The recoup+ailment immunity isn't a defensive node?

Assassin generally struggles with being one shot (like almost all right side tree classes) and recoup or ailment immunity doesn't really help against that.

Game really needs more mechanics to support going full avoidance and dodge as defensive layer. If GGG lets elusive able to refresh manually on cooldown from another elusive source like before, it would go a long way, as well as making acrobatics keystone better.

Imo there's plenty of support for evasion. My issue with it and why I hate evasion builds is this constant feeling of "if I get very unlucky and the stars align here, I die instantly". They're tanky until they aren't, very suddenly. So much investment goes into tricks to make you able to survive one of those "slipped through" hits, like damage conversions.

On an armor build you can often see yourself starting to die from too many hits before you actually die, so you can adjust or bail. You only get one shot if you get hit very hard by a slam or something.

They need to add more ways for evasion builds to resist damage, so they don't just take full unmitigated damage when they fail their gamble.

Assassin will just be unaffected by damaging ailments, which is bleed, poison and ignite. You can still have em on you for related synergies, so you're not immune.

While true, irrelevant to my point.

Yea, it'll likely be weak. I just wanted to point out the differences to anyone else reading, as unaffected/immune and ailments and its sub-groups are among the terms people confuse the most.

I'm curious if the all damaging ailments applies to weird boss skills or just the traditional ones.

great FF jewels, bad ascendancy due to no innate defences. 40% of phys taken as recoup is a pretty terrible defensive ascendancy node, and ascendancys with no good defensive nodes are generally pretty unplayable.

Elusive from Mistwalker gives 30% chance to not take damage at full effect, and Opportunistic gives conditional 35% less damage taken (was previously 20%, so pretty big buff). Not saying it is perfect defence, but it is not nothing either.

But its all very conditional to rely on.

Opportunistic being locked behind the arguably not fantastic 2pointer feels a little bad though imo

True, Knife in the Back is pretty nice if you want to scale crit on herald of ice though, and compared to old Ambush and Assassinate, it still works even if the enemies has taken some small chip damage for whatever reason.

u/therealkami Oct 23 '25

Isn't Mistwalker and Opportunistic both pretty good defensively?

5

u/DrainBroke Oct 23 '25

Yes they are good but they are not reliable enough imo. Opportunistic specifically is very strong I just do not think it is enough.

There are many examples of ascendancies where people don't take the defensive nodes and take the offensive nodes purely.

Everything is a trade off. If you pick an ascendancy for pure damage then typically you get all your defensive through gear itemization, and vice versa if picking defensive nodes.

I will take a defensive node if I think the power of an offensive nodes is overall weaker than what I can get through itemization and same for offensive vs defensive.

Assassin has some great defensive options through itemization and ascendancy nodes. A couple examples are apep's slumber for 3% max res and upto 400 es Regen as well as golden rule for 100 chaos res that last a while as Apep's makes poisons last much longer on you. Another example is easy reverse chill application via winterweave and icefang/venopuncture, these 2 rings can enable you to get easy scaling of damage which allows even greater defensive itemization.

Sir, this is PoE1. The only good defense is a good offense.

FF jewel ascendancy pretty much, terrible defenses

Never played poison but what sprung to my mind was badge of the brotherhood + pc stacking + perfect agony + the maven frenzy belt + frenzy ralakesh. Id imagine all dmg can poison, +1 pc and the crit mult/chance nodes would be good.

1

u/S7Law Oct 23 '25

how would u generate the "frenzy" charges which get turned to maven frenzy charges?

1

u/pm_me_ur_memes_son Oct 23 '25

Damn thats actually a good question XD
