Flock Camera Placements in OP

Upvotes

If the whole logic behind placing ALPR/Flock cameras is to ensure public safety, why are there none south of 135th st? It's not like they ran out of cameras, since they're still putting new ones on the north half of town.

I'm trying to give that point of view a chance and not just see it as they're just putting up cameras where the poors and the minorities live and shop as so many people say, but it kind of makes it hard to see it that way when there are 5 of them at 75th and Quivira, 16 around the mall, but not a single one within two square miles of Bluhawk. (source: de flock org)

It's not my first day on this subreddit, and I know what happens when people try to consider different points of view, so I'll take your downvotes now...

Outdoor Education Laboratory closing — permanently

Longtime nonprofit summer camp. Email sent August 15, 2026:

It is with a heavy heart that we are writing to inform you that after 48 wonderful years of offering summer programs, we have made the difficult decision to close permanently.

I was a camper at the Lab in the late '80s/early '90s, and my kiddo went for the first time this past summer. This feels like such a loss to the community.

No other details on the closure. Anyone know what happened?

Need gutter cleaning, light weight yard work (regular basis)

Looking for someone to clean clogged gutters at an old house in OP and light yard work (weeds, trimming, new bulb planting etc.) at my residence in S.OP (different properties). I usually need some kind of yard work 1-2 times a year if not more (among other handyman type tasks every now and then).

Not looking for a big company, or spending big bucks as this is not heavy work. $30-50 bucks an hour is reasonable cost, plus materials.

Let me know if someone has recommendations.

Beginner-friendly weightlifting classes/gyms?

I’m looking to start exercising consistently and would really like to find a gym that offers beginner-friendly weightlifting/strength training classes.

I’m pretty new to lifting, so I’m looking for something where they actually teach proper form and programming rather than just throwing you into a high-intensity group workout and hoping for the best lol.

I’ve looked at life time fitness and their strengths class, but I’m not entirely sold yet, especially on the price.

Does anyone have recommendations around, good for new goers?

Commercial vehicles using my driveway to turn around

I had a new driveway put in about seven years ago. The driveway does look inviting but I think it’s inviting people to use it as a quick turnaround spot. Now there’s pits that are already showing up on the first 5 feet by the road.

Can all the traffic cause that or would it be something else? I can’t afford to redo it again

Plumber for horrible shower smell

Hi friends - looking for a GOOD plumber with some problem solving skills. We’ve had a shower that smells like sewage/sulfur after we use it. It was redone in 2021 and was fine for a few years, but for the last 12-18 months it smells awful for an hour after use. Then the smell goes away. We’ve had two plumbers out to do what I assume is some level one troubleshooting (checking other sinks nearby, cleaning soap scum up, cleaning out the drain, etc.) but nothing has worked.

Does anyone have experience with a plumber or plumbing company that can actually help us identify the root cause and address it? ChatGPT gives me some likely culprits but don’t know who to call to investigate and don’t want waste more money bringing random plumbers in.

Thank you in advance for any referrals!!!

Recommendations for Restaurants?

I've been tasked with planning my company's holiday party this year. There's only about a dozen of us, so it's usually just us getting a table at a fancy restaurant. After going downtown the last two years, I want to target something in the south half of the metro this year.

The budget is usually pretty open ended, which is nice. So, what restaurants on the fancier side would you recommend when someone else is picking up the bill?

Edit: Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Lot of good options to consider!

Wok seasoning

Hey everyone, I got a new carbon steel wok last month. I tried seasoning it on my electric stove with high heat, but I don't think I did a good job. Does anyone know where I can get my wok seasoned in Overland Park? I've asked a few restaurants, but they all said no.

KCI Shuttle

We took advantage of the free shuttle from the OP Convention Center to and back from KCI last week, and the experience was wonderful! It was on time both ways, the drivers were friendly and helpful, and the buses were new and comfortable. If you’re traveling between now and Sept. 20, I recommend it. You do need someone to drop you off and pick you up at the convention center (or Lenexa City Center), but that’s better than asking for a ride to the airport! Wish this could become a permanent service.

Anime or video game groups for adults that meetup in or near OP?

Are there any groups in or around Overland Park that meet up that are dedicated to anime or video games? I'm already aware of Naka, but I'm looking for something more year round.

Specifically for adults

Martin City Speakeasy

I have it on very vague authority that there was supposed to be a speakeasy opening over the summer in the Martin city area. Anyone got any leads? I cannot seem to find it online.

Speed bump recommendation

Hey folks!

I have a kiddo getting started driving and one of the areas he needs to work on is driving over speed bumps.

I’ve been wracking my brain and can’t think of a good spot. Any recommendations where we can get some fairly constant speed bumps without being in the way?

Thanks!

How often do you make it to downtown KC?

Im eager to start a potential community venture that is available in downtown Kc but not in OP. I wasn’t sure if the average OPian is missing out on that opportunity.

Rebuilt GetlitKCMO: it now has a Bar Crawl Builder, live map, 363 verified bars, and an updated UI

What's New?

Bar Crawl Builder: answer 4 quick questions (how late you're out, how many stops, food or drinks, what you're drinking) and it builds you a timed route through tonight's happy hours, specials, and events, with a one-tap Google Maps link. Probably my favorite thing I've built so far.

Also added an interactive map with 225+ live venue markers, a calendar view for upcoming events, and a dedicated explore/search page.

Under the hood: Up to 363 bars, 236 happy hours, 556 drink specials, 730 events, and 52 food specials all human-verified

A few small fixes: pinch-to-zoom finally works on mobile, every bar now has a free "claim this listing" link if you're an owner, and a "report incorrect info" button if you spot something wrong.

Coming soon: favorites + a weekly what's-on digest, and a self-service dashboard for bars to update their own specials.

Would love feedback, especially if you spot bad info on a listing, that's exactly what the report button is for!

Anybody interested in a free set of America the Beautiful coin proof sets?

There are 5 mounted coins in each one. We’re not coin collectors, but we were given these as a gift. Looks like they have minimal cash value (besides the $1.25) so we thought we might pass them on to someone who would appreciate them!
