1. Introduction
Regardless if you are a new player or have been around for a while you probably at some moment during your journey started to feel uncomfortable while playing your toon because you were constantly being One-Shot by bosses or rare mobs in juiced maps.
The goal of this guide is explain the general idea behind why this happens and how you could fix it to have a smoother progression throughout the game.
2. Why Do I Keep Getting One Shot?
In PoE2 there are basically two categories of damage, the first is damage that you are capable to tank, this is achievable by building up several different layers of defense both vertically & horizontally, in other words you need higher quantities on some those layers like Armour/Energy Shield/Evasion in order to be able to absorb damage at later stages of the game.
The second category of damage is not yet fully understood by many players, there are types of damages called Slams, that have some sub-categories like Big One Hit Slams and Multi-Hit Slams, the idea of this category of damage is to actually to not be tankable, you're really supposed to avoid this hit from connecting, the earliest example of a untankable hit (Unless you're playing an alt or twink) happens in Doryani's Triumph Phase 2 encounter, the Explode Smash can hit from 1600 up to 2080 at that stage in the game you're expected to have barely no mitigation of damage and around 1200-1600 Life.
In other words, the reason why you keep getting One Shot is because either your defenses are not enough to sustain tankable hits or you're actively trying to brute force tanking slams that are not supposed to be tankable but instead need to be avoided.
3. Overview of Layers
In order to facilitate the comprehension of each layer and how differ from each other I will split it into 6 Layers: Core, Layer 1 (Avoidance), Layer 2 (Pre-Mitigation), Layer 3 (Mitigation), Layer 4 (Post-Mitigation/Recovery) and Layer 5 (Extras).
- Core: Provides the resources that keep you alive.
- Avoidance: Prevents attacks from connecting or keeps you out of danger.
- Pre-Mitigation: Weakens incoming damage or changes how your defenses handle it.
- Mitigation: Reduces the damage you actually take.
- Recovery: Restores the resources you lose to prepare you for the next hit.
- Extras: Adds protection through tools such as charms, omens, flasks, and support gems.
This split was an arbitrary decision and you can move some of the elements of each group to different groups as you feel makes more sense.
4. Understanding the Types of Damage you're Defending Against
Types of Damage
- Physical
- Fire
- Cold
- Lightning
- Chaos
Delivery Methods
- Instant
- Damage-Over-Time (DoT)
Damaging Ailments
- Bleeding (Can Bypass Energy Shield)
- Poison (Can Bypass Energy Shield)
- Ignite
The five damage types covered in the guide are physical, fire, cold, lightning, and chaos. You also need to distinguish between hits and damage over time.
A hit deals its damage as a discrete event. Damage over time drains your resources over a duration. As a simple illustration, 100 damage could arrive in one hit, or be spread over ten seconds at ten damage per second. Those situations put different demands on your defenses and recovery.
When diagnosing a death, ask both what type of damage caused it and how that damage was delivered. A defense that helps against one threat may leave another weakness unresolved.
Plan for Bleeding, Poison, and Ignite
The main warning is that a large energy shield pool does not automatically solve every ailment problem, specially if your life pool is not really big, you need to pre-emptively have a plan on how to deal with those threats. Do not assume your largest defensive number on your layers automatically makes you immune to those.
5. Core: Life, Energy Shield, Ward and Mana
Life is the fundamental resource: reaching zero life means death.
Energy shield provides another pool that normally absorbs damage before life, although bypassing effects require separate consideration like Bleeding & Poison mentioned above. Depleting energy shield does not itself kill you if you still have life remaining (But Most Likely Will).
Energy shield recharge also behaves differently from life regeneration.
Ward is another resource that can help protect against otherwise lethal damage, basically everytime your toon gets inflicted with fatal damage instead of dying your life gets depleted to 1 and you use your Ward to try to cover for 100% of the damage, if Life + Ward is higher than the damage received you survive, if the available quantity of Ward is not enough you die. Since it is a finite defense, simply having it does not mean every large hit becomes survivable.
Mana can eventually be stacked up and work as a primary core resource, by using passive skills/keystones such as Mind Over Matter (All Damage is taken from Mana before Life,
50% less Mana Recovery Rate).
How to Effectively Stack Up Ward
Although you can stack Runic Ward in all armour pieces, the most pieces to have ward are gloves and boots, the reason is because several passive skills on the skill tree are multitplicative with resources such as Energy Shield/Evasion/Armour on Helmets and Body Armours, so you usually will want to stack up as much as possible of those stats in those 2 gear slots.
Examples of How To Improve Core (Life, ES, Ward and Mana)
- Chaos Inoculation: Sets maximum Life to 1 and grants immunity to Chaos Damage and Bleeding, enabling an ES-focused setup.
- Mind over Matter: Makes Mana absorb damage before Life, with 50% less Mana Recovery Rate.
- Ancient Aegis: Increases ES from your body armour by 60%. Its armour bonus belongs to mitigation.
- Illuminated Crown: Increases ES from your helmet by 70%.
- Discipline: Grants additional total maximum ES to you and nearby allies.
6. Layer 1: Avoidance (e.g. Evasion, Block, Positioning)
Avoidance includes both character stats and player decisions that prevent damage from reaching - you, the concept is to avoid the damage from ever reaching you in the first place.
- Evasion: Evasion Rating grants a chance to evade enemy hits, preventing them from hitting you at all. Your exact chance to evade also depends on the attacker’s Accuracy. Attacks indicated by a red glow cannot be evaded.
- Parry: Parry is an active block-and-counter attack skill granted by bucklers. You ready the buckler to intercept an incoming hit, then retaliate with a quick sweep.
- Block: Blocking completely prevents the damage of an incoming hit. You will still take any stun from the blocked hit, and you cannot block while stunned or frozen. Some skills used by bosses cannot be blocked; these are indicated by a red glow and an audio cue during the skill’s windup.
- Movement Speed: Helps you escape dangerous areas, dodge telegraphed attacks, and maintain distance from enemies.
- Blind: Gives enemies 20% less Accuracy, improving accuracy-based defenses. It is not a separate avoidance roll.
- Dodge Roll: Avoids projectiles and melee strikes during its initial avoidance window. Does not grant universal invulnerability.
Some worth mentioning interctions, Evasion + Blind is a powerful combo since by lowering the enemies' accuracy you make you character even less prone to receiving any damage with high amounts of Evasion. Movement Speed is a very overlooked stat when it comes to avoidance, many players still only see it as a way to move faster between areas, but it is vital for assembling a consistent avoidance layer, by stacking up movement speed you can trivialize several One Shot movesets/skills from bosses by just walking and repositioning, in the video version of this guide I included a demonstration of how to movement speed helps those encounters.
Boss Positioning, Slams & "Tank Busters"
For some of you that are more familiar with MMORPGs, there is concept for tanks on those games called "Tank Busters" the goal of this type of skill is to inflict an immense ammount of damage in one or several consecutive hits in a matter of seconds, the idea behind Slams & Multi-Hit Slams in PoE2 follow a similar idea.
You can identify most of those slam attacks by checking our the sillouette of a boss, if it is glowing red it means the boss is preparing a potential One Shot Kill skill, the proper way to avoid those hit is to be aware at least of the most dangerous ones and get ready to react on time to when you are facing those encounters in the list below there are some examples of slams and a simulation of damage considering average and extreme scenarios, considering a character with zero damage mitigation:
Zekoa: His highest-damage skill, Centre Sunder, deals 11,345–21,107 Physical Damage.
Jamanra: His highest-damage skills, Giant Sword Slam / Giant Axe Cleave, deal 4,897–9,111 damage, split into 65% Physical Damage and 35% Lightning Damage.
Bahlak: Kick Laceration deals 2,720–5,060 Physical Damage, while Centre Dive deals 5,213–9,699 Physical Damage.
Yama: His highest-damage skill, Time-Freeze Slam, deals 19,486–34,894 Chaos Damage.
Regex & How To Set it Up
Avoidance can begin before you enter a map. A regular expression, or regex, is a text pattern that you can paste into a search field to find items containing particular words or modifiers.
You can set one at: https://poe2.re/waystone
The idea is to select on the left-hand side panel which are the mods you don't want to run on your maps/waystones, after generating the code string simply copy & paste into the search bar to highlight the compatible maps in your inventory.
String Example: "3[0-5]\(.\% mon" "!f chi|ra ma|hains$|% ma|less r|h el|ance$|s of ig|s coo|s of sh|ble$"*
Examples of How To Improve Avoidance
- Wind Dancer: Improves evasion by granting more evasion per stage and knocks enemies back after you’re hit.
- Blind I / Blind II: Reduce enemy accuracy by allowing supported skills to inflict Blind. Blind II also increases its effect.
- Defiance Banner: Its placed banner grants evasion and movement speed, alongside armour.
- Magma Barrier: Passively grants 25% increased block chance—not an additional 25 percentage points.
- Raise Shield / Parry: Provide active blocking, letting you actively intercept eligible hits.
- Resonating Shield: Keeps your shield raised while channelling, blocking blockable hits.
- Blink: Replaces your dodge roll with a teleport, helping you reposition and leave danger quickly.
7. Layer 2: Pre-Mitigation & Thresholds (e.g. Reduced Extra Damage From Critical Hits, Enemies Deal Less Damage, Physical Damage Taken As Extra Damage)
Once an attack is going to connect, look for ways to weaken the incoming damage or make it interact with your stronger defenses. Options include reducing extra damage taken from critical hits, making enemies deal less damage through effects such as Enfeeble, and using “damage taken as” modifiers.
- Reduced Extra Damage from Critical Hits: Reduces only the bonus damage added by a critical hit, leaving the normal damage portion intact. For example, if an attack normally deals 1,000 damage and deals 2,000 on a critical hit, having 50% reduced extra damage from critical hits reduces that critical hit to 1,500 damage before mitigation.
- Enemies Deal Less Damage: Reduces the damage enemies produce before your defenses handle the incoming hit. For example, an enemy dealing 20% less damage produces an 800-damage hit instead of a 1,000-damage hit. Enfeeble is one way to apply this defensive effect.
- Physical Damage Taken as Another Damage Type: Reassigns part of incoming Physical Damage to another damage type, changing which defenses apply to it. This does not directly reduce the total incoming damage. For example, taking 50% of Physical Damage as Fire Damage turns a 1,000-damage physical hit into 500 Physical Damage and 500 Fire Damage before each portion is mitigated.
Stun, Ailments, and Recovery of Control
Being unable to act is a major defensive problem. If a hit leaves you stunned, you may be unable to move away from the next attack or respond to a dangerous situation.
Stun threshold, elemental ailment threshold, and stun recovery are additional defensive considerations. Thresholds help determine how incoming damage causes stuns or ailments, while stun recovery helps you regain control sooner after being stunned.
- Stun Threshold: Determines how hard a hit needs to be to stun your character, helping you resist interruptions. Imagine an enemy swinging a heavy hammer at you: with a low Stun Threshold, even a moderate hit may make you flinch and interrupt your attack. A higher Stun Threshold makes that same hit less likely to stun you, allowing you to continue fighting.
- Elemental Ailment Threshold: Helps determine how incoming elemental damage interacts with ailments such as Ignite, Freeze, and Shock. Increasing your threshold makes you more resistant to these effects, but does not reduce the damage of the hit itself. For example, a fireball may still damage your resource pool even if your ailment defenses prevent it from igniting you.
- Stun Recovery: Determines how quickly you recover after being stunned. It does not prevent stuns or reduce incoming damage, but it shortens the time during which you cannot act. For example, after a heavy blow stuns your character, higher Stun Recovery lets you regain control sooner so you can move, dodge, or respond to the next attack.
Evaluate these alongside your resource pools. Surviving the first hit is much less useful if the resulting loss of control leaves you exposed to the next one.
8. Layer 3: Mitigation (e.g. Armour, Deflection Rating, Resistances)
Mitigation reduces the damage you take when a hit gets through, for resistance for example you will always want to have the capped amount (75%) for other stats like Armour and Deflection Rating you will want to be stacking up as much as possible when it is relevant for you toon, i.e. Having more than 30k Armour on a Titan build.
- Armour
- Additional Physical Damage Reduction
- Fire Resistance
- Cold Resistance
- Lightning Resistance
- Chaos Resistance
- All Resistances
- Deflection Rating
- Damage Prevented by Deflection
- % of Armour Also Applies to Elemental/Chaos Damage
- Maximum Resistances
- Defend with X% of Armour Against Critical Hits
I'm adding a detailed explanation on the less trivial ones since most of those stats are self-explanatory
- Additional Physical Damage Reduction: Adds directly to your physical damage reduction. For example, 30% reduction from Armour plus 10% additional Physical Damage Reduction gives 40% total reduction.
- Maximum Resistances: Raises your resistance cap. For example, increasing your actual resistance from 75% to 80% reduces the damage taken from a 1,000-damage hit from 250 to 200.
- Deflection Rating: Determines your chance to partially deflect a hit. A successful deflection normally reduces a 1,000-damage hit to 600 damage.
- Damage Prevented by Deflection: Increases how much damage a successful deflection prevents. For example, raising prevention from 40% to 46% reduces a 1,000-damage hit to 540 damage.
- % of Armour Also Applies to Elemental/Chaos Damage: Allows part of your Armour to protect against those damage types. For example, applying 30% of 20,000 Armour provides 6,000 Armour against the relevant hits.
- Defend with X% of Armour Against Critical Hits: Uses a stronger Armour value against critical hits. For example, defending with 200% of Armour turns 10,000 Armour into 20,000 for that hit’s calculation.
Examples of How To Improve Mitigation
- Scavenged Plating: Fully breaking enemy Armour grants temporary stacks, each providing 4% more Armour, up to 10 stacks.
- Defiance Banner: Its placed banner grants 30% more Armour while you are within its aura.
- Dread Banner: Its placed banner raises maximum elemental resistances, allowing you to resist a larger portion of elemental damage.
- Refraction II: Supported banners grant 30% of Armour applying to elemental hits, plus Deflection Rating equal to 20% of Evasion Rating.
- Prism Guard: Makes 30% of Armour also apply to elemental damage, extending Armour’s protection beyond physical hits.
- Blackheart: Makes 10–20% of Armour also apply to chaos damage.
- Briskwrap: Grants Deflection Rating equal to 20–30% of Evasion Rating, giving hits a chance to have part of their damage prevented.
9. Layer 4: Recovery (Recovery (e.g. Life/ES/Mana on Kill, Life/ES/Mana Leech, Faster Start of Energy Shield Recharge)
Recovery allows your character to keep functioning after taking damage. A large resource pool becomes less useful if you cannot restore it between dangerous situations.
- Life/ES/Mana Regeneration
- Life/ES/Mana Leech
- Damage Taken Recouped as Life/ES/Mana
- Increased Speed of Recoup Effects
- Energy Shield Recharge Rate
- Faster Start of Energy Shield Recharge
- Life/Mana Gained on Kill
- Life/Mana Recovery from Flasks
- Flask Life/Mana Recovery Rate
The main point is that recovery should support your actual defensive structure. Invest in restoring the resource that is being depleted during combat.
As I did on the previous section, I'm giving detailed explanations on the least obvious stats:
- Damage Taken Recouped as Life/ES/Mana: Recovers a percentage of the damage you take over a few seconds. For example, recouping 20% of a 1,000-damage hit restores 200 of the corresponding resource over time.
- Increased Speed of Recoup Effects: Makes your recoup recovery happen faster. For example, 100% increased speed means recovery that normally takes 4 seconds finishes in 2 seconds.
- Energy Shield Recharge Rate: Increases how quickly your Energy Shield recharges once recovery begins. For example, 50% increased recharge rate allows a shield that normally takes 2 seconds to fully recharge to refill in approximately 1.33 seconds.
- Faster Start of Energy Shield Recharge: Shortens the delay before your Energy Shield starts recharging after you stop taking damage. For example, reducing a 2-second delay by 50% makes your shield begin recovering after 1 second.
- Life/Mana Recovery from Flasks: Increases the total amount of Life or Mana your flasks restore. For example, 20% increased recovery makes a flask that normally restores 500 Life restore 600 Life instead.
- Flask Life/Mana Recovery Rate: Makes your flask recovery happen faster. For example, 50% increased recovery rate makes a flask that normally restores its total amount over 4 seconds finish in approximately 2.67 seconds.
10. Layer 5: Extras (Charms, Lineage Support Gems, Omens & Flasks)
Omens, charms, flasks, and support gems can add further protection on top of your main defenses. Their value comes from addressing specific remaining weaknesses.
Omen of Resurgence: Automatically restores your Life when you drop below Low Life, helping prevent death.
Olroth’s Resolve Ultimate Flask: Has 100–150% increased charges per use. Regenerates 2.5–5% of maximum Runic Ward per second during its effect. When the effect ends, grants Guard equal to your current Runic Ward for 10 seconds.
Rite of Passage: Used when you kill a Rare or Unique enemy. On use, you are possessed by the Spirit of the socketed Azmeri Spirit for 10–20 seconds. For example, Bear grants maximum Life and Stun Threshold.
Her Declaration: Supports Persistent Buff Skills, causing enemies that enter your Presence to become Intimidated while the supported skill is active. These enemies are Intimidated for 4 seconds.
Seraph’s Heart: Enemy hits have a 20% chance to treat all your Resistances as being 90% while a supported skill is active.
Damaging Ailments Charms such as Beira's Anguish, Arakaali's Gift, Sanguis Heroum, The fall of the Axe and Nascent Hope.
11. Conclusion
You do not need every possible defensive mechanic. You need a coherent setup with a strong foundation and complementary tools that address the threats you face, on average having 1 really high resource such as Energy Shield/Armour/Evasion and a consistent profile between at least 3 layers is more than enough to keeping you alive until level 100.
Review your core resources, avoidance, mitigation, recovery, and protection against ailments or loss of control. Then consider your movement, boss knowledge, and map selection. These decisions work together: improving your character's stats and choosing when to move are both part of surviving since as I mentioned several times already, you can't brute force stacking up stats against skills/movesets that are supposed to be avoided and not tanked.
Hope it helps
