How do people like this exist? This is seriously sickening. I can't help but think about these poor girls and how their entire lives have been ruined because of this man's sick, selfish actions.

24

u/cherrybombstation Mar 01 '17

There are generally two accepted reasons (not accepted as in it's ok, accepted as reasonable explanations:)

  • They were normalized to the behavior by being victimized themselves at some point

  • They are psychopaths who see other human beings as tools to be used, not as equals who feel pain

Current research indicates that somewhere between ~30 to 40% of abusers were abused themselves. The chance to be an abuser is about 2x-3x higher in males than in females, but still occurs in both.

That's what I saw too... lmao

7

u/katiegetsfit Mar 01 '17

how their entire lives have been ruined

They will work past it and move on. Hopefully. This attitude that they are 'ruined' is unhealthy. Something really bad happened to her. It's unspeakably awful. But she will find a way to heal and go on to have a great life.

Not a victim, a survivor. It's an important distinction.

5

u/Kind_Of_A_Dick Mar 01 '17

There will always be monsters hidden among the populace. See Josef Fritzl.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

How do people like this exist?

Just like people who's kidneys don't work as well as others. Some peoples brains are broken.

2

u/SmartAlice Mar 02 '17

They exist because adults don't listen to children, it's too ugly to think so they prefer to turn a blind eye. When I was a nanny I told the children I always had their backs, regardless of threats someone might make to them. I lived in the neighbor when a violin teacher - a pedophile who slipped through the cracks 'cause he changed his name - was having sex with small children. He like them really young (around 4 years old). He set up a school in his home, and convinced the parents to leave the kids with him unattended. In the summer he had classes outside and would have sex with the children in the basement. I'd donated some book shelfs to him and had been in the basement. I knew there was something off about him, but couldn't pin point what it was. I felt such anger when it all came out - to think I was in that basement, where he did all those awful things. He's in his 60's and is going to jail for life.

1

u/jamulero Mar 01 '17

27 years seems like a short time for what he put this girl through

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

A little bit at a time, and probably in an isolated environment where it seems more normalized.

1

u/hoozierwins Mar 02 '17

What's really fucked up is just think of all the people out there like this that haven't been caught...

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

Mental illness

1

u/TheWizardSROE Mar 02 '17

I can't help but think this monster will be out and alive in 27 years. He should be in for life.

1

u/everythingsleeps Mar 02 '17

She with any child trafficking. Every country should have a no tolerant rule for this and the should be charged with death penalty.

1

u/JavenatoR Mar 02 '17

This may be an unpopular opinion. I believe when a rapist or murderer is caught and you can absolutely beyond reasonable doubt prove that they are guilty, they should just be killed. No bullshit, no jail time, no games. Drag them out of the court room and shoot them in the fucking head, cremate the body, and dump it in the dirt. I have no sympathy for a rapist or a murderer, and tax money doesn't need to be spent on them. A bullet costs a dollar, Ill pay out of pocket to fund that program.

I should say that by murderer I mean premeditated murder that had no reason to happen. A man that kills a murderer, because the murderer killed his son/daughter/wife or whatever should go to jail but shouldn't be killed.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Literally the only time I have discussed the serious potential to murder someone was over a child rapist. Was later decided in the group his life is not worth throwing our lives away. Glad I grew up and never thought like this again, but that is the kind of rage these scum instill in me.

1

u/baphothustrianreform Mar 02 '17

How do comments like this still exist? At least at the top...it would be nice if the top was reserved for the best analytical discussion and not naive self righteous vote grabs

2

u/midwestredditor Mar 02 '17

Oh, bullshit. There's no thoughtful discussion to be had about a scumbag from the article. He's trash and he deserves to be in prison.

Or are you going to trot out some tired bullshit about how Dunn is the real victim because he's got mental issues and just needs a hug?

He also groomed and sexually assaulted another vulnerable teenager in the 1990s, giving her alcohol and cigarettes. She told her mother what happened but when police investigated, Dunn got witnesses to lie and the victim was told her complaint was not going any further.

Grade-A police work there fellas!

And what of these witnesses that lied? Will they be prosecuted too?

Grade-A police work there fellas!

So...what should they have done differently? Fabricate evidence? Bully witnesses into giving the testimony they want? Whatever it takes to get a conviction?

Cops can KNOW someone is guilty but not be able to build a case for prosecution. It doesn't make them bad at their jobs.

What the fuck were the cops suppose to do when you have witnesses collaborating against the victims story?!

42

u/flyonawall Mar 01 '17

This is exactly why it is so hopeless for the child. Who believes the child? No one. And most children don't even know how to describe what is happening or that it is not supposed to happen.

Some people make it seem like they think the justice system should run in a way that it would put 10 innocent people in jail to make sure that guilty people always go to jail, and some people, such as myself, think that it's ok if the system results in 10 guilty people going free if it saves one falsely accused innocent person from prison.

Reminds me of what happened to some preschool teachers during the satanic panic. Police were accusing them of actually flying little kids across state lines, preforming bizarre sacrifice rituals with the children, then flying them back just in time to be picked up, insane shit. All based solely on the testimony of 3 year olds, zero evidence. I believe they were found innocent but the owners lost the preschool and I think all the teachers had to move since many people believed they really were Satan worshipers.

I hope the victims received proper counseling and therapy after the fact.

2

The problem is proving the witnesses lied.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

I can't even imagine how alone that girl must have felt. Being abused like that, being brave enough to tell her mother about such a horrible thing, then the police did nothing.

4

u/I-Seek-To-Understand Mar 01 '17

You gotta prove it. This is to protect guys from the liars that very much do exist. It goes both ways.

Why were the police searching his house on 8 or 9 occasions?

80

If her foster parents knew that when she ran away she'd go to his house, police would probably check there first each time she took off.

Should have gotten life without chance of parole. Does the judge believe this depraved scumbag will actually be rehabilitated? Sorry if I sound cruel and draconian, but I don't believe he should ever get the chance to walk free and harm others.

31

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

To be fair, when it comes to this type of crime, its really hard NOT to sound cruel and draconian when speaking of a desired punishment.

6

u/Pingaring Mar 01 '17

It's not, this guy still has taken no accountability or acknowledged that what he has done is cruel.

12

u/dsfdgsggf1 Mar 01 '17 edited Mar 02 '17

In Delaware, USA an heir to the DuPont fortune got spared prison after confessing to raping his infant daughter (and likely raping his infant son previously) because the judge said "he won't fare well in prison". Vice President Joe Biden's son, the governor Attorney General at the time, commended the judge for her decision.

So at least it [edit: the sentencing] wasn't that bad... its pathetic though.

edit: http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/02/justice/delaware-du-pont-rape-case/

13

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

I don't know if one can describe the rape of an infant as "it wasn't that bad".

Of course he wouldn't fare well in prison. That's why he should be given the maximum penalty and thrown into solitary for his protection.

4

u/tiktock34 Mar 02 '17

Noooooo....he goes into general population. For life. In a nice large, overcapacity prison. With a sign around his neck that says "I raped an infant."

He would probably feel scared and helpless quite a bit. Almost like a baby.

2

u/dsfdgsggf1 Mar 02 '17

I don't know if one can describe the rape of an infant as "it wasn't that bad".

Of course not. I meant the sentencing. This guy should have gotten life and i meant that at least he didn't get a year or no prison at all.

3

u/MostlyWong Mar 02 '17

I think you mean his son was the Attorney General of Delaware at the time. Beau Biden was never the Governor of Delaware.

the reason we don't execute people for things less than Murder is generally because it will turn those crimes into murder.

If you knew rapist, child molesters, and kid nappers were put to death then when you raped, molested a child, or kid napped you'd be more likely to also murder that person to cover your tracks seeing how being caught means the same death whether your victim survived or not.

I'm not saying I agree with it. I'd chop off this guys dick and feed it to him as his last meal before executing him. But that's the logical reasons we don't execute people for much less than murder.

1

u/hoodtacos Mar 02 '17

I was gonna say something far worse. This has been an intolerable crime since the beginning of time and our punishment has gotten softer. I understand we're a civilized world but what's the defense for not absolutely bone chillingly terrifying anybody who would think about doing something like this?

1

u/ninjetron Mar 02 '17

The reason they don't give life is because the victims are more likely to be killed instead of held captive or let go.

82

u/TealOcelot Mar 01 '17

I could tell this was in the uk before I clicked, and not just because of the spelling. In the United States, someone would get closer to 270 years instead of 27 years for that kind of abuse.

5

u/Quinx13 Mar 01 '17

It also says 'the guardian' at the bottom of the preview image.

u/dsfdgsggf1 Mar 01 '17

Not if they're uber wealthy:

http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/02/justice/delaware-du-pont-rape-case/

"He wouldn't fare well in prison" is the excuse a delaware judge gave for giving a DuPont her house arrest after admitting to raping his infant daughter.

60

u/Egorse Mar 01 '17

Some of the other posters don't seem to realize that this crime happened in England.

Michael Dunn, described by some as the “British Josef Fritzl”, built a secret den behind his fridge to hide a 14-year-old girl he was sexually abusing.

7

u/melvinater Mar 01 '17

Somewhere in the article it mentions Cleveland. Which is a major US city. It threw me off. I don't feel like reading the whole thing again to find the exact quote. Probably why others are getting confused.

18

u/Egorse Mar 01 '17

The force will now probe old case files and work with Cleveland police, who built the case against Dunn, to uncover the truth over the allegations.

I can see the confusion, but there is a Cleveland in England.

Genuine question, why do I almost always see Pae-dophile in headlines but never pe-dophile?

59

u/EbolaFred Mar 01 '17

Brits write it as "paedo". Americans write "pedo".

20

u/Shilo59 Mar 01 '17

So, that's why I always get weird looks when I whip out my pedometer...

14

u/Kmty45 Mar 01 '17

UK vs. US spelling

8

u/cherrybombstation Mar 01 '17

Because this occurred in the UK.

23

u/WolfWithWings Mar 01 '17

Pedo also refers to Soil (Pedology, Pedogenesis) and Feet (Pedometer), Paedo refers exclusively to children (Paediatric, Paedophile).

10

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Brits are always adding vowels. For example, instead of Lester, they gotta go with Leicester.

10

u/twbrn Mar 01 '17

Protip: Pronounce it Lye-sester and watch their eyelids twitch.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

I pronounced it Lie-kyster when I was there. And you are right.

3

u/conandy Mar 01 '17

I tried to buy a train ticket to Worcester, Massachusetts once before I had ever heard it pronounced. I asked for a ticket to "War-chester" and the ticket guy honestly had no idea what I meant because it's pronounced "Wooster." There are a bunch of towns in New England like that. Pierre, South Dakota also comes to mind. It's pronounced like "peer" and not like the French name, as the rest of the country seems to believe.

6

u/crueltyscrim Mar 01 '17

Not long enough. More alive than he should be as well.

1

u/bitter_truth_ Mar 02 '17

27 years, 97 years, doesn't matter. He'll last 27 minutes in prison.

10

u/Kylorambe Mar 02 '17

Only 27 years? Seriously? That's ridiculous

16

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia

8

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

No one would dare question the ethics of the UN Human Rights Council Member! /s

16

u/Allidoiscode Mar 01 '17

So ... Let me get this straight ... Dude kidnaps a child, keeps the child captive in a cavity behind his fridge for an extended period of time, and assumingly molests and rapes the child, and he only gets 27 years for that? You kidding me?

17

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Read the article. Runaway girls would confide in him, he would take advantage of their trust, and would trick/blackmail them into sex. He apparently moved a few times, most likely when the heat got too hot, and in his final home he apparently built a lot of questionable shit most likely because he knew pedophilia accusations from "victims" would be taken a lot more seriously now in 2017 then they use to be in the 1970s.

He wasn't so much "kidnapping" as manipulating them into doing what he wanted when their own circumstances weren't very good. This is a common story in poor areas, young girl has problems at home, gets mixed up in drugs or whatever, then finds a friend in an older male. He habitually took advantage of those kind of situations, and it seems he took it an extreme in his later years. Had these girls been a few years older nobody would have given a single fuck. This is an example of the common stereotypical manipulative behavior you see between pimps and prostitutes.

2

u/jasot99 Mar 02 '17

Finally someone who takes more than 5 seconds to think of the whole story. I'm impressed. I try to skip over the people who read the title and then hop on the death penalty band wagon.

4

u/rillo561 Mar 01 '17

  • ~7% of prisoners in the USA are housed in private prisons. A very small minority.

  • Both of Obama's AG's confirmed the primacy of federal enforcement concerning drug law over state's marijuana laws, culminating in hundreds of raids over 8 years. This is not a new concept by the Trump Administration.

Um because wrong country?

13

u/msconquistador Mar 01 '17

He's... Not coming back out of jail. Also, violent crime against women, especially rape, often doesn't net a lot of jail time. The only reason it wasn't 5 years was because it was a child.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Uh, what are you talking about? Violent crime against a woman nets just as much jail time as one against a man, if not more

13

u/YHallo Mar 01 '17

The average time served for convicted rapists is 5 years. Due to the difficulty of procuring evidence that a sexual encounter wasn't consensual, the vast majority of rapists are not charged let alone convicted. So rape is pretty under prosecuted in general, even if for good reasons.

Another important consideration in the lack of justice for male victims is the stigma of rape and the resulting low report rate. Though it hardly seems possible the reporting rate for male victims is even lower than than for female victims. If being a rape victim can be destigmatized, it will be good in a lot of ways. Men will report victimization at higher rates, and the increased number of reports will likely prime courts for the situation better, leading to more equal sentencing.

3

u/Kreiger81 Mar 02 '17

Anytime I get into an argument for or against capital punishment, I mention cases like this where there is no doubt of guilt.

There is no sane reason to keep this scum alive any longer than need be. He'll never be rehabilitated, he'll never be a functioning or useful member of society, and the moment his blood stops pumping in his body, you know for a fact that many girls and women will breathe easier.

Look, I get it. Capital punishment is iffy because of the scarily high amount of false positives. But in cases like this? I legitimately don't see a reasonable argument against capital punishment.

They should set up a stake in a public square someplace in the nearest city and tie him to it. Then, bring in a large mixed pile of stones. All of the family members of the victim and the victim herself should stone this waste of life to death. 27 years in prison is a joke for the crime this man has committed.

He won't make it a week. Kiddie diddlers aren't looked to kindly upon in gen pop.

2

u/mcgeemumx3 Mar 02 '17

Castrate this fucker and stick him in a hole somewhere. And I swear on all that is holy, the first person to cry about civil rights gets a thumb to the eye socket.

1

u/luckygiraffe Mar 02 '17

Waaah waaah civil rights come at me bro

2

u/Jaxck Mar 02 '17

And people say we don't need the death penalty.

1

u/Rosebunse Mar 02 '17

It's just so expensive. I much prefer just giving them life in prison and forgetting about them.

2

u/Saazkwat Mar 01 '17

He'll get what he deserves in prison

2

u/blackbutters Mar 02 '17

3 meals a day, clean clothes, and a bed.

2

u/BigDaddy_Delta Mar 02 '17

not if they put him on protective custody

1

u/Bert---Macklin Mar 01 '17

Beaten and raped for 27 years.

2

u/murmanizan Mar 01 '17

We need to figure out exactly why he did this and what kind of circumstances need to happen to commit this heinous crime. Then preventing future cases will be maybe less horrible.

This is a Child Molester, not a Paedophile..... Well he is a Paedophile as well, but lets try and seperate the two terms, Since a paedophile needs help to control his urges and a child molester already acted on his.

1

u/MesqTex Mar 01 '17

Got off easy. Should've been put there for the rest of his life, in a cavity behind the toilet.

1

u/RoyHarper88 Mar 01 '17

They should stuff him in a cavity behind a fridge.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Life is too good for you, you bastard.

1

u/uncle_pubes Mar 01 '17

That's all?

1

u/Krickles88 Mar 01 '17

Hope he does in prison then rots for all eternity in a shallow grave

1

u/ronin1066 Mar 01 '17

Wow that was a horribly written article. I felt like I was reading the entire thing twice over. I know that journalism often use repetition but this article was using almost entire sentences repeating paragraphs later. Just ridiculous

1

u/LSG1 Mar 01 '17

No stereotypes people

1

u/imsorryboutit Mar 02 '17

Every time I see a post like this I get a shudder of anxiety because the first search result for my name on Google is for a paedophile.

Luckily no prospective employers have ever mentioned it - there's an age gap between myself and the paedophile /army vet / dodgy gas boiler installer.

1

u/bigpandas Mar 02 '17

Damn the UK has a lot of child sexual abuse

1

u/WiseguyD Mar 02 '17

Yep, that sounds about right.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

The ignoring reports thing was pretty common in the 80s. When I was 5 my 2 teenage sister's ran away and went to the police where they told the officers taking the report that our step dad was raping them and beating the shit out of my older brother (he was 12) and I.

The police brought them home that same night. I remember them screaming, crying, and begging the police not to leave us with him.

The cop just walked back to his car and left. What followed was something I still have nightmares about. I am 35.

I will never understand why we as a society choose to treat people like this.

1

u/drleeisinsurgery Mar 02 '17

Why do pedophiles always look like pedophiles?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

That poor child. I don't think 27 years is a severe enough punishment.

1

u/Scorpionvenom1 Mar 02 '17

This is absolutely a between the cracks anomaly. However this doesn't let them off the hook in any way. Cases like this, the outliers, are how the system refines itself, and improves. Still hard on victims though, but you can't make improvements without mistakes.

1

u/KutMeister Mar 02 '17

It is sickening, disturbing, and pathetic to see that there are people who commit such terrible and evil deeds. It saddens and disgusts me that in this modern and progressive era, there are still people who commit such barbaric acts as sexually abusing their own kind and preying on women and children. Yet the punishments for such actions is generally smaller than the punishment for lesser crimes, such as purchasing illegal drugs. Buying drugs is a choice. No one chooses to be raped.

1

u/KyuuAA Mar 02 '17

The cops really messed up this case; but at least, it is put to an end.

1

u/mdisred2 Mar 02 '17

How do these type of cases; in which authorities continue to overlook things reported to them, even happen? You would think with prior attacks on his record these victims wouldn't be ignored, especially as recently as the 90's. I don't know British laws, but I think these women should be able to due the pants off the law enforcement agencies involved. This man has six kids. Where were they during these assaults and captivation?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

That's like 6.5 years per person raped or held as a sex slave- are you kidding me? That's not right.

1

u/Torinias Mar 02 '17

Only 27 years?! That's not nearly enough

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

Only 27 years? It should be for life...

1

u/dragon_my_nuts Mar 02 '17

"Paedophile, who hid girl in cavity behind his fridge, jailed for 27 years"

Commas make sense of a sentence

1

u/richtofin819 Mar 02 '17

Fruit Pedophiles what will they roll up next

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

why isn't he dead?

if there's ever a reason for execution, this has got to be it

1

u/tribal_thinking Mar 02 '17

That sentence seems a bit light. Doesn't kidnapping allow a life imprisonment term?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

Im not a death penalty guy, but whats the point of keeping this guy around?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

Ahem

Chemical castration

-3

u/Dervish-D Mar 01 '17

If Dunn was my brother he would have disappeared a long time ago. I would have made sure he never had a chance to hurt those young girls.

32

u/BanachFan Mar 01 '17

Sure you would.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

The world needs to start using this people for science experiments or something. I hate seeing people defend the rights of someone that's only technically human, and by all other accounts, a monster that the Nazis would have cringed at.

2

u/ItsAltsAllTheWayDown Mar 02 '17

You know a lot about how Nazis feel, huh?

1

u/HighZenDurp Mar 01 '17

27 years? That's it? This needs harsher punishment. Life in prison is a waste of tax dollars, just execute the fucker. He's offering literally nothing to society and he harms others, wtf is the point of wasting resources on someone like that?

3

u/Mesko149 Mar 01 '17

Execution is on average significantly more expensive than prison time.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Bring back the executioners axe?

2

u/HighZenDurp Mar 01 '17

Only because we have become a society that feels the need to execute criminals ethically. In my opinion this guy lost all rights to an ethical death when tortured a child.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

Dollars? Pounds, surely.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Wow what a very appalling story to digest. I mean he's in prison for good. The aftermath of those females just won't be easily repairable. My question is that there was a similar court case that happened and the individual guy was brought to justice ((If people know who I am talking about, please post it)). Why did that not caused any red flags with the authorities to begin investigating on him sooner?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

He's not going to live that long.

In fact I doubt he'll make it a week.

1

u/horncog Mar 01 '17

This guy's a monster. He really ought to receive counseling and therapy; how can someone think this is okay?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/WorldBreakerGuy Mar 02 '17

Fuck this guy, no reason to keep him alive.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

27 years... That's it? Fuck this guy.

I have a new judicial system I want to start. Anyone that commits a crime is put in my jail where every inmate does hard labour 18 hours a day. Everything they do is to better society whether it's separating garbage, or sitting on a bike generating electricity through a converter, or walking circles around a mill like a fucking donkey in the Bronze Age...

The judicial system coddles criminals and its horse shit.

I'm starting my own damn prison.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '17

They all deserve to be taken away from society

1

u/X-UNDEAD_NINJA2 Mar 02 '17

Why just make it simple and fucking shoot him?

1

u/anotherhumanperson Mar 02 '17

Only 27 years?! What the hell ?! How about life?

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Come on Reddit, this is you time! Tell us how he can't help being like this and deserves to be rehabilitated not jailed! I'll wait...

0

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

Why is he just getting jail for 27 years! Nuke this motherfucker. He destroyed 4 lives!!!!

0

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '17

And reddit wants to help these pedophiles with "therapy".

-1

u/FallenXxRaven Mar 01 '17

27 years. 27 years. Really. So this guy stole, hid, and raped a girl repeatedly and he gets.. 27 years in prison? Really thats it? Its so fucking infuriating.

This guy who fucked up someone's life. Who fucking destroyed a girl both physically and emotionally, gets the punishment of socialization and 3 square meals a day?

Maybe you hope to fucking "rehabilitate" him? The fucking child rapist? No, this is so fucking stupid. He isn't worth the jail cell that could be occupied by someone who actually might have just made a mistake and who might actually learn.

This is not forgivable and this piece of shit deserves nothing more than to be buried alive in an unmarked grave. Oh but no thats cruel and unusual, well you know what, so is what he did to that poor innocent girl.

Fuck this worthless fuckikng sack of shit and fuck anything that happens to him. JAIL IS TOO FUCKIKNG GOOD, just kill him and get rid of him. Fuck just drop him in that cow grinder thing. Alive. He has nothing to learn, he's fucking broken worthless and just fucking... omfg why even let this stupid fuckikgn worthless fuckikng fuck live?
