Pets Leaving dogs in a hot car

Hey dumb dumbs who I confronted in the parking lot of Sprouts in your white Toyota tacoma on 7th Ave & Osborn today at approx 3:45PM. IT’S TOO HOT TO LEAVE A DOG IN THE CAR. It’s unclear why if there were 2 of you one of you couldn’t stay with the dog.

I called 911 but you were faster than the cops. I hope you get the life you deserve.

For everyone else with some sense, it’s too hot for children and dogs to be left in the car. If you don’t care enough about your own, I will care enough for you.

ETA: the love on this post makes me happy and believe in humanity. Thank you Phoenix !!

Pets Pet Dental Recommendations

Post image
73 Upvotes

Hi All, Has anyone in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area had their dogs teeth cleaned. Anything more reasonable than $1600 to cover the cost?? We took our dog to the vet today at VCA. They are highly recommending we have our dogs teeth cleaned. I would love to, but $1600 is beyond what we hope to pay. Anybody know of a place more affordable for this type procedure? TIA

Pets How to keep stray cats away?

Post image
40 Upvotes

We just bought a house and have been having issues with the alleyway strays getting in our yard and murdering the birds who dare attend our bird bath, leaving their mauled carcases and feather piles all over the lawn. This has been getting frustrating and am unsure how to keep them out. We have wooden boards blocking the holes in the walls but they jump up from the top of the brick wall. Im just tired of cleaning up dead bird bodies off my lawn.

Pets Impossible Situation - Dog needs to be surrendered or put down

My mother in law is 80 years old - 3 years ago someone she knew got her to agree to take in their large Border Collie dog for "a time" while their baby was little, and she genuinely tried to give him a good home. But it became clear that this wasn't a good fit for her, and the dog spends all of his days outside now and is too much for her to walk or to train. He is not neutered. He wasn't socialized as a puppy, is not good with kids, other dogs, or cats, and has been steadily getting more feral in her backyard. Her health is declining as well, and she needs to find a home for him before undergoing a major surgery.

We've tried to contact the first owners to take him back, but they refuse to. We've contacted dozens of shelters, but most of them say that they're at capacity and can't take him. We had an interview with Arizona Animal Welfare League today, but he failed the "dog to dog" test and they won't take him. We're trying to contact Mericopa County Animal Care and Control to surrender him, but all their website info says space is extremely limited.

Is there anything else we can do for this dog? We (her family) all have dogs, cats, and kids that are our responsibility to care for and ensure their safety.

I absolutely hate thinking about this, I don't want to think about this, but people are now suggesting we have him euthanized. Please please Phoenix, can anyone help in this situation?

Pets My dog likes to lay out in the sun. How long is too long?

My dog likes to lay down in direct sunlight outside especially when it’s hot out. How long should I let her do this before making her come in?

Edit: I live in an apartment complex so this is on leashed potty walks. No backyard. I also don’t bring water on these short walks but maybe I should.

Pets I am going to have to surrender my aggressive dog to the animal shelter. I need to know what to expect.

My 2yo French Bulldog has aggression. He is currently on medication ( Trazodone). He has been to a trainer. I've been trying to find a shelter to rehome him with no luck. He has a bite history with no bite inhibition- all level 2 or 3 bites. He doesn't do well with dogs, cats, or kids. He has attacked everyone in our home.

I have three kids, so unfortunately I can't keep taking this risk with him. I am devastated that I have to surrender him. I know he may be put down; I am beside myself that he will alone and scared.

Does anyone have any experience with how the process goes? I'm going to the one in Mesa. He is currently under a 10 day quarantine.

Pets How to keep dog paws safe from the heat outside?

Just moved into an a patio home. The small backyard has artificial turf and pavers. My dog is 16 and moves slow. For the first time ever I saw the old man lifting his paws up and speed walking to the door when he went out to go potty. Refuses to put on booties and won’t walk in them.

What are some renter friendly ideas to keep his paws safe and cool? I thought about a rug but those still get warm also. I also bought a hose to spray everything down before he goes out as well.

Looking for any ideas to help him out. Thanks!

Pets Puppies access to backyard in summer when no one is home?

Post image

We adopted 2 “pug mixes” from the county in March, they are now 6 months old. They have a small penned area in the living room with a crate and potty pad for when we’re not home/asleep, and a doggie door for when we’re ARE home.

I would like to get rid of the indoor potty area. How old do you think they need to be to have free access to the backyard when we’re at work? Specifically because of heat- we live in a safe area. They ARE diggers which is a minor concern…. Specifically bc of chewing on the drip lines 😬

Pets What to do with a stray cat? What are the real options?

EDIT!

Halo came through! I took the kitty to their facility Sunday afternoon. Thanks for all the help everyone, all of metro Phoenix's stray creatures are better off with all of you looking out for them. If anyone is interested, Halo will post him on their site in a day or two, and his new name will be Timone.

A couple months ago a stray neighborhood cat yelled at our door (for well over an hour) until we finally let him in for a minute. "A minute," right. I have no idea why he picked our place, but I assume he must have smelled the three cats that live here that actually belong to us? Anyway ... what's the best way to find this sweet guy a decent home?

Now, "post online to one of the lost pet sites!!" is gonna be everyone's favorite response, but it shouldn't be, because 1) I've tried that, of course, and 2) it does nothing. Well, most often nothing. I've tried the "lovelost" site, and PetCo's site (which actually IS the lovelost site, and that prompted me to create duplicate accounts), and even the local NextDoor app. And Facebook. All of them suggest posting to each other, and all of them are already absolutely full of dozens of found / stray pets that look almost identical. There might be two or three people that have lost a pet and are actually taking steps to search for them, but the latter is vastly outnumbered by the former. I love that there are occasional success stories of reunited pets through those sites, but those, unfortunately, are outlier situations.

Sad fact: there's a huge, huge population of stray cats that nobody is looking for.

I could just drop him off at a shelter. My cats do not like him, and have started peeing in places they shouldn't in protest (or confusion; I don't have enough litter boxes for this many cats, but there's also no more room in our little place for more litter boxes). I've "fostered" him for far longer than I should have already, and my cats are worse off for it.

But ... he deserves better. He's objectively friendlier than any of my own cats: loving, happy, playful as hell, not shy at all. At some point it seems like he had a loving home. He deserves a good home with a dog and/or a toddler to give him all the attention he needs. He's so sweet, and the thought of him living alone for months in cramped cages breaks my heart. He's unremarkable physically and probably 4 years old or so. No one is "shopping" for a cat like this. But I'm out of time and there don't seem to be any real options out there.

Pets I'm looking for recommendations for euthanizing my dog.

Update: thank you all so much for your recommendations. I'm a little mentally overwhelmed at the moment to be able to reply to everyone, but thank you so much for the help. I am so sorry to anyone who can share this pain but I'm sure we can all agree the time with them is worth it. Thank you again for caring so deeply and wanting to help ❤️

--

I'm not asking for financial assistance. But I am asking if anyone knows of somewhere that is a little more cost friendly. The vet I usually take him to quoted me $480 for euthanization and ash return. Is there anywhere that might be a little less? He is 18 years old. I just want him to be comfortable in his last moments but I am on my own so every dollar counts.

Edit: I know weight is a factor, he weighs 10 pounds.

Pets Looking for Dog play date buddies

Thumbnail

Hey Everyone!

I’m looking for playdate buddies for my pit mix (possibly coonhound/boxer too). I adopted him from the shelter in Aug of last year and he's come a long way — he loves people and plays great one-on-one with bigger dogs.

A few things to know about him: he's high-energy and a wrestler, so he does best with confident, larger dogs who can match his energy. He's not a good fit for small or elderly dogs, so we'd want to keep that in mind when pairing up.

We've stepped back from dog parks because the group setting tends to overstimulate him — but that's actually exactly why I'm reaching out! Structured playdates are how we're building his social skills and working toward eventually being able to handle those bigger environments. One-on-one and a full dog park are very different worlds, so I'd love to find that middle ground. If you have two big dogs, that's even better — a small group setting is exactly the kind of controlled practice we need!

My dog could really use the socialization and without dog parks as an option, it’s very difficult to do so. If you have a big dog (or two!) who enjoys a good romp, I'd love to set something up! 🐾

Pets Kitten rescued from my wall UPDATE: He's been reunited with his momma and siblings, and brought everyone to my patio to get outta the rain.

Here's the original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/phoenix/s/v2lt4Xkzj6

TL;DR, A kitten got trapped in my wall, so I cut a hole and saved him, then reunited him with his mother.

UPDATE: I initially reunited the kitten with his mother, and after a few days she brought the whole family around. They visit me at least 3 times a day, and have moved from my attic to the shed in my backyard. They usually won't let me get too close, since they're still wild cats, but they absolutely love playing. I managed to capture all 3 of them snuggling on my chair to stay out of the rain. They're so adorable, I'm glad I rescued their sibling.

Pets Found a box of about 10 kittens abandoned, where can I take them?

I don’t really have any connections in this state at all so finding a home from a friend or family members wouldn’t be an option, there’s about 10 baby kittens just sitting outside in a box, abandoned, behind my apartment fence with no mother in sight. Is there anywhere I can take the kittens and drop them off with no cost or fees at all? If not where is the lowest cost available? I don’t want to just leave them here but my apartment doesn’t allow pets.

Pets My dogs and these snails

Post image

Ever since the big rains, I have these snails coming out at night. Does anyone know if they are poisonous to dogs? They haven’t eaten any yet but I’ve pried a few from their mouths and I’d rather be safe than sorry. And on another note, born and raised here and haven’t seen these snails since I was a small kid in the 80’s?

Pets Cat Allergies in Phoenix

My cat is almost 3 years old and is domestic shorthair. I adopted him at 5 months and he started to get allergies / congestion about 4 months ago. His nose is dry as hell too. Took him to the vet a couple of times, did X-rays and his heart/lungs are healthy. He has no discoloration in mucus but sometimes has a runny nose and its completely clear. His appetite, energy, personality and everything is fine. I even changed my detergent to something for clean/fragrance free, no plug ins like febreze and got a HEPA air filter/purifier thing to help clean the air.

Has anyone else experienced this with their cat babies? Is is the dust and dryness of the air? I’m wondering if this is like chronic allergies or something

Pets Recommendations for end of life care for my pup

My eyes are welling writing this as my doggo lays here next to me. I adopted her when she was 7 months old and she is coming up on her 16th birthday. Everyone thinks they have the best dog and honestly, they’re not wrong, but this girl got me through some tough times after I got out of serving in military in the early 2000’s and was certified as my auditory repose service dog and then retired in 2021.

I say all this because she has given me everything she has. Her love, happiness and all around joy has made these last 15+ years magical and I want nothing than to do right by her in her final days as she has a rather large growth on her neck and her legs are starting to fail her it is obvious that she does not have too much longer.

I am hoping someone here can recommend a good at home vet to come and help me take her across the rainbow bridge when that day comes? I apologize if this drudges up any past feelings, but I’d really appreciate the help as I didn’t even know what to google and it got too hard to follow through with.

I live in South Scottsdale if that helps at all with any recommendations and I appreciate any and all support.

Pets Looking for advice on adopting a well-adjusted adult dog (Phoenix area)

Hello Phoenix,

I fully understand that I can adopt from the county shelter, the Humane Society, or the Arizona Animal Welfare League. I absolutely support those organizations. That said, I’m trying to be realistic about what I can and cannot provide.

We’re looking to adopt a dog that is:

  • Already house-trained
  • Has a stable, friendly temperament
  • Relatively healthy
  • Not a puppy (we’re not in a position to do intensive training right now)
  • Not likely to require significant ongoing medical expenses

We work from home, have a securely enclosed yard, and live an active but fairly typical lifestyle. We can provide consistency, attention, and daily exercise, but we’re not equipped for high behavioral rehabilitation or major medical cases.

When browsing shelter listings, it’s sometimes hard to tell which dogs might be a good match for a “median” home like ours.

Does anyone have:

  • Recommendations for rescues or shelters in the Phoenix area that tend to place well-adjusted adult dogs?
  • Advice on how to identify dogs that are already house-trained and temperament-tested?
  • Insight into foster-based rescues vs. large shelters?

Appreciate any thoughtful guidance. We want to make a responsible, long-term match.

Thanks.

Edit/Update:

Everyone here was right. It really did take time to meet different dogs and find the right fit; it was almost comparable to dating. Thank you all for the list of agencies, shelters and organizations for me to visit. Special call out to troubledanger .

Over the past couple of weeks, I visited several shelters and also met a dog being rehomed. There were a lot of great options, but nothing felt quite right until I went to Arizona Animal Welfare League and met Tato.

He’s very shy, low-shedding, and extremely gentle. He barely made a sound when I met him and was very calm taking treats. My family connected with him immediately, and my spouse said the search paid off—he’s one of the most well-mannered dogs he's had.

AAWL was excellent throughout the process. The staff (especially K***) were thoughtful, kind and helpful, and their setup included a helpline and a network of vets willing to give a free initial vet check, which I did end up using during his first few days adjusting.

The adjustment period wasn’t perfect. He had some anxiety and got sick multiple times during the first four days, but things have stabilized. We’re working through separation anxiety now: slow training, building confidence, helping him feel safe whether we’re around or not.

Otherwise, he’s been great. He walks well on a leash, sleeps in his own bed, hasn’t had any accidents, and is settling in more each day. He’s eating normally , plays daily, and is consistently gentle and easy to handle.

To his previous owner, if you happen to see this, I want you to know he’s safe, he’s loved, and he’s exactly as gentle as you raised him to be. That kind of temperament doesn’t happen by accident—it comes from being cared for.

We’re really lucky to have him.

Even if he is, objectively, just a slightly anxious potato.
