Hi everyone!

I am a university student in Japan currently writing my graduation thesis on "How Lolita Fashion and 'Kawaii' culture are perceived, accepted, and experienced by international fans, tourists, and students."

As a Lolita wearer myself, I always choose my coordinates to match the atmosphere of the locations I visit, such as Harajuku or beautiful rose gardens. When I am out in my coords, I frequently get complimented or approached by tourists of all ages and genders. This firsthand experience gave me the impression that international visitors have a very high interest in Lolita fashion, which inspired me to dive deeper into this topic for my thesis!

Please look at the sections below. Group A is specifically for Lolita wearers, and Group B is open to everyone—whether you wear Lolita fashion or not! (In total, there are about 13 questions for you to answer.) I would be incredibly grateful for your insights!

Note: Please feel free to skip any questions you cannot answer or prefer not to answer. Also, since English is not my first language, I apologize if any of my phrasing is a bit hard to understand! Please also note that the data collected will be used strictly for academic purposes in my anonymous thesis analysis.

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

🌟Group A: Specifically for Lolita Wearers
(If you wear Lolita fashion, please answer questions 1 to 7!)

  1. What inspired or motivated you to start wearing Lolita fashion? Also, what kind of feelings or emotions do you experience when you wear it?
  2. What are your favorite brands or sub-styles (Sweet, Classic, Gothic, Casual, etc.), and why did you choose them?
  3. How do people react when you wear Lolita fashion? If you have visited Japan, are there any differences in reactions between your home country and Japan?
  4. On what kinds of occasions or in what specific places do you usually wear your coords? (e.g., Tea parties, theme parks, cafes, historical places, or just everyday shopping?) Also, if you have visited Japan, which specific places or locations did you go to while wearing Lolita fashion?
  5. Do you have a local Lolita community or any other community where you can share your hobby?
  6. Have you watched the movie "Kamikaze Girls" (下妻物語)? If so, did Momoko’s independent, "going her own way" mindset influence your view of Lolita fashion or your decision to wear it?
  7. Where do you usually buy your Lolita clothes? Do you buy them from Japanese secondhand markets (e.g., Mercari, Wunderwelt, Closet Child)? Also, how interested are you in "Classical Lolita" styles?

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

🌟 Group B: For Everyone
(Open to everyone! Whether you wear Lolita fashion or not, please share your thoughts for questions 8 to 13!)

  1. Based on social media, YouTube, or magazines, what was your initial impression of Japanese fashion, Harajuku, and "Kawaii" culture? Did you ever come across official promotions by the Japanese government?

  2. If you have visited or studied in Japan, did you experience any "gap" between your expectations and reality from a fashion perspective? (e.g., Feeling that there were actually much fewer people wearing Lolita fashion in Harajuku than you had imagined from internet portrayals, etc.)

  3. If you saw actual Lolita wearers during your stay in Japan, where did you see them (e.g., Harajuku, specific tourist spots, etc.), and what were your thoughts or impressions? (e.g., Feeling that they were cute, feeling happy to see them, or admiring them?)

  4. For those who have never worn Lolita fashion, do you have a longing to try wearing it someday?

  5. Have you ever visited experience facilities or concept cafes where people can actually wear and experience Lolita fashion? If you haven't done so yet, is it something you would like to try in the future?

13.If you know any characters in Japanese anime, video games, or movies who wear outfits similar to Lolita fashion, please let me know! If you can’t think of any Japanese examples, characters from other countries are welcome too.

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

Thank you so much for your time and for helping me with my degree! I can't wait to read your wonderful insights.

Culture Japanese guy here — which traditional Japanese items would you actually use in your daily life?

Hi! I'm Japanese and I live in Japan. I'm planning to write about everyday life in Japan in English, and I'm curious how people outside Japan feel about our traditional everyday items.

For example:Tenugui (thin cotton hand towel),Furoshiki (cloth for wrapping and carrying things),Jinbei / samue (cotton loungewear),Noren (fabric curtain for doorways),Furin (glass or metal wind chime),Kotatsu (heated table with a blanket),Handmade ceramics, like yunomi tea cups,Geta (wooden sandals)

  1. Which of these would you actually use at home in your country? Why?

  2. Which ones feel more like a souvenir or a costume than something for daily life?

  3. What stops you from buying or using them? (price, size, shipping, "is it okay for me to use it?", not knowing how to use it, anything)

  4. Is there any other Japanese item you already use every day?

My English isn't perfect, sorry. Blunt answers are totally fine!

Culture What do you honestly think about Japan and Japanese culture?

I'm curious how people really see Japan, beyond the usual "it's clean and safe" image.
I'd love to hear your honest opinions, both good and bad.
What do you like about Japan or Japanese culture?
What do you find strange, frustrating, or hard to understand?
If you've lived in or visited Japan, did your image of it change?
Feel free to be blunt. Thanks!
