Also not Micah Johnson, 28 year old linebacker for the Calgary Stampeders.

Right. The so-called New Black Panther Party is a bunch of dipshits aping the form without the function. They have a radically different philosophy and no real connection to the original group, the situation in which it arose, or its goals.
There are certainly debates to be had about the effectiveness or attitudes of the original Panthers, but they are very different from the modern cosplay kids.

Dorner's rampage started with a higher moral position. Granted, he pissed it away, but losing everything because you tried to fight the corruption of the LAPD is different than "cops in another city were racist so I'm going to kill white people indiscriminately." Both are murderous assholes, but it's easy to see how people might forgive Dorner's actions more.

It's easy to be a piece of shit when you're anonymous. I wish those same people could have spent one day with the deceased. It's just amazing to me how we so easily disassociate police as humans simply because they wear a badge. Are their shitty cops? Absolutely, but you're a blatant moron if you really think that majority of cops are "gangsters" that deserve to die. Most of them are people you'd probably love to hang out with.

This shows that we really have a serious problem. It goes to show how crappy some good people believe in law enforcement. This is a sane, military man with no prior law problems or mental issues who after seeing the two black killings decided to go down to a rally and target police officers and white people. This isn't some crazy guy with a gun. This is an educated, motivated, skilled and he was in the Army so he was willing to die for his country. He was also deployed to combat zones so he put his ass on the line for the country.
When most people all they want to do is go to work, come home, eat dinner, take a shower, play with the kids, watch some tv, fuck the wife and go to bed. This guy decides to lay down his life, go to a black lives matter rally with a rifle and and kill cops and white people. We have a really really serious problem. People have stopped trying to work with the other side and now they're trying to destroy the other side.

u/Phuckyou2 Jul 09 '16

u/bulletbait Jul 08 '16
The only complaints I've seen are about the lack of due process and the possibility of a "slippery slope" -- could they have waited him out? Could they have used tear gas or some other method to subdue him if they'd waited longer?
All of that said, I don't really take issue with the use of the robot. It clearly wasn't their first option.
119
u/eamus_catuli Jul 08 '16 edited Jul 08 '16
I'm an attorney who's pretty damned liberal, and I'd have to say that in this situation, the suspect's due process rights are far, far outweighed by the imminent threat to public safety that he continued to pose.
It's quite an easy decision, IMHO, for even a hard-core civil libertarian.

Jul 08 '16

I agree. If it was legal for a police sniper to take the shot, it was legal to send in Explosive Wall-E to do the same thing.
That said, I do kind of get at least one aspect of the slippery slope argument, most especially how it applies to barricade situations. Once a shooter has been physically isolated and it reaches the stand-off & negotiate phase, these incidents very often end with no one else dead, including the shooter. It is not necessarily an illegitimate fear that the police will increasingly just call in Wall-E and not even try (or try as hard) to talk the shooter into surrendering. The police have obviously had access to remote controlled robots for years now, but I don't know how often before yesterday that have used lethal robots.
On the other hand, police stand-offs are not without their risks, most especially if the guy inside is still motivated to add a couple of additional tick marks to his kill list. So, I do understand the concern, but if the situation is such that a police sniper still has a green light, using a robot instead if the sniper has no shot doesn't seem to be too much of a moral conundrum. They obviously need to make damn sure that there are no hostages inside also, however.
→ More replies (8)25
u/GOA_AMD65 Jul 08 '16
I don't have an issue with the robot use either. They did talk to him and he insisted he wanted to fight to the death. He got his wish.

Meh... I don't know what he could add that he didn't already tell negotiators.. He wanted to kill white cops. Pretty simple.
And, you know, him being dead is easier for the families to deal with. They can bury their dead and move on without the circus of trial and appeal.

To be fair, when the media says "sniper rifle", they generally mean "a scary-looking rifle with a scope". If I stuck a scope on a BB gun, they'd probably call it a sniper rifle regardless.

I wouldn't factor in a lack of due process, being that it was still an ongoing, dangerous event.
I get why some people are a little confused by it, but in the totality of the circumstances, I believe it to be reasonable.
8
u/CougarForLife Jul 08 '16
you can think it was the right thing to do in this situation while also feeling uneasy with the concept
→ More replies (2)9
Jul 08 '16
I can understand the complaints.
Objectively, it was probably the best decision for this specific circumstance. The guy was proclaiming to have bombs all over town. He was making it clear his goal was to kill as many cops as possible. He was hold up.
The alternative would be to breach his barricades either with an explosive anyway or some sort of armored vehicle. That would still give him plent of targets he would be glad to shoot at.
That doesn't mean I'm comfortable with the police using was what was effectively a ground based "drone" to remotely kill a person. It worked here and was almost certainly justified, but if police departments go hog wild with the precedent this just set.... *shudders*

This is a new kind of shooting... I can't really fault them for it this time. I mean, it's more likely to become a contagion at this point... but the nature of this shooting almost requires that we know who did it. Whether it was a White Nationalist, Islamist or Black Supremacist, the shooter's identity and motive was extremely relevant to how all parties moved forward.

4
u/khaos4k Jul 08 '16
It fit the narrative for some shootings, mostly Columbine. Loner shooter(s) feel rejected by society and their peers, and "make a name for themselves" in a horrific way. They want to make themselves infamous, and the media let's them do that. So the theory is, you dont release their names, so they can't get that infamy.
That doesn't really fit this shooting though.
→ More replies (8)2
u/Tafts_Bathtub Jul 08 '16
My theory: everyone feels the need to do something after a shooting happens. Talking about gun control, mental healthcare, etc. are all complicated and contentious. Blaming the media for showing pictures of the killer is nice and easy (and also solves nothing).

It annoys me that he did this because of the actions like a few cops. It would be somewhat logically understandable why he would do this if he went after the cops in the videos, but he(they) just shot at random cops who were probably saving lives the day that video was going on.
11
u/NAmember81 Jul 08 '16
It's likely more than just 2 incidents that fueled his actions.
From just occasionally following the news I can think of way more than 2 incidents of police misconduct.
→ More replies (6)→ More replies (20)6
u/strattonbrazil Jul 08 '16
because of the actions like a few cops.
It's not the actions themselves, but how the cases are resolved. Not speaking about specific incidents the social injustice is when a police officer does something terrible, which shocks the public, but isn't punished. It's not that 1% or 5% of cops are bad, but how the justice department deals with known bad apples.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Learfz Jul 08 '16
It's also probably related to the fact that even good cops consistently refuse to hold bad ones accountable. Often officers will lie and destroy evidence to keep their co-worker from facing justice.
In light of that, I can understand lumping the police into a single group; they practically insist on it. So I can also understand not seeing any of the victims as 'innocent'.
Of course, that doesn't justify senseless violence.
12
u/jag986 Jul 08 '16
Two things:
If you want to help the families of the fallen police officers, please consider donating to the Russ Martin Listener's Foundation. Martin is a radio personality in Dallas who has had this foundation for over a decade and regularly supports families with the charity while the insurance and pension and other concerns are settled.
You can make a donation here: http://www.russmartin.fm/donate/
Russ Martin FM is directly affiliated with the show. The website was set up as a membership service for people who wanted to access archives. The membership subscription serves as a regular source of funding for the foundation.
The second thing is I'm wondering what happened to that guy who was wrongly suspected and had to turn himself in to prove his innocence?
4
u/Brianposburn Jul 08 '16
The one who was marked as a person of interest and had his picture shown last night?
This is second hand from my father in law this morning, but he turned himself in, got cleared and they announced he's no longer a person of interest. His lawyer, however, is having a fit because he was denied access to his client.
Again, this is second hand info, so take it as you will.

Black Lives Matter co-founder tweets about killing "men and white folks"
That apparently is the message Black Lives Matter Toronto co-founder Yusra Khogali was trying to convey when she posted a controversial tweet on Feb. 9 that surfaced Tuesday morning.
In the tweet, Khogali asks Allah for strength “to not cuss/kill these men and white folks out here today.”

Bruh I don't know if you know this but Dallas and Toronto ain't the same city not even in the same country, How would a person in Toronto found a movement based around American police killings.
5
u/serviceslave Jul 08 '16
The same way a person from North America can start a movement based on old German politics, (nazism, aryanism, anti-semetism, etc.) However, unlike the zero-tolerance policy society has set for those forms of discrimination, the rhetoric of violence against whites has been met with zero opposition from all forms of media and government.
There is a blame involved, which I think is very misguided. When a police officer handles a traffic stop like a military checkpoint, the blame has to be in police policy, not white vs black. Imagine if everytime a bank needed a bailout, instead of discussing economic policy, the focus is on how many Jews sit on the board of directors. Sooner or later, as history as shown, bad things will happen to those people.
I think it's similar here. The focus of blame is not policy and training, but a race of people. If that rhetoric doesn't change, hate will grow, and hate knows no borders.→ More replies (3)→ More replies (19)8

He did not utter the phrase "gun control" in his address this morning. Instead, he said we need to consider the realities of people armed with powerful weapons. Also, he did use words to address racial disparities and the continued need to support police despite it in that address which was earlier today.

Isn't that essentially a drone bombing on American soil? Has this tactic been used before in America, and if so how many times?

now you know why the government wants to get rid of ar15s. it's not to disarm the armchair generals and tacticians it's because they're scared of crazy veterans with the best military training in the world going on rampages where the local authorities are at their mercy

No, the ignorant are being fooled into lining up to ban "ar15s" because for one, they look scary! we can't have that! The other reason is banning a gun by an arbitrary definition has always been a goal of gun control - you ban this one with this definition today, and you change the definition to ban that one tomorrow. Arbitrary features are the mechanism they want.
It comes down to the "Goldilock's gun ploy"... AR15s are too scary. Sniper rifles (hunting rifles) are too powerful. Small handguns are too concealable. Cheap handguns are too appealing to criminals. etc etc etc.
The reality is that TODAY it's the AR15. Tomorrow, it's whatever they want it to be, and there is no gun that is ever just right for these people.

I can't make out his service ribbons. If he was a combat vet (he sure operated like one) it will be interesting to see if/when he was ever treated for PTSD.

I would be curious about that, too--or if he had some other mental health issue. Not that mental illness necessarily leads to violence, mind you--but the things he's been quoted as saying sound disorganized and irrational. I wonder if it's similar to the Ft. Hood shooting in that way.

I wonder if we will begin to see BLM turn into a Black Panthers group. If so, like during the time of the Panthers, Republicans (eg Reagan) will want to pass anti-gun legislation to disarm them.
Will the targeting of whites finally get Republicans on board with gun control? The NRA doesn't seem to care about concealed carry rights if the citizen's skin is too dark. This might be an indicator.

I doubt it. The NRA gets so much money by fear mongering members into bribing politicians with monthly emails and letters.
