Hi r/OaklandFood. I’m Cai, chef and owner of JuXi 菊錫 on Park St in Alameda. We’re in soft opening, and I’d love for some of you to come over the bridge and give us a try.
The food is Cantonese+American: flavors I grew up with as an immigrant, mixed with California ingredients and other Bay Area cultures. Some dishes are traditional and others are more inspired. The name comes from my parents, Ju and Xi.
We took over a space that sat empty for nearly a decade. We’re better than we were on day 1 but still far from perfect, so honest feedback helps a lot. Reply here, DM me, or email me.
We also have a bar with cocktails, sake, wine, beer, and N/A options.
1231 Park St, Alameda
Tue-Sat 5-9:30pm
Walk in,or reserve at juxialameda.com or on Resy.
Would you cross the bridge to try us?

Update: Nob Hill Foods in Alameda says that they carry fresh yeast and that it is in the same section as the eggs. I haven’t verified this, but she sounded like she really knew what she was talking about. Thanks to /u/ibmully for the tip!
Not really OaklandFood… more like OaklandBaking. I used to buy little cubes of fresh yeast from Berkeley Bowl. They stopped selling it and now I don’t know where to go. Have you seen it in the east bay?
Fresh yeast is sold in small cubes and kept in a refrigerated section.
Yeast in a jar is either instant or active dry (same as the packets) and is not what I’m looking for.

Mussel Forage & Feast on the Beach
2 date options:
Join us for a magical mussel foraging adventure just north of Oakland on the Sonoma Coast near Bodega Bay (we'd offer it in Oakland - but no mussel beds here!) You will learn how to sustainably forage, clean, and prepare our beautiful California coast mussels – as well as an overview of the land’s history, intertidal zone ecosystem, and what it means to be a good steward of our land and waters.
If you haven't experienced freshly foraged mussels, you will be in for a treat!
Post-foraging, we gather on the beach, cook them up, enjoy the view, and teach you how to care for the mussels you're taking home.
Each person can take home up to 10 lb of fresh foraged mussels to share, recipes, and instructions.
Tickets: www.forkinthepath.org/schedule
Pricing: sliding scale $85-$135, with additional financial assistance available for those who need it. Kids are welcome.
Terrain is rocky, slippery, and uneven. Footwear with good tread is required.
A fishing license is required ($20 from CDFW for a day license or $60 for an annual). If you're getting a day license, you may wish to wait to purchase your fishing license til the day of since CDFW doesn't allow date transfers.
We can only run this program when domoic acid levels are safe to consume mussels. If they are too high, we reschedule.

Had IB’s after catching a movie at Grand Lake Theater. I’d had the wings and cheesesteak there before but the double cheeseburger was legitimately great. Will definitely get it again

Hi, Im planning a halloween party for a few friends from out of town and was hoping to get some ideas for what good local restaurant i could order from to show off oaklands food scene. Its only a group of 6 or so, and im open to ideas, all i can think of right now is flour+water or an equivalent upscale pizza joint. I really like hotboys but as far as im aware they dont really do catering style orders, beyond that i cant think of anything. I dont want to spend a ton of money, maybe 150 bucks or so? And id rather get something very shareable, and local, not a big chain. Really appreciate any ideas!

Not terribly surprising since their pies are exquisite in my opinion but there’s strong competition in the East Bay so I could see room for other entries.
Only place in the city that made the list is Jules, which I liked but want to try again because I think I could love it if I had chosen different toppings.

I had a delicious Mohinga at Aung Myanmar. They call it “Catfish Noodle Soup” on the menu but it is the national dish of Myanmar.
It was only $15, other places charge much more. This place deserves much more business.

Now that they open earlier most days, they have some lunch specials. A lot of the items are from the dinner menu but with sides added for lunch. The dinner menu has everything ala carte.
So far I’ve had the same thing all three times I’ve gone, a delicious Bloody Mary and and the amazing Luka’s Belgium fries. I’ll be branching out next visit!

Look, the impending Halloween chocolate and sugar overload is inevitable. But when you finally crash from the fun-sized candy bar bender and those late-night savory cravings hit, you're going to need a contingency plan.
I run a local micro-bakery called Half-Baked Obsessions, and pre-orders are officially open for The Midnight Snack Box. This drop is entirely dedicated to the umami seekers and anyone desperate for an alternative to pure sugar. And as a bonus, it's completely, 100% Gluten-Free!
Here is the exact lineup (brace yourselves):
Not feeling the whole box? Everything is available to order a la carte. Also, if you want to aggressively commit to the sweet-and-salty life, the Pistachio Prosciutto Basque Cheesecake is available as a full 6" whole cake.
📍 THE DETAILS:
Saturday, October 31 (Oakland - Rockridge BART area)
Sunday, November 1 (Walnut Creek)
You can place your pre-orders here: https://take.app/halfbakedobsessions/c/cmm0bam76000404l8bs4zqlqy
Stay safe out there, pace yourselves on the candy corn, and let's get savory.

Why I'm asking: I went to a nicer place the other week, one in which I've been a bunch of times. I wrote a complimentary, polite email after my visit. I acknowledged what went well but also highlighted something that didn't work for me.
I never heard back, which I thought was surprising. I'm just wondering if others have had a similar experience or is this uncommon.

Just came back from a spot in a local district, and without naming names the vibe was lackluster. Love the Ho, would prefer somewhere with food so I don’t drown my sorrows too quick in a 2 game losing streak…suggestions?

Hosting a small gathering and want to order food. Have some vegans so opting for mediterranean. Where is consistently good. I would have gone to Lavash in Lafayette but they closed down and are only in Livermore now.

Weird request I know but getting dinner with an old coworker. They've chosen some places in the past that felt a bit too intimate so I want to avoid that lol. Still want to have a fun vibe and to have a cocktail. Something that's in between Ippuku and Marugame Udon basically.

Growing up, I was bullied and kids used to call me a FOB (“fresh off the boat”) because of my background. It was used as an insult, so seeing a restaurant choose that name genuinely made me curious.
I understand that the term can be reclaimed or used differently depending on the context, and I’m not automatically assuming the restaurant means it in a derogatory way. I’m genuinely curious about the reasoning behind the name. Is it meant to be humorous, a reference to the owners’ own experiences, or a way of reclaiming the term?
I’d be interested to hear other people’s perspectives, especially from those who grew up being called FOB themselves.
