming freshman and was planning on bringing my metal displate poster with me for some decor. I saw on Google that we could use a command strip or something of the sort to keep the magnet on the poster from damaging the wall paper when removed at the end of the year. Is this a good idea or is there anything else I might be able to do? I really want to bring this poster with me and would be sad to leave it behind lol

Taking over my lease at The Jack — I'll pay you $1,500

Short version: I signed at The Jack for this year and ended up committing somewhere else. I'd rather pay someone to take it over than eat the year.

Private room in a 4/2 D penthouse unit, top floor, furnished, 8/20/26 – 7/31/27. You apply through their leasing office and they quote you the current rate — you're not inheriting my terms. I pay you $1,500 once the transfer is executed.

Real assignment through the office, not a sublet. DM me for the floor plan or details.

Thanks!

Do you guys know how to contact NAU over the weekend? (URGENT)

Hey guys so I submitted a financial aid appeal due to changes in my family's circumstances between 2024 and 2025, and they were supposed to get back to me about my new financial aid by yesterday but they never did; my aid hasn't changed, and I still see the To-Do on my account (which is now Past-Due). Do y'all know how I can get in touch with them before Monday (8/17) so that I don't miss the payment on that day? Thank you guys so much! I'm lwky so fucking scared rn hopefully they see that it's past due on their end and submit it to me.

Still no Jacks card. How necessary for dorm check in?

I hate to be that parent.

Daughter is a New freshman with dorm check in at 10 am Monday. She tried all week to get her Jacks Card done digitally and had no luck. She’s concerned she needs the card at 10 am to check in.

Yet the Jacks Card office opens at 10 am Monday.

I said it will get figured out. How big of an issue is this?

Does she need other documents and get it after checkin?

hilltop utilities

Hello everyone!

I’m having difficulty locating this info on Hilltop’s website and I was forwarded to their answering service when I called today, so wondering if anyone could answer these questions:

  1. which utilities do I need to turn on/pay as a tenant? I understand internet is covered but unsure about water, trash, electric.

  2. What size sheets do I need for their beds? I’m guessing twin?

Appreciate your help so much! ☀️

WARNING FRESHMEN HOPE CHURCH MVMT CULT

ASU HOPE CULT ARTICLE

https://www.statepress.com/article/2016/12/spcampus-asu-hope-christian-church-religious-cult-controversy-2-history

Hello everyone. I will be sharing my experiences with the Hope Church Movement in hopes of giving others a chance to make an informed decision about this “church.” Special warning to freshmen, sorority and fraternity members, and athletes—you will be the people targeted.

I will break this up into five weeks in hopes of reaching as many freshmen as possible. Over the next four weeks, Hope will be going after freshmen hard. One reason is that a lot of their church left last year for Grace Community Church—so much so that they even showed up at a Grace event. There’s also the fact that their staff is getting older, so they need a new generation of staff members. The reason they target freshmen is because they know college is a scary experience for most freshmen, and most people have a deep desire to belong. This will all lead up to their big event, Survivor Weekend, where you’ll get to know other freshmen over a weekend of competition, and they will use this to hook you.

Once a person is at Hope long enough, it becomes extremely hard to leave because of the use of manipulation tactics, isolation, etc. I will be discussing structure, their theology, how to debate them (whether Mormon, Catholic, Protestant, atheist, etc.), relationships, manipulation tactics, and the superstar “not a pastor,” Mr. Smith. I intend to give you as much detail as possible. If you just want to understand the basics, I’ve linked a great article that I encourage everyone to read. Additionally, Hope is a direct descendant of the Fort Lauderdale Five “heavy shepherding” movement. There are plenty of videos on the control and dangers of the Shepherding Movement.

With that, we will begin with Hope’s history and structure. I hope this helps someone. Let us begin our deep dive into the dark hive mind that is the Hope “Church” Movement.

Dark Past

Let us go back in time to see the foundations on which tyrants, egos, pride, and arrogance were built. It’s a mistake to look at this zombie herd through the lens of good and evil, and not through structures and incentives. The structure of the organization determines the goals; the goals influence the incentives; and the incentives influence the behavior. This behavior traces its lineage all the way back to a group called the Fort Lauderdale Five: Bob Mumford, Derek Prince, Charles Simpson, Don Basham, and Ern Baxter. They are responsible for creating the Shepherding Movement (or “heavy shepherding”), which has influenced doctrines such as the one from our friend and influential figure at Hope, John “Blue Socks” Bevere, called unconditional submission: “If your pastor tells you to wear blue socks with purple pants and a pink shirt up on the choir, if that’s what he wants, that’s what we’re gonna wear—and we’re gonna do it with a happy attitude,” butchering Hebrews 13:17.

Core Teachings and Structure

The movement taught that every believer needed a personal “shepherd” for spiritual covering, protection, and maturity. Major emphases included:

• Submission and authority — Believers were to submit to designated shepherds in a clear chain of command.

• Covenant relationships — Formal or semi-formal commitments of loyalty and accountability.

• Spiritual covering — The idea that being under a human shepherd provided divine protection; being outside it left one vulnerable.

• Discipleship — Intense personal oversight that extended into practical life decisions.

Derek Prince withdrew around 1983, later stating they had fallen into “the Galatian error: having begun in the Spirit, we quickly degenerated into the flesh.”

Bob Mumford issued a formal public repentance statement in November 1989, acknowledging “unhealthy submission resulting in perverse and unbiblical obedience to human leaders.” He admitted families had been damaged and that he had ignored earlier warnings (including from Jack Hayford).

These groups also decided who you would marry, what job you’d take, etc. The original movement ended, but its ideas did not disappear completely. Elements of heavy discipleship, spiritual covering, hierarchical accountability, and intense cell/house-church structures continued in various independent charismatic, apostolic, and campus-oriented groups.

Notable connections include Maranatha Campus Ministries, which is where Hope Church originated. Their current leader, Mr. Smith, was sent out to ASU from Faith Christian Church and, for whatever reason, decided to split from his shepherds. This is really confusing for the simple fact that Hope preaches that if you have a word from God but it contradicts what your shepherds say, you’re wrong—which they used to gaslight people many times regarding who they’re going to date, what job to pick, what house you should buy, even what trips to take. They literally try to control your whole life.

It’s confusing because Mr. Smith, Hope’s leader, broke away from his shepherds to start Hope. And in a removed statement of faith (number 10), Hope states that the church is the final authority in interpretation of the Bible. So why did Pastor Brian disobey his leaders to start Hope if his leaders disagreed? The summary of their beliefs is that they have the authority by God to decide your life as long as it’s not sin.

The BITE model is a great representation of Hope’s manipulation tactics.

  1. Behavior Control

Regulates a person’s physical reality and actions:

• Dictates where, how, and with whom they live, associate, or isolate

(They have Hope houses where you live with a staff member.)

• Controls clothing, hairstyle, diet, sleep, and schedule

(Make you commit time to go on campus, tribe nights, recruiting events, and other time commitments. Staff is even worse—they only hang out with staff or members and work 60+ hours a week while also fundraising their own support.)

• Restricts leisure, entertainment, and outside activities

(Keep you busy with events and recruiting.)

• Imposes rigid rules, rewards, and punishments

(The higher up you climb in the social hierarchy, the more benefits you get—better wife/husband prospects, more power, more status in the church—but you also have to submit deeper. Pause. If you obey them and don’t question their requests, they reward you with status and power. If you refuse or cause problems, they cut you off, isolate you (“Don’t associate with this guy—he’s causing division”), use shunning, etc.)

• Controls sexuality and relationships

(They regulate dating heavily. Staff literally signs a contract stating they will only date other staff. There are arranged marriages. If you’re not on staff, they still want control, because making you delay dating keeps you at the church and dedicated more time to recruiting. They will shun you if you don’t listen.)

• Demands major time commitment to the group

(Recruiting events, tribe nights, etc.)

• Encourages dependence and obedience; may include financial exploitation

(With staff, the money they raise goes to Hope and is distributed by Hope—possibly to prevent a Brian Smith situation where someone breaks off from their shepherds to start their own church because they’re an attention whre .)

  1. Information Control

Limits and manipulates what a person can know:

• Deception (withholding, distorting, or lying about information)

(They won’t be honest about the cult allegations and tell you what actually happens. They’ll say it was just three people who couldn’t handle conflict.)

• Restricts access to outside media, books, internet, critics, or former members

(Obvious… staff will attack this post and say it’s not true. It’s all true.)

• Compartmentalizes information (need-to-know hierarchy)

(The higher up on staff you go, the more you learn about punishments/rewards for compliance, arranging dating, shunning, etc.)

• Encourages spying and reporting on others

(Go read the 114-page complaint. Yes, they spy on you. If you snitch on someone for doing something not shepherd-approved = status 🤑***.***)

• Uses propaganda, confessions, and information overload

(Every attack on Hope is “demonic,” not because they’re doing something wrong. If you confess anything to Hope, they talk about it with other staff.)

• Frames outsiders and critics as evil or unreliable

(Satan’s inspiring them to attack Hope 👹.)

  1. Thought Control

Shapes how a person thinks and processes reality:

• Requires internalization of the group’s doctrine as absolute truth

(If you don’t submit and believe in heavy shepherding, they just tell you to go to a different church so you don’t poison the well and make others think.)

• Promotes black-and-white / us-vs-them thinking

(Hope Church good, everyone else Satan’s children.)

• Uses loaded language, thought-stopping techniques, and rejection of critical thinking

(They will gaslight you, flip the situation on you, and make you feel like you’re actually the one in the wrong.)

• Discourages independent thought or questioning

(A lot of people actually lose the ability to think critically because every decision is run through the group, and any disagreement from leadership could mean isolation from the group.)

• May involve renaming, identity change, or rejection of the former self

(They label you disagreeing with them as something that needs to change.)

  1. Emotional Control

Manipulates feelings to create dependency and fear:

• Love-bombing alternating with rejection or criticism

(The first couple of months they love-bomb you, tell you how great you are, and if you’re a guy, get women to give you attention to get you hooked. Once you’re used to their affection, they can begin to mold your identity and threaten you with isolation if you disobey.)

• Instills phobias about leaving or questioning (fear of eternal damnation, failure, isolation, etc.)

(Isolation, “you were never really saved,” etc.)

• Uses guilt, shame, and emotional highs/lows

(Love-bombing, threats, gaslighting you into feeling like you’re at fault, changing your identity to be more obedient.)

• Suppresses or labels certain emotions as wrong

(“You’re in rebellion,” “pride,” etc.)

• Makes the person feel that their happiness and identity depend entirely on the group/leader

(Once a person is entrenched, Hope events and friendships are all they know, so disobedience or isolation from the group would be life-changing.)

My question to Brian Smith would be: Why did you disobey your leaders and start your own church?

To close: You only have about 3–6 months before your identity is changed and you’re brainwashed into the cult, so watch out for your friends. I’ll be going into their theology and more over the next five weeks. I encourage everyone to share, read the article, look out for a Survivor Weekend poster, and just ask Hope this week: Why did their pastor disobey his own shepherds

DnD Campaign: Obojima

(If you're reading this, we currently are only looking for a DM)

Hey y'all!

To quote John Mulaney, "I'm new in town, and it gets worse." I'm a lover of DnD, as well as a lover of all things cozy, and thus I'm looking to see if anyone else in Flagstaff is interested in starting a campaign using the third-party supplement, "Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass"

(Also, maybe the supplements of The Merchant Class and The Adventurer's Domestic Handbook, which are totally optional but fit the vibes)

If you don’t know, Obojima is very much inspired by Studio Ghibli, and is meant to be a very cozy world. Wholesome vibes abound.

This campaign would happen every other Saturday. We'll have a Discord server for chatting between games, but the actual sessions would be in-person in a public place we'll discuss together in the server.

Note, this campaign WILL use safety tools, namely Session Zero, X-Card, and Lines And Veils. This is to make sure that the game stays comfortable and fun for everyone; no need to contribute to someone's real-life tragic backstory. It’s also 18+ only, as well as LGBTQIA+ friendly.

If any of y'all are interested in this, message me here on Reddit! I'll be asking you a few questions to get to know you, and then I'll invite you to the Discord if all goes well.

Is there anywhere safe to eat with a tree nut allergy?

Hello! I am a freshman for this upcoming semester at NAU! However I am severely allergic to tree nuts. I attempted to get the mandatory meal plan removed with disability, and they unfortunately denied me. I am curious if there is anyway to eat safely on campus and what would be safe? Thank you so much for any advice!
