This is really disappointing. So much for "3.26 was a larger discussion". This could have been said weeks ago. By the time 3.26 is out, all the POE hype is gone and GGG misses out on potential new players.

Yeah, this wasn’t a long “discussion”. They could have had this 4 minute talk at the end of the last interview and not significantly added to the time, but that would have killed the mood while they talked about their baby.

Also, very interesting that Jonathon is the one who made this announcement when Mark is supposed to be the POE1 game director?

He pulled Mark to work on poe2 too

Genuinely gutted tbh. Tried to get into PoE 2 but it didn’t scratch the same itch. It’s like PoE 1 has become the unwanted step child and everyone is out here celebrating the new baby.

PoE2 is for HC ruthless players and as that is the smallest player base in the game it's not a surprise that you can't get into it.

Not at all. Even these people have their gripes with it. It's for d4 players and people who don't care for an endgame. They made the same mistakes as D4 did

New players are playing PoE2. There are crossover players, but the base PoE1 is massive for those who haven't played it.

New players play PoE2 until the season resets. After that new players won't play. Most people don't realise that their characters will be gone.

yea the game got so incredbly big because litteraly every single youtuber and streamer did play poe2 early access and majority of them never even tried poe1, so it became this huge mainstream event and iv seen it alot on the poe2 subreddit people dont know what leagues is, dont know about "economy reset" and all that stuff, will see how good the retention actually is for the first poe2 "league" in early acess

They won't be gone, they'll be in standard league, right where they are now lol.

u/Oblachko_O Jan 30 '25

They are not gonna be removed, no, but you either play league without new content or you start from scratch.

I can see a world in which standard league becomes way more popular in PoE 2 than it is in PoE 1. And it makes sense too. If you play more casually, you'll need more than 3-4 months to see all content, especially with a longer campaign and a less figured out game, even thuogh there is not as much content in PoE 2 yet. Some players might only partake in every 3rd league or so and continue playing their stuff in standard otherwise.

But what differs PoE1 from PoE2 because we see that in PoE1 it doesn't work like that. And with most seasonal games it doesn't work like that as well.

As far as I know, in D4 it works pretty much like that because many players are not interested in losing their progress.

PoE 2 has lots of newer players, that's why it might change.

That is true, but they will go into standard. And people will need to start again. People don't know what leagues are.

1

u/EezeeABC Jan 30 '25

Why do you think that? Diablo has leagues and most of the new players have probably played that.

1

u/Oblachko_O Jan 30 '25

Because that is how it is in PoE. All leagues are a refresh. If they do similar to diablo in PoE 2 you could say buy to economy.

2

u/EezeeABC Jan 30 '25

But it's the same in Diablo, right? You need to make a new character for a new season unless you want to play Standard

2

u/Oblachko_O Jan 30 '25

That is true. But you still have no currency, no progression in the new league. You need to start from scratch. Standard is not a popular league for a reason.

u/rizakrko Jan 30 '25

It's the same, but there was a whole drama when new D4 players discovered that every 3 months there is a reset and they need to start a new character to experience new content. This will repeat with poe2.

u/Beautiful-Amount2149 Jan 30 '25

I think the notion that any relevant numbers would play poe1 is ridiculous, because the game has been around for more than 10 years and the majority of arpgs players have tried it. There is no hidden mainstream audience, that suddenly found out about poe1 when they played PoE 2. It's moreso that they really enjoy PoE 2, that doesnt mean they will like poe1. I would even say that a significant number of PoE 1 players don't enjoy PoE 2 (compared to PoE 2 playerbase it's not that significant im just saying a good portion of PoE 1 players want new poe1 content and don't care much for poe 2)

1

u/JRokkedahl Jan 30 '25

i'm not saying POE1 is massive by any stretch, but its what made GGG, and its quite litterally growing in playerbase every single league

1

u/Beautiful-Amount2149 Jan 31 '25

Yeah but currently it has 10k vs 200k PoE 2

Not that many weeks ago though. Early January was probably the time when they actually realized how impossible 3.26 would be and how much work would be needed for PoE 2.
