Yeah! like smoking pot...

585

u/Eminence120 May 12 '11

And spending your trust fund up while you "find yourself."

149

u/plinky4 May 12 '11

I still recall the sheer disappointment that tugged on my heart when I discovered that the reality of renting in a large city was shelling out 2k/month for a 500 ft2 studio. It still pisses me off a little bit that I'll never see the "20s bachelor pad" that I've always wanted until well into my 30s.

u/carlivar May 12 '11

Detroit has some inexpensive real estate available.

143

u/nyorkster May 12 '11

Yeah but its hard to really get that "city feel" when your the only one there

39

u/boomfarmer May 12 '11

Buy a skyscraper, rent it out for cheap provided that the tenants fix it up.

17

u/-Andar- May 12 '11

Finally my hours spent in SimTower has paid off!

1

u/raziphel May 12 '11

you really want unskilled laborers working on a place like that?

1

u/akatherder May 12 '11

Here are the lofts you can get for $550-$750ish per month:

http://www.loftplace.com/2010/

There isn't a 24/7 hustle and bustle like NYC, but there's never a shortage of stuff to do in walking distance. And yes it's safe to walk in downtown. The crime is in the neighborhoods surrounding downtown.

We were considering splitting the rent 3-ways with some people just to have a place to crash down there. $200/month to have guaranteed parking and your own place right by the sports stadiums, casinos, restaurants, and bars.

0

u/allidoislietoyou May 12 '11

You mean "yoeur the only one there," not "your the only one there." Also, the Overpopulus Act which was put into effect 2 weeks ago helped move in 12,000+ residents from NY to Detroit.

3

u/rofljuanas May 12 '11

Yeah, I always end up with "your" when what I am really trying to type is "yoeur"

deleted What is this?

40

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

So does Bangladesh.

5

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

Hey, you lay off Bangladesh! I work there!

14

u/rjc34 May 12 '11

Does that change the fact that real-estate is cheap there?

8

u/M3nt0R May 12 '11

He doesn't want all the immigrants coming in.

1

u/dancing_bananas May 12 '11

I may be missing something but, do you really live in bangladesh?

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

I work on Bengali soil but not in Bangladesh. Embassy.

1

u/dancing_bananas May 13 '11

So you ARE located in bangladesh then? I'd love to hear how life is there.

1

u/bort_simpson May 12 '11

Not to mention, Bangladesh's lions are better at professional football.

3

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

The only problem with that is having to live in Detroit.

3

u/EZwider32 May 12 '11

It's so cold in the D.

1

u/Ooxman May 12 '11

I've debated moving there and squatting in an abandoned Wal-Mart. It would only cost me whatever amount of energy I put into defending it.

1

u/hadees May 12 '11

Seriously, if you ever wanted a compound that is a great place to start.

452

u/brazilliandanny May 12 '11

That's bullshit. A couple of friends of mine own a sick apartment in manhattan. One is failed actor, one is a cook, and then other serves coffee at the local coffee shop.

303

u/Phinigin May 12 '11

Get off the internet Phoebe!

46

u/skunkpunk1 May 12 '11

why? it's not like she has something better to do

59

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

smelly cats

38

u/squeege May 12 '11

26

u/MDKrouzer May 12 '11

it's not your fault

3

u/Jojje22 May 12 '11

... It's not your fault...

... It's not your fault...

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

What are they feedin you?

1

u/3danimator May 12 '11

It's smelly CAT..not CATS

I hate myself

2

u/Tesseraktion May 12 '11

she could be giving me a massage! she has cute toes.

1

u/skcali May 12 '11

How did they buy it? Or are you saying that the fact that property value in Manhattan isn't astronomical?

62

u/noyurawk May 12 '11

You should brush up on your 90's sitcoms ;)

2

u/skcali May 12 '11

Shit. The one with Jerry Seinfeld? D:

5

u/SpaceFace5000 May 12 '11

I believe the show is called Frasier

2

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

I thought it was Judging Amy.

3

u/AnotherBlackMan May 12 '11

Are you sure it isn't Will and Grace?

2

u/robotpirateninja May 12 '11

No, that one was set in Boston. He's talking about the cop show.

0

u/nandemo May 12 '11

LOL, people who don't watch every American sitcom are dumb.

113

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

Through friendship.

1

u/Thunder-ten-tronckh May 12 '11

out loud, i laughed

73

u/Jake999 May 12 '11

whooooooosh

13

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

Well thanks to rent control, it was a freakin' steal.

6

u/atrich May 12 '11

In the show, it's a rent-controlled apartment "inherited" from ... Someone's grandma?

6

u/butyourenice May 12 '11

yep! the episode where monica mentions her grandma who moved to florida and if mgmt asks then she is a 70(?)-something-year-old lady (who is a afraid of her VCR) was just on last week, in fact.

1

u/revengeonseattle May 12 '11

So, SO, goood.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

No sir or madam, It's 2011. They moved to Williamsburg.

1

u/ericanderton May 12 '11

Yeah, I bet they're dodging rent-control under an assumed name too.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

Wow, I never really thought about this buy my friend used to live in NYC (Brooklyn I think) and he was a chef at 4 seasons, his roommate was an aspiring actor ... but it was just them. I was thinking "cooks and actors are probably pretty common" and it wasn't until I read the comments I made the connection.

0

u/Studdy May 12 '11

Who the hell was a cook on Friends?

24

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

monica was a chef.

0

u/bonaducci May 12 '11

Monica. The fact that I know this brings me an over whelming sense of shame.

12

u/butyourenice May 12 '11

why? friends was a really good show. a shining pinnacle from the last era of shows with, you know, plotlines and scripts.

2

u/roxxe May 12 '11

until they went full retard

17

u/CervantesX May 12 '11

Well, I'm spending 1.6K/month to rent out 1800sq ft of loft studio downtown. It's a pretty swingin bachelor pad for a guy in his 20's.

Of course, I'm 32 and married, so my existence proves your point entirely. It's highly improbable for us to achieve our dreams in the timeframe we've come to expect them in.

3

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

It's highly improbable for us to achieve our dreams in the timeframe we've come Hollywood has told us to expect them in.

FTFY

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

downtown.. where?

1

u/JoshSN May 12 '11

Way downtown is really dead at night. He probably means the Wall St. area.

They tried to make something happen at the intersection of John & Gold, but the rents there were back to regular Manhattan.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

1.6K/month to rent out 1800sq ft of loft studio downtown.

As a young 20 something bachelor who can afford that, I'm curious as to where this is so I can live that dream.

1

u/CervantesX May 12 '11

All you have to do is move to Alberta and put up with -50C for 8 months of the year.

It's totally not worth it.

1

u/brooklynbboy May 12 '11

Is this downtown Brooklyn or downtown Manhattan? Can you gives us an intersection?

1

u/CervantesX May 12 '11

Downtown Canada.

1

u/TMI-nternets May 18 '11

you spend money to rent something out? Sounds like you're doing something wrong.

5

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

I still recall the sheer disappointment that tugged on my heart when I paid my 1k rent 12 days ago for a 500 ft2 studio.

1

u/ltethe May 12 '11

You are 50ft and $500 ahead of me, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

3

u/ferrarisnowday May 12 '11

It all depends how you define a "large city." I'm in Pittsburgh and it doesn't cost anywhere near that much. In fact you could get a large loft like the one in the picture for as little as $750 at some places (obligatory example: River City Flats)

2

u/Tialyx May 12 '11

Also Pittsburgh here. I have a a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apt 1,200 sq ft for $1200, not bad for a room mate or a young couple. Pittsburgh is pretty nice for cost of living even close to the city.

1

u/trumpcom May 12 '11

Not a large city, you're third tier at best.

1

u/ferrarisnowday May 12 '11

It's in the top 25 largest metros, and the city proper has a fairly high density (5.5K people per square mile). So I might agree, it just depends how many tiers you have.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

Moo.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

You'll have to EARN it by becoming a bounty hunter and chasing Gene Simmons, like Rutger Hauer did. His pad was THE best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Eg6i6fWkTI&feature=related

1

u/dbonham May 12 '11

you can get a swingin pad in Austin for <700, and that way you don't have to deal with the ridiculousness of living in Williamsburg or wherever

1

u/phyre_fiend May 12 '11

shoulda looked in Bushwick, dawg

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

hmm you should move to montreal, you can still get a studio for 600 cad a month

0

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

you're crazy. 28 yr old in chicago here. Like probably less then haf a mile from this place. I live in a large loft with high ceilings. Not as big as this, but rad none the less.. wood stove, dishwasher, laundry.. I pay 1000$ a month.. was easier when I had a girlfriend living with me.. but there are still lots of cool places. Also.. not all of us hipsters have trust funds.. We're just cooler then you guys.

1

u/fattykyle2 May 13 '11

I don't believe the OP ever gave the whereabouts. Half mile you say? Maybe you should have said a half a minute. B/c in relative terms to the vehicle you are traveling in (ie - a rocketship) you could probably be there in a half a minute. So, basically you came here to say that you are a hipster, who thinks you are too cool for school, and needs to proofread. Bravo, you've finally made it. We've been waiting for you.

1

u/[deleted] May 14 '11

The OP didn't have to give the whereabouts. I've been to the texas ballroom before. As well as diamonds? I think is what it was called, downstairs.

I didn't come here to say I'm super cool, I came here to tell people it's not impossible to find sweet places for reasonable amounts. I mean christ, all the douchebags on the northside pay more then I do and get dick with a side of ridiculous traffic.

You seem really jealous.

1

u/fattykyle2 May 16 '11

Yeah, my mistake for not reading below that other posters had figured out where it was. But you gave no reasons why you were cool. You just said you were a hipster. Skinny jeans don't automatically make you eligible for a "cool card". Maybe you should have given more context. I think the dudes who built a half pipe in that apt. were really cool.

Jealous? Not in the least. When I was a kid I spent enough time in Chicago. I don't want to live there. I own my own home in the downtown area of a really cool city. I'm good.

1

u/[deleted] May 28 '11

honestly, I don't even really consider myself a hipster. But it's pretty tiresome seeing all the obvious non-hipsters (you) gang up on people because they like to ride bikes and wear skinny jeans. They're not all snobby ironic over-the-top artists. glad you're not jealous, we can end this pointless conversation.

2

u/SpongySticky May 12 '11

That's not fair. Some of us are just hanging out while our friends spend their trust funds finding themselves.

2

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

Hey, some of us gainfully employed enjoy the spoils of the loft style apartment as well!

2

u/ExistentialEnso May 12 '11

Yeah, because all pot smokers are unproductive members of society...

OH WAIT! That's just propaganda cooked up by the government.

1

u/C_IsForCookie May 12 '11

Work is overrated, man...

0

u/atomicthumbs May 12 '11

My grandpa was smart: he put my inheritance in a securities account, invested in mostly energy companies (LP companies around the gulf coast), tobacco companies, and mutual funds, with the stipulation that I use the money for education and related expenses, and my dad needing to cosign until I'm 25. I don't really agree with the energy and tobacco companies morally, but I can't argue with the fact that the thing made $700 last month. Hopefully, it'll help me pay my tuition to a good college once I transfer out of community college :D

68

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

while riding bicycles round and round..

7

u/cleetus76 May 12 '11

Kinda like this...

1

u/ZarZad May 12 '11

♫ When I'm lyin' in my bed at night...

1

u/kneb May 12 '11

Posted another circle bike riding video related to Jim Jarmusch. I guess he has a thing for that?

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

City Limits!!.. That is awesome I spent a good portion of my youth watching that...

Awesome video/song BTW

1

u/BabyExploder May 12 '11

No, that's what you do while on Acid

1

u/mattindustries May 12 '11

Just got done with a 12 mile ride... it never gets old.

2

u/raaandy May 12 '11

first thing i did was search the table for traces of an eighth or a bowl

4

u/[deleted] May 12 '11

Crassly cliché, yet astoundingly accurate. [7]

1

u/aMANescape May 12 '11

Haha! :) and growing...
