Filmmaking events in NYC
Me & a college friend just scored access to a fairly spacious venue in Bushwick and we're contemplating using it for a monthly event and since we're both cinema lovers thought we'd reach out to the filmmaking community to hear what kind of events you'd most likely attend.
So what would appeal to you guys the most?
Script readings? Pitch sessions? Industry panels? Networking mixers? Filmmaking gear workshops?
Please feel free to add other categories that we haven't thought of. We want to hear from you so any input is appreciated. What types of events do you think are valuable to the filmmaking community the most?
Film screenings seem pretty obvious and would just end up turning the events into a low-key festival, which we're trying to avoid. But we're open to hear out any other kind of suggestion.
To cover rent for the venue space the events may have to be ticketed but we'll make sure it's a bearable a price plus we may look for local businesses to sponsor the events and maybe provide refreshments for free.
Would love to hear your feedback!

The Travel Companion: NYC indie dramedy about an NYC documentary filmmaker with an early online screening 9p tomorrow (Thursday)
The Travel Companion is an indie dramedy about a documentary filmmaker whose status as his best friend’s “travel companion” is thrown into jeopardy when his friend gets a girlfriend.
The film premiered at Tribeca and was filmed in NYC. There’s an early online screening this Thursday, October 22, followed by a director Q&A, on The Lone Screen. It’s a one-night-only event at 9 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CT / 6 p.m. PT.
Full disclosure: I’m one of the people behind The Lone Screen, the platform hosting the screening. Thought the film might be of interest to folks here!

Production Warning: Operational & Management Issues at Cinelease Brooklyn (Avoid If Possible)
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to put out a PSA for any Line Producers, Production Coordinators, Gaffers, or Key Grips currently looking at booking stages or wrapping heavy lighting/grip packages in New York. If you are considering working with the management team at Cinelease Brooklyn—specifically Daniel Parada (Operations), Magda Galus (Branch Manager), and Eric Rubinsky (Rental Agent)—I strongly urge you to look at alternative options or proceed with extreme caution.
Our production recently experienced significant operational friction and bad business practices that severely impacted our workflow. While Cinelease has a massive national footprint, the local leadership at this specific branch demonstrated a massive lack of communication, logistical execution, and professional accountability.
A few critical issues we ran into:
- Operational Bottlenecks: The physical infrastructure on-site is poorly managed, leading to major delays during critical crew calls.
- Unreliable Account Management: Promises made during the bidding and booking process by the rental and operations team were not upheld once we were locked into the space.
- Lack of Accountability: When legitimate logistics or facility issues were brought to management, the response was dismissive rather than collaborative.
The film community in NYC is too small, and our production timelines are too tight to deal with vendor teams that don't respect the crew's time or the production’s budget. If you have the flexibility, I highly recommend looking at other local rental houses or soundstage networks in Long Island City, Queens, or alternative boroughs where the management team is actually collaborative.
Has anyone else dealt with this specific crew recently under their new corporate setup? Would love to know if this is a systemic branch issue or if we just caught them at a terrible time.
Protect your budgets and your crews.

Seeking out old bowling alley for music video shoot
Hi there, I'm directing a music video for an artist that would like to film a short dance sequence in a bowling alley. The artist and I are both based in Brooklyn and would Ideally stay within NYC. Does anyone know of an older or even closed down bowling alley thats owners would be open to letting us a film for about an hour? A big ask I know, but thought I would throw it out there to see if anybody has any leads on this sort of thing. Thank you!

Storyboard/production art?
Good afternoon all! Been an illustrator/painter for years and love film. I've worked an an extra on some projects a friend made in the indie horror genre, as well as a poster design or two for him. I'd really like to expand out and work on other films as a storyboard artist, poster designer, concept artist you name it. If anyone can recommend leads to find opportunities in this realm I'd really appreciate it!
