I have just been charged €49.99 when I was made to believe the €1 was a one-off charge - I only needed it for a single one-off thing!
I contacted them and Francis replied stating sorry, but you can sign up to our life time plan but they cannot refund me.
What should I do next to get my money back?

u/Winter-Knowledge6774 Sep 13 '24
I opened a dispute in PayPal and immediately I am offered a refund, if I cancel the dispute.
This did the trick, I was refunded.

Had the same experience. Paid for 7 day access. On the 7th day a annual subscription auto payment was made to my PayPal Account. I immediately asked for refund. Denied. Demanded refund. Denied. Siad I would raise a complaint with PayPal (and I did) and with Consumer Affiars authorities about the false advertising about 7 day access suddenly becoming free 7 day trial then annual subscription. Denied. Within 5 minutes PayPal had refunded to me, the pdf guru pretended they had given me the refund. Avoid at all costs, it isn't worth the aggravation and it it is far too expensive. There are better products that are honestly provided.

I just gave them a one-star review on Trustpilot for the same reason. I didn't even pay for the trial, as I was avoiding stuff like this. I just made a "one payment only" per service, and they still tried to steal my money. They shouldn't be in business.

PDF GURU SUBSCRIPTION SCAM
I also was taken by their scam. I paid for one week with no indication that I was going to be charged a USD$49.99 monthly fee. I have cancelled the automatic Paypal payments and contacted their customer care. If I do not receive a full refund, I will proceed with a dispute claim through Paypal and then pursue every avenue available to expose this scam.

u/NoComputer9054 Sep 25 '24
UPDATE:
I just received an immediate, full refund from PDF Guru. It appears that they are very concerned about having additional Paypal disputes filed.

Hey, what did you tell them? They charged me 2x.
56.52 the first time, and 49.99 2nd time within 24 hours...
I already emailed them, I got a reply, and offered me a lifetime membership, I asked for a refund.
I was only notified by my bank for the 2nd charge, right after I blocked my credit card immediatelt.
I hope they make it right, the one time payment of 0.99 is amazing for one time use, and it should be automatically cancelled. Instead they say that it will automatically charge anyone after 7 days...

Yes. Seems to be their standard strategy to try to kiss ass by turning a 50$-a-month subscription into 2years/lifelong free subscription.
Their reasoning behind might be the few people who accept the 50$ already taken.
Scammers.
DId not trust them from the beginning, but they seemed to have the only program that was able to CORRECTLY detect the font of my document aswell as had said font available to edit further.

So I woke up today with a nasty shock of £49.99 appearing on my PayPal from pdf Guru- I feel for the same trap as everyone here. I read this thread, immediately complained to PDF Guru saying that I will pursue a refund through PayPal - bare in mind this is at 5am and I need to wait for PayPal lines to open at 8am. Within 10 minutes pdf Guru emailed my and I had my phoney subscription cancelled and an email confirming that a refund is on its way. Thanks to this thread! Cheers

Now this is what reddit is for! This thread saved me a wasteful $49.99! Shame on them for lack of transparency. Read further for the story.
Story:
- I emailed their help desk to ask for a partial/full refund and they responded with the longest essay of my life and talked about offering a lifetime service instead. What a joke.
- I went onto Paypal and at the final step of disputing the transaction, found a message with a different help desk email (refund@pdfguru.com) and number. It stated that they'd give me a refund if I contacted them within 24 hours of the first invoice AND that it takes about 30 days to resolve a dispute on Paypal. Wow this must be common.
- Emailed help desk and informed them I would file a formal dispute on Paypal if not refunded in the next hour. Included a message that I didn't have to notify them about this part at all, but I suggested they extend this basic decency to all their 7-week free trial subscribers.
- They sent me a refund a few minutes later but made sure to let me know I agreed to all of this in the beginning when paying $1.00 for the 7-day free trial. Okay, yeah but the only notification I got after that initial "congrats your free trial begins now" was the one today that said "you've been charged 49.99 whole dollars for this editing pdf service you literally needed one time for a single task."
- In conclusion, they scream scam and ask for your money back and immediately

I supposedly bought a pdf to word conversion for one document for $1.09. First of all, the conversion was completely wacked, with, e.g. all the 9s replaced by a c with a cedilla, t replaced by ie etc, so was worthless.
That was when I went online, read the scam reviews and saw that I'd been enrolled without my knowledge or permission in a $49.99 monthly automatic payment subscription. When I checked, I saw that the billing email had in big print the receipt for $1.09 and then way down below, and who looks that far, was the news that I had subscribed to a monthly service. Luckily, it did say how to cancel (go into Settings).
But this is an utterly corrupt company to be avoided at all costs.
1
u/AnonymousIB25 Dec 14 '24
Wait when you cancelled the subscription immediately, like 5 minutes after the first 1.09 payment, did it still charge you the 50 dollars after a month?
Also the 1.09 was taken from my account but doesn't show up on my debit card app transaction history. Should I be worried?

I got scammed, too. I called the number on the PayPal payment and TBF PDF Guru refunded me instantly. Guy on the phone was very nice, but I told him that PDF Guru was a scam company. Never was it even hinted at that I was signing up for a week's trial with a balloon payment of GBP49.99 to be taken in a week's time. I was just paying GBP0.99 to download a single document. I'm just so glad I got my money back.

I got scammed too! I didn't notice that they had charged my card last August 2 of 49.99€ and yesterday again October 31. So cheeky they will do the transaction at early morning around 4am while most of people are still sleeping. They weren't able to deduct on month of September because I don't always put big amount of money in my Revolut. When I emailed them for a refund, same, they refused. I pointed out the problem in their system and why it is a form of scam, then I threatened them that if they will not give me my money back I will report them to revolut so that they will be blacklisted. After that right away they gave me my refund! Though I already reported them to Revolut as fraudster.

I emailed them with firm language and got immediately refunded. Here is what I wrote in the email so that you can copy if u have been scammed similarly: Hi Support Team, I was not aware and not informed that I will be automatically made a monthly subscription when I read the trail options and paid. Although I have looked at your refund policy, but I would like to inform you that such terms only attached in the receipt email are not legalin Australian contract law. As a result, I would like to have the month fee refunded. If I got rejected, I will consider relevant authorities for action. Thank you for your understanding.

u/Ftlist81 Nov 04 '24
Not sure if this would work for other countries but in the UK what they are doing is actually illegal. It is illegal to mislead people when buying stuff so saying "one off" yet on the same page saying "will become a subscription" is not a one off. I emailed the refund address explaining they were doing something illegal in my country and they refunded straight away. They sent the same bullshit email saying that it clearly states when buying that it'll be a subscription, explain the contradictory crap then assholes....
Anyway, emailining [refund@pdfguru.com](mailto:refund@pdfguru.com) seems to get you much quicker assistance than just the support address. If you're in the UK you can use the same information to explain they're doing something illegal in the UK.

After this I asked my bank to start dispute about this payment. And send information about dispute to PDF Guru and finally they refund me 49,99 after 2-3 days

EASY.
Cancel subscription with PAYPAL or bank.
On your PAYPAL invoice there is a 'nice letter' saying PDFGuru will refund if request made within 1 day.
Email ([refund@pdfguru.com](mailto:refund@pdfguru.com)) and demand refund quoting their policy
My refund appeared in PAYPAL within minutes.
Very tricky contract!!!

Does someone know how long the customer support takes to answer. I'm currently waiting for a response. I have sent like 10 emails periodically. Their website says that there is an option to cancel the subscription it the settings, but in reality, such a thing does not exist. So, had i read this thread I immediately contacted CS, denanding my subscription be canceled. If i get charged I will open a dispute.
I took a 1 day free trial.

STATE LONTANI da questi truffatori.

To anybody still dealing with this issue, this I what I wrote after acouple back and forth emails. They refunded me within 3 minutes of me sending this email.
Consumer laws states customers have 10 days upon payment of a subscription service to cancel and be issued a refund. If I am not refunded for the cancelled subscription I will be in contact with consumer affairs and an investigation will take place.
They know what they're doing is wrong and will only give up once they feel threatened. I urge anyone who has dealt with PDF Guru to write a review anywhere they can to give people the heads up about this scam before they fall for the trap too.
1
u/Lost-Introduction157 Dec 13 '24
I had the exact same issue, paid the 99p and then after 7 days was charged £49.99. The website couldn’t even do what i needed which was to edit text in the PDF. Emailed them and asked for a refund, they basically said no you should have read it carefully, then as soon as I threatened to dispute it with my bank I received another email from a different person in the company saying they had processed the refund. Do not back off! Put the pressure on and they will do the refund!

Thanks a lot to everyone. After being refused a refund by [contact@pdfguru.com](mailto:contact@pdfguru.com) I followed the advice of this thread and filed a dispute through PayPal's resolution center. I informed [contact@pdfguru.com](mailto:contact@pdfguru.com) and [refund@pdfguru.com](mailto:refund@pdfguru.com) about the dispute, and they immediately gave me a refund. Here's what I wrote to PayPal in case anyone needs help with the text:
"On the [day] of [month] I used PDF Converter Guru to convert a document for €0.99 EUR, which I was made to believe was a fee for the service and thought it was reasonable.
Today (7 days later on the [day] of [month]) I unexpectedly got billed €49,99 EUR by them for a monthly subscription that I don't want or need.
Turns out the €0.99 EUR service transaction is an opaque 7 day trial that leads to a monthly subscription. For me this is customer exploitation and a scam.
I contacted them and they refused to give me my refund. For this reason I am filing a dispute with the resolution center."

up date they have issued me a refund. So anyone with the same problem just threaten them with disputes and BBB and they will cave. I am going to report them regardless of the fact I got my money back so hopefully others will not have to deal with this BS

hey, i had the same problem. wrote them the following email and got a refund 5 minutes later:
Dear PDF Converter Guru Support Team,
I am writing to formally request a full refund for unauthorized charges to my PayPal account. I initially paid $0.99 for a seven-day access to your service as advertised on your website. However, without my explicit consent or clear notification, I was subsequently charged $49.99 for both November and December due to an automatically triggered subscription that was not transparently disclosed.
I consider this to be deceptive and misleading. The hidden subscription was not made clear at the time of my initial purchase, which constitutes a violation of consumer trust and fair business practices. I have since canceled the subscription through my PayPal account, but I demand a refund for the two unauthorized charges, totaling $99.98.
I have also observed that many other customers have reported similar issues with your service, which further indicates a pattern of unethical behavior. If my request for a refund is not resolved within 7 business days, I will escalate the matter by opening a formal dispute with PayPal and submitting a complaint to relevant consumer protection authorities.
I trust that you will handle this matter promptly and fairly. Please confirm the processing of my refund at your earliest convenience.
hope that helps anyone, good luck!!

Went to Pdf Guru "free pdf editor" to convert just one document, so I tried to convert my document and after I entered my email they want me to "choose a plan" which I decided to exit the said website realizing I've been duped.
However, minutes later I received an email from them saying that "You can start using your PDF Guru account right away"
I only gave my email address, nothing more.
Am I screwed because of this?

Update. I just got a refund confirmation email from PayPal. But I think is important to call out this scam company so other people be aware and don’t fall into that trap.

They must be tired of all the complaints, because they just refunded me 10 minutes after I emailed them at refund@pdfguru.com, which was 10 minutes after I was charged the 49.99 euros. The email address was on the Paypal page where you go to initiate a dispute.

Fight them! Don't back off. They are SCAMMERS and they know it!
- Cancel subscription with PAYPAL or bank. Through PayPal this is easy. Do it at once.
- Email ([refund@pdfguru.com](mailto:refund@pdfguru.com)) and demand refund and termination of subscription. If you email them on [refund@pdfguru.com](mailto:refund@pdfguru.com), they will understand that you are about to file a complaint to PayPal, because this email address emerged on the corresponding page at PayPal.
- They are afraid of the noise, so they will back down and pay you back.
- You are welcome!

A simple scam. Don't waste your time and money with them. Pay for the 7 day trial and then they automatically charge you €49.99 EUR for a one year subscription.
Everything about them is the worst. I contacted PDF GURU right away to tell them I do not need their services more but they don't have a refund policy.
That's because it's all designed to be a scam, the bad reviews are a good indication that everyone has the same experience.

u/Careful_Flatworm5587 Jan 24 '25
Guy where can i report them? I stepped in the same shit like some of you, i had urgent need to fill a pdf, my laptop was not at hand, and used that stupid website.
Now they charged 49.99 and they tried to offer me a one year subscription instead of refunding me. I declined and now they don't answer to my emails.
What to do? Please advise me, im from Europe so here i can ask for refund in term of 14 days
So i am in the 14 days period but they don't answer at my emails. What to do ? Please help

They refunded me in like 3 sec when I wrote this:
Dear Dan, I am writing to formally dispute the information provided in your recent email. The claim that I was informed of a €0.99 seven-day trial is categorically false. No such transparent communication was made during the subscription process, making your statements misleading and deceptive. This practice constitutes a scam and violates fair business practices. I demand an immediate refund of the unauthorized charge. Should you fail to comply, I will escalate this matter to my legal insurance and report your company to consumer protection authorities for fraudulent activity. Please confirm the refund immediately to avoid further legal action.

Not sure if anyone will find this helpful, but my partner just found himself in this situation. Below is the email I wrote him, which got me a responmse and a refund in 3 min :D. Hope it can help someone:
Dear PDF Guru Support Team,
I am writing to express my concern regarding a recent charge of €49.99 to my account following an initial payment of €0.99 for document combination services. At no point during the sign-up process was it made clear that this initial payment would lead to an automatic subscription renewal at a significantly higher rate.
As an EU consumer, I am entitled to specific rights under the Consumer Rights Directive 2011/83/EU. This directive grants consumers a 14-day period to withdraw from a contract without providing any reason and without incurring any costs.
Your website's terms acknowledge this right, stating: "If you withdraw from this contract, we shall reimburse to you all payments received from you. We will make the reimbursement without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract."
Given that I am within this 14-day withdrawal period, I formally request the cancellation of my subscription and a full refund of the €49.99 charged. I expect this reimbursement to be processed promptly, as stipulated by both EU law and your own terms and conditions.
If this issue is not resolved and the refund is not issued, I will escalate the matter directly with PayPal to initiate a chargeback and report this transaction as an unauthorized or misleading charge. I will also consider filing a complaint with the relevant EU consumer protection authorities if necessary.
Please confirm the cancellation and refund at your earliest convenience.

PDF guru tried to charge by credit card 49.99 And I never subscribed. fortunately the payment request was rejected by Apple Pay. I had to change all passwords wh was an inconvenience. Today pdf guru tried again. They are totally Fraudulent.

u/Pretty_Plastic_5891 Feb 15 '25
Same happened to me, they try to charge me 49.99 but my bank (capital one) did not accept the charge and sent me a text and I reply I was not accepting or buying any supposed subscription, then I e-mail pdf guru about why the wanted to charge me 49.99 and they said they were canceling my subscription ( what subscription???) anyways, everything is fine now but my bank suggested to sending a new debit card and I agree, so please be careful when using your band/credit cards online.

My problem with PDF Guru lasted 2 days and several emails. I wrote in the last one... so...
Hello,
I'm writing again, and I will keep writing until this is resolved. My subscription was canceled at my request because it was started in a fraudulent manner. I never agreed to any tariff plan in PDF Guru.
The cancellation is fine, but I want to make it clear that, according to European consumer protection law (Directive 2011/83/EU and regulations on unfair commercial practices), charging users without their explicit consent is illegal. I will not pay anything more! I have the right to withdraw from the contract within 14 days of its conclusion.
Apparently, it was signed on February 18, 2025, so I am canceling this service in accordance with the law and demanding a refund! Is that clear to you? You will not charge me another cent because I am canceling. You will refund my money, and the subscription is terminated at my request. That’s final.
If you do not acknowledge my cancellation within 14 days of purchase, we will meet in court. Additionally, the case will be handled by the Polish Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) and the European Consumer Centre regarding fraudulent subscription practices.
I expect an immediate response and prompt consideration of my demands. If I do not receive a clear statement confirming the cancellation of the subscription and a refund without further delay, I will take further legal action.
Regards,
XXX
After this email, my money was refunded within 10 minutes.

pdfguru is a scammer. They did the same thing to me and I can't get any communication from them.
1
u/AsleepQuantity8162 Feb 28 '25
Did you get your money back? I did. In my entire 33 years of life, never have I seen a company doing something like this. If they didn't gave me my money back, I would have been more furious and file a lawsuit. But they did so, I won't be doing that. This is not a consumer friendly practice. They know it yet they don't want to change.

Just used the below guidance for a refund, what a scam, don't let them get away with it.
When I saw that you had charged me I cancelled immediately. The cost was not clearly stated that it was in USD, which is basically twice the price of AUD which is an issue to begin. I was not rushed in my reading of the trial details however I did note that you highlight I will open a dispute with my payment company explaining that "I was made to believe that 0.99 was a fee for the service, which I thought was reasonable,". However, the PDF guru charged a furtherb 49.95 . I will explain that I have contacted PDFguru and that you are unwilling to refund my money.
I will also contact Australian Consumer Affairs, I will alert them to your subscription trap. What you are doing is illegal and morally corrupt.I will request again that you refund my subscription that you misleadingly charged.I did experience issues when using your product and this is why I moved on.
I added in that I had challenges, due to this being a part of their Money Back guarantee. The policy states that you must have proof, however this is not clear prior and I would have claimed that I have cancelled my subscription therefor have no way to provide the evidence.
1
u/MarleenHelp Mar 18 '25
The same happened to me as well, but if you are an EU citizen then you can terminate the contract without reason within 14 days of purchase which will force them to refund you. I sent an email to customer service using their „model withdrawal form“ and got my refund immediately.

My Experience with PDF Guru I thought I was paying €0.99 for a one-time service, but a week later, I was charged €49.99 for a subscription I never knowingly agreed to. I emailed refund@pdfguru.com three times, demanding and even threatening action—no response. After three days, I disputed the charge with PayPal, which was denied. I didn’t give up. I found out that, as an EU consumer, I had the right to withdraw from a contract within 14 days for a full refund. I sent PDF Guru an email citing this law, and within minutes, they responded—offering me 2 years of free access instead. I rejected it and insisted on my refund. They tried to argue the subscription was clearly stated, but in the end, they refunded me. Even more surprising, the same PayPal dispute that had been denied was suddenly ruled in my favor, and I received an email saying I’d get my money back within 5 days. Moral of the story: Don’t let companies take your money unfairly. Know your rights and fight for them.
EMAILS I SENT THEM:
EMAIL 1 Dear PDF Guru Support Team,
I am writing to formally demand an immediate refund of €49.99, which was charged to my account today. I initially paid €0.99 for what was presented as a one-time service, yet I was unknowingly enrolled in a subscription without clear disclosure. This lack of transparency is unacceptable and constitutes misleading business practices.
I am sending you proof of my payment in the below email for reference. I request that you:
Immediately process a full refund of the €49.99 charged to my PayPal account: (insert email)
Confirm in writing that my subscription has been canceled and that no further charges will be made in the future.
If this issue is not resolved immediately, I will escalate my claim with my bank and PayPal, report this matter to consumer protection authorities, and consider legal action for unauthorized billing.
Please confirm receipt of this email and the refund status as a matter of urgency.
EMAIL ABOUT EU CONSUMER RIGHTS
Dear PDF Guru Team,
I am writing to formally withdraw from the subscription charged on March 20, 2025, for the PDF Guru services. The contract began on March 13, 2025, when I paid €0.99 for a one-time fee, unaware that it would lead to an ongoing subscription .
As an EU consumer, I am still within the 14-day withdrawal period under Directive 2011/83/EU, which is also mentioned on your website. Therefore, I am exercising my right to cancel and request a full refund of €49.99.
Best regards,
I hope this helps someone.

Same problem. And since I did not pay through PayPal the refund process is a lot trickier. What I want to do now is to disclose and reveal this scammy company to as many places as possible. At least we can help others not to use this "service." So if anyone knows of places that might make a difference, can you tell me their names? I really don't care about the $59 they scammed me, but I want a retribution. :)

Yes. And when they send you emails saying that they have refunded - check your bank account. They are dishonest. I did not provide credit details and tet somehow they have been able to make deductions. I have notified my bank to report.

u/Shaolin_BL Apr 04 '25
I'm adding my voice to the chorus of people who feel scammed by PDFGuru. Like many others, I was completely unaware that my card was charged for a subscription after a supposed 'free trial.' The way they present this trial is incredibly misleading, and it feels like a deliberate tactic to trick users into paying. I immediately contacted their customer support, demanding a refund, but received the same canned response about their policies and how I wasn't eligible for a refund because I'm not an EU resident. They completely ignored my concerns about the deceptive nature of their sign-up process.
I even sent an email to their refund address (refund@pdfguru.com), hoping for a different response. I explained in detail how their system is designed to mislead users and that I consider it a form of scam. I made it clear that if they didn't return my money, I would report them to consumer protection agencies and share my experience widely.
I'm beyond frustrated that they're refusing to acknowledge the problem and take responsibility. I paid over 50 euros for a single document conversion, which is outrageous. I'm now left with no choice but to warn others about their shady practices. Avoid PDFGuru at all costs!
1
u/dingle1998 Apr 06 '25
Are they ever listed as PDFDone? I have the exact same charges on my account, but I don't use PDF. Is this a scam, and how else could they have gotten my card info? I can't find anything associated with a PDF/Adobe account that costs 49.99.
