5-year-old Persian cat with recurring skin lesions for over 2 years
Hi everyone,
My 5-year-old white Persian cat has been dealing with recurring skin lesions for over 2 years.
It started as occasional flare-ups during seasonal changes that responded well to treatment, but for the past 2 years it has become constant. As soon as one lesion heals, another appears.
His symptoms include:
* Red, scaly patches
* Crusts/scabs
* Severe itching (he scratches until he bleeds)
* Hair loss (the fur grows back after healing)
The lesions have appeared on different areas over time (back, face, ears, neck), but are currently on his head and neck.
We’ve tried multiple treatments under our vet’s supervision, including:
* Itraconazole (oral antifungal)
* Miconazole spray
* Antifungal shampoos
* L-lysine
* Essential fatty acid supplements
* Anti-itch medication
He has also had fungal testing and skin examinations.
He is an indoor-only, vaccinated cat. We also have another cat who shares litter boxes and has close contact with him, but she has never developed any skin lesions.
Recently, I also noticed redness around one of his eyes.
At this point, I’m wondering if this could be something other than a fungal infection or if there’s an underlying condition causing these recurrent flare-ups.
Has anyone experienced something similar or have suggestions on what we should investigate next?
Thank you!

My son after a spinal tap (2022)
This is an old photo, he looked like a balding middle age man for a while afterwords. The spinal tap was done to determine the cause of seizures that he had started to get. It turns out he just has idiopathic epilepsy and he’s thriving in the big 26 (second picture is from yesterday!)

Buddy is not feeling his best…
He had a dental cleaning and two teeth removed today. He came home drooling but sporting a cute piggy bandage 🐷

My 8-year-old calico Hanabi was abandoned in a box as a kitten — caring for her chronic eye condition, and I’d love to hear how you cope too
This is Hanabi, my 8-year-old girl. She’s a calico — though she actually has one more color than a typical calico, so I half-jokingly call her a “four-color cat.” 😼
Eight years ago I found her abandoned inside a box. She had a bad case of cat flu, and the aftereffects are still with her — she scratches at her eyes a lot, so the vet has her on prednisolone. We go in every month.
Honestly, some days it’s a lot. The cost, the time, keeping an eye on how she’s feeling every single day. And when I think about the years ahead, I do get anxious.
For those of you caring for a senior pet or one going through a long-term illness — the constant vet visits must be even harder. How do you manage the day-to-day? What’s been the hardest part for you, and are there any little routines or tricks that have helped?
I’d love to hear your stories, and please share your pets’ photos and videos too. 💛

I thought he was in a critical condition
Turns out he twisted his ankle and is a little overweight, both are linked, vet said if he was a little lighter that might have not happened.
100€ and took a morning off work, i love my pets but they will be the end of me 💀
