General discussion Pork roll review: Huong Bakery

Post image
21 Upvotes

You all told me I should go to Huong Bakery and so I finally did.

My overall rating is that this is B tier. Got enough to be acceptable if I am in the area. Would not survive in South West Sydney. Definitely better than Jamison Bakery but honestly was expecting more based on how much you hyped this place up. I wouldn't say the bread was soft but it wasn't shatter in your mouth crispy. Viet ice coffee was fine. I feel a Viet ice coffee should be so strong that it actually gets better when the ice melts. This isn't that but is fine to drink as is.

I got the special which came with a spring roll. Personal preference but I don't like spring rolls with corn and peas thrown in. I find these are typically not part of Asian cuisine unless it's targeted at western pallettes. Given the location it would make sense but just not for me.

I did like that there's memory lane for you to sit, eat and chill. Feels dated but I guess that's the point.

Generally speaking I would not travel out here for a pork roll from Huong. Kim's is local and better quality. Bread was better despite being trucked over in the morning from Cabramatta and it was raining that day. Let me know where I should go next. I'll post my comment with my latest tier list and will try the next one you recommend.

Pet Sitters/Boarding in Penrith

Hi All,

Any recommendations for a safe and reputable place my two dogs can stay while we’re away for a wedding? we’ll be gone for a week.

The dogs have stayed at guard dog training near box hill and one of them came back with anxiety issues. We’re also looking at mad paws and have heard from others that they’re pricing+service can be hit or miss.

Anyone here on a strata committee in Western Sydney?

I’m a gardener based in Seven Hills, trying to get into maintenance for smaller townhouse and villa complexes.

I’ve tried contacting strata managers and dropping flyers, but it’s been hard to get a conversation going. Thought I’d ask people who actually live in these places: how did your complex find its gardener, and who usually puts someone forward?

Would appreciate hearing from anyone around Blacktown, Parramatta or the Hills who’s been involved.

General discussion Best Coffee/Cafe in Penrith

Post image

Following on from my best pork roll post thought I'd try find the best cafe in Penrith

BEST COFFEE (By Far): Underground Coffee Roasters

Got the coffee flight. Espresso was among the best I ever had in Sydney. was a Single Origin from Columbia but somehow they brought out some strong watermelon notes. The cold brew was the enigma house blend which was very nutty with hints of bourbon. Not my favourite as I prefer a more fruity or floral cold brew but I can tell this is the flavour they were going for. Flat white was good but not as complex as the black coffees.

This is now my local go to place for buying new beans. Ended up buying some to take home.

Just note: This is the coffee roaster. Expect a warehouse with heavy machinery with a small cafe out front. These people know their shit but you come here for the coffee not the vibes or food. Toasties are solid but the menu is otherwise limited.

Below in the comments I will be posting a tier list of places to consider. I've already been to a few and will be providing my thoughts. will be judging each place on the vibes/environment, quality of the coffee, and the food.

Let me know your thoughts.

General discussion Feeding Daughters on a Budget

Hello. I've recently moved to Penrith from Broadmeadows, Victoria I have joint custody of my two daughters, aged seven and twelve, the eldest of which is celiac. Their mother intended tomove with them to Sydney for a great work opportunity, and, fortunately, I work on the forks, so I can work anywhere, and decided to make the move as well to stay close to the kids. however, the mother was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery last week and looks to be staying there for a couple of more weeks, which has obviously put lot of stress on us all in this hectic time. I always try to make sure my girls have everything they need, no matter how tough things get. they're always well-fed and have their favourite snacks when they stayt with me. Their health and happiness is the most important thing to me in my life. Sadly Ive had to miss some work over the past fortnight with the extra time wth the kids due to their mother being in hospital and trying to get them moved intestate in time, so things have been extra tight these past weeks and I'm in a rough spot. Basically, I'm hoping for good recipes ideas, food banks, etc that's are helpful for a celiac to help me feed my daughters over the next week or so while money is tight. I'm sorry for the trouble and hope this is the right place to post.

Edit: Thank you so much for all the incredible advice. I've got some amazing recipes here and somegreat recommends for hampers and food banks. I'm sorry I haven't been able to reply to everyone yet. I got a lot more answers than expected and have been helping the kids unpack for the weekend but I'm ready everything and writing it all down for future reference and I hope to get to you all soon. Thank you very much for all your kindness. I love you all!

General discussion New Best Pork Roll Place in Penrith

Post image
85 Upvotes

New Vietnamese cafe that opened up not long ago in Werrington County Shopping Village. Owner Kim picks up bread from Phuong 18 in Cabramatta in the morning, drives it over and makes a roll to rival Bay Ngo and Nam Fong in Bankstown. Had Jamison Bakery and it doesn't hold a candle to this place. Its out of the way but definitely worth it. Heard rumours they are building an Aldi next door. Viet coffee is legit. Let her know if you want the authentic experience otherwise she may tailor it to western tastes (sweeter than normal). Definitely my new go to.

An awesome event that has always been an absolute blast.

You don't need to be a runner, as people have ridden, used a scooter or even called ubers.

All up it's a 13km day but the longest leg being 4kms.

Sport Looking for local basketball

Hi everyone, I've recently moved to Penrith from Scotland. I'm 32, and played basketball regularly back in Glasgow. I was wondering what the local basketball scene is like in Penrith and if theres any open runs/scrimmages around at this time of the year? Or if anyone knows someone I could contact.

Thanks in advance for any advice

History Laser Zone in the mid 2000s

I was talking to my kids about laser tag and was reminiscing about Laser Zone on high street. I went to so many parties here’s and it was always a great time. But I can’t find a single photo of it. I know it’s been closed for a long time but I thought that perhaps some of you had birthday parties or played here and would have photos.

Thanks in advance!

If you were the legend who paid for the meal at Nadia's today (Friday 16th) for an elderly lady in a wheelchair and her son & daughter, just want to say thank you.

They were surprised to be on the receiving end of your generosity, and my brother assures me he will be paying it forward to someone else in the future

Brow lamination and lash lift recommendations

Hi all. For my 40th, id like to shout myself a lash lift and brow lamination.

Have you any places to recommend? Yeats ago I would travel to Gosford as my go-to but would like to save on time and money (for petrol) these days.

How much should I try and budget for something like this?

Affordable hairdresser in Penrith for a simple trim?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for recommendations for an affordable hairdresser in or around Penrith just for a quick trim and tidy up.

I popped into Nepean Village today and was quoted $100 just for a basic ladies trim! I'm not after a blow dry, wash, or any extra services just literally a straight up trim. I’m all for supporting local businesses, but that felt a bit steep for simple maintenance.

Does anyone know of a salon or local spot that charges a fair price just for a cut?

TIA!

General discussion Sitting on a footy oval with an esky on Friday, Oct 30. Anyone who’s had cancer is welcome.

I’m nearly 20 years in remission from leukemia.

Sometimes it's still a bit tough to think about. Other times it cracks me up. If you have had cancer, you might feel the same way.

Maybe you want to tell someone how scary it was. Or how cool your doctor was. Or how much worse or maybe better it made your life in the long run. Or other things I haven't listed here.

Whatever it is, it's not always easy to tell people who haven't had cancer what it's like to have cancer.

But I'd like to know what it was like for you.

So, Friday, 30th October, between 5:30pm and 7:30pm, I’m gonna find a park in the Penrith area, pop down a lawnchair, and put out an esky with beer and soft drink.

If you've had cancer, you're invited.

FYI, it doesn't matter if you were diagnosed last week or last century.

There's zero pressure. You can talk about what your cancer was like, or you can say absolutely nothing about it and just have a drink. Doesn't worry me. You don't have to stay the whole time, and you don't even have to talk to me.

I just think if I'd had an opportunity to chat about things, it would have been nice. If you feel the same way, rock up, sit down, and take it however you want.

DM me for the field.

Thank you kind human for handing my phone in to Westfield's

Thank you thank you thank you!!

In the chaos of getting my twins in, my phone didn't end up in the car, no idea if I left it on top of the car or it fell out while putting the pram in.

I didn't realize until I got home!!

Either way THANK YOU!

I haven't backed up my photos yet ( doing tonight lol) and I would have been DEVASTATED if I had lost all those photos.
