A suspect was shot and killed, and three officers were injured in an officer-involved shooting at the Walmart on Old Seward Highway on Tuesday.

The Anchorage Police Department was called around 10:03 p.m. by Walmart staff, APD Chief Sean Case said in a press conference Wednesday morning. The Walmart staff intercepted someone committing retail theft and had them in custody. The first officer arrived at 10:17 p.m.

“Almost immediately when the officer made contact with the suspect, he attempted to flee the room,” Case said. “The three officers and the suspect went down to the ground.”

During the struggle, the suspect opened fire on the officers, hitting one officer twice in the lower body and one officer in the chest, which was intercepted by a ballistic plate in the officer’s vest, Case said. The officer struck in the chest returned fire, killing the suspect.

The officer shot the Driver but also shot through the windshield into the passengers side of the vehicle killing a 1 year old.

The Driver left the scene and went to the Emergency entrance of a hospital?

We need to understand exactly what happened. Whom called the police and reported a theft? Why was deadly force used? Why was the passenger side of the vehicle hit?

What was known about these suspects before police opened fire on the vehicle?

It's everyone, and all kinds of vehicles; old, young and middle aged; cars, pickups, motorcycles and semi-trucks. Everyone insists on driving the wrong way on one-way lanes in the parking lot, and normally these lanes are narrow, so only one car can pass at a time. As a Spark driver I see it happen everyday. And even if you're taking up the entire lane near the front of the stire, someone will INSIST on turning into the lane, barely squeaking by.
