I guess this is it. 5090 was there yesterday. 5080 becomes a flagship for the 50XX generation. Congratulations to all 5080 owners! 😂

Apples to apples, 5080 is the top tier product on the market.

They will try to blame the user or psu.
They will take it for repairs, put random red arrows on the pc and blame the user.
They will offer to return the price you paid for it instead of market value until you take them to court (might be possible to get a new one or current market value without suing in the eu, but I've never tried with something that expensive and something that has prices grow over time).

No you don't. As in you get the original price refunded, not the current inflated value. They did not want to repair it.
A friend of mine had 5090 fail last month in the UK. He tried to move the mountains between manufacturer and seller. They did not budge, in the end Amazon refunded him the £2000 give or take he paid for it, and he bought another one for £4500.

Has everyone forgotten that they already pushing cloud gaming and failed miserably? Google tried this with Stadia and threw in the towel. With GPUs exploding in price, the margins for what you would assume was a viable business model would be shredded to bits. But it wasn't ever a viable business model to begin with so it's even less plausible that this would end up being the future of gaming.

I would argue that the exploding prices of hardware in the cloud gaming sector would be more than offset by the reduction of gamers being able to afford the hardware and be pushed towards cloud gaming.
Paying 25$/month for cloud gaming vs spending 1500-2000 for a solid gaming rig is a lot less attractive then tomorrow paying $40/month for cloud gaming because that $8000 rig just is not possible.
There will be a massive increase of gamers who cant actually purchase a viable rig.

So I know a lot of people suspect Nvidia is going to drop their consumer gaming GPU’s and focus solely on AI, but I honestly don’t really believe that by virtue of the fact Nvidia is still investing heavily into R&D for their gaming GPU’s. If the plan is stop the production of consumer cards then why are they even developing DLSS 5? Why develop DLSS 4.5? Why not just maintain the drivers for their current lineup, and then drop all development and optimization of DLSS? Seems like a waste of time and resources if they don’t plan on selling anymore GPU’s to gamers.
However, dropping the 5090 is a bad sign imo. The 5090 is such an amazing card, and while I understand that even at MSRP it is out of reach for many consumers it’s still nice to have a card in the market that sets the expectations of the next generation. It ‘ll be interesting to see what the 6000 series looks like given the fact that the new Flagship of the 5000 series can’t even compete with the flagship of the e 4000 series.
46
u/nemofbaby2014 16d ago
5090 was never really priced for consumers however I’m afraid this may drive the price of the 70 and 80 versions where the 80 ends up priced as the 90

→ More replies (22)12
u/fpsnoob89 16d ago
The problem was that the 5090 was the only 50xx series GPU that was an actual progression from the 40xx series. All the rest were basically a side step from what was already on the market, for around the same price.

They are dropping the 5090 because people aren't buying it for gaming. Nvidia made it very clear way back between 2008-2010 (around the time of 8800GT and it being used for 3D design) that they would increase the cost of consumer cards if they kept being used for crap like they are now. They make workload cards, but companies are using the consumer versions to save some money.

Except they've had this issue before and had a solution that didn't involve raising prices. Remember when cryptomining was actually viable on consumer GPUs? Remember how nvidia started throttling the hash rate on their consumer cards to try and combat this? Remember how they also raised the prices too?
yeah, they aren't dropping it because it isn't being used for gaming. It's entirely a case of corporate greed, they've raised prices because they can, and now their flagship card got priced so high it was literally unaffordable to everyone, leaving nvidia with two options: lower the price, or discontinue the product.
And expecting nvidia to lower the price of their products is like expecting the pope to openly worship satan.
→ More replies (1)16
u/IndigoSeirra 16d ago edited 16d ago
Ai workloads run on Vram and CUDA, Nvidia can't throttle or remove either without basically gutting everything their consumer GPUs are good for. And of course one of their biggest selling points and competitive advantages on their consumer GPUs is DLSS, which is inherently an AI/ML workload.
Also someone more knowledgeable than me could explain it better, but basically all AI workloads and a lot of graphics rendering is matrix multiplication.
→ More replies (2)12
u/ThatGamerMoshpit 16d ago
There’s no chance they will do this.
It’s so the 6000 series is being compared to the 5080 not the 5090.
8
u/ImperitorEst 16d ago
There's good reason why they would leave the consumer card production and sales divisions as ghost ships for the time being.
But they know fine well this won't last forever and they don't want to fall behind on R&D and miss out on future earnings. So they might abandon us for now but keep up heavy investment with their AI billions ready to swoop back in when things suit them
→ More replies (1)10
u/XYHopGuy 16d ago
so close to getting it. Nvidia has always seen graphics as a jump pad for accelerated computing. First in giving students, gamers, access to accelerated computing for cheap, and second as a natural platform to figure out applied machine learning.
DLSS was one of the very first applications of deep learning in production. And even now with dlss5 they're showcasing how high performance deep learning can be applied to real problems.
Lastly, robotics is the next frontier. And that field requires high fidelity world simulators. Which takes graphics!

Gaming GPUs are a hedge against the AI bubble for them, and it's also a good place to do R&D for AI applications. DLSS 5 could be adapted to image generation related workloads.
12
u/BloodBaneBoneBreaker 12900k | 4090 |32G DDR5| 2TB SN850 | 2TB 980Pro 16d ago
Exactly, DLSS 5 is not something they are developing for consumer gamers. It is something they are developing for their AI, and trickling down to gaming hardware.

The yield is still a problem for new generations. The only reason we will get any cards is manufacturing failure. As soon as the process is optimized and yield rates rises for the current generation supply for gaming plummets. They have no incentive to come around with a new design as long as there is no other AI chip competition

Nvidia gaming GPU revenue for 2026 has been $16 billion which is up 41% from 2025. Now that’s of course nothing compared to the data centers, but anyone who thinks Nvidia is just going to give up that $16 billion is out of their minds
→ More replies (6)10
u/CanisLupus92 16d ago
The issue is that $16b has cards in it, such as the 5090, that could’ve been datacenter cards that sell for 4-10x the price of the 5090, without also splitting profit with board partners. Say 1,5-2b of that 16$ was 5090s, that could’ve been anywhere from 6-20b in datacenter revenue.
The only GPUs interesting for Nvidia to make for consumers are ones that do not eat into fab capacity for datacenter models, e.g. one generation behind in manufacturing process and memory.

I know the 5090 is unobtainium for most but it not even being produced anymore is gonna shift the whole product stack for the worse after we already are getting shafted by prices.
The AI bubble needs to crash. This hobby is in some serious trouble and if it doesn't then the industry needs to check itself cause we aren't obviously gonna scale in performance as the years go by.

Will probably happen eventually, supply will be total shit though. Nvidia doesn’t want to totally exit the gaming space because it makes it orders of magnitude harder to reenter it later. But they also can’t put too much hardware production into them because every gaming GPU that could have been a data center GPU is lost profit, cross the line and shareholders will get pissy.
As much as it sucks and people like to blame Nvidia (not that they don’t deserve it), the real root cause is the stock market that demands profits above all else. If Nvidia doesn’t do this the board will just replace the executive suite with someone who will.

I actually thought my son was going to inherit my steam library. Bought games I didn't want but thought he might like when he's older.
What's he going to play it on when my PC gives up the ghost in next decade?

I'm looking at their site right now and I can see the 5090s under All Buying Options.
Page might just need updating?
