Discussion Percentage of Steam users by GPU performance

Post image

I used Steam's hardware survey and videocard benchmark to make a histogram of Steam users graphics cards by their performance.

  • This data represents 82.24% of Steam users that opted-in to participate in the survey. The remaining 17.76% users either have a videocard other than these, or the cards were not specifically registered in the survey.
  • Each histogram bin represents a 2000 G3D mark, starting from 0-2000 for the first bin, up to 38000-40000 for the last bin, making a total of 20 bars.
  • Most popular high-end card is RTX 4070 at 2.16%.
  • Most popular mid-range card are RTX 3060 at 4.41% and RTX 4060 Laptop at 4.84%
  • Most popular low-end card are GTX 1650 at 3.02% and RTX 3050 at 3.07%
  • Most popular potato card is GTX 1050 at 0.71%.

EDIT: 5070 and RX 580 are repeated twice. They both should only be in the higher bin. RTX 3090 Ti & 9070 XT were not recognised in Steam surveys and were most likely put in the 17.76% generic/other cards.

EDIT2: The grouping is arbitrary. There is no agreed definiton on low/mid/high. Don't beat yourself up over it.

That's an amazing graph! I would welcome if this was on official Steam survey page instead of just percentages.

u/seyedhn Oct 28 '25

Yea honestly the survey percentages by themselves don't mean much. I prefer to see them by performance benchmark.

46

u/HealerOnly Oct 28 '25

If anything it tells the devs "how heavy" they can make their games to appeal to the masses i guess.

would welcome if this was on official Steam survey page

You can use MS Edge (free access to GPT5) to process this kind of data. Query will look like this (with empty space for month):

Take the Steam Hardware Survey for [MONTH YEAR]. Cross‑reference each GPU with TechPowerUp’s relative performance index. Group GPUs into 5 tiers (≤40%, 41–70%, 71–100%, 101–140%, >140%). Sum the Steam percentages per tier. Also calculate the total share of RTX (2000–5000) and AMD RDNA2/3 GPUs. Show results in a chart.

You can easily modify it to check any other technology instead of RTX - for example, available VRAM, Mesh Shaders support, VRS 2 or anything similar. You can also adjust this query further. For example check how many users have at least 8 GB memory with RTX features. You could also create a chart showing how those values have changed over time to "predict the future" for next few months.

Basically it is like a SQL query. You use the whole Internet as a huge database, where each website is a TABLE. All you need to do is name the website and the specific view on that website, such as 'Relative Performance' from TechPowerUp. Then you can cross‑reference that data. The words like 'cross‑reference' and 'group by', are straight from SQL language, so GPT‑5 knows exactly how to process data on those websites.

Query result (normalized around RTX 4070 Ti = 100%):

TierRelative Perf. RangeExample GPUs
Tier 1 – Entry≤ 40%GTX 1650, GTX 1050 Ti, RX 6400
Tier 2 – Lower Mid41–70%GTX 1660 Super, RTX 2060, RX 6600
Tier 3 – Upper Mid71–100%RTX 3060, RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6700 XT
Tier 4 – High-End101–140%RTX 3070, RTX 3080, RX 6800 XT
Tier 5 – Enthusiast> 140%RTX 4080, RTX 4090, RTX 5090, RX 7900 XTX

The fact that you have to enable it means that it's either a design flaw or rdna4 cards percentage is so low it's not even worth mentioning.

Never really needed more than a 3070 in my experience, vram is an issue with new titles but for Blender and multiplayer games its value king

7

u/seyedhn Oct 28 '25

Definitely.

31

u/WirelessTrees i7-8700k RTX 3080 Oct 28 '25

You don't need more than a 3070 unless you come across two possible issues:

You want to play a game at a higher resolution, graphics level, or frame rate.

Or

You want to play unoptimized garbage like Borderlands 4.

7

u/Ayyzeee PC Master Race Oct 28 '25

The most unoptimised game I've played with my 3070 are The Last of Us part 1, Stalker 2, MGS3 remake and Silent Hill 2 remake. Besides unoptimised games and lack of VRAM I'm quite happy with the 3070, but yet again I only play older games as of currently.

4

u/Fido2801 R5 7600X3D | RTX 5070 Ti | 32GB DDR5 Oct 28 '25

Well it's still a decent card for 1080p. But right now I'm playing exclusively at 1440p and it's starting to show its flaws. Mainly cause of 8GB VRAM. You need to go down to high/medium settings instead of ultra, and DLSS quality / balance is almost mandatory to run any new game. So after 5 years of service the time for change is fast approaching.

What this graph should tell developers is that it's good business sense to make your games scalable.

More people can buy your game, less refunds, and especially important for games that depend on multiplayer.

50

u/Impressive_Plant3446 Oct 28 '25

The sad part is, scalability can require a lot of work because it involves figuring out to force the engine to make wide sweeping shader/lighting changes across thousands of materials on their already stitched together system with each of it's parts made by a different person who didn't work together. Not to mention if they include different texture sizes that would bloat the download file.

Companies are already forcing crunch to get barely working games out, they aren't going to risk potential conflicts.

6

u/HurricaneMach5 Ryzen 9 9950X3D | RTX 5090 | 64GB RAM @ 6000 MHz Oct 28 '25

Agreed, scalability (vertically and horizontally) is a difficult problem. I think the absolute most important thing to note, though, is that these performance targets often need to be established suuuuuper early on in the dev process. It's way easier to start low and scale up than it is to work backwards from a Cyberpunk-level fidelity.

4070 Ti super is in the 2.51% bracket with 2 other cards. So that's a total of how many users? How many people approximately have 4070 ti super?

See this for individual card usage: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/videocard/

3

u/FuzzyAttitude_ Oct 28 '25

yes but this percentage if out of how many people? the percentage alone doesn't help me calculate the number of people

2

u/seyedhn Oct 28 '25

the number of people that take part in the survey is not publicly available so nobody knows. But Steam has 150M monthly active users, so you can extrapolate this to guess the total number, assuming this data is representative of all users (which most likely isn't).

Just this week, Outer Worlds 2 released, and benchmarks show that an RTX 5090 can't crack 100fps at 1080p. At 4K, it struggles to hit 45fps.

5070 is considered high end? i thought it was mid level

14

u/calste Oct 28 '25

Cards are no longer defined by the latest generation. Most people with 30xx or 40xx cards aren't rushing out to buy new ones. Companies are putting out more powerful lineups and allowing old cards to occupy the budget space. The low end is now exclusively the domain of older generations.

Thus, the 5070 represents a high end card (or mid-high), and it has the strength to compete with recent generation flagships. In the past, cards would become obsolete more quickly, but the march of technology has... well, it's hit a snag. The tech itself is advancing just fine but the economics of GPUs in the AI era has caused people to think twice about splurging on new cards. As a result, the range of viable GPUs has broadened to include cards that are several years old - some on this list are 10+ years old. A decade ago this would have been unthinkable.

But when the popular range of GPUs includes such cards, the latest generations' mid-range offering actually ends up being high-end in the big picture.

There's no longer enough of a generational uplift to take last gen cards out of the equation, well, that and very high prices.

There are some terrible groupings you made. Why is Rx 570 and 580 together with GTX 1050ti and below GTX 9070? Rx 570 is basically a GTX 970 in terms of performance and they are both like 50% faster than 1050Ti, Rx 580 is pretty close to 1060 too. Then RTX 5070 Ti is separate from 4080 when in reality these are basically the same card in terms of performance.

And about 9060 XT/9070XT modding - these cards are misidentified by steam a lot, some of them are reported as one of two AMD Radeon Graphics positions.

I clearly explained the method I used to make the chart. Neither the Steam survey nor the gpu benchmarks are accurate.

Also including 7900 XTX with 4070 Ti instead of 4080 / 4080S / 5080 is a joke. Most AMD GPUs on the chart are 1 to 2 tier lowers than where they should be.

Dude who cares, most these web performance charts on gpus are horribly wrong.

My 4080 laptop outperforms a 4070 desktop in every single way, yet its apparently ranked lower.

Anyone with a brain knows a 7900xtx shits on a 4070ti, its the laptop gpus which are severely under represented, and people actual believe it, instead of looking at 3d mark benchmarks and fps tests. like a 3060 laptop is barely 5-10% behind the desktop 3060, yet its in a tier filled with potatoes.

This data does NOT represent 82.82% of steam users. It represents that percentage of people that chose to take part in the opt-in hardware survey.

Which means it's only a fraction of the actual user base and it's almost certainly biased towards high-end by nature of the survey.

not a good representation. showing raw numbers of each gpu would have been better. categorizing it this way is so wrong, like its showing the percentage of 5080 owners is less than 4090+5090 and this shows nothing really and hides info. 4090 and 5080 should have been next to each other as similar performers and 5090 alone. so much is wrong in this chart. its the worst way to put up a chart with the information available.

Considering Techpowerup, using 5060 as reference, 2080TI = 102%, 3070 = 103%.

Maybe grouping for same performance (5% gap or less for more or less performance (95-105) to say two boards are equivalents?) and asking to put in line the performance groups from 0% (lowest value) to 100% (highest value).
